From Hungary with love (language) with Rebecca Makkai

Rebecca Makkai is borderline obsessive with language. When you read her books, it feels like every sentence and every word is exactly where it should be. When you find out that she's on a quest to learn one of the world's most difficult languages, it's easy to understand why words matter so much to her. Rebecca's latest book, I Have Some Questions for You, uses her obsession with language to tell a story riddled with deep character construction. We dive into both her loves, writing the perfect story and learning the challenging language of her father, and what it was like growing up with linguists as parents.

World of War...craftin' a mystery with Leah Konen

Leah Konen knows how to craft a thriller. She's made a career out of writing page turning stories that keep you on the edge of your seat and You Should Have Told me is no different. You'll be left guessing until the very end. It's almost as if she's made it her quest to build out a stunning narrative. Which makes when sense when you hear about her love of the long form adventures she's fallen in love with from the World of Warcraft computer game.
In this discussion, Leah and Adam talk about their shared history with online gaming, whether a twist has to be unguessable for a book to be a mystery, and much more.

Home restoration infatuation with Mimi Herman

Mimi Herman's new book, The Kudzu Queen, is all about a mysterious man who comes into town looking to shake things up. In her own way, Mimi was that strange person when she bought a house, nearly site unseen, that she could afford to purchase but could not afford to pay someone else to fix up. And so, she learned plumbing. And painting. And electric. And a million other things that went into home restoration. And she grew to LOVE it.

Getting folkin’ terrified with Grady Hendrix

Grady Hendrix’s new novel, How to Sell a Haunted House, is the culmination of what his career as a horror novelist has been all about: building terror through emotion and experiences we can all relate to. They discuss his early years living in England, how he came to be known as “the horror book” person, what makes a good story in eyes and so much more. They then turn the episode into an impromptu horror book recommendation session (see below!)

Books mentioned in this episode
Folklore, Superstitions, and Legends of Great Britain
Children of the Corn by Stephen King
Harvest Home by Tom Tryon
Young Goodman Brown by Nathaniel Hawthorne
The Call by Peadar O'Guilin
Ring Shout by P. Djèlí Clark
The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones
Devolution by Max Brooks
The House Next Door by Anne Rivers Siddons
The Elementals by Michael McDowell

In this discussion, Victoria and Adam discuss her childhood growing up in the vegetable fields of Ohio and her experience with plant ceremonies and how they've helped to come to terms with the world around her. It's a deeply interesting conversation about opening our minds and learning to accept what the world has given us.

A picture is worth a whole novel with Kerri Schlottman

A picture is worth a whole novel with Kerri Schlottman
Kerri Schottman has always been fascinated by photojournalism. She loves the stories that can be conveyed by a single picture and she’s had a great deal of exposure to the artists who take them. She found herself thinking about the concepts of how photos can remove the subject's voice in a way when we only look at a picture. This is how her new novel, Tell Me One Thing, came to be.
This is a deep discussion about where stories come from, how we find them, and why it matters who they are conveyed.

Books mentioned in this episode
Between Two Kingdoms by Suleika Jaouad
Abundance by Jakob Guanzon

Talking dirty and getting clean with Penny Reid!

Wow does this episode cover a lot! Iconic romance author Penny Reid opens this discussion by discussing her obsession with crafting before getting why and how she learned to make soap before getting into her deep dive into essential oils. We then bring up a classic Penny Reid concept- KNITTING!
But wait… there’s more! We also chat about the “Penny Reid-iverse” by getting into her journey as a self-published author, what it means to be a “traditional” published author, and how she created her own publishing imprint Smarty Pants Romance.
We also get into her always interesting research process which most recently sent her down the rabbit hole of learning about the lives of strippers and strip club owners… I promise this all ties together and leads to her new book, Folk Around and Find Out!

Ugly is in the eye of the beholder with Nikki Payne

Nikki Payne, debut author of Pride and Protest, is a cultural anthropologist by day who spends her time thinking about big questions and how to answer them. On this episode, she joins Adam to discuss one of the questions she's spent her life thinking about: What does it mean to be "ugly".
She opens the conversation by explaining how her fascination began with the movie, The Color Purple and has continued to this day. Nikki has even taught a college course about the idea of ugliness and how it's portrayed.
Another one of Nikki's fascinations is the work of Jane Austen, which is how her debut novel came to be. It's a must-read modern reconfiguring of Pride and Protest that you're going to love.
Books mentioned in this episode
The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August by Claire North
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
House of Hunger by Alexis Henderson
The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones
Teeth in the Mist by Dawn Kurtagich

Entering The Twilight Zone with Rachel Harrison

Rachel Harrison has quickly established herself as one of THE defining voices of the horror genre. She exploded onto the scene several years ago with her terrifying and unnerving debut The Return before following that up with the equally spooky Cackle. Both books were not only atmospheric and gothic, but they also were extremely well written, the pages flying by. Her newest book, Such Sharp Teeth, does the same. If you're a fan of werewolf books (and who isn't!) it's a must read.
Rachel has a spent her life seemingly preparing to write scary books with shocking plot twists, given her obsession with The Twilight Zone. In this episode, Adam and Rachel discuss her introduction to the classic TV series, get into the history of why the show was so groundbreaking, and how she's spent her career trying to write stories like Rod Serling.
Books mentioned in this episode:

Witches Brenda Lozano (translated by Heather Cleary)

The Hacienda by Isabel Cañas

The Fervor by Alma Katsu

Tumblr and Twilight will never go out of style with Alexis Henderson

Alexis Henderson took the world by storm with her debut novel, The Year of the Witching, back in 2020 and now she’s back with another gothic book just in time for spooky season! Eventually, we discuss House of Hunger, where A young woman is drawn into the upper echelons of a society where blood is power but first Alexis shares where her aesthetic was born: The early 2020s Tumblr scene.
We get into what the app meant to her as a teenager before getting into her undying love of Twilight and cult show Skins UK. Adam also offers a creepy book recommendation to kick off the episode when he discusses The Companion by Katie Alender.
The discussion ends with Alexis recommending several books including: The Blood Trials by N.E. Davenport, The Hacienda by Isabel Cañas, Babel by RF Kuang, and Wild and Wicked Things by Francesca May

Collecting a legacy with Kimberly Latrice Jones

Kimberly Jones knows the importance of history. Her powerful book, How We Can Win is all about the history of systemic racism in the United States and leveling the playing field. The New York Times bestselling I’m Not Dying with You Tonight, co-written with Gilly Segal, is based on actual race riots. Also, she’s currently working on a biography of her mother, a trailblazer in multiple ways.
She also understands legacy and that the things she leaves behind will be part of the way she’s remembered. In this conversation, Kim and Adam talk about the things Kim collects ranging from Cabbage Patch Dolls and Yo! MTV Raps cards to hard to find books to… much stranger things.
Adam and Kim first met way before Kim took the world by storm with her powerful and emotional speech about the inequality in America during the George Floyd protests. Their friendship is one of goofiness and shared adoration. This conversation is like sneaking into a family Sunday meal and listening in as they joke about the many things that have meaning to us.
