Cody has since transitioned to learning everything he possibly could about the public hunting grounds of south central Iowa and documenting his journey on his YouTube channel “Public Land Whitetails”.  

We talk about a good variety of whitetail stories and anecdotes from observations over the years, but the main takeaway from each story, the link between most of Cody’s biggest bucks, is that each buck was using the wind to absolute greatest advantage. Cody found how and where he would be able to successfully give the Buck the wind advantage but still be able to kill. In most cases this required Cody to do something DIFFERENT. Jeremy starts off discussing his first bow kill on a beautiful P&Y buck, which came together all too easily. This fast and successful start to Jeremy’s hunting career led him to quickly focus on holding out for trophy bucks. Then Jeremy dives into some tactics he uses on private ground, where he has permission to hunt, vs. the public marshes he hunts. He discusses how and why he uses trail cameras on both public and private and the type of set ups he uses to put himself in the chips. 

Jeremy shares a story of a giant 10-point he took this past season with his longbow. His story illustrates not only how to effectively set up to intercept cruising bucks searching for does, but also the importance of being confident in your set up. In Jeremy’s story, he had originally chosen a tree to hunt out of during off season scouting, but after setting up for his hunt, he quickly realized that there was a better option just 30-40 yards away, so without hesitation, he pulled his stand and made the move. This move shortly led to a close encounter and an even closer shot on a mature buck. 

Jeremy also talks about tactics for getting into deer on public ground and not wasting your time hunting spots that aren’t “in it”. He lays down some great ideas and thoughts on scouting your way into the woods and knowing when to hang and spend time.

In this episode Derek talks with Lone Wolf Custom Gear team member, Zack Robb. Zach is from central Virginia and has transitioned from somewhat agricultural hunting land to more rigorous mountain terrain. This challenging terrain has really inspired Zack to push himself and learn to hunt mountain bucks. 

Zack starts with a story about the first buck he was able to observe bump from a bed, then make a game plan to gain intel on the buck, and eventually set up to kill the buck. Zack used a few different tactics including knowledge of buck bedding tendencies, mock scrape intel with a trail cam, and a bump and dump after heading in to hunt the buck bed but jumping a doe group on his way in.

Derek revisits some of his old honey holes, but things are different…VERY different! After a large straight-line wind storm hit the area about 8 years ago, logging crews have been busy clear-cutting most of the area. This has added plenty of browse and new food sources for the wildlife, but it definitely requires boots on the ground to locate the new best spots to intercept a buck during the high-pressure gun season. 

Derek walks the viewer through the thought process of how and where he is scouting. We look at how deer relate to clear cuts and different terrain “traps” that help funnel deer into monotonous terrain.

Rodney and Derek start by chatting about the terrain and territory that Rodney hunts in the NE. This big woods terrain is not only challenging on hunters but also the deer population.  They discuss deer habits and behaviors and how that relates to time of year and the landscape they live in.
