Celebrating 50 years of Foghat in 2021, Roger Earl is still ferociously banging away! Born in London, England (Hampton Court & raised in Hounslow) in 1946 to a musical family where his father played piano at home and local pubs and there was always music in the house. Although he wanted to play piano, his older brother Colin Earl (keyboard player with the band Mungo Jerry of ‘In the Summertime’ fame) won that right. Roger began to play drums at the age of 12, took lessons for two years, and played with local bands around London while working as a commercial artist. He had a measure of success before auditioning for and joining the British Blues band Savoy Brown at age 20, with whom he recorded 5 albums (1967-1970) and toured the U.S. extensively.

In 1970, Roger and Lonesome Dave Peverett decided to leave Savoy Brown to form Foghat. They enlisted former Savoy bass player Tony Stevens and Slide guitarist Rod Price and the rest has been rock n’ roll history.

After the group split in 1969 he formed the band Argent who enjoyed several hits in the 1970’s including “Hold Your Head Up”. Rock ‘n’ roll recording artists and globe-trotting journeymen Devon Allman and Donavon Frankenreiter recently released their collaborative EP called Rollers, a 6- song collection features the singles “Calling All You Riders” and “See It All” as well as a guest appearance from Maggie Rose on the new track “We Belong.”

The duo is also currently on their See It All American Tour, which has Allman and Frankenreiter attempting to set the Official World Record for fastest time to play a concert in each of the 50 states, currently 50 in 50 days set in 2003. Veteran rock ’n’ roll tunesmith Marshall Crenshaw's beloved body of work encompasses ten studio albums as well as a variety of EPs, compilations and live discs. Fee Waybill is the lead singer and songwriter of San Francisco band The Tubes. Waybill has also worked with many other acts, including Toto, Richard Marx and Bryan Adams among others and has appeared in several motion pictures and TV shows.

The Tubes formed in 1972 from two bands that moved to the Bay Area from Phoenix and still consist of its original members to this day. Paul Gilbert is an American hard rock and heavy metal guitarist. He is a co-founder of the internationally successful band Mr. Big. He was also a member of Racer X, with whom he released several albums. In 1996, Gilbert launched a solo career, for which he has released numerous solo albums, and featured in numerous collaborations and guest appearances on other musicians' albums.

In 1975 Jerry auditioned for a Woodstock, New York based group called Orleans and got the job and soon after played on his first hit “Still The One”. In 1977 Jerry flew to London and started working with ex-Genesis lead singer Peter Gabriel and can be heard playing on over 10 albums and on songs such as "Red Rain" "Shock the Monkey" "In Your Eyes" and many more . Throughout his career Jerry divided his time between recording and touring with Gabriel and also worked with countless others including Daryl Hall and John Oates, Tears for Fears, Joan Armatrading, Paul McCartney, Sarah McLachlan, John Mayer, The Indigo Girls, Elvis Costello, 10,000 Maniacs, Sheryl Crow and more.

In 1986 Jerry started his own band Island Of Men. He then moved from New York City to Woodstock NY where put together his studio JERSVILLE STUDIOS and began producing recordings for his band and others. His passion as both a musician and producer carry on to this day.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Doug "Cosmo" Clifford is best known as a founding member and drummer for Creedence Clearwater Revival and also currently is in Creedence Clearwater Revisited. Clifford, along with Stu Cook and the Fogerty brothers (John and Tom) grew up in El Cerrito, California.  

CCR's music is a staple of American pop culture and the group has sold nearly 30 million records in the U.S. alone. Their 1976 Greatest Hits album is still on the Billboard 200 album chart and reached the 500-week mark in December of 2020. It has been awarded 10x Platinum and CCR was ranked the 82nd Greatest Artists of all Time by Rolling Stone Magazine. Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and Country Rock pioneer, Chris Hillman was a founding member of the Byrds, the Flying Burrito Brothers, Manassas, the Souther-Hillman-Furay Band, McGuinn-Clark-Hillman and the Desert Rose Band.

In 2017 he released the acclaimed Bidin’ My Time, his first solo album in 12 years, produced by Tom Petty and executive-produced by Herb Pedersen. In 2018, the 50th Anniversary of The Byrds’ groundbreaking Sweetheart of the Rodeo album, which launched the country rock movement in 1968 and is widely considered to be one of the most influential albums in the genre, was celebrated. Jerry Shirley is a legendary English Rock Drummer who is best known as a member of the highly influential rock band Humble Pie, appearing on all of their albums. Jerry was recruited by Steve Marriott to join Humble Pie when he was just 17 years old.

Aside from Humble Pie, Jerry is also known for his work with Fastway, Waysted, Joey Molland from Badfinger, Alexis Korner, Billy Nicholls, John Entwistle (of The Who), Sammy Hagar and more.

Jerry also recorded with Syd Barrett (Pink Floyd). On the debut LP The Madcap Laughs he shared drum duties and played with David Gilmour and Roger Waters among others. On the album Barrett, he worked with Gilmour again and also Richard Wright, and shared the drum stool with Willie Wilson.

Steve got his start as a concert promoter in 1972. Based in Indianapolis he promoted shows independently before joining Sunshine Promotions in 1974. Sunshine grew into one of the biggest concert companies in America, eventually producing more than 7,500 concerts and events in Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, West Virginia, Virginia, Georgia, Mississippi, Nevada, and Puerto Rico. Steve resigned from SFX / Sunshine Promotions in late 2000. After a 2-year sabbatical he moved to Shanghai in 2003 to promote Western artists in China. There he co-founded China West Entertainment and eventually merged China West with Shanghai based A2Live. In 1969 Don co-founded the power trio Grand Funk Railroad whose career sky-rocketed in 1973 behind the #1 hit, “We’re An American Band”, a song Don not only wrote, but sang while playing his historical drums licks. Also, his list of credits are “Shinin’ On” and “Walk Like A Man”. He is also the lead singer on the hit recording “Some Kind of Wonderful”. Grand Funk went on to record 12 Gold and 10 Platinum albums.

In 1983 and 1987, Don was recruited to play on tour with Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band. The 1987 tour proved to be the largest grossing tour of that decade. Don also toured extensively with Seger in 2006, 2007, 2011, and 2012.

The highlights of this outstanding musician’s career cover the gamut, including bongo features on Frank Zappa’s song “Let Me Take You To The Beach”, numerous television appearances with both Seger and Grand Funk, including David Letterman, Jay Leno, and Good Morning America and much more.

He has been a member of major indie pop and punk bands, most notably Guided by Voices (1997-2004 and 2016 to present) helping lead the powerhouse indie rock gods fronted by the incomparable Bob Pollard to new heights, plus also as a member of Nada Surf, and in the past other great bands including Bambi Kino, Death of Samantha, and Cobra Verde and has also recorded with the likes of Neko Case, The Hold Steady, The Easthills and others. Bill Gibson began playing drums at age 7 and got his first drum kit at age 14. Bill joined the band Sound Hole and also played his first tour in 1974 backing up Van Morrison. Eventually, Bill and other members of Sound Hole joined with members of Clover to form Huey Lewis and the News. Since the band's inception Huey Lewis and the News have sold over 30 million albums and had 19 top ten hits including "The Power of Love", "If This Is It", "Heart & Soul", "I Want A New Drug", "Stuck With You", "Hip To Be Square", "The Heart Of Rock N' Roll", "Workin' For A Livin" and more. Their music earned them an Academy Award nomination and countless accolades throughout the years. Rudy Sarzo is a professional recording and worldwide performing artist with a career spanning nearly four decades.

Rudy arrived in Los Angeles in the late 70's and was a member of Quiet Riot. In the early 80's Sarzo followed fellow Quiet Riot bandmate and guitarist Randy Rhoads as a member of Ozzy Osbourne’s band, where Rudy served from March 1981 to September 1982. Rudy toured the world in support of the “Blizzard of Ozz” and “Diary Of a Madman” records. Rudy’s bass playing can be heard on Ozzy’s multimillion selling subsequent live albums from those tours. In 2005, Rudy published the Kindle #1 Best Selling book, Off the Rails: Aboard the Crazy Train in the Blizzard of Ozz.

As a member of again Quiet Riot, from September 1982 to January 1985, Rudy recorded the multi-platinum albums “Metal Health”, the first Heavy Metal debut to reach #1 on the Billboard charts and “Condition Critical”. During this period he headlined worldwide tours, appeared on numerous MTV videos and was voted #1 Bassist in Circus Magazine for 1983. Rudy was also a member of the reunited Quiet Riot, from May 1997 to August 2003.

As a member of Whitesnake, from April 1987 to September 1994, Rudy recorded the multi-platinum album “Slip of the Tongue”. During this period he also performed worldwide on headline tours in support of the multiplatinum “1987” and “Slip of the Tongue” albums and appeared on 6 MTV videos.

His recordings with Ozzy, Quiet Riot and Whitesnake alone combined have sold over 35 million copies worldwide.

Since 2004 Rudy has not slowed down having served as a touring and recording member of multiple bands including Yngwie Malmsteen’s Rising Force, DIO, Blue Oyster Cult, Geoff Tate’s Queensryche and currently is a member of The Guess Who.

Jim McCarty is the legendary leader/drummer/singer/co-founder for The Yardbirds (a band who was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1992), Renaissance and other bands.

Roger Joseph Manning Jr. has enjoyed a long and fruitful career as a touring keyboardist, session player, arranger, and producer. His latest project is the band The Lickerish Quartet.

Roger's arranging career began as early as 1989 when he began arranging string, brass, wind and vocal ensembles for his first band, Jellyfish, which he co-founded. Out of the ashes of Jellyfish arose his second co-founded project, Imperial Drag from 1994-97, which saw overwhelming overseas success, particularly in England and Japan. From 1995-97 he co-founded the all-vintage electronic duo known as The Moog Cookbook. This group was started solely as a means of having a forum to express its love for the bygone era of vintage synthesizers and exotic keyboards. Ultimately it became his calling card for longtime friend and collaborator, Beck Hansen. Roger began his over 20-year and still-active relationship as Beck’s sideman, touring the world and recording critically acclaimed albums. Not to mention work with other artists such as Fun!, Paramore and others.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Nils Lofgren is a virtuoso rock musician, recording artist, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. His resume is absolutely mind blowing as he has recorded and performed with Bruce Springsteen as a member of the E Street Band since 1984, and has also served as a member of Crazy Horse, a member of Ringo Starr's All-Star Band, is the founder/frontman of the band Grin, and has recorded and toured with Neil Young, Lou Reed and others. Groups aside Nils has a vast catalogue of amazing solo work. Most recently Nils has released the album "Weathered". 

The double live album "Weathered" includes reworked classics from Nils' vast catalogue, new live recordings from his 2019 album Blue With Lou, a studio album that features songs co-written with Lou Reed, and a few choice cover renditions. The band on "Weathered" features Nils on vocals, guitars and keyboards, Tom Lofgren on vocals, guitars, keyboards and percussion, Kevin McCormick on bass guitar and vocals, Cindy Mizelle on vocals and percussion, and Andy Newmark on drums and groove.

Bruce Kulick became a guitar hero when he was asked to join KISS in 1984. As their lead guitarist, Kulick was featured in the band from ’84 until ’96, performing around the world in addition to his recordings and videos with the iconic band which during that time included "Tears Are Falling," "Forever," "Crazy, Crazy Nights," "Who Wants To Be Lonely," "Domino," "Unholy," "God Gave Rock and Roll To You," "Reason To Live," "Rise To It" and many more. During those years, he earned multiple Platinum and Gold records and video awards. In addition to his years in KISS, he toured or recorded with Meatloaf, Billy Squier, Michael Bolton, Avantasia, Lordi, UNION, and is featured on many other artists projects. Since 2000, Kulick has been the lead guitarist for Grand Funk Railroad, “The American Band”. The current version of Grand Funk is in its 20th year of touring. In addition to his appearances at guitar shows and clinics, for the past three years Bruce has been a featured performer on the sold-out KISS Kruise.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee Steve Hackett is renowned as an immensely talented and innovative rock musician. He was lead guitarist with Genesis as part of their classic line up that included Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford, who produced six acclaimed studio albums and an EP during Steve's tenure from 1971-1977. 

With Steve's extraordinary versatility in both his electric guitar playing and his composing, he involves influences from many genres, including Jazz, World Music and Blues. He is equally adept in his classical albums that include renditions of pieces the likes of Bach & others, his own acoustic guitar compositions have gained the admiration of many and his ambitious guitar/ orchestra albums such as A Midsummer Night's Dream, recorded with the Royal Philharmonic have done the same.

After Genesis, Steve embarked on his solo career pushing musical boundaries into exciting areas, inventing new sounds and also techniques such as 'tapping'. His solo career went from strength to strength and the mid eighties not only saw the hit single Cell 151, but also the Steve Hackett and Steve Howe supergroup GTR, highly successful in America.

After GTR Steve worked further with many renowned musicians such as Paul Carrick, Bonny Tyler, Chris Squier, John Wetton and Brian May, the latter of who has credited Steve as an early influence. His influence can also be heard through players such as Alex Lifeson, Eddie Van Halen and others.

Steve's solo albums and projects have always possessed a high level of sophistication, along with an ever-present powerful dynamic. Steve's live electric gigs take his fans on an extraordinary journey drawn from a rich musical heritage. Perennial Genesis favorites sit alongside solo classics, while more recent solo material is also included, demonstrating that Steve is an artist still at the very top of his game who is always looking and moving forward.

Hackett's January 2021 release, also discussed on this episode, is Under A Mediterranean Sky.
