What’s resulted is some of BEST empanadas, burgers, subs and more that you’ll ever have!

Beating Cancer with Bikes and Bourbon

The Down To The Felt story is a journey into independent filmmaking and still has the post production process to go through. But it IS a testament to what can be done in Columbus, Ohio with the right talents, the right crew and yeah…a little bit of luck and serendipity. The tables were turned on this installment of Whiskey Business as our host, Dino Tripodis was the guest and the topic was a True Crime case he was instrumental in. A case of MURDER.

No, he didn’t commit it, but he was an integral part in the pursuit of the people who did.

The Just Sweats Case was an insurance fraud for murder case that started in 1988 and ended in 1992 with John Hawkins, the alleged mastermind behind the whole plot being the last one apprehended and tried and convicted for conspiracy to commit murder. His partners, Melvin Hanson and Richard Boggs were apprehended and convicted FOR the murder of Ellis Greene prior to Hawkin’s capture.

And…they almost got away with it.

Interviewed by attorney, Bill Mattes, who left no stone unturned and in turn brought out ghosts that Dino had not confronted in decades, you need to listen or watch and find out the part our host played in initiating the hunt and the subsequent lessons learned that stick with him more than 35 years later. And keep your bottle close. You’re gonna need it.

What I called “fightin’ whiskey was a single grain but there were also some single malts that were finished in tawny port casks, ALL of them great including the BUA Original which has come a long way since we sampled Batch #1 a few years back.

Great whiskey coupled with great stories from Martin and Pat made for a great podcast that went “into the wee” hours of the evening and probably could gone on even more. Enjoy this batch of podcasting with a good pour, but if I were you…I’d bring the whole bottle.

Leather and Oak Spirits founded in 2019 out of Hilliard, Ohio joined the podcast as Steve Lambert and Dave Sheppard shared their journey with not only a fine bourbon but also a nice limoncello that the boys crank out with love and care.

The bourbon was about as old school as you could get. 100% corn. The limoncello was about as old country as you could get as they eventually got the recipe from a lovely Italian woman who finally caved and allowed Steve and Dave to share it with the world.

We discussed the season, the QB situation, what happens if Coach Ryan Day loses three in a row to Michigan and would he run for office again if for some reason the Buckeyes lost with this change in his work dynamic. Insane? Yeah. It was. But fun as hell to watch or listen to. Can a Buckeye season hinge on one man? He seems to think so.

A job that was supposed to last 6 weeks for Jim when initially asked to “fix” a few things for the state, has fortunately become a permanent position and Ohio is better for it.

The visit with Jim is always informative but always fun as he also brought some whiskeys that were NOT bourbons that bourbon lovers would most likely embrace in a big way. (I could drink a water glass full of one of them. That’s how smooth and tasty one of them was.)

This week Whiskey Business went to TAT FRANKLIN and Dino got his first tattoo at 63 years of age and the whole procedure and conversation is on this podcast in real time, accompanied by a bottle of Master Distiller #1 from Jack Daniel’s (after I signed the paperwork granting permission.)

Granted, Dino’s first tattoo wasn’t too elaborate or too intricate but it was appropriate: the molecular formula for whiskey. Mat picked out a cool manual typewriter font as well and Dino collects manual typewriters, so there was a lot of serendipity going on with this procedure. The usually quiet and private Kenny opened up quite a bit with Dino, Greg and John and still kept bringing the funny as we covered family, life, how comedians source their material and if there’s such a thing as “unintentional racism” in these complicated politically correct times.

The 4 year old single barrel, barrel strength bourbon clocked in at around 119 proof with a warm, fruity nose, spicy palette, and smooth warm finish that hugs for good long bit after making its way in.

Their organization strives to put an end to “Period Poverty” making feminine hygiene products available to those women who because of their economic situation can simply not afford them. They join the show to share how their efforts have culminated into the repeal of The Pink Tax in Ohio. Oh...and they played some surprising music on the podcast that caught us all off guard. Also returning to the podcast was our friend and comedian, Jason Banks who’s been releasing funny videos to lighten our emotional load almost daily during this pandemic. Comedian Nickey Winkelman, a Shadowbox regular and one of the hosts of Quiz Box, returned to try and notch a win. She went up against Jeff Gage, one of Columbus’ best comedic improvisers and teachers of the craft. The results were a no-lose situation for the audience. Guest comic, Kenny Mock rocked the house and sat down for a one on one with host, Dino Tripodis. A Movember To Remember

November is Men’s Health Awareness Month, a month focusing on men’s prostate cancer, testicular cancer and men’s mental health issues. This week on Whiskey Business, Dino and his crew talked with a recent survivor and a current fighter. Dan Skinner, a professor at Ohio University is a survivor of testicular cancer. Russ Hubbard is currently battling Stage 4 prostate cancer. Both men had unique perspectives as to where they are and where they are going in their personal battles, both emotionally and physically speaking. As is the case, on Whiskey Business we discussed it all over a good pour of Old Scout 107 American Whiskey. While Russ wanted to partake, he could not as he had just gone through another round of chemotherapy that same afternoon. Both men were open and honest and quite frank about their battles. And yes, their was humor as it always seems to be a medicine we need no matter what the illness. It’s a special episode and one that everyone can relate to as sadly we all know someone who is fighting or maybe have lost someone in the battle.
