Bryan Hughes (R) is a State Senator for Texas District 1 (eastern portion of Texas, bordering Arkansas, Oklahoma and Louisiana). He authored the Texas Heartbeat Law (Texas Senate Bill 8), which makes abortion illegal from the moment an embryo's heartbeat can be detected.

The Supreme Court ruled recently that abortion providers in Texas can sue over the state’s ban on abortions, but it left the law in place (the court was not asked to rule on the law's constitutionality in this case).
