<title>Dr. Peter Coleman Helped Thousands Beat Addiction, Here's What He Learned</title>
<description>What if everything you thought you knew about addiction was incomplete?

This week on Primary Purpose with Pej, Pej sits down with addiction medicine pioneer Dr. Peter Coleman, whose work has helped transform the way people approach recovery from alcohol and opioid dependence. With more than three decades of experience and thousands of lives impacted, Dr. Coleman shares the lessons he's learned from treating addiction, supporting families through recovery, and challenging long-held beliefs about what healing really looks like.

Together, they explore the realities of the opioid epidemic, why so many people struggle to access effective treatment, the science behind addiction, and the importance of compassion in recovery. Dr. Coleman also reflects on founding one of the nation's first outpatient detox programs and building a treatment model that restored dignity, hope, and possibility to those seeking freedom from substance use disorders. This powerful conversation is a reminder that recovery is not only possible, it happens every day.

<title>17 Felonies, 9 Years in Prison… Then She Changed Everything | Ginny Burton on Redemption</title>
<description>What happens when someone society gave up on refuses to give up on themselves?

This week on Primary Purpose with Pej, Pej sits down with Ginny Burton — speaker, reform advocate, and living proof that redemption is real.

After 30 years in addiction, 17 felony convictions, and nearly a decade spent in prison, Ginny lost everything: her freedom, family, identity, and hope. But her story didn’t end there.

Now over 13 years sober, Ginny has transformed her life into a mission — going from incarcerated woman to scholar, policy advisor, and founder of the OUT Impact Coalition. Today, she’s helping reshape recovery, reentry, and criminal justice reform from the inside out.

In this powerful conversation, Pej and Ginny discuss:

Addiction and survival
Prison and systemic failure
Motherhood, shame, and forgiveness
Recovery and rebuilding identity
Turning pain into purpose
Why no one is beyond redemption

This is a story of transformation, resilience, and what can happen when someone is finally given a second chance.

<title>How Structure, Community, and Mentorship Changed My Life</title>
<description>In this episode, Pej is joined by therapist Dima Puchkarare for an honest conversation that blends both professional insight and lived experience in the addiction and recovery space.

Together, they share what early sobriety really looks like—from navigating intense emotions and struggling with consistency to the challenge of letting go of familiar environments and habits. Drawing from their work with individuals facing substance use and mental health challenges, as well as their own recovery journeys, they speak openly about the parts of recovery that often go unspoken.

Dima offers perspective from his experience as a therapist in Los Angeles, supporting clients through life after treatment, while also reflecting on his own path—learning to build stability through structure, community, mentorship, and a willingness to do things differently.

Pej adds his own personal and professional lens, breaking down what helped him move from uncertainty to a more grounded, meaningful life.

Whether you’re new to recovery, supporting someone who is, or simply looking for a deeper understanding of what lasting change takes, this episode provides practical insight and a grounded, real-world perspective.

<title>We Have To Stop Playing God...Both The Enabler &amp; The Addicted</title>
<description>In this solo episode of Primary Purpose, Pej dives into one of the most dangerous mindsets in recovery: the belief that we’re in control of everything. “Playing God” doesn’t always look obvious, it shows up as overthinking, forcing outcomes, trying to fix people, or refusing to surrender when things don’t go our way. Pej breaks down how this illusion of control quietly fuels relapse, disconnect, and emotional burnout, even when we think we’re doing everything “right.”

If you’ve ever struggled with letting go, trusting the process, or accepting what you can’t change, this episode is for you. Pej shares real talk on what surrender actually looks like in daily recovery, how to recognize when your ego is taking over, and practical ways to step out of self-will and back into alignment. This is a powerful reminder that freedom in sobriety doesn’t come from control, it comes from letting go.

<title>The Truth About Addiction and Family Recovery</title>
<description>Today on Primary Purpose with Pej, we sit down with Carlton Norwood, a recovery advocate whose life story is defined by resilience, responsibility, and a deep calling to help families find their way back from chaos.

Carlton’s journey includes years of substance use and self-destructive behavior that placed his life — and his relationships — at serious risk. After reaching a moment of undeniable clarity, he committed to making a drastic and meaningful change that would rebuild his life and reshape his purpose.

For nearly 30 years as a Financial Advisor, Carlton guided hundreds of families through uncertainty and hardship, helping them find clarity in moments that required calm leadership and sound judgment. Combined with raising four successful children, that experience reinforced his belief that families can recover when structure, boundaries, and accountability are put in place.

An Augusta, Georgia native, Carlton is deeply rooted in family and community. Today he dedicates his work to helping families create environments where recovery is possible and loved ones can finally access the help they need.

This conversation explores addiction, recovery, family intervention, and how small intentional steps can restore lives and relationships.

If you or someone you know is struggling with addiction, this episode offers perspective, hope, and practical insight into the path toward recovery.

<title>Cutting Through the Chaos: How to Move from Paralysis to Clarity with Matt Brown</title>
<description>In this episode of Primary Purpose with Pej, we are joined by Matt Brown, a professional interventionist who has spent over 20 years guiding families through the storm of addiction.

Matt’s expertise isn't just academic—it’s lived. In 2001, his own family staged an intervention that saved his life. Since entering recovery in 2003, he has dedicated his career to paying that gift forward, helping hundreds of families move out of the "paralysis of fear" and into structured, meaningful action.

In this conversation, Pej and Matt dive into:

The "Full Circle" Perspective: What it’s like to sit on both sides of the intervention table.

Debunking the "Rock Bottom" Myth: Why waiting for things to get worse is a dangerous strategy—and how to act early.

The Balance of Compassion and Firmness: How to cut through a loved one’s denial without stripping them of their dignity.

Restoring the Family: Moving away from enabling and toward healthy boundaries that foster long-term recovery.

Whether you are a family member feeling stuck in the cycle of chaos or someone looking to understand the mechanics of a successful intervention, Matt’s direct and steady approach offers a roadmap from uncertainty to clarity.

<title>The Truth About Interventions, Boundaries, and Family Recovery | Scott Stein</title>
<description>On this episode of Primary Purpose with Pej, we sit down with Scott Stein — family coach, interventionist, and founder of Capital Companion and Transport — for one of the most honest conversations about addiction, family dynamics, and recovery you’ll hear.

Scott doesn’t teach recovery from theory — he lived it. His addiction spanned opioids, alcohol, weed, benzos, nightlife culture, and the “work hard, party harder” mentality that eventually left him homeless, evicted, and disconnected from reality. While everyone around him saw the problem, Scott couldn’t — until his mother’s growth became the mirror he couldn’t ignore.

Today, Scott works with families and individuals navigating addiction at every stage:
• Before treatment
• During treatment
• After treatment and re-entry into real life

His focus goes beyond sobriety — into executive functioning, boundaries, routines, life skills, accountability, and structure — the areas most people overlook but families desperately need help with.

Scott believes:

You don’t steal someone’s comeback story — you support it

You set boundaries, not band-aids

You offer truth, not rescue

Whether someone lives on Park Avenue or the streets, Scott shows up the same way: direct, practical, and rooted in real love.

<title>I Manifested My Worst Nightmare — Until Faith Set Me Free with Marco Ferrante</title>
<description>In this powerful episode of Primary Purpose with Pej, Pej sits down with Marco Ferrante — pastor, mentor, nonprofit leader, and founder of Journey to Solutions — to share a raw and deeply moving story of addiction, identity, and spiritual transformation.

Raised in a traditional Sicilian family where reputation meant everything, Marco learned early that admitting addiction was considered weakness. What followed was years of darkness marked by substance abuse, incarceration, homelessness, paranoia, and loss — despite once having scholarships, athletic success, and opportunity at his fingertips. Addiction followed him across borders, from the U.S. to Europe, proving that distance can’t heal what only truth and connection can.

Everything changed when Marco encountered Christ not as religion, but as a personal invitation. What began as desperation turned into freedom through faith, community, discipline, and surrender. Today, Marco serves as the Owner of Journey to Solutions Educational Resource Center, President of Journey to Solutions Recovery Ministry, Vice President of PRP Nonprofit, and host of the Journey 2 Solutions Podcast — all rooted in servant leadership and the belief that lives can be restored and purpose rediscovered.

This episode is about more than recovery. It’s about identity, redemption, and the power of grace to rewrite even the darkest story.

If you’re struggling with addiction, mental health, shame, or feeling too far gone — this conversation is for you.

<itunes:summary>Today on Primary Purpose with Pej, we sit down with Allison Smith — a domestic violence survivor, single mother, and woman who has walked the path of sobriety for over 10 years, one day at a time.

Faith-driven and deeply committed to healing, Allison shares her story with honesty and courage. What began as survival became transformation — learning how to rebuild her life, reclaim her voice, and raise her child while staying grounded in sobriety, faith, and personal accountability.

This conversation explores what it means to heal after abuse, how sobriety becomes a foundation for empowerment, and why sharing your story can become an act of service. Allison doesn’t speak from theory — she speaks from lived experience, reminding us that recovery isn’t just about staying sober, it’s about choosing yourself every day.

This episode is for anyone navigating trauma, addiction, faith, or single parenthood — and for anyone who needs proof that strength can be rebuilt from the hardest places.

<title>From Psychosis to Purpose | Michael’s Journey Through Addiction, Homelessness, and Recovery</title>
<description>Michael’s life took him across the world — from New Jersey to Puerto Rico to Hong Kong — but addiction followed no matter how far he ran.

Despite a strong upbringing and early success in sports, Michael began drinking at 12 and was addicted to heroin by 18. After leaving college and cycling through rehab, he built a successful career in shipping and logistics. On the outside, life looked stable — but addiction pulled him into street life, homelessness, and a near-fatal overdose.

What followed was a brutal turning point. Michael survived 70 days of drug-induced psychosis, entered sober living, attended 180 meetings in 90 days, completed all 12 steps, and rebuilt his life from the ground up. Starting with nothing — even cleaning toilets just to survive — he slowly reclaimed structure, dignity, and purpose.

Today, Michael is a certified alcohol and drug counselor, the owner of The Hope Experience, LLC, and is opening a sober living home dedicated to helping others find recovery and meaning.

This episode of Primary Purpose with Pej is about humility, perseverance, and the courage it takes to start over — one day at a time.

<title>The Doctor Who Saved 80,000 Lives | The Untold Story of Dr. Faried Banihamd</title>
<description>Today on Primary Purpose with Pej, we sit down with a man whose life’s work has quietly transformed tens of thousands of lives — long before addiction medicine was respected, understood, or widely practiced.

Dr. Faried Banihamd began his career in academic emergency medicine, teaching and researching at UCLA/Kern Medical Center and later UC Irvine. But despite a prestigious path, his true calling led him somewhere far more difficult and far more meaningful: directly into the world of addiction. He stepped into methadone clinics, detox centers, outpatient programs, and some of the most underserved and complex cases imaginable — years before harm reduction or medication-assisted treatment were accepted, and long before benzo tapers or polypharmacy management became common practice.

Patients call him a magician — not because he performs miracles, but because he listens, observes, and treats people who have been dismissed elsewhere. Over the course of his career, he has helped more than 80,000 patients navigate addiction, trauma, medication mismanagement, and the long road back to hope.

Today, he runs Zephyr Medical Group in Orange County, continuing his mission to serve the underserved, consult on high-complexity cases, train institutions, work with legal teams, and design private detox and rehabilitation plans for patients around the world. In 2017, he was named one of Orange County’s Top Influencers, recognizing the impact of his work on individuals, families, and systems across the globe.

Guided by the St. Augustine quote he lives by — “Hope has two beautiful daughters; their names are Anger and Courage” — Dr. Banihamd’s story is one of purpose, compassion, and the courage to fight for a better way forward.

Please welcome to the show: Dr. Faried Banihamd, MD.

<title>The Woman Who Never Gave Up On Me | A Mother &amp; Son’s Story of Redemption</title>
<description>Today’s episode is one of the most emotional and personal conversations I’ve ever shared.
For the first time, I’m sitting down with the person who knows my story better than anyone — my mom.

Together, we talk about the years of heartbreak, fear, and hope our family went through as I battled addiction and found my way back to life. She watched me lose everything, and she also watched me rebuild from nothing. Her strength, boundaries, and faith carried me when I couldn’t carry myself.

This episode isn’t just about addiction or recovery — it’s about the unconditional power of a mother’s love, the beauty of forgiveness, and the grace of second chances.

If you’ve ever loved someone who’s struggled, or if you’ve ever needed someone to believe in you when you couldn’t believe in yourself — this one’s for you.

<description>In this gripping episode of Primary Purpose with Pej, we sit down with Eric Duffner — a man whose life has been defined by extremes. From teenage ICU stays and prison hustles, to building and burning millions, to the devastating murder of his father, Eric’s story is one of chaos, addiction, and survival.

Eric opens up about:

Growing up rebellious and running from authority

Becoming a drug dealer while battling his own heroin addiction

Near-death overdoses, ICU stays, and life behind bars

Losing everything — money, freedom, and dignity

The devastating day his father, a respected surgeon, was murdered

The spiral that followed, including overdoses and public shame

And most importantly — how he found the strength to keep fighting for his life

This is not just a story about addiction — it’s about resilience, redemption, and finding purpose when all seems lost.

<title>From Struggles to Strength: Ottis Johnson's Inspiring Recovery Will Leave You Speechless!</title>
<description>In this episode of Primary Purpose, Pej sits down with Ottis Johnson, Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor at New Directions for Women, to discuss one of the most overlooked—but most powerful—parts of recovery: family healing.

Ottis explains why treating only the addict isn’t enough, and how untreated family dysfunction often sets the stage for relapse. Through his work leading family groups, he has seen firsthand how family members discover the impact addiction has had on their own lives—emotionally, psychologically, physically, and even financially—despite never using substances themselves.

By learning healthier ways to respond, families can create a safe, supportive environment where their loved one has the best chance to thrive in recovery. Because as Ottis reminds us: addiction is a family disease, and true healing must involve the whole family.

<title>Discover How One Woman Went from Addiction to Spiritual Freedom!</title>
<description>In this powerful episode of Primary Purpose with Pej, we sit down with Jessy—a native Angeleno, co-owner of Namaste Sober Living, and a woman who has turned 16 years of addiction into a life of service, healing, and purpose.

With multiple years of continuous sobriety, Jessy shares her deeply personal journey through recovery and the spiritual awakening that followed. From the depths of addiction to building a safe haven for women in early recovery, Jessy has embraced honesty, open-mindedness, and self-expression as her guiding principles. Her story is a testament to what’s possible when we surrender, heal, and lean into our true selves.

Jessy also opens up about her passion for holistic healing—breathwork, cold plunges, meditation, movement—and how these practices have transformed her recovery. She’s not only a mentor and advocate, but a creative force, currently launching a clothing brand, Broken Bandit, that celebrates authenticity and bold self-expression.

Whether you're in recovery or just seeking deeper meaning, this episode is a reminder that transformation is possible—and purpose is waiting on the other side of pain.

      <title>I Survived a SWAT Shooting: Tye Helmer's Incredible Story</title>
<description>Tye Helmer’s story is one of pain, persistence, and profound transformation. After ten years of sobriety in the '90s, he relapsed for 15 years—trapped in a cycle of resentment, isolation, and self-destruction. His rock bottom came in 2016, when he barricaded himself inside his condo and was shot twice in the chest by SWAT. Even after surviving that, the grip of alcoholism held tight for six more months.Everything changed on May 17, 2017, when Tye walked into a meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous and had a spiritual experience that removed the obsession to drink. From that moment on, he committed to the AA way of life, taking the actions suggested and learning to live with purpose and humility.Today, Tye is surrounded by family, friends, and a thriving business. His life is grounded in service, spiritual growth, and gratitude—proof that even the darkest stories can lead to redemption.
