The Addams Family (2019)

Watch The Theron is back and ready to catch up on what we've missed! First up: 2019's animated film The Addams Family! After establishing our history with the Addams Family (across its many incarnations), we talk about whether this particular version is as good as it could be and we wonder what its goals are. We talk about how the cast would be great in a live action version, and wonder if that's why they were cast in these (voice only) roles. We wonder if Charlize was given any motivation for her character, and we talk about how hard it must be for anyone playing Morticia to not simply channel Anjelica Huston. We pitch some ideas for how the film's two main storylines could have crossed over. We talk about the animation style and character designs. We look ahead to The Addams Family 2.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)

The future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe may be a bit hazy, but what's perfectly clear is that Charlize Theron was in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness! Dropped into a credits scene, Charlize takes the role of Clea, who seems to know the titular Doctor Strange very well. Who is she? What role could she play? Why did Marvel use her now? We return to Watch The Theron for a quick episode to catch up on her role in the MCU and how she may be used down the road. We also discuss Charlize's recent history (and near future?) of acting exclusively in established franchises, how her entrance into the MCU is new ground for us, and whether Marvel would have been better served to have saved her casting for the seemingly inevitable reboot of the universe in the next few years.

The School for Good and Evil (2022)

Charlize is back! Well, she never left, but Watch The Theron is back for her newest movie: The School for Good and Evil, which is a very, very long movie. It's not made for our demographic, but Charlize is having fun (hooray!), so we try to have some fun, too. We talk about how it feels like The School for Good and Evil is a TV series condensed down to movie length, discuss the complicated adaptation backstory, and admire how good this movie looks and how good the effects are. We also wonder... Will there be sequels? Where did this movie come from? Why aren't the nepo babies of the fairy tale world more defined/dressed? We compare this movie to Snow White and the Huntsman, debate whether or not the title is a spoiler, and preview upcoming episodes of Watch The Theron -- covering both movies we've missed and Charlize's upcoming projects (which are, weirdly, all sequels). Joey explains a Netflix disc "scam." Mike stereotypes witches' names.

053 Bombshell (2019)

We’re closing out the year with a brand new Charlize Theron movie, Bombshell, and our second episode of Watch The Theron in 2019! We are joined by Cara Gael O’Regan of the Wistful Thinking Podcast to talk about all things Megyn Kelly, Gretchen Carlson, and more. In this episode, we talk about the radical physical transformation (and makeup effects) for Charlize Theron (as well as many of the film’s other actors), the adaptation of a real-life saga, and the movie’s utter determination to not stick to a story or style.

It's been a long time, but we're finally back on Watch The Theron! It may not be called Flarsky anymore (bad decision, movie studio), but Long Shot was worth the wait. In this episode, we talk about where the movie falls on the list of all-time great rom-coms, discuss the Charlize/Seth Rogen relationship, and yearn for a world where Charlize Theron is our president. We also look ahead to what's next for Charlize, and discuss how she'll fit into the ever-evolving world of the Fast and the Furious!

050 Ranking Charlize Theron's Films

We've never done this kind of episode for one of our podcasts before, and while the name is clunky, the content is A+. This episode serves as a Letterboxd countdown and overall reflection on the Watch The Theron podcast. We're officially declaring the best and the worst parts of Charlize's filmography next week for the Chrome Teeth (voting may still be open... I'm writing this from the past!), but today we're ranking Charlize Theron's films, from 45 to 1. Play along at home and let us know your order!

048 Charlize Theron Clip Show

Before we close up shop on #WatchTheTheron, we have to take a quick detour for a very special Charlize Theron Clip Show! Recorded live at Camp CageClub, Joey and Mike were joined by Chris Podcasts, Brian Rodriguez, and Joe Two to talk about 30 clips of Charlize Theron cobbled together on a YouTube playlist. How many of them do we watch in their entirety? Are any of the SNL clips funny? And will anything be as good as Brandon Flowers' music video for Crossfire? Listen and find out!

046 Tully (2018)

Tully, like Charlize Theron in the film, pulls double duty: it reunites Charlize with Jason Reitman and Diablo Cody and closes the book on the first phase of #WatchTheTheron! If you don't know anything about Tully, stop reading this and go watch it. Joining us to talk about this surprisingly unusual (and nearly entirely great) film is Jordan Polan-Clarke of the Wistful Thinking podcast! We cover Charlize's transformation for the role, Mackenzie Davis as an all-time great #WatchTheTheron character, and -- of course -- Carly Rae Jepsen.

Gringo is a weird little movie. Gringo also happens to be the first Charlize Theron movie released since #WatchTheTheron began, which is cause for a strange kind of celebration, as it marks the beginning of the end of "Phase I" of this podcast. To commemorate the occasion, we brought in special guest Nick Jenkins of the Reel Bad podcast to talk about a movie that's a bit too well made to ever find its way onto his podcast... or could it?

To talk about The Fate of the Furious, we had to bring in none other than our (other) resident Fast and Furious expert, Joe Two, as we discussed the film, whether or not Charlize is a good villain, and who her character might actually, really, truly be.

Kubo and the Two Strings is Charlize Theron's second animated film. Unlike Astro Boy, however, her role in Kubo is actually important to the story and interesting to talk about! On this episode, we welcome back "Mad" Holly Gore (last heard on the wildly divisive Waking Up in Reno episode). Holly loves Japan -- and good movies! -- so we thought that Kubo and the Two Strings would be right up her alley. Were we right?

040 The Huntsman: Winter's War (2016)

The Huntsman: Winter's War marks Charlize Theron's first sequel, and also begs one question: Why? Why this movie? Why this franchise? Though this movie was far less successful at the box office (and faced much harsher reviews from critics), it's probably not that far off from the first one in terms of quality or overall production value. However, with fewer than ten Charlize Theron movies left, it's a bit of a disappointment when we get to a movie where she misses an eighty minute chunk in the middle.

039 Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

We should have known that the journey across the wasteland of Charlize Theron's filmography wouldn't be easy, but at long last we've made it to Valhalla: Mad Max: Fury Road. (It turns out that all we needed to get through was a little guzzoline.) In this episode, we talk about why this movie should be considered one of the finest action films of all-time, as well as the film's exhilarating action scenes and its complex gender politics and dynamics.

It's 2015. Fresh off the success of Gone Girl, another Gillian Flynn adaptation, Dark Places, is released. That's where the similarities end. After David Fincher's adaptation of Gone Girl grossed more than $360 million worldwide in theaters, Dark Places was relegated straight to VOD and was met by "generally unfavorable reviews."

A Million Ways to Die in the West brings us back to a bygone era of Charlize Theron movies, and not in a good way. Like both Woody Allen movies we've covered on this podcast, A Million Ways to Die in the West seems like an ego-boosting fest for Seth MacFarlane.

036 Snow White and the Huntsman (2012)

Most of Snow White and the Huntsman is forgettable, but that doesn't make any of Charlize Theron's gleefully campy acting any less wonderful. Snow White and the Huntsman tries to re-tell the classic tale of Snow White in new ways. Does it do an effective job? Do we really need the apple and dwarfs when nothing else feels the same? Should it be way weirder than it actually is? Does anyone think Kristen Stewart is actually "fairer" than Charlize Theron?

035 Prometheus (2012)

In Prometheus, Charlize Theron plays a character who may be hiding some very big secrets -- namely, is she a human or a robot? -- but does finding out the answers to those secrets really matter? Rather than seek answers, we brought back our religion expert, John Brooks, to talk about the subtle (and not-so-subtle) religious undertones (and overtones) in this film. Even though this movie is filled to the brim with absolute dumb-dumbs, there's more than enough here to make this one of the more interesting (and one of the ten or fifteen best) Charlize Theron movies to date.

034 Young Adult (2011)

Young Adult feels like the absolute culmination of every part Charlize Theron has played to date, showcasing her wide array of talents and highlighting a few of the different types of roles she's been known for over the years. She's a twisted version of a manic pixie dream girl, the anti-mom, a comedic force to be reckoned with, and an absolutely devastating character study of a broken woman. Pairing her on-screen with a never-better Patton Oswalt, and there's something magic about Young Adult.

We're joined by Wistful Thinking's Cara Gael O'Regan, our post-apocalyptic expert, to discuss the movie, Charlize's role within it, and whether or not the types of character she's been playing are better than those played by the rest of the women in Hollywood, or if they're just as bad.

Join Joey, Mike, and special guest Jeremy Kelly as they play with fire in New Mexico!

030 Hancock (2008)

Hancock is a movie of frustrating potential. Will Smith gives a dynamic performance as the lead, but it feels like studio interference made Charlize Theron's character more prominent than she should have been... and that's a bummer! A movie written by the mastermind behind Breaking Bad shouldn't be anywhere close to this level of chaotic, but here we are. At least we get our second team-up of Charlize and Will Smith, and our second of Charlize and Jason Bateman!

029 Sleepwalking (2008)

Sleepwalking is such a vague and aimless film that not even its Wikipedia page notes where the movie takes place. Do the filmmaker and screenwriter even know? Who can say! All we know for sure is it was directed by a man who's primarily a visual artist and written by a man who's primarily a film colorist... oh, and Charlize is barely in it.

The Watch The Theron and #MagicMics podcasts crossed over to cover this (disappointing) movie, directed by Charlize's long-time boyfriend (and Mike's mortal enemy) Stuart Townsend, in his directorial debut.

You may not know how to pronounce In the Valley of Elah -- or even know what it's about -- but it's definitely a movie you should see. In the Valley of Elah marks one of Charlize Theron's all-time best performances (so far, at least) and doubles as one of her best films yet.

In the history of the CageClub Podcast Network, we've never tackled a show quite like Arrested Development, or Charlize's specific arc within it. Spanning five episodes in the show's third season, the For British Eyes Only/Mr. F storyline is a fan favorite that also doubles as not-even-close-to-politically-correct. Rita corny, Michael.

025 Aeon Flux (2005)

How much you enjoy Aeon Flux depends on the type of movie you think you're about to watch. If you want to see a movie where Charlize Theron kicks a lot of ass (and looks good doing it), you're in luck! If you're looking for something cohesive and coherent and well-rounded, well... you might want to keep looking. Like other ambitious sci-fi from this century, one of us (Mike) found it right up his alley, even if it didn't quite live up to his expectations. Joey, on the other hand... well, he might want to keep waiting for something else.

024 North Country (2005)

Like Monster just a few short movies ago, North Country represents another prestige Charlize Theron drama that earned her an Academy Award nomination. While she's undeniably great in the movie (along with a slew of other actors all at or near the top of their game), recommending the movie is a tough ask due to the subject matter and the fact that the movie feels less than the sum of its parts. If you're able to stomach the oppressive levels of sexism in this period drama that marked a seismic shift in eliminating sexual harassment in the workplace, you'll see another role for Charlize that's a true culmination of everything she's done to this point, as well as a look forward to her future. Just don't say we didn't warn you: this one's a tough watch.

023 The Life and Death of Peter Sellers (2004)

Today's film was a made-for-TV movie that attempts to tackle, appropriately, The Life and Death of Peter Sellers. But, as it turns out, the life and death of Peter Sellers was filled with events in which he was an unlikable mess, and the movie was so forgettable that it's hard to recall whether or not we even see him die. At the very least, we have a terrific Stanley Tucci as Stanley Kubrick appearance.

In the history of the CageClub Podcast Network (and the nearly 500 episodes we've released so far), rarely have opinions been as split about a movie as they are here.
018 Trapped (2002)

Do you see that picture associated with this episode on cageclub.me? That one of Charlize standing in front of a window with BAD IDEA written on it? It's almost as though team that made this movie were offering a hint: watching Trapped is a bad idea! We are spiraling down, down, down on Watch The Theron as we make our way through generic thriller after generic thriller, with one wasted Charlize Theron performance after another. That didn't stop Joey and Mike from talking about lots of things, like the world's worst actor, one of the most baffling third act finales in recent memory, and why Dakota Fanning keeps finding herself on the wrong side of kidnappings.

017 The Curse of the Jade Scorpion (2001)

It's been nearly 10 episodes since we last had to stomach an atrocious Woody Allen movie, so why not double down on some of his worst work ever? Not only does The Curse of the Jade Scorpion star Woody Allen himself (in a role he wishes he never took), but it's sexist, frustrating, and aggravating. Worst of all, it takes what would otherwise be a terrific role for Charlize Theron and wastes it in an otherwise dreadful movie. There's good news, though! We have no more Woody Allen movies to cover on this podcast. Hooray!

016 15 Minutes (2001)

If we had done literally any research before plotting out our course for Watch The Theron, there's a really strong chance we would have skipped 15 Minutes. Charlize Theron appears in just one scene (as a thank you to director John Herzfeld, who gave Charlize her breakout role in 2 Days in the Valley), and while that scene isn't bad, the rest of the movie sure isn't great. As it turns out, Herzfeld seems to make the same movie over and over again, yet is never able to figure out what tone he wants to use. Are there any redeeming qualities of this movie? Listen and find out!

015 Sweet November (2001)

We've covered Sweet November before, and we've seen another Keanu/Charlize pairing from her perspective. What will change when we talk about their chemistry for a FOURTH time? It turns out we're all a combination of depressed, frustrated, and confused by how little sense literally every part of this movie makes. Is Keanu Reeves a sociopath? Is Charlize Theron a sociopath? Are they BOTH sociopaths? Why isn't any other character nearly as interesting or as fully realized as Chaz/Cherry? All of these questions -- with very few satisfying answers -- on this episode of Watch The Theron!

014 The Legend of Bagger Vance (2000)

The Legend of Bagger Vance may be (yet another) #problematic example of the "magical negro" trope, but that's far from this film's only fault. Overlong with a clumsy story, The Legend of Bagger Vance's biggest drawback may be not enough Charlize Theron! In this episode, we talk about the squandered use of her character, and how she goes from being a strong character with potential to an object as soon as Matt Damon gets his act together. That's Classic Hollywood for you, and we're getting sick of it. This episode also features many references to Shia LaBeouf and #ALLHISMOVIES, for reasons both obvious... and not!

013 Men of Honor (2000)

If this were a Cuba Gooding, Jr. podcast, Men of Honor might be an all-time great. As it stands, we're facing down yet another movie with minimal Charlize Theron action, yet she still makes every moment on-screen count. She drunkenly stumbles through her scenes in Men of Honor, just as she drunkenly stumbles through the decades this movie covers, as she attempts to tolerate her racist-in-recovery husband (thirty years her senior?), Robert De Niro. May we all be blessed with the patience, tolerance, and liver recovery of Charlize Theron in this movie.

012 The Yards (2000)

Is The Yards a near masterpiece or merely an above-average period piece lacking a sense of time and place and starring a mumbly Marky Mark? There's a real division on this episode as we head into Queens to talk about the shady backdoor deals of, I don't know, trainyard stuff? While The Yards could give Charlize Theron more to do, its meticulous pace and Godfather-esque feel elevate it far above most of the dreck we've covered so far on Watch The Theron. How much you love it is to be determined, but with great performances and a strong story, it's definitely one to watch! An important note: For some reason, Joey's audio got really wonky with this one. The first half is good, but the second half becomes a strange experiment in omniscient podcasting. You'll see what we mean. Enjoy!

Ho, ho, ho... it's time to talk Reindeer Games: a movie we were once going to cover for our Ben Affleck podcast that also happened to fall into Watch The Theron. No matter which actor we're focusing on, one thing is for certain: this is not a good movie. Charlize Theron is on the record, having said it's her least favorite movie she's made. While we've seen her in worse movies to date, it's hard to argue with her. We chat about the strained logic of this film (most of this podcast is us trying to figure out what the plot actually is), the strange character choices, and how lucky we were to dodge the bullet of doing a Ben Affleck podcast. We also unveil a brand new game... let us know what you think about it! Lastly, is there a similarity here between this movie and Con Air? Perhaps!

010 The Cider House Rules (1999)

Is The Cider House Rules a good movie? That's the key question up for debate in this episode of Watch The Theron. What's inarguable is that it's the most award-decorated film we've covered so far. What's very arguable is whether or not it's a good movie, and whether or not Charlize Theron is good in it. We also talk about how this is a Spider-Friends pre-union, the Adam Scott-esque turn of Paul Rudd from a serious actor to a comedic actor, and an abundance of rappers-turned-actors (heretofore known as raptors) who all hang out and make cider. Also: could this be the last edition of Hollywood Tycoon for a while? All of that -- and much more -- on this episode of Watch The Theron!

009 The Astronaut's Wife (1999)

Stop me if you feel like you've seen this one before. The Astronaut's Wife squanders a creepy vibe and a strong performance from Charlize in an otherwise muddled, uninspired package. At least we get our first dance scene! That's gotta count for something, right? Too bad that doesn't make up for the series of head-scratching moments and directorial choices throughout the rest of this movie.

008 Mighty Joe Young (1998)

Mighty Joe Young is a return to the Disney machine for the #CageClub Podcast Network, and a first stop for Watch the Theron. This movie is remarkable in that it may be the best love story we've seen in a Charlize Theron movie so far, and (to no one's surprise) this relationship does not include Bill Paxton. This movie also features a delightful cameo from a Disney team player, as well as some truly terrible technology: "JOE TROUBLE!!!" We also have a revelation in the Hollywood Tycoon game that's SO SHOCKING that it may cause us to end the segment once and for all. (Just kidding.)

It's a #CageClub Podcast Network crossover! We'd previously covered The Devil's Advocate for #KeanuClub, but now we're back to talk about Charlize Theron's role in it! Watching this movie from the perspective of Mary Ann Lomax highlights how she's living a horror film no one else is, as well as a life of isolation, loneliness, and despair. Not nearly as fun as watching from Keanu's point of view, but hey! That's Hollywood, I guess.

003 That Thing You Do! (1996)

The #HANX Cut of That Thing You Do! features a whole lot more Charlize Theron, which is right up our alley. Clocking in at nearly two-and-a-half hours, this version more clearly shows the disintegration of her relationship with Guy, and her growing fondness for her dentist. But a question: is that dentist really so handsome that she doesn't realize how catchy the title song is? Also, another question: did we uncover a weird tooth fetish growing inside the mind (or mouth) of director Tom Hanks? Lastly, brace yourself for an extended tangent/analogy about how the cash grab nature of the Buffy, the Vampire Slayer DVDs relates to this movie!
