Growing up on a farm on the outskirts of Sydney, Australia Louise Azzopardi found her love for working with her hands early. By the age of 15, she had left school and was working full-time as a mechanic. During that time she attended an Apprenticeship Expo where she met a woman who was a Heavy Vehicle Mechanic. Inspired, she applied for and got a similar position. Unfortunately, her dream of working in the male-dominated world of heavy vehicle mechanics soured as she was lectured and bullied extensively. She witnessed the bullying of the women who were told they got their job to fill a quota and were relegated to menial tasks. Louise was told she can’t do her job effectively due to her gender. Initially, she used these incidents to motivate her. It was then she experienced a phenomenon she calls “high functioning anxiety”. She defines this phenomenon as trying to outrun anxiety by working constantly, motivated by the fear that you may not be good enough, a fear enforced by detractors and bullies.

After experiencing the rollercoaster of being a woman in a male-dominated trade and feeling like no one understood what she was going through she wanted to make sure no one else felt that way. Louise started training in 2018 as a volunteer for SALT (Supporting and Linking Tradeswomen) which is where her love of training started. She is now a qualified life coach and supports tradeswomen on their journey to overcome self-doubt and be confident in everything they do! Asia Fee is a chemist, the founder of Alchemist Asia cosmetics, a self-described “Remote Chemist”, and a Princess in Reinvented Magazine’s Princesses with Powertools 2023 calendar. Today Asia is our very special guest on the Hazard Girls podcast.

Growing up in a small town, Asia had a passion for science but didn’t have a lot of women role models in the STEM field. If you were in STEM, particularly if you were a woman, you were a teacher or you worked in a lab. While still in high school, she discovered he passion for chemistry through of all things, makeup. She couldn’t find the exact colors she wanted so like any good scientist she hit the books, did her research, and formulated her very own lipstick in the exact custom colors she wanted. A chemist was born.

After high school graduation Asia majored in chemistry at a local college. She was disappointed to learn that not only were there very few women studying chemistry, everyone, male or female, was doing so to fill a medical school requirement. There was no real STEM community. It wasn’t until she transferred to California State University Channel Islands that she realized how big and diverse the field of chemistry really is. It was at California State University Channel Islands that the opportunity to intern as an undergrad at Parker Hannifin came up, where she ultimately became a Lab Technician as a grad student.

When the pandemic hit and all of her roommates were forced to move back home, Asia made the decision to move to Alaska with her partner. Working from home in Alaska home spawned her moniker “The Remote Chemist"

Asia started Alchemist Asia cosmetics while working for Parker Hannifin. She used what little free time she had formulating cosmetics as a way to keep in touch with her passion for chemistry and cosmetics. This rekindled her love for making cosmetics. It was primarily a hobby until, while making a batch of lip gloss, she made way too much. She offered the extra product to friends on social media and the response was overwhelming, turning Alchemist Asia into a real cosmetics manufacturer.

Today Alchemist Asia offers a full line of science-inspired beauty products named after scientific phenomena such as Test Tube Lip Gloss, Bioluminescence Oil (inspired by bioluminescent plankton), and cell soap which are scientifically accurate models of animal cells.

Growing up in a small community in India, Ayesha Iftiqhar saw most of the women in her family getting married and starting a family. When Ayesha read about Kalpana Chawla, an Indian-born American astronaut and mechanical engineer and the first woman of Indian origin to go to space, she said to herself “I can do that”. Seeing someone with whom she could identify reaching such amazing heights lit a fire within Ayesha. As astronaut Sally Ride said, “If you can see it you can be it.”

At the age of 20, she left India for the first time to pursue her Master's degree in electrical engineering from the University of North Carolina in Charlotte. After graduation she went to work in the engineering field, working on a variety of projects including developing battery systems to replace gas engines in power tools and more. A big part of Ayesha’s work is Ethical Engineering, which focuses on reducing the environmental impact of the projects she works on.

When Ayesha found herself doubting her abilities, also known as Imposter Syndrome, she started working on personal engineering projects outside of her regular job. One of these projects was attaching LED lights to a cloth mask equipped with a proximity sensor. The mask would display a smile if individuals nearby were within 6 feet or a frown in they were less than 6 feet away.

On this episode of Hazard Girls, we welcome Dr. Hannah Shows, Artificial Intelligence Specialist at Haynes Beffel & Wolfeld LLP. When Dr. Shows was in tenth grade, her geometry teacher told her he would be placing her in a remedial math class “as a favor to her” because she would never use math in her future, he unknowingly set her on a course that changed her life. When she arrived at college she opted to take the more difficult of the available math classes to prove to herself she could do it. It was in that class that she found her love for math and math education thanks to a more accessible, open, and diverse teaching style. Since then she's never looked back.

During her Ph.D. studies, Dr. Shows was working as a programmer. It was there she realized one of the things she loved about the work she was doing was the communication aspect. Her work required her to facilitate collaboration between multiple technical and clinical departments. Overcoming the significant communication barriers between departments is where Dr. Shows found her passion for communication combined with mathematics and engineering.

Outside of her role at the law firm, she helps bridge similar, highly technical communication gaps. Her social media, particularly Instagram, serves as a science communication platform where she helps people overcome the fear and loathing that often comes with math. Her goal is to create a community and foster communication in the interest of changing the landscape of STEM education while growing inclusivity in an often gendered space.

During their discussion, Dr. Shows and Emily touch on unlearning gender code-switching, keeping your femininity when entering traditionally male-dominated fields, strategic gender-typing in the workplace as a norm enforcement mechanism, and strategies for converting bystanders into allies.

Jen is the founder of Glass Elevator, an international skill-sharing, networking, and jobs resource for professional women in film and television. The organization has over 4000 members and has been featured in Forbes as well as named Best in LA by LA weekly. In our conversation, Jen shares how she originally trained as an actor because she was good at it and enjoyed it, but realized that she didn’t find the working life of an actor fulfilling and decided to pursue directing in order to have a more active career. She worked her way up by starting out in production roles that are generally more open to women. Jen reflects on how it was only once she actively started pursuing directing that she realized she had never worked with a female cinematographer, sound engineer, or first assistant director in her working life. This business was founded to create workwear that empowers women across many industries, making the apparel a tool of its own. The founders say they made their startup funds from pre-sales with friends and family as well as continuing research into solving problems for female workers in jobs like farming or construction, and the quality of their products is helping make women, and in part their communities, thrive.

She was formerly appointed to Minnesota’s Agency board, was past coordinator of Common Ground agriculture advocacy group, and has also spent time serving on the boards of Minnesota Agriculture in the Classroom, Minnesota Soybean Growers, and Northern Crops Institute Council. Our second guest today is Alisha Nord Donnelly, who is a fifth-generation farmer from Wolverton, Minnesota. Alisha currently resides in North Dakota where she works for the North Dakota Farm Bureau as their Southeast Field Representative, spends many hours on the road visiting with farmers and ranchers, and learns about the different policy issues within the state. Today’s guests are four women who make up an all-female geologist crew in Montana in the United States, in one of the world’s largest platinum mines. The mine they work in is part of a leading international precious metals mining company with a diverse portfolio of platinum group metal operations, known as PGM in the United States and Southern Africa, Gold Operations and Projects in South Africa, and Copper, Gold, and PGM Exploration Properties in North and South America. It is the world’s largest primary producer of platinum and rhodium, the second largest primary producer of palladium, and a top tier gold producer. The geologists on today’s episode are Jessica Scanlan, Rachel Toler, Alicia Randall, and Christa Loucks. All four are grade control geologists, which means they work underground everyday, directly with miners. Their job is to determine the grade of the rock they’re seeing, and determine whether it is ore or waste. Although women are contributing to the transformation of public transport, they frequently remain less visible and their role in making transit safer, more inclusive, and sustainable is not always acknowledged. Today’s guest is Inessa M. Vitko, the Chief Operations Officer of CTRAN in Vancouver, Washington. Inessa leads C-TRAN’s largest department, which includes all fixed-route and paratransit operators, plus dispatchers, field supervisors, customer service representatives, and other employees. She has spent more than a decade in the transit industry, and her previous experience includes work in budgeting and grants, operations, and customer communications. For the better part of 2020, Inessa has been primarily concerned with navigating her team through the pandemic and readying them for C-TRAN’s second BRT (Bus Rapid Transit Line), major technology upgrades, and internal restructuring. In her 14 years in the industry, one of the things that Inessa is most proud of has been the strong relationships she has built with the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 757, which allows them to make changes collaboratively, including protecting jobs through the current crisis. In this episode, Inessa shares what a typical day as a COO looks like, why she chose the transit industry, and how being a woman in the transit industry has affected her. We then have to sometimes alter our own behavior based on how we think someone else is going to respond. Our guest today is Richelle Moreno, a single mother of two, a business owner, Latina-female, and runaway who has overcome many gender-based obstacles as she climbed her way to the top of her industry and field. Richelle is the owner and manager of two sister companies in the Chicago area; BRT Electric, which handles residential, commercial, and industrial electrical work, and Axiom Contractors, which is a general construction company. She was recently featured in Negocios Now, in the Latino’s in Business Section of the Spanish newspaper from the Chicago area, for her work on her companies and her role as one the few Latino women owning and operating her own electrical and contracting companies. She values education and continues to expand her knowledge in her field while leading in a way that helps and encourages her employees. Our guest today is Deila Ray. Deila is a certified combo-coded vessel welder. Over the past six years, Deila has traveled the US with her husband and her three Dachshunds, fabricating and building piping systems for compressor stations, refineries, water-treatment facilities, and waste-water treatment facilities. Deila has honed her skills as a tradeswoman, getting her certifications in Gas Tungsten Arc Welding and Shielded Metal Arc Welding. She is also the recipient of the 2020 Tradeswoman of the Year Award. Aside from everything that has happened over 2020, Deila and her husband decided to become business owners themselves. Deila is the co-founder of the company she and her husband own called Alpha Duo — a pipe welding company. They do metal fabrication, coded vessel welding, metal art, woodwork, leatherwork, and more! Chloe became a STEM influencer on social media in order to break the persistent stereotypes of women in STEM, and to show that you do not have to be put in a societal box to succeed. She has been sailing with the Maritime Engineers Beneficial Association since she graduated from SUNY Maritime College in 2004, where she earned a Third Assistant Engineer License, as well as a Bachelor’s Degree of Engineering, Mechanical. Sailing off the board, with the union, has allowed Serena the opportunity to work on multiple types of vessels and she is currently a port engineer working ashore in Long Beach, California. Today on the show we welcome Skyler Mapes, a native of Oakland, California. Skyler is the co-founder of EXAU Olive Oil, which she founded in 2017 alongside her husband, Giuseppe. Prior to starting out in the olive oil business, Skyler worked in both the design and wine industries. She became interested in olive oil after meeting Giuseppe and learning about olive trees. In 2017 she made the move to Calabria in Italy to learn all she could about the olive oil industry where she harvested, pressed, and bottled EXAU olive oil, designed the packaging, and exported it to the US to sell directly to their customers. EXAU has been recognized for producing one of the world’s best olive oils, and recently started an olive oil membership. Skyler is dedicated to educating the public about high quality olive oil and the fair representation for women of color in the industry. To this day, she's never met another black female olive oil producer. During our conversation we also discuss our connection to our food, being a woman in the olive oil industry in the US versus in Italy, and what it’s really like to work with a significant other. Along with this, she is the Founder of the Women Architects Collective, an online community dedicated to supporting and encouraging women architects. In this episode, we learn about Joann’s journey to becoming an architect, which started with her moving to the US at just 16. We then turn our attention to what it means to be a 'woman architect.' While Joann used to want to just be called an 'architect,' she recognizes the importance of creating spaces where younger women are inspired by those ahead of them. From there, we talk about some of the challenges that women in architecture face at job sites and in the role generally.
