Episode 42: Tumbling into Sith Butthole

This week, Cate and Dietrich conduct a bold experiment to see what might happen if one of them braves traffic and the Blue Ridge Mountains for the chance to record together in person! And what better way to commemorate this special occasion than to watch the completely uncontroversial film The Last Jedi and talk for way too long about it. The pair discuss Mark Hamill's new character "Old Prospector Mad at the Gummint", reflect on Poe exhibiting some strong "all men need therapy" energy, and confirm that no one in this galaxy is more put upon than those poor fish nuns. It's a discussion so long that they had to split it into two episodes, because apparently face to face these nerds just have way too much fun.

Episode 41: Mucking Donofrio Droppings

This week, Cate and Dietrich dig into an episode that finds the two locked in a terrible debate: Would Kira Nerys be more into Sleep Token or Tupac? After failing to settle that age-old question, they dig into the excellent Clone Wars episode Innocents of Ryloth, touching on Vincent Donofrio's uncredited guest appearance, the importance of completing your Twilek Duolingo lessons before a massive invasion, and why the Jedi Basketball League was dead on arrival. It's an episode that touches on clone babysitting skills combined with a child so adorable that she put this entire podcast on the edge of a cliff, and one that rocketed close to the top of Dietrich's rankings.

Episode 40: DS9 Season 1 Recapstraviganza!

This week, Cate and Dietrich sit down to look back at the first season of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, ranking their favorite episodes, coming to universal agreement on which episode was without question the worst and which episode was undoubtedly the best, and the moments that made this one of the more surprisingly strong first seasons of sci-fi television ever made. In addition, Cate takes a swing at prognostication, forecasting what she believes lies ahead for Sisko, Kira, and the rest of the Wormhole Squad.

Episode 39: Gotta Watch Your Caboodle

This week, Cate and Dietrich tackle the season one finale of Deep Space Nine, an episode that introduces the iconic Vedek Winn (if by iconic you mean brilliantly acted and deeply, deeply infuriating). It's an episode that asks the big questions, such as:

Is there anyone more punk rock on this station than Keiko O'Brien (no)

Is Sisko getting paid enough to deal with both last week's and this week's headaches (also no)

Was O'Brien more upset than someone digging through his caboodle than he was an ensign getting blended (yes, to an unsettling degree)

It's an episode that deals with some extremely heavy subject matter, but don't worry, there's still plenty of time for Odo and Quark to almost kiss. You can send questions or comments to maytheforcelivelongandpodcast@gmail.com.

Episode 38: The Pot Calling Ashoka Insubordinate

This week, Cate and Dietrich dig into Storm over Ryloth, in which a fourteen-year-old girl is given a perfectly reasonable level of responsibility that doesn't at all set her up for absolutely devastating trauma. Dietrich and Cate discuss the power of a good pair of sunglasses, demand that Officer Downer learn a fun trick and shut the f*&k up, and discuss how Anakin could hunt for a hundred years without finding a single leg to stand on in this episode.

Episode 37: Lie Turducken

This week, Cate and Dietrich are joined by Taylor Vaughan, who brings her unique brand of comedic flair to an episode about... checking our notes... war crimes and the ghosts that haunt us. That's right, this week we're tackling the iconic episode "Duet", in which we celebrate the return of Cardassian ketchup, marvel at how deeply Dukat respects HIPPA, and learn about the Tumblr legend of the Star Trek Twink. In addition, they lament the premature death of a hilarious bit about a traumatized witness, Cate introduces Taylor to Tank Top Kira, and they wonder just what Odo had to do to get access to his boyfriend's "private stock".

Episode 36: Dump Trucks and Mad Scientists 2 - Electric Bugaloo

This week, Cate and Dietrich cheerfully throw a hand grenade in the careful routine they've built by doing two Clone Wars episodes in a row. But they had no choice, given that Mystery of the Thousand Moons is such a critical cliffhanger that... uh, wait. Why were these released as one episode? Cate and Dietrich never come up with a satisfying answer, but they do discuss Obi Wan and Anakin's adventures on Planet Wildly Convenient, the tragic death of a character definitely not named for the Mexican food the writer's room ordered for lunch, and the introduction of angels to the Star Wars canon in such a way that's definitely not going to be forgotten and never brought up again. It's a baffling episode that ends with the suggestion that JarJar be start packing a nine, which is enough to leave everyone terrified for their life.

Episode 35: Dump Trucks and Mad Scientists

This week, Cate and Dietrich take a page from Star Wars: The Clone Wars and drop the first half of a two part episode, breaking down the episode Blue Shadow Virus. Dietrich reluctantly admits to this being a JarJar episode he doesn't hate, Cate reflects on the legacy of George Lucas sending the word "poo doo" to ripple through generations of face palming writers, and oh yeah, Ozempic Gru gleefully engineers an airborne pathogen by tazing it over and over again. In addition, Dietrich rages over a missed portmanteau opportunity, the pair discuss how far Ashoka's come that Obi Wan trusts her to defeat droids and refrain from rolling her eyes at Anakin and Padme, and the two most gifted Jedi in the galaxy forget they can move shit with their brains.

Episode 34: Ferengi Insurance Fraud

This week, Cate and Dietrich spend a chaotic hour desperately trying to determine the answer to life's oldest question: Is Dramatis Personae a good episode or is it terrible? During their investigation into this pile of shenanigans, they discuss the unsettling implications of Klingons who prefer missionary position, Quark attempts insurance fraud, and Odo confirms that Bashir is very much the dumbest person on the station. In addition, Cate gets very invested in the deep canonical lore of a clock, they attempt to dig their way out from the absolute wheelbarrow full of shenanigans, and Cate gets burgled while recording this episode. It's a chaotic recording about a truly bizarre episode, but it might be some of the most fun we've had yet.

Episode 33: High Pulp Cornbread

This week, Cate and Dietrich brace themselves for DS9's very first Lwaxana Troi episode, only to be a bit shocked when it's... kinda great? They discuss payback for the Dax 2.0 incident, the difficulty of editing out the HBO logo in your timely Cardassian attacks, and the challenges of navigating an O'Brien temper tantrum. It's a packed episode, with schadenfreude picnic baskets, HR begging an ambassador to stop trying to bone down with the goo cop, and the fact that we totally love pylons, like FOR REAL.

Episode 32: Tinker Tailor Jedi Spy

This week, Dietrich and Cate dig into the stellar Hidden Enemy, which might be about the Jedi hunting down a brave abolitionist but maybe don't think too much about it. It's an episode that reveals Dietrich's deep abiding love for spy thrillers, figures out where the "Vietnam War in Space" line actually is and waves cheerfully as this episode whizzes past said line, and gives Obi Wan and Ventress a chance to really showcase the white hot passion they've been barely holding at bay. Cate and Dietrich discuss Anakin and Obi Wan bullying the OpSec nerd, the joys of a casual decapitation, and how badly the Star Wars universe needs a Benoit Blanc to stroll in and drawl out some revelations. They also discuss Toy Story 5, Hoppers, and the XTEInk 4 e-reader.

Episode 31: Dumpy and the Baseball Player

This week, Cate and Dietrich dig into the bottom of the barrel for season one with the bafflingly named If Wishes were Horses. It's an episode that manages to include creepy fantasies come to life, a quick glimpse at the dark side of Kira's emotional state, a snowstorm in the Promenade, and still impressively manages to not be entertaining. Cate and Dietrich do find time to ask the important questions, such as:

Are Odo and Quark into brat-play?

Why don't we ever see the lingerie models and the ostriches in the same room together?

What is the ghoulishly horrifying turndown policy for the holosuites?

 And more!

It's an episode that manages to end with all the subtlety and nuance of a theater full of bored theater dads gamely clapping to bring Tinkerbell back to life, but we had a blast talking about it. You can send questions or comments to maytheforcelivelongandpodcast@gmail.com

Episode 30: General Grevious Birthday Surprise

This week, Cate and Dietrich discuss the episode "Trespass", in which some already creepy toys from the late 80s get exponentially more terrifying when a racist moron opens his mouth. The pair discuss Anakin's dedication to his night school art classes, Obi-Wan's unfortunate boomer tendencies when he doesn't speak the local language, and the frustration the pair feel at constantly being denied Quiznos. In addition, we meet a Padme-worshipping tween who needs some serious conflict resolution training, an entitled white man with power and a serious need of a filter, and some clones who definitely don't get paid enough for this crap. It's the rare episode that could have been dramatically improved by the inclusion of an org chart, and you can send your questions or comments to maytheforcelivelongandpodcast@gmail.com.

This week, Cate and Dietrich discuss the sugar of a B-story that helps one hell of a heavy A-story go down, and Jake and Nog shoulder the nigh-on impossible task of keeping an episode about the scars left by the brutal subjugation of the people forcing everyone to dirty their hands light and fun. Fortunately, the Noh-Jay Consortium is up to the task. Cate and Dietrich talk about the gleeful joy of stubborn octogenarians, Cate's ability to manifest a befuddled O'Brien, and the surprisingly effective protest tactic of a slow-cooker meal. In addition, they chat about tween landowners, the desperate need for more girl talk on this show, and Bashir learns to be cool for like A SECOND.

Episode 27: Unfortunately, Back to Bajor

This week, Dietrich and Cate dig into the Deep Space Nine episode "The Storyteller" to try to find a shred of common sense and generally come up empty. Does it make sense why a teenage girl is threatening war because of a wobbly river? Does it make sense why a goo cloud menacing an entire village of day players hasn't gotten more attention? Does it make sense why Tony Robbins is the only hope for a village with the worst conflict resolution techniques in history? No, but it's a lot of fun to talk about. The pair discuss gangly teenage love triangles, the dangers of community theater against medical advice, and just how lucky the Bajorans are that Julian didn't get the weird bride offer.

Episode 26: Sam The Eagle Night Terrors

This week, Cate and Dietrich dig into Jedi Crash, an absolutely breakneck whirlwind of an episode that sees more happen in the first three minutes than most episodes see in their full run. We settle the landmark case of Anakin V Massive Wall of Fire, debate whether the writers or animators consumed more nose candy during the production, and discuss just how lean Sam The Eagle's roasted flesh would be. In addition, a muppet beatnik lectures the Jedi on hypocrisy, the Chosen One learns that moxie and pluck are no match for extensive internal bleeding, and we learn the restorative powers of goo-based waterboarding.

May The 4th Bonus: Peyote-Fueled F*ck Wagon

To celebrate May The 4th, Cate and Dietrich dive into the 2009 film Fanboys, a movie that answers the question, "How uncomfortable do two nerds feel discussing a movie that's aged like cream in a sauna?" They spend time discussing Danny Trejo's beautiful smile, the many layers of the greatest van ever built, and the shockingly poor security at Skywalker Ranch. It's a complicated movie to talk about, bouncing between painfully awkward portrayals of the Star Trek / Star Wars rivalry, a plot that pingpongs wildly between too much subtext and not a single solitary drop, and several scenes that need to be dragged out into the desert and told to look at the stars while we do what has to be done. But it's also something of a miracle, a love letter that's pointed less at Star Wars and more at the joy, friendship, and devotion that this universe has inspired. We hope you all enjoy this monster-length bonus, and that you all have a happy May the 4th!

Episode 25: Zombie Popes and Guilt Stares

This week, Cate and Dietrich sit down to discuss the season one episode "Battle Lines", in which we learn that Benjamin Sisko's one weakness is Catholic guilt. The pair chat about Kira's questionable stress management techniques, Keiko possibly throwing down with Quark to prevent Molly from entering the cutthroat world of estate auctions, and the fact that Dax and O'Brien are so goddamn good at solving problems that it might become narratively annoying. It's an episode that dips into some complicated ideas, including how we embrace or reject the violence that's a part of who we are, the philosophical horror of immortality and war, and just how many ways is Odo going to get yelled at by some alien priests.

Episode 24: JamTalk with Cate and Deety

This week, Dietrich reluctantly sits down with Cate to discuss the latest adventures of nobody's favorite Gungan with Gungan Generals. They establish in no uncertain terms which current US policymaker fills the role of Jar Jar of the Senate, they dig deep into the proper jam choices and the unholy plasmid that is sunbutter, and they lament the decision made not to simply incorporate this legendary scene into the episode. In addition, they discuss the decision not to focus on the complexities of the Obi Wan / Dooku relationship, the ability of cowpigs to keep up with space Harleys, and whether or not Jar Jar is guilty of manslaughter (he absolutely is).

Episode 23: We Don't Negotiate With Weirdos

This week, Cate and Dietrich sit down to talk about The Vortex, an episode that argues that Odo's cousin can be found at any Claire's near you, debates whether murder is forgivable if the murder victim was just kind of a dick, and demonstrates once again that Quark pines helplessly for Odo's love. It's an episode that struggles with a tone vacillating wildly between "goofy crime caper" and "remember that time my family was murdered", and features some truly baffling decision making by Sisko, who takes prisoner transport way to lightly. Can an antagonist still be threatening while wearing a silver diaper? Are Bashir's parents dodging his calls begging them to help him find his dress uniform? Find out in this week's episode of May the Force Live Long and Prosper!

Episode 22: Side Seat Jedi

This week, Cate and Dietrich dig into the episode Dooku Captured, which for some goddamn reason kicks off about halfway through a really cool story we never get to see. We reunite with the galaxy's favorite bickering married couple back together again, we learn that Dooku has so much drip it's genuinely intimidating, and we meet the most bafflingly competent pirates in the galaxy. In addition, Dietrich gets quite angry at the reveal of Cricket prepaid lightsabers, we get some wet hot man-on-manbat action, and they cackle more than they probably should at a Jawa absolutely getting his shit rocked by a pirate. It's an incomplete episode with some pretty amazing sections that jump-scares you with a cliffhanger.

Episode 21 : Ferengi Refractory Period

This week, Dietrich finally gets his vengeance for the gnarled sexual awakening of Itchy by introducing the supernatural refractory period of an octogenarian Ferengi head of state. Cate looks on in existential horror as the pair debate the need for soundproofing the holosuites, the practicality of door to door autopsies, and whether or not Paramount is missing a tremendous opportunity by not selling dessicated corpse blind boxes. In addition, the A and B plots are so far apart they can't see each other without a telescope, Sisko gets parenting advice from every person to hove into his field of vision, and our greatest achievement is realized when Jake Sisko no longer is sleeping on the floor.

This week, Cate and Dietrich discover the dreamboat of the Star Wars universe with Dietrich's future husband, Kit Fisto, who definitely will never have anything bad happen to him. Ever. We learn that battle droids are as good at improv as they are bad at battle, that Grevious somehow selected the sassiest of mechadoctors, and what the fearsome Jedi killer's non-negotiables were on his HGTV appearance. In addition, Wish.com Anakin learns why only the chosen one should flirt with vengeance, Dave Filoni plays coy about mutilation motivation, and Grevious proves not ready for the responsibility of pet ownership.

Episode 19: Tricorder Security Blanket (featuring Taylor Vaughan)

This week, Cate promptly invokes the new Taylor Rule, and the pair are joined by author Taylor Vaughan to discuss the fever dream acid trip that is Move Along Home. Cate shares the insanity of this episode unraveling with our guest, including the unsettling implication of Wadi fuck sticks, the hanging thread of Jake learning about the birds and the bees, and Bashir introducing the revolutionary tactic of screaming yourself awake. In addition, the trio discuss whether Dietrich actually NEEDS both ears, prospecting parties for children, and mourn the final appearance of Cate's favorite character. Nerd Primman, you will be missed.

Episode 17: Can't Trust the Good Hair

This week, Cate and Dietrich brave the second part of the Nute Gunray trilogy, an episode blessedly free from any Gungan interference. They talk about the importance of focusing on an emergency's location prior to dunking on someone, whether the Republic has a police brutality problem, and more. In addition, Cate builds a lightsaber, Dietrich tempts fate and bears in one weekend, and they calmly discuss the aerospace engineering choices of a flared base on a boarding ship.

Episode 16: Bart Simpson Starship Stratagems

This week, Cate and Dietrich sit down to chat about the masterclass in bad acting put on in The Passenger. Should Kira Nerys get a combat medal for not punting Julian straight out of an airlock? Did Starfleet send extra security because apparently these idiots are handing out clearances to every ham and egger that hoves into their field of view? Why was Dax so thrilled to see a petrie dish murder happen right in front of her? In addition, Cate cyberbullies a white bread nerd who annoys his way through the crew, we bid a fond farewell to Deep Space Nine's biggest stew influencer, and Alexander Siddig makes... some CHOICES when it comes to his performance.

My Onoconda Don't Want None

This week, Cate is absolutely delighted to discuss Bombad Jedi, and when Cate's delighted, Dietrich should be very, very worried. The pair sit down to chat about the Jar Jar Binks of it all, including Filoni absolutely going ham with his love of giant sea creatures, the sheer exhaustion that must be felt by the Gungan's guardian angel, and the two dozen times this episode should have come to a swift and bloody end. In addition, they attempt to rebuild this episode into something that's not a complete mess, a clone trooper tries to bring home the most impractical of pets, and we discuss that the only thing Palpatine hates more than the Jedi is Jar Jar Binks. Finally, we wrap up with a chat about the newest series in the Game of Thrones universe and a new Mumford and Sons album.

Centenarian Rager

This week, Cate and Dietrich dig into Deep Space Nine's first adventure in the courtroom, as Sisko, Kira, and the best guest star ever break out weapons-grade sass as they try to determine if Curzon Dax being a bit of a man-whore can justify Jadzia Dax being executed. The pair discuss Bashir crossing the line into a possible sexual harassment case, Sisko and Odo getting to wield the ferocious sword of MINOR ADMINISTRATIVE DETAILS, and spend the bulk of the episode swooning over Queen Anne Haney and her delightful round gavel. In addition, everyone panics when O'Brien goes on vacation, a surprise witness spills gallons of piping hot tea, and we announce our new partnership with Poderation!

This week, Cate and Dietrich ask the hard hitting questions, including: Can industrial grade steel shelving units withstand the scope of Cate's Star Wars apparel? How WOULD Dietrich properly wine and dine Anakin Skywalker should The Chosen One agree to be his Valentine? Does going barefoot on a ship cross a line that even Grevious refuses to cross? And most importantly, can Duel of the Droids redeem the previous episode? In addition, they discuss Ashoka's skydiving face, this franchise's deep adoration of tazers, and so much more. Cate and Dietrich discuss whether or not you need to let Odo's tannins breathe and the practicality of an Odo decanter, how many times Jean-Luc's name is uttered in the span of a single episode, and wonder if Bashir's absenteeism is becoming a problem that no one realizes when he's been space roofied for a full day. In addition, Cate braves the nightmarish labyrinth that is Costco before a Super Bowl, Dietrich fat shames his new mechanical son, and they wrap up debating favorite muppets and a moving tribute.
This week, Cate and Dietrich dig into the baffling Downfall of a Droid, at least once they're done digging into the arcane mysteries of whether or not Count Dooku is subtle when he rips some fat clouds of cotton. The pair discuss some strange child bride vibes, the joy of seeing Grevious love his work, and debate the wisdom of putting a tween in command of a naval armada. In addition, Cate does a fairly poor job of hiding her delight at Dietrich's bitter enmity towards a certain gilded traitor.
Episode 10: Don't Call Me Barkeep

This week, Cate and Dietrich discuss Deep Space Nine's take on The Most Dangerous Game, at least if a day player on Flash Gordon was chasing a very leathery Groot. They talk about Sisko's wildly relaxed approach to first contact, Bashir's wildly relaxed approach to HIPPA, and pretty much everyone's wildly relaxed approach to the station being boarded by aliens as hostile as they are goofy. Cate rails about an unresolved cold open that's aged like cream on an Arizona tin roof, Dietrich is delighted by Odo installing a Net Nanny on all of Quark's computers, and they both spend time screaming at O'Brien to go see his wife and kid, dammit.
Episode 9: They Make Sounds When You Smush 'em Together

This week, Cate and Dietrich sit down to discuss the episode of Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Rookies, an episode that features Dietrich's new favorite character, shines a light on Dave Filoni's weird kink for space fish, and sees Cate quietly watching Dietrich spiral into madness at the idea of suicidal sentient propane tanks. In addition, they share some of the more unhinged merchandise that's ever been ejected into the world, including a coffin for the recently deceased Trekkie in your life, a ghoulish body horror lollipop, and the opportunity to contort a very professional Leia in all directions.
Episode 8: O'Brien's No Good Very Bad Day

This week, Cate and Dietrich discuss an episode in which we discover just how bad the staffing issues on DS9 actually are, too many people get a bit too thirsty about a bioterrorist, and Jake finally, FINALLY gets a goddamn bed. In addition, Cate continues to lie to Dietrich about running, argues for a Ferengi/Shapeshifter buddy cop movie, and gets blinded by the not book that Dietrich's mother got him for the holidays.
Episode 7: Three Stooges Funny

This week, Cate and Dietrich wrap up the Malevolence trilogy with an episode that had Dietrich laughing so hard he injured himself. How much is too much for aspirational tequila? Is anyone going to talk to the super battle droids about the dangers of steroid abuse? Do droids have a concept of mortality? The pair discuss this and more, but mostly just laugh about Obi-Wan abracadabring C3PO into a goddamn train. You can send questions or comments to maytheforcelivelongandprosper@gmail.com

Happy Life Day 2025: Justice for Lumpy

Happy Life Day, everyone! We brought you an acid trip to absolutely fracture any sense of sanity that you may have! For MTFLLAP's very first Christmas episode, we're joined by author Taylor Vaughan as Dietrich recounts the absolute fever dream that was the 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special, complete with Wookie refractory periods, a cocaine-fueled Roger Corman in multilimbed drag screaming at the screen, and Luke Skywalker telling a woman how much prettier she'd be if she smiled, all while Cate cackles with demented glee like some kind of holiday gremlin. It's an episode fueled by Dietrich's confusion and despair, so, you know, a perfect way to spend your Christmas. You can send questions or comments to maytheforcelivelongandprosper@gmail.com.

Episode 6: Lunchable Sommmelier

Does this episode start with nearly ten minutes of conversation about Uncrustables and Lunchables before these two idiots even get to the main topic? Who's to say? But following that very important discourse, Cate and Dietrich dive deep into a murder mystery surrounding everyone's favorite bucket boy. Should you finish your lunch if you develop the most colorful case of eczema in history? Is Bashir careening wildly towards a very uncomfortable conversation with HR? Does it actually impact the quality of an episode to jam every goddamn thing you can think of in a single hour? Find out this and more as Dietrich and Cate discuss holodeck happy endings, science blobs, and angry mobs. Email us your questions and comments at maytheforcelivelongandpodcast@gmail.com

Episode 5: The Caviar of War Crimes

This week, Cate and Dietrich break down the Star Wars: The Clone Wars episode Shadow of Malevolence, in which Anakin learns the value of pre-mission briefings, Cate rejects Dietrich's theory that Grevious and Krang are the same person, and Plo Koon really doesn't do well at his quarterly performance review. In addition, we discuss the General Grevious strategy for visiting Disney world, Dietrich requests a Jedi org chart, and they reluctantly admit that Anakin Skywalker might be SLIGHTLY better than a drunken tugboat captain.
