Judo Chop Suey Ep. 8 - BJJ's Popularity in the United States and Judo's Decline

In this episode of the Judo Chop Suey podcast Dave Roman talks about why he thinks Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is more popular in the United States among adults than Judo. Dave also talks about what he believes are some of the negative perceptions about Judo and why this is hurting adult memberships. Some of what Dave Roman perceives to be sacred cows in Judo are discussed. Recreational Judo in the United States (9:53). It's not a bad thing! It's a good thing! Judo is a great recreational activity first and foremost (11:57). Judo's focus on tournaments and competition will harm it's growth among new adults (15:40). Jundo Seisho (16:17). Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is succeeding where Judo is failing among adults (21:57). Brazilian Jiu Jitsu initially became popular because of the UFC over 20 years ago (28:00). Most practitioners have no aspirations to be an MMA fighter or compete at the highest level in BJJ. They are mostly recreational and they are mostly adults (32:09). When I see a BJJ student I see a Judoka (34:36). I've never known a BJJ student try Judo and stick with it but almost all of my former training partners tried BJJ and never came back to Judo (39:12). Brazilian Jiu Jitsu clubs are filled with adults, even older adults (42:57). Judo has a perception problem in the United States (48:55) Some of the sacred cows in Judo are talked about.
