Bob Cousy:

A 13-time NBA All-Star and 1957 NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP), Cousy was a core piece during the early half of the Celtics dynasty winning six NBA championships during his 13-year tenure with the Celtics. Nicknamed "The Houdini of the Hardwood", Cousy was the NBA assists leader for eight consecutive seasons, introducing a new blend of ball-handling and passing skills to the NBA.[2] He is regarded as the first great point guard of the NBA, and was the first to reach the 4,000, 5,000, and 6,000 career assists milestones.

JoJo White:

In the 1969 NBA draft, White was drafted 9th overall by the Boston Celtics, with whom he would play for ten seasons, winning the NBA Finals in 1974 and 1976 and being named Finals MVP the latter year. A seven-time NBA All-Star, White set a Celtics record with 488 consecutive games played. White's No. 10 jersey was retired by the Celtics in 1982. In 2015, he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

Dennis “DJ” Johnson:

nicknamed "DJ", was an American professional basketball player for the National Basketball Association's (NBA) Seattle SuperSonics, Phoenix Suns, and Boston Celtics. He was a coach of the Los Angeles Clippers and an alumnus of Dominguez High School, Los Angeles Harbor College and Pepperdine University.

Tiny Archibald:

He spent 14 years playing in the National Basketball Association (NBA), most notably with the Cincinnati Royals/Kansas City–Omaha Kings and Boston Celtics. In 1991, he was enshrined into both the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the New York City Basketball Hall of Fame.

Rajon Rondo:

During his time in Boston, Rondo helped the Celtics advance to the NBA Finals in 2008 and 2010, winning a championship in 2008 as the team's starting point guard. Rondo is known to be a versatile facilitator in the NBA, leading the league in assists three times and in steals once; he also ranks fourth in Celtics history in assists and third in steals. Rondo has sometimes been described as a "stat-sheet stuffer",ranking 15th in NBA history for triple-doubles with 32 in the regular season, and fifth in NBA history for triple-doubles with 10 in the playoffs.

The NBA All Star game always have an over lining theme of nostalgia. This event is not only the greatest compilation or current NBA talent but it also reunites more NBA legends, in 1 city for a long weekend. For boomers like me, it’s absolutely basketball bliss.

CLNS sent 2 reporters and a camera crew to cover the star studded event. Needless to say that when it was apparent that Larry Bird would headline the entire week, I was quite jealous and angry with myself for passing on the opportunity to attend as credentialed media.

Once our reporters returned from Indianapolis, I wasted no time in getting Bobby Manning in the studio to discuss all things Larry Bird, All Star Friday & Saturday and the lousy “main event,” the actual game which most no one over 15 years old truly enjoyed.

We also discuss the impact being around Larry Legend had on the all star players, especially our Celtics, Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.

1981 NBA Playoffs: That Cinderella Season Part 3: Cedric 'Cornbread' Maxwell Becomes MVP

Just as Larry Bird was dubbed very early in his career as "Larry Legend," that moniker would follow him every time he's lace up his converse. But it was in this houston series, when the 23 year old Bird faced the discomfort of swarming defense that when his shot doesn't fall, he can still contribute and lead his team to victory.

In the first 3 games, Bird would uncharacteristically turn the ball over nearly 5 times per game and shooting just 40% from the field. Where The Bird-man seemed lost on offense he certainly wasn't on defense.

Bird dominated the boards, absolutely crucial when playing against the rebounding machine in Malone. Bird would also tally ELEVAN STEALS through first 3 games.

Max was about to take over.

The celtics were determined to avenge their game 2 loss. Games 3 and 4 in Houston had the Celtics on lock down defensive. In game 3, Del Harris squad could only muster 32 first half points.

The physicality was 1980's bully ball at its best.

In game 3, the Celtics would blow out the Rockets by 20 in the Summit. Houston could only connect for 71 points as the rough and tumble style of play swung in Boston's direction.

Tiny Archibald and Robert Parish continued to be a no factor in game 3. Larry Bird particularly struggled, connecting on only 3 of 11 shots.

As was the case with Houston's role players in Boston, in game 3, it was Maxwell and Chris Ford who carried the weight of the offense. Maxwell in particular, had voiced his displeasure with his teammates after game 2. Max stepped up to the occasion in games 3 and 4, he'd score 43 points and grabbed 28 rebounds. But Larry Bird's single digit scoring in Houston caught up with Boston as they'd split again.

Now back to Boston for the pivotal game 5.

Larry Bird's scoring slump would continue as he averaged less than 10 points in games 3, 4, and 5. Added to Bird's struggles was the smothering defense of Robert Reid. Maxwell would undoubtedly pick up the slack but in 2021, Max would explain why this tough series for Larry Bird, started his path to becoming a legend.

The Celtics faithful had been here before but, in Max's first 2 season, the franchise would hit only their second rebuild period since Red Auerbach arrived in 1950. Maxwell knew his time to win it all was now. Behind Cornbread's hot steak, the would decimate the Rockets in game 5. Boston Garden erupted, sending off their Celtics to close out the series in Houston. Fans would've loved to win it at home to add another Garden party to the franchise's mystique. But having seen the resiliency of the Rockets, no one wanted a game 7.

The Celtics had to close it out in game 6, and they'd slam the door shut on the Rockets cinderella season.

Behind another clutch performance from Mad-Max in game 6, Larry Bird came alive, and fly he would. This series was all over and Boston was once again the World Champions.

Cedric Maxwell received all but 1 vote and was named the Sporting News NBA Finals Most Valuable player. While some fans disagreed with the media selection of Maxwell as the winner of the MVP award, on his retirement ceremony in 1993, Larry Legend himself declared Max the key to their 1981 title, validating Cedric as the true MVP.

1981 NBA Playoffs: That Cinderella Season Part 2: Celtics vs 76ers 😳 Larry Bird, vs Doctor J,

Over the course of the Boston Celtics 35 year history, to that point, they had won nearly 50% of all championships won in league history.

Needless to say, the Celtics in the nba finals in springtime had become a perennial event. An expectation, not a random occurrence.

By 1981 however, the dynasty seasons were becoming a distant memory. Long gone were the cigar smoke filled sidelines of 8 consecutive titles. Russell, Cousy, Cowens, Heinsohn and Havlicek were no longer running the parquet floor. From 1976 to 1979, the Celtics were irrelevant and the rest of the nba seemed to revel in the unfamiliar pain of losing in Boston.

In fall of 1979, The sun finally came out in Boston again with the arrival of a new head coach, a new point guard and the savior of the franchise, Larry Joe Bird.

By the time Houston and Boston advanced to the NBA finals both were underdogs in their respective conference finals. Although Boston had won 62 games, the Philadelphia 76ers eliminated them a year earlier, having had gone down 3-1, losing in 5 games.

The winner of the ‘81 nba finals was sure to be the next champion of the nba.

Surely it was the celtics express wish to dethrone the Lakers of their 1980 championship but the Houston Rockets had other plans. Boston would find out just how much of a feisty opponent the 40 win Rockets would be.

The NBA in 1981 meant - Larry Bird, Moses Malone, Magic Johnson, Ice Man & Doctor J.

The #1981 NBA playoffs featured the same cast of eastern conference characters. Philadelphia jumped out to Another 3-1 lead on the Celtics but this time it didn't pan out like the season before. The #BostonCeltics would advance to the NBA Finals. It was their first appearance since winning the title in 1976.

Meanwhile, out west it also seemed like a familiar story. the defending champion Lakers were sure to quickly dispose of the lowly 40 win Houston Rockets.

The Lakers were tied in the mini series 1-1 with the Rockets. Game 3 was in the Fabulous Forum and there was no way that the Lakers would lose

Unfortunately for them, Paul Westhead & Pat Riley didn't game plan enough for role player, Mike Dunleavy

The unlikely veteran smacked LA and disposed of the defending world champions.

Now on to San Antonio, as the Cinderella tour continues.

Up next? The 52 win San Antonio Spurs. George Gervin and company look to derail the Rockets but history would be different in 1981. It was, a Cinderella season.

Through the sheer dominance of #MosesMalone, Del Harris commands the tempo early, slowing down the pace to utilize Malone's might.

Game 1 goes to the Rockets and it seems midnight is nowhere in sight.

Reid would be pivotal 4 years later, when another Houston team would make an unlikely run. But in game 3 against the Spurs, Reid would score 33 in a losing effort.

Game 6, however, would belong to Moses. He and Reid would again muster a win in San Antonio. But it was MOSES who would lead his flock into the promised land and he did it, as always, by dominating the offensive glass.

It was the 2 greatest words in team sports, GAME 7! And in the biggest game in Houston Rockets history, Coach Del Harris would call upon his smallest man in stature…

Calvin Murphy would stake his claim to legend status in this clincher. Calvin, the acclaimed baton twirler, twirled in 42 daggers and the little man came up big once again

Finally, the 11 year veteran would get his recognition.

The Spurs were ready to put Houston on ICE and they had the right Star to do it. George Gervin kept the spurs ahead and game 2 was there's, but not before Robert Reid let the nba know that he had arrived.

This Cinderella series would start in Kansas City.

Scott Wedman aimed to continue the heat he laid on the Suns. But Kansas City struggled in game 1 it went to Houston.

As Coach Del Harris had preached all season long, Success came in ONE WORD: MOSES.

Pounding the paint repeatedly allowed Malone to plant his feet firmly in the midrange, where he dominates most.

Kansas City simply couldn't keep Moses and company off the boards sparking the fast break, accentuated by the 5 foot 9 inch Murphy.

The Rockets wrapped it up in 5 games, closing it out in Kansas City's gym.

The city of Houston had become believers in the Rockets! Now, the fireball rockets had their biggest challenge ahead of them…
