That was just one of the times Jerry West’s seven-decade life in the NBA intersected with the Trail Blazers. The man who built both the Showtime and Shaq-Kobe Lakers could reasonably be seen as one of the greatest obstacles to the Blazers ever winning a second championship.

Oregonian Sports: Lake Oswego’s Mia Brahe-Pedersen has her sights set on records, and maybe even a spot in the Olympics in her senior track season

Coming into her senior season, Lake Oswego’s Mia Brahe-Pedersen already has the things many of her Oregon high school peers are seeking.

She’s already a 12-time state champion (three each in the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash, 4x100-meter relay and 4x400-meter relay), a two-time Oregon Gatorade Player of the Year, an 11-time national champion and a 22-time All-American.

She holds the Oregon high school record in the 100 (11.00 seconds), 200 (22.43), 4x400-meter relay (3:48.49) and the 4x200-meter relay (1:39.86), she’s signed a name, image and likeness deal with Nike and she’s already committed to run for USC.

But Brahe-Pedersen doesn’t have everything she came for.

“Overall, my goals are pretty simple,” she said. “Break as many records as possible and make as much history as possible.”

When the Eugene Emeralds announced that they would play as the Exploding Whales for a few games this season, general manager Allan Benavides was unsure how people would react to the club’s nod to the famous 1970 incident on an Oregon beach.

The club had ordered merchandise with the new, alternate logo. Enough shirts, jerseys and hats, Benavides thought, to last through Christmas.

It sold out in 90 seconds.

Benavides, who has worked in minor league baseball for two decades, joined Sports by Northwest this week to discuss the Exploding Whales debut this weekend and also the future of professional baseball in Eugene.

When Damian Lillard was a lightly recruited junior point guard in Oakland, Randy Rahe was a mid-major college coach trying to fill out his roster. Even after larger schools became aware of the future NBA superstar, Lillard remained loyal to the first coach to recruit him and went on to become a two-time Big Sky Conference player of the year at Weber State in Ogden, Utah.

This weekend, Lillard will return to Utah for the NBA’s All-Star weekend in Salt Lake City, just 35 miles south of Ogden.

Rahe, who retired last season as the winningest coach in Big Sky Conference history, joined Bill Oram and Andrew Theen on this week’s episode of Sports by Northwest to discuss the unique relationship Lillard maintains with the state of Utah and especially fans in Ogden and what he expects to see from his former star in what amounts to a homecoming game.

Mychal Thompson on the Schonz, the Blazers and Klay's childhood in Oregon | Bill Oram

Bill Schonely was already a legend in Portland by the time the Trail Blazers selected Mychal Thompson with the first overall pick in 1978.

Over the next 40-plus years, Thompson forged a friendship with the legendary radio play-by-play announcer, including a stretch when they were both part of the Blazers broadcast crew in the ‘90s.

Thompson, now a radio color analyst for Lakers games, calls The Schonz Portland’s answer to Chick Hearn and Vin Scully. He joined the Sports by Northwest this week to share his fondest memories of the man he calls the greatest Trail Blazer and to tell stories about his own playing career and fatherhood.

Trail Blazers president Dewayne Hankins discusses big vision for Moda Center, Rose Quarter

As the president of business for the Trail Blazers and the Rose Quarter, Dewayne Hankins has his hands in a lot of different projects. Beyond the recent Phil Knight basketball tournaments and the Blazers new PDX Carpet uniforms, he is helping to orchestrate a long-term vision for Portland as a city that can, and will, host major events. That includes an NBA All-Star Game by 2030 — the same year that the city is slated to host the NCAA Women’ Final Four.

What will the Rose Quarter look like by then? And Moda Center, which is already more than a quarter century old?

Hankins get into all of that and much more on this week’s episode of Sports by Northwest.

The Athletic's Ari Wasserman on how Oregon's dominance may be bad for the Pac-12

Ari Wasserman is a national college football reporter for The Athletic. Like many, he believes the Oregon Ducks are the best team in the Pac-12. He also thinks that they are the conference’s worst candidate to break into the college football playoff. Why? Well, here’s a hint: Georgia.

The Ducks are in the CFP hunt with a surprise Heisman contender, the Beavers are back in the top 25 and the Blazers are exciting and (maybe?) good. Oh, and the Thorns just secured their third NWSL championship. If existential dread is the underpinning of a sports fan’s existence, Oregonians don’t know what to do with themselves right now.

Everything is going — knock on wood — well. Weird, right?

That’s the theme of this week’s episode of Sports by Northwest, with sports editor Joel Odom joining host Bill Oram to discuss the overwhelming positivity across the local sports landscape.

It’s a big week for the Portland Trail Blazers, who won their season opener on Wednesday night.

It’s a big week for the 10th-ranked Oregon Ducks, who host No. 9 UCLA and former coach Chip Kelly on Saturday.

Aaron Fentress knows plenty about both. The Oregonian’s Blazers beat writer covered the Ducks for more than a dozen years, and was up close for Kelly’s tenure in Eugene. He joined Sports By Northwest to talk about both.

Mariners beat writer Ryan Divish on Seattle’s postseason breakthrough

In 15 seasons covering the Mariners for the Seattle Times, Ryan Divish has covered seven different managers, three general managers and exactly zero playoff games. Until this season.

Divish, a Montana native, is usually back in his hometown of Havre by this time of year. Except a magical run by the Mariners has the Northwest’s lone Major League club back in the postseason for the first time since 2001.

Prior to Game 2 in Houston, Divish joined this week’s episode of Sports By Northwest to discuss the Mariners breakthrough and his career covering a losing franchise.

The Jackie Stiles Story: The basketball legend talks Portland, the WNBA and her legacy

There are some names in the sports world that deserve to be said, and remembered, forever. Jackie Stiles fits that description.

On the latest episode of Sports by Northwest, columnist Bill Oram and sports editor Joel Odom chat with the women's basketball hall of famer about her life and her career.

Stiles is the subject of a new documentary called "The Jackie Stiles Story." The documentary is streaming online but it will be shown live at the Portland Film festival starting next week.

Her story, in its totality, is incredible.

Stiles was an NCAA legend who held the all-time scoring record for years. She was a cult figure (think Steph Curry meetings Pistol Pete) who drew massive crowds to her games in small town Kansas and then at Southwest Missouri State in college. She went on to a brief career with the now-defunct Portland Fire of the WNBA before a series of devastating injuries ended her career far too soon.

Brooke Olzendam on Trail Blazers training camp, her optimism for the season

OSU legend Ken Simonton on USC memories, Jonathan Smith, Pac-12 realignment

In 2000, Oregon State welcomed USC into Corvallis and upset the Trojans 31-21 behind 234 yards rushing from star tailback Ken Simonton. More than two decades later, Simonton is a federal investigator for the Department of Labor and a youth track coach in his hometown, but he will be closely watching the Beavers game against the seventh-ranked Trojans on Saturday.

This week on Sports by Northwest, the Beavers legend joined columnist Bill Oram to discuss this weekend’s game and to reflect on his career in Corvallis. His 5,044 career rushing yards remain a school record.
