The Anti Xeelee and The Last Entity

The universe is vast, more vast than the human mind can conceive. And it is also old, impossibly old. The human race has existed for roughly 100,000 years, a blip when compared to the long history of the cosmos. In all that time billions upon billions of years, what other life came into existence? Sure the first intelligent race didn’t just form 100,000 years ago, can’t possibly be the first. If so, who was, and heights did their civilization rise to and where are they now?

The Xeelee Sequence by Stephen Baxter is a collection of science fiction books and short stories that follow the history of the cosmos dominated by an elusive race of beings known as the Xeelee. They are an ancient race so advanced that mere scraps of their technology left behind discarded by them could change the trajectory of an entire species. Unbeknownst to humanity, who only saw the Xeelee as a threat and a competitor, the Xeelee had a great mission. Humanity waged a war with the Xeelee that lasted a hundred thousand years but in reality humankind would prove to be no match for the great Xeelee, in reality the Xeelee fought a much greater war. A war for the fate of the universe against entities made of dark matter. These entities form at the beginning of the universe, they lived within stars and consumed them, if these entities won against the Xeelee, the fate of the universe would be darkness.

But the Xeelee had a plan, a plan spanning across time, forward and backwards. The AntiXeele was a constructed entity, a being created with the purpose of orchestrating the Xeelee’s great works and seeing it through. The Anti Xeelee was a vast and powerful mind.

We’ve covered the Xeelee Sequence multiple times on this channel. In short, The Xeelee Sequence is a series of science fiction novels and short stories by Stephen Baxter that deal with humanity as they exist in a universe dominated by the powerful and enigmatic race of Aliens known as the Xeelee. The Xeelee were more akin to gods than lifeforms.

When humankind first entered into cosmic society, we were oppressed and enslaved by multiple alien races before we found our footing. The aquatic Squeem, the amorphous Qax. We overcame them, I go in depth into this in my Timelike Infinity video and also in my Ultimate Timeline of the Xeelee Sequence video. Over many thousand of years humankind grew to dominate the milkyway, none stood stronger than us aside from the Xeelee.

When that time came, humankind was contained, our colonies throughout the milky way removed, men had no knowledge of the war that had been raging for billions of years. The Photino Birds were beings of Dark Matter, they were born at the beginning of the universe and since the beginning they have raged against the Xeelee for the soul of the cosmos. The Photino birds were creatures that existed in a sector of reality we could barely perceive. While ordinary matter formed stars, planets, and life, dark matter formed something else entirely. Vast structures. Vast ecologies. And within that hidden universe, the Photino Birds were dominant.

Their war with the Xeelee was not fought with fleets or soldiers. It was fought with the fundamental laws of physics.

Arthur C. Clarke is one of the greatest science fiction authors of all time. That fact is not debatable. His work is enormously famous and influential, most people have heard of stories like 2001: A Space Odyssey, Childhood’s End, or Rendezvous with Rama. But Clarke wrote far more than just a few legendary titles. Across decades, he produced dozens of novels, short stories, and essays, and helped define what science fiction could be at its best: vast in scale, scientifically grounded, filled with awe.

Arthur C. Clarke’s The Star is a good example of a writer taking one idea and pushing it as far as it can go. It’s a very short story, but the impact is significant. A while ago I covered Arthur C Clarke’s short story “The 9 Billion Names of God” . It dealt with a cosmic horror concept related to the effect that naming god would have on reality. Arthur C Clarke often wrote about humanity confronting something far larger than itself, whether that was the universe, or truths that shatter the way we understand our place in existence. The Star works in a similar way. Using the idea of a discovery out in deep space, he explores something spiritual, and devastating.
