Born in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania but raised and educated in Ohio, Midgley graduated from Cornell University before launching a career that would change the modern world. Working with Charles Kettering at Dayton Research Laboratoriesin Dayton, Midgley helped solve one of the automobile industry’s biggest problems — engine knock — by introducing tetraethyl lead into gasoline.

The result? The rise of “leaded gasoline,” a breakthrough that powered the rapid expansion of the automotive age. But the consequences would prove devastating. Millions were exposed to toxic lead emissions, with public health impacts that echoed for generations.

Midgley didn’t stop there. He later helped develop chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), marketed under the brand name Freon, which were hailed as safe, non-toxic refrigerants. Decades later, scientists would discover that CFCs were destroying Earth’s protective ozone layer — leading to global environmental crisis and the landmark Montreal Protocol.

In this episode, we ask: Were these catastrophic outcomes foreseeable? What responsibility do inventors bear for the unintended consequences of their creations? And how should Ohio remember a man whose innovations both fueled progress and harmed the planet?

Bridges are meant to connect places—but sometimes, they connect us to tragedy, mystery, and unanswered questions.

In this episode, we explore three bridges with notorious pasts, each carrying its own legacy making them stand out among the many Ohio bridges.

We begin in Fremont, Ohio, at the Tindall Bridge, a quiet river crossing tied to violent deaths, local legends, and lingering paranormal claims. What happened here, and why has its story endured for generations?

On a cold winter night in December 1876, a passenger train thundered across the Ashtabula River in northeastern Ohio—never reaching the other side. Founded in 1898 on 240 acres of farmland donated to the state, Massillon State Hospital opened its doors under the name Eastern Ohio Mental Asylum. Its first patients came from 21 Ohio counties. 

At its peak in the 1950s, the hospital housed more than 3,100 patients and employed roughly 365 staff — part of what many regarded as one of “the most beautiful institutions in the world.” 

But as treatments and mental-health policies evolved, the massive institution began to shrink. By the mid-1970s many patients were transferred out, and over decades the facility gradually shifted identities — eventually becoming Heartland Behavioral Health Center. 

The origins: how farmland donated by early settlers became a state asylum.

Lives within the walls: personal stories, struggles, and survival in a sprawling mental-health institution.

The rise and fall: how peak expansion gave way to decline, changing mental-health philosophies, and shifting societal attitudes.

What remains today: the buildings, the memories, the legacy — and the efforts to preserve or repurpose pieces of its history.

We discuss the mysterious Toledo Speedboat disaster of 1930. On a hot Saturday morning in June, 1930, eight Toledoans set out on a speedboat to attend an Elks picnic on Pelee Island and never made it. Their boat would be found spinning in circles without a soul onboard. The well to do men would be found dead a few days later and rumors began to circulate about what happened and who was responsible.

In our next story, we explore the long history of the Ghost Ship of the Ohio River, the Sachem. This luxury liner has a very long history of entertaining many well to do of the East Coast elite as well as serving the military where Thomas Edison conducted experiements to bootlegging, to fishing charters to sight seeing touring and a wild journey through the middle of the country to where it sits today, at a tributary off of the Ohio River.

When Ohio was still considered the countries frontier, legendary Wyandot leader "Leatherlips" helped broker peace deals with the European settlers. This didnt sit well with his fellow tribesman and would ultimately cost him his life.

A striking monument stands today in his memory, evocative of the legendary "Sitting Bull" monument. Overlooking the Scioto Rive in Dublin, Ohio, this limestone monument stands today as a tribute to the legendary warrior chief.

Traveling West, is the infamous "Blue Hole" of Castalia. Once rumored to have no bottom, this crystal clear pool dumps millions of gallons into the Sandusky Bay each day. Once attracting over 165,00 people each year, this location was closed in 1990 and is in private hands today. However, similar type pools are located close by that you can visit. You can even win a chance to be one of the lucky few to have a chance to visit the original park.

Finally, did you know that Ohio had an amusement park that is only open 4 days a year? It has 2 roller coasters many smaller rides and games. Built by the Stricker family, you can attend (on one of the 4 days, you will have to listen to find out which 4).

On the cold dark morning of January 10, 1954, in a lonely rail yard a railroad work would observe a mysterious figure of a man, slipping away into the darkness of night, slinking away from the tracks. Almost immediately, the railroad worker would observe the corpse of a woman, having experienced severe trauma and very much dead despite a lack of blood at the scene. The body would identified as Mary Grimes Wallace and the mystery was underway.

What follows is an intriguing story that still has authorities baffled today without conclusions despite 3 different exhumations.

We discuss the mysterious 1940 death of Noreen Mozee. Mrs. Mozee would embark on the luxury liner, SeeAndBee in Cleveland, Ohio on an overnight journey to Buffalo, NY. However something went wrong along the way and Noreen Mozee would go missing, along with her money and jewelry until her battered body would be discovered washed up on the beach on Geneva-on-the-Lake. She was not identified at the time and buried in a paupers grave. When her identity was discovered, the mystery only deepened. Was she murdered? Was it suicide? Was he crew involved? 1994 would prove to be an awful year for the community of people surrounding Berlin Lake, Ohio. In the span of a year, the bodies of 4 people would be discovered in the woods off of Berlin Lake on a lonely, isolated Fewtown Road. The murders remain unsolved to this day. Lisa Watters, Andy Hussey, Kathryn Menendez and Sarah Boehm would all wind up here, their bodies discovered within a short distance from each other. While police had many leads, no suspects were charged despite the best efforts of the local police, sheriff and the FBI.
