<title>Healthcare's Missing Logic: Attention Leaders! Busy is a Badge of Burnout</title>
      <link>https://www.missinglogic.com/</link>
<description>How many times do you say, “I’m fine, I’m just really busy” when people ask you how you are?
Being busy becomes a status symbol as a leader. In fact, the more you can do, the more you’re asked to do, and the more you feel you’re bringing value to your team and your organization.
In this podcast episode, we talk about why being busy is a badge of burnout, not honor. We also discuss the importance of setting boundaries for leaders and some warning signs of wearing a badge of burnout.

<title>Healthcare Provider Happy Hour: From Passion to Burnout: A Transplant Specialist's Journey with Dr. David Weill</title>
<description>In this week’s episode, I am joined by Dr. David Weill, an esteemed transplant specialist, who directed multiple transplant programs for two decades, notably serving as the Director of the Center for Advanced Lung Disease and Lung and Heart-Lung Transplant Program at Stanford University Medical Center. In 2016, he made the unexpected decision to leave his prestigious position due to burnout, having witnessed the challenges and limitations of organ transplants firsthand. Dr. Weill's captivating memoir, "Exhale: Hope, Healing, and A Life in Transplant," delves into the immense psychological pressure faced by medical professionals and the toll it took on his successful career in transplantation. The book also explores hospital politics, healthcare inequities, and the ethical dilemmas surrounding life-saving transplants.
Presently, Dr. Weill serves as the Principal of the Weill Consulting Group, focusing on enhancing pulmonary, ICU, and transplant care delivery. He has testified twice before the U.S. Senate on the impact of inhaled occupational exposures on lung health, appeared before state legislatures, and delivered extensive lectures at prominent medical conferences and academic centers worldwide.
Additionally, Dr. Weill is an accomplished author with contributions to book chapters, editorials, and medical articles published in reputable sources such as the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Salon, Newsweek, the Chicago Tribune, STAT, the Washington Post, The Hill, and the Los Angeles Times. His expertise has garnered attention from major media outlets, including Fox, CNN, the New York Times, the San Francisco Chronicle, the Wall Street Journal, and the Doctors TV show.

Tune in to this week’s episode to learn:

How Dr. Weill found his path into the medical field and what inspired him to pursue a career in transplantation

Reflections on what he loved most about his profession, gaining insights into the fulfilling aspects of being in transplantation

His decision to step away from the profession, exploring the challenges and factors that ultimately led to burnout

Personal strategies for protecting oneself against burnout and maintaining well-being in the medical field

Factors and considerations involved in determining who qualifies as a candidate for life-saving transplants

<title>Women Physicians Lead: Dismissed But Not Forgotten with Dr. Angela Marshall</title>
<description>Season 4: Turning Pain Into Purpose continues with our next guest, Dr. Angela Marshall, a board-certified Internist and the President and CEO of Comprehensive Women’s Health, Inc. Throughout her medical career, Dr. Marshall has impacted the lives of thousands of women and their families.
Dr. Marshall has been repeatedly named ‘Top Doctor’ by the Washingtonian Magazine and Consumer Research Council of America. She was also recently awarded the 2020 Top 100 Women Award in the state of Maryland and was recently featured on the cover of Enterprising Women magazine. As a contributing health expert, Dr. Marshall has appeared on several news programs including CNN, Fox News, and PBS NewsHour, and currently chairs the Board of Directors for the Black Women’s Health Imperative.
She shares with us the devastating loss of her son and how she felt dismissed and overlooked by the healthcare system that she took a sacred oath to uphold and do no harm. She is on a mission to recognize and reduce bias by bringing awareness to patients and communities. She states, ".You cannot really listen to, respect, show empathy for, and believe people if you are operating with an attitude of bias, mistrust, dismissal, or fear. That attitude clouds communication, distorts diagnosis, misdirects treatment, and lessens patient compliance.”
She is the author of a new book Dismissed: Tackling The Biases That Undermine our Healthcare. She provides a unique perspective of being one of America’s top doctors, a woman, and African American, who candidly addresses the issue of bias in healthcare, sharing personal and patient stories and pragmatic solutions.
You can purchase a copy of her book here https://www.amazon.com/Dismissed-Tackling-Biases-Undermine-Health-ebook/dp/B0B6D8PCCV

She is an international speaker, award-winning business coach, and founder and CEO of Family First Health Center, an integrative membership-based family medicine clinic in Daytona Beach, Florida. Considered a “trailblazer” in the medical community, Dr. Haynes founded the first direct primary care clinic in Volusia and Flagler counties as part of her mission to make healthcare more accessible and advocate for the sacredness of the doctor-patient relationship.

As a result of her small group course Direct Primary Care Rx for Success, She helps physicians eliminate insurance hassles, spend less time on paperwork, and more time with family, and practice medicine in line with the values that took them to medical school while increasing their income, inspiration, and impact.
Much like her approach to transforming barriers to healthcare for her patients, Dr. Haynes is on a mission to improve the wellness of physicians and medical professionals. She is the creator of the WHITE COAT SAFE SPACE initiative dedicated to raising awareness, advocacy, and prevention of physician suicide and helping health professionals love the life they live. Dr. Haynes speaks widely on the topics of physician wellness, mental health, lifestyle medicine, and direct primary care.

<title>Inspiring Women with Laurie McGraw: Those gray areas of harassment, pay equity. Real issues. Real advice.</title>
      <link>https://www.inspiringwomen.show/2021/04/19/ep-20-those-gray-areas-of-harassment-pay-equity-real-issues-real-advice/</link>
<description>Laurie McGraw is speaking with Inspiring Woman Susan Gross Sholinsky, an expert on those workforce issues that still exist and really matter.
Susan Gross Sholinsky gives employers the tools they need to make smart decisions about their workforce challenges. She is a sharp, versatile partner to executives, human resources, and in-house legal teams who seek her out for her straight-forward advice and access to boots-on-the-ground resources, regardless of location. Susan also helps employers ensure compliance with the latest local, state, and federal laws, from sexual harassment, to discrimination, restrictive covenants, paid family leave, and accommodations. When a company makes an acquisition, she literally writes the legal and compliance script for ensuring a smooth transition and integrating employees into the new organization. Her succinct talking points help deliver key updates and tough decisions to affected team members.
Whether she’s conducting training on anti-harassment (similar to Epstein Becker Green’s “Halting Harassment” online training tool) or leading training on diversity, internal investigations, or performance documentation best practices, Susan’s effective training style helps managers spot problems early and boost productivity through safe, compliant practices. Susan helps employers respond rapidly to social issues, like the #MeToo or racial justice movements. She spearheaded the firm’s COVID-19 taskforce that provides employers with practical advice supported by training programs compliant in all 50 states, and dozens of pandemic-related policies and forms, as well as client advisories, blog posts, and articles.
Susan holds several leadership positions within the firm, including as Vice Chair of both the Employment Labor &amp; Workforce Management Steering Committee and the Diversity and Professional Development Committee and as a member of the Finance Committee and the Executive Committee of the Women’s Initiative. Among her many professional and community volunteer initiatives, she has served multiple years as New York Co-Chair of 2020 Women on Boards: Global Conversation on Board Diversity. She was also recognized as one of 2020’s Responsible 100 by City &amp; State New York, an award bestowed upon private-sector leaders whose work makes life better in communities in New York City and across the state.

<title>Healthcare For Humans: Latine/Using Community Health Workers to Care for the Undocumented</title>
      <link>https://www.healthcareforhumans.org/</link>
<description>When I first met Dr. Ponce Gonzalez, I was struck by her passion for the Latinx community and her dedication to making a difference in their lives. In today's episode, I had the privilege of sitting down with her to discuss the unique challenges Latina workers face in the healthcare system and the complexities of the Latinx community. As the founder and executive director of the Community Health Worker Coalition for Migrants and Refugees, Dr. Ponce shared her story of being born in Nicaragua, the importance of education, and the impact accents have on Latinas in the professional world.
We delved into the power dynamic between doctors and patients and the concept of being proximate to understand better and support marginalized communities. Dr. Ponce emphasized the crucial role of establishing trust and connection between clinicians and patients, especially for Latinx communities who are often undocumented or face various healthcare access barriers. We also explored how the current system can lead to a health crisis for both documented and undocumented Latinx individuals.
Lastly, we touched on the need for tailored care models and language support for the Latinx community, and the incredible value of a community health worker familiar with the culture and able to provide peer support. I challenge all of our listeners to actively work against any biases, including language or accent bias, and strive to create inclusive workplaces where every voice is heard and respected. Join us in this important conversation and learn from Dr. Ponce Gonzalez's insight and experience as we work together to improve healthcare access and equity for the Latinx community.

<title>The Most Important Medicine: Taking Time for Joy</title>
<description>We're in desperate need to celebrate small joys in life. Join Dr. Amy as she discusses finding joy as a way to avoid re-traumatization. Finding joy helps to ameliorate some of the compounding stressors so that we have energy to draw from during hardships.
This year has been coined, The Year of Sophia. Why? Because my daughter, Sophia, graduates from high school in just 4 days! The “why” is truly important and has allowed me to slow down, set boundaries and be intentional with my time. So, as different opportunities have cropped up for our family, for my business, or for each of us as individuals, the first question is: Will this interfere with any event for senior year? If so, it’s a hard “no.”
But, there are parts of Sophia (and every child) that deserve much brighter lights of celebration. I want to honor, not only her accomplishments, but her character.
Thanks everyone for allowing me to gush about one of my greatest accomplishments. And to all the seniors graduating – I support you and celebrate you. May you find contentedness and reach for your dreams. And to the parents celebrating seniors – I see you. Great job. We did it.

      <link>https://www.healthcareforhumans.org/latinecaring-for-undocumented-latinx-patients-through-illness-narratives-dr-odette-zero-ep-21/</link>
<description>How can we make sense of suffering and create meaning in our lives through illness narratives? Join us as we welcome our special guest Odette, a family medicine physician who specializes in caring for the Latinx community, particularly undocumented individuals. In this captivating conversation, Odette shares her personal experiences with illness narratives in Guatemala and how this approach has shaped her practice in medicine.
We dive into the complexities of providing care for undocumented individuals, exploring the importance of relationship-building with the Latinx community. Odette shares insights on how to talk about intimate partner violence with patients who are undocumented and how Susto, a cultural belief in the cause of illness, plays a part in their understanding of their disease. Together, we uncover valuable strategies for providing culturally responsive care in these challenging situations.
Lastly, we discuss the realities of caring for undocumented patients and how medical professionals can advocate for them on both an individual and system level. Odette emphasizes the need for cultivating hope as an art and skill, and reminds us that even if we may not feel like we are making system-level change, our work can still make a difference for a single patient.
Don't miss this thought-provoking and heartwarming conversation on illness narratives and the intricacies of caring for the undocumented Latinx community.

<title>Healthcare Provider Happy Hour: Actionable Techniques for Lowering Your Stress as a Healthcare Provider</title>
<description>In this week’s episode, I am joined by Dr. Annie White, Author of The Calm Code: Transform Your Mind, Change Your Life. Annie's mission is to help people lower their stress levels with actionable tips they can start using right away. We discuss Annie’s own personal story of applying her methods to overcome a difficult time in her life, why the typical advice for lowering stress doesn’t work and techniques to use instead, plus much more on managing stress as a healthcare provider.
Dr. Annie has a revolutionary step-by-step method to minimize stress and maximize happiness. After becoming a person she didn't recognize, and worse, someone she didn't want to be, she found a way to stop the high-stress, overwhelm, anxiety, irritability nightmare. Her recent book, The Calm Code, was an immediate bestseller with readers calling it life changing and transformational. It's a solid, science-backed method to reduce stress. Jack Canfield, author of Chicken Soup for the Soul says, "Dr. Annie's method can quickly eliminate feelings of stress, anxiety, and overwhelm."

Tune in to this week’s episode to learn:

What moment in Annie’s life made her realize she needed to change &amp; how she overcame that difficult time

Why we get stressed and how our mind is wired to heighten stressful situations

How to manage stressors and actionable methods for overcoming stress

Why the typical advice for lowering stress doesn’t work and what you should be doing instead

Grab your drink of choice and join the conversation!

Please Note: The podcast will be going on pause for the month of December but be sure to tune back in, in January for more of the Healthcare Provider Happy Hour!

<title>Women Physicians Lead: Providing opportunities for a diverse physician workforce with Dr. Valerie Montgomery Rice</title>
<description>I had the pleasure of interviewing Dr. Valerie Montgomery Rice at the NMF 75th Anniversary Gala, where she was the recipient of the NMF National Alumni Lifetime Achievement Award. Listen to how Valerie Montgomery Rice, MD, FACOG, a former recipient of an NMF scholarship as a medical student and now the sixth president of Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) and the first woman to lead the free-standing medical institution is reimagining healthcare.
A renowned infertility specialist and researcher, she most recently served as dean and executive vice president of MSM, where she has served since 2011. Prior to joining MSM, Montgomery Rice held faculty positions and leadership roles at various health centers, including academic health centers. Most notably, she was the founding director of the Center for Women’s Health Research at Meharry Medical College, one of the nation’s first research centers devoted to studying diseases that disproportionately impact women of color.
She is reimagining healthcare with her dedication to the creation and advancement of health equity. Montgomery Rice lends her vast experience and talents to programs that enhance pipeline opportunities for academically diverse learners, diversify the physician and scientific workforce, and foster equity in healthcare access and health outcomes.
A Georgia native, Montgomery Rice holds a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the Georgia Institute of Technology, a medical degree from Harvard Medical School, an honorary degree from the University of Massachusetts Medical School, and a Doctor of Humane Letters honorary degree from Rush University. All reflect her lifetime commitment to education, service, and the advancement of health equity. She completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Emory University School of Medicine and her fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and infertility at Hutzel Hospital.
NationalMedicalFellowships, Inc. believes a just and equitable world requires diverse healthcare leaders who not only bring diverse representation to the medical field but also lead the fight to eliminate health disparities.

<title>The Healthcare Provider Happy Hour: How we can Change the Culture Within Healthcare to Sustain Ourselves and Avoid Burnout, with Dr. Joe Sherman, Physician Coach </title>
<description>I am joined by Dr. Joe Sherman, a practicing physician for over 35 years, a certified physician coach, an educator, and a former administrator. Joe guides organizations to shift outdated workplace culture into a collective leadership model and assists physicians in one-on-one coaching and group retreats to deliver quality care, succeed in leadership roles, and rediscover fulfillment in their careers. We discuss Joe’s journey in healthcare including what has kept him in the profession for over 35 years, what led to his burnout, his anxiety and depression, and what he is doing to change the culture in the field so that others have a positive experience as physicians.
About Joe: “In 2009, after spending 4 years living and working with a mission organization in Bolivia, I returned to the U.S. and my career as a pediatrician at an academic health center. I soon found the institutional, educational, and patient care demands placed upon me to be overwhelming. This eventually led to burnout and a temporary departure from clinical medicine.
After a year of reflection, discernment, and support from family and friends, I was able to identify my core values and integrate them into my future career decision-making. I returned to part-time pediatric practice while developing the skills to accompany other physicians, individually and in groups, to re-discover their passion for medicine.
Having experienced burnout, myself, I understand the day-to-day struggles health professionals face in trying to provide quality care to their patients while also dealing with the systemic dysfunction of healthcare institutions.
I am now a consultant and coach to individuals and healthcare organizations in the areas of burnout mitigation, leadership, and provider well-being. I am a trained retreat facilitator with the Center for Courage &amp; Renewal, a Master Certified Professional Development Coach with the Physician Coaching Institute, and member of the International Coaching Federation.”

Tune in to this week’s episode to learn:

What the systematic root of the problem in the healthcare field is and how we can address it

How you can make a change on an individual level to get closer to your values &amp; what institutions can be doing to care for their employees

Why investing in your own health &amp; setting boundaries is critical for practitioners and their patients

How the pandemic has caused an unsustainable climate in healthcare that is hurting physicians and how we can change this

<title>The Most Important Medicine: Be the Calm in the Storm with Dr. Richard Stone</title>
<description>Dr. Amy &amp; Dr. Stone discuss what it was like leading the nation's largest healthcare system in our country during a global pandemic. Dr. Stone, as the acting Under Secretary for Health of the Veteran's Health Administration, led his team through one of the toughest times in our nation's history - the COVID 19 Pandemic. He's a leader, physician, and consultant with wisdom and strategy that will shape how you think of trauma-informed care at a systemic level. Listen as he breaks down what leadership was like, what got him through and how he was able to take a vacation (yay!) during the middle of the pandemic by surrounding himself with other incredible leaders. His new book, Save Every Life You Can, is an inspirational reflection on this journey.

<title>Women Physicians Lead: Being a Physician is a Calling with Dr. Stephanie Freeman</title>
<description>Season 4: Turning Pain into Passion begins with my next guest Dr. Stephanie E. Freeman who is one of the nation’s most acclaimed ICU physicians. She is a board-certified Critical Care physician, a best-selling author, speaker, and consultant. In addition, she is THE expert in helping doctors discover alternative careers in medicine.
Dr. Stephanie consistently meets with physicians individually and in groups to discuss ways they can get “unstuck” in their careers. A compassionate, motivating, energizing, and resourceful physician, it is no wonder why Dr. Stephanie is known among her colleagues as “The Job Doctor”.
As Founder and Chief Medical Advisor of DrStephanieICU.com, Dr. Stephanie discusses real-world career strategies to help physicians “think outside the box” regarding their careers. By sharing advice on how to find alternative careers in medicine, Dr. Stephanie helps physicians practice medicine on their own terms.
Dr. Stephanie earned her Medical Degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine. She completed her Internal Medicine Residency at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center and her Critical Care Fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Dr. Stephanie also completed a Geriatrics fellowship at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She obtained her Master of Business Administration at Auburn University.
In this episode, we talk about:
·       Who or what was instrumental in her career and leadership journey?
·       Why representation matters
·       Why she feels being a physician is a calling that is sacred.
·       How she turned pain into purpose after being fired from her job
·       Her life and career as a locums doc
·       Three tips for dealing with adversity and challenges.
You can connect with Dr. Stephanie Freeman on IG and TikTok @drstephanieicu and on FB @drstephanie
