From $16.19 to F1: The Chandelier Girl Who Lit Up Las Vegas

On this electrifying edition of Small Business is Big Business with Mark Madrid, meet Louisa Mendoza, the unstoppable entrepreneur who rebuilt her life with just $16.19, a six-year-old son, and relentless determination.

After leaving an abusive relationship, Louisa knocked on construction barricades at the Meadows Mall in 1999, cleaning overnight to earn enough to survive. With limited English but unlimited courage, she launched “Keep It Clean”—a janitorial business that would eventually land her inside the Bellagio, cleaning chandeliers in some of the most iconic spaces in Las Vegas.

She didn’t know how to clean chandeliers.
She just knew how to say yes to opportunity.

Now known as the “Chandelier Lady,” Louisa has expanded into immigration services, supporting international partners for global events like Formula 1, and is stepping into a new chapter of public service with the federal government.

This episode is about resilience.
It’s about action over excuses.
It’s about turning pain into power.

And it’s proof that small business isn’t small—it’s transformational.

Small Business is Big Business: Champ on a Stamp - Peter Villegas on Achievement in Business, Sports and Life

Villegas is the co-chair of ACT and the chairman of the California State Athletic Commission. Previously, he served as the head of Latin Affairs at Coca-Cola. The host expresses gratitude to Villegas for sponsoring the Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce's signature event during a challenging time around 2014.Peter Villegas's Current Work and Philosophy:

ACT: Villegas is a co-chair of this international strategic consulting firm. His clients and issues are diverse, ranging from water and education to transportation and food and beverage. The firm's management partners include former elected officials like Fabian Núñez, the former speaker of the California House, and Senators Boxer and Butler.

California State Athletic Commission (CSAC): Villegas is the first Latino to chair the CSAC. The commission is noted for having a pension for boxers and a retirement fund for MMA fighters. Villegas's current focus with the CSAC is on getting more events, which he views as significant economic drivers for local communities by generating spending at hotels, restaurants, and shops. He wants sports to be siloed under the GDP (Gross Domestic Product) to better reflect its economic importance.

Personal Background: Villegas is the youngest of seven boys. His work ethic comes from his hardworking immigrant father from Sonora, Mexico, and his mother from Coachella Valley.

Career Navigation: Villegas did not attend college or earn a degree, which he said required him to "out-hustle" everyone else because he lacked the safety net of a degree. He started his career as a bank teller. He learned to apply a "sports mentality" to corporate America, drawing inspiration from how teams can come back to win even when down and the need to "get up" after being knocked down, citing his love for Muhammad Ali.

Advice to Small Businesses: Villegas advises small business owners to "embrace the struggle" and learn from it. He emphasizes the need to be better educated on public policy, laws, and policies that impact their industry, such as health codes or employee regulations. He likens being unprepared for policy changes to a boxer getting knocked out by the punch they do not see coming.

The Muhammad Ali Commemorative Stamp: Villegas initiated the campaign to create an official U.S. commemorative stamp for Muhammad Ali. This idea arose when Lonnie Ali, Muhammad Ali's wife, visited his home.

She noticed that Villegas had poster stamps of Roberto Clemente and Cesar Chavez but no Muhammad Ali stamp. After he asked if he could make it happen, she agreed, and the "Champ Stamp Campaign" began. The process took three years. The stamp was unveiled on January 15th of the current year (2018) in Louisville. Only 22 million stamps will be made.

Small Business is Big Business with Mark L. Madrid - Episode 04: Storytelling, Mentorship, and Building Community with Lorenzo Gomez III

Welcome to Self Fueling Excellence, a show now streaming on Roku and Amazon Fire, where we spotlight stories of resilience and innovation. Today’s guest is Lorenzo Gomez III—a San Antonio native whose journey took him from the city’s west side to leading tech companies like Rackspace, co-founding Geekdom, and becoming an acclaimed author.

Lorenzo grew up in a large family in inner-city San Antonio. Early experiences—like navigating gang violence at school—inspired his mental health book Tafoya Toro: Three Years of Fear. He credits mentors for shaping his path; friends encouraged him into technology jobs that led to pivotal roles at Gateway Computers and eventually Rackspace. There, he found not only career growth but also transformative relationships that championed his potential.

At Geekdom—the city’s first coworking space—Lorenzo fostered community by connecting innovators and entrepreneurs. Drawing inspiration from leaders like Graham Weston, he learned the value of seeking advice rather than pretending to have all the answers—a lesson that shaped both his leadership style and storytelling approach.

Storytelling became central to Lorenzo’s philosophy: “Everyone has a story worth telling,” he says. His four-part formula (simple idea—from/to—story) helps others craft narratives that move audiences emotionally as well as intellectually.

His latest book addresses online trolling, offering practical strategies rooted in personal experience for overcoming negativity on social media—a modern challenge affecting many today.

Now focused on Voice of San Antonio—a platform amplifying local voices—and writing new books about his beloved hometown, Lorenzo remains committed to helping others find their potential through mentorship, community-building, faith-driven purpose…and always storytelling.
