]]> 1453 WEMBY GETS SPUR'D The day has come and gone and we now know that Victor Wembenyama will most likely be drafted by the San Antonio Spurs, and then the journey starts.  What I have been thinking a lot as of late, is the media’s role in myth building, in creating a narrative to feed the 24 Hour Sports News cycle with soundbyte after soundbyte, and different nuanced takes on the same topic, so Stephen A Smith can talk about Lebron James four hundred times throughout the course of one week of shows. There is no one better at myth building than ESPN personality Brian Windhurst.  A former beat writer for the Cleveland Caviliers, it appeared for many years that Brian Windhurst was the Lebron whisperer, breaking stories out of Cleveland, as Lebron James became a mega superstar. Windhurst a very talented journalist and savvy operator for lack of a better term rode the coattails of Lebron into an NBA Insider and media superstar, where his knowledge and expertise is pursued across the league, and defintely on ESPN. This past week in following the Wemby news, I wasn’t surprised to see a very long think piece written by Windhurst on Wemby, the byline was from Paris France, where Windhurst had traveled to for 24 hours to get a byte from Wemby after the draft lottery. Those words this year and the run that UCONN had inside the tournament, took on extra meaning for me this time of year. While I have faithfully watched the NCCA Tournamant since I was eight years old, the Monday night of the Championship game has been my only religion, I have yet to miss that game, no matter where I have been. With UCONN’s run thru the tournament, and their televisied games, what they also provided for me was a topic of conversation with my Mother who is battling Alzheimers’s and attened UCONN, wherein she met my father, and they have been married since.  While the disease ravages her short term memory, the UCONN’s Men’s basketball games, have turned into a conversation piece that injects some positive emotions, in my daily interactions which at times are painful, sad, introspective, and relevatory. While my Mom’s battle of Alzheimers, has been front and center, another story resonated with me, and that was the public narrative around the Uconn coach Danny Hurley, and his early struggles with mental health, and overcoming walking away for a period of time of the game of basketball altogether. ]]> 724 no JESUS SHUTTLESWORTH With the news, or let’s call  it the anointing of Victor Wembanyama as the next Jesus Shuttlesworth,  I needed to go in search of some more information, my fascination of this topic came from a few places mainly The Ringer and ESPN,  and Bill Simmons, who I have grown to listen to quite a lot, but obviously there are many things I don’t know about Wemby, and we need a baseline to start from, the kid is only 18 years old, so I am not looking for any scandal here, but in the social media generation I was curious as to what exists already prior to this coming out party. Wembanyama was born in Le Chesnay France , his father was a long jumper, and his mother played women’s basketball , growing up it was his mother who served as his basketball coach.   At ten years old he joined the youth system in France which is called Nanterre92, his parents at that time refused offers from other European clubs like FC Barcelona in Spain, and a club called ASVEL. Again guys, this kid is only 18, so anyone looking for high school scandals or an Allen Iverson and his infamous bowling alley brawl type stuff, I haven’t found anything yet, and I have a feeling that would already be circulating with how much this guy was covered in the last two weeks: Learn more about your ad choices.
