Dissecting Sergio Perez’s weekend. The Red Bull driver has been under pressure of late, and an incident a matter of minutes into FP1, coupled with another lacklustre qualifying – even if he did make it to Q3 – won’t have helped things. Cosworth TJ V10 stats:

• Max power = 900 bhp, which equates to 300 hp/litre – the DFV only created 140 hp/litre when it first ran.
• Max speed = 19,000 rpm, which means that the piston moves up and down 300 times per second, which is 30 times in the blink of an eye.
• At this speed the piston goes from zero to over 60 mph and back to zero in a distance of just 44 mm, with only the two big end bolts stopping it from escaping.
• To keep the piston in the engine, the con rod bolts have to withstand a 3,000 kg load, which is more than the weight of a Range Rover, and the bolt thread is only 9mm.

The row over Andretti’s F1 entry continues to rumble on. FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has now thrown his support behind the bid in a public intervention. 

Andretti’s bid to enter F1 has been met with pessimism by the teams for the last two seasons. Owner Michael Andretti has taken a new approach to turn the tide of opinion. After the FIA announced it would investigate new teams to join F1, Andretti announced its intentions to tie up with General Motors and Cadillac to enhance its chances.

No public concerns were raised by F1 at the announcement, however, President Ben Sulayems’s recent tweet condemning supposed negative reaction indicates F1 is still wary of Andretti’s entry. The FIA President has become the most vocal support for Andretti as it chases a place on the grid.

Speaking during a press conference at the Dakar Rally, Autosport quotes the FIA president as stating that new team entries form part of the “sustainability of the sport”. He added that up to 12 teams can be on the grid in the future: “Today there are two sides of sustainability. There is sustainability of the environment, and there is sustainability of the sport. Jan's career started in 1995 as McLaren test driver, before debuting later that year. Moving to Stewart Grand Prix for 1997, Jan remained with the team until midway through 1998.

We ask Jan about attending the launch of the ill-fated 1995 McLaren, and hear the very unique reason Nigel Mansell started his short McLaren career in Team Principal Ron Dennis's bad books.

Dickie worked in F1 various roles for Williams, including running the test team, as chief Mechanic to Nigel Mansell, and Race Team Manager. A career spanning 30 years, Dickie has seen his team evolve and enjoy much success in its heyday.

Having a former F1 driver and current pundit for a father in Martin Brundle, Alex is well-known in the Motorsport world. As well as having a famous name, Alex has competed in many racing series and also commentates on Formula 2 and Formula 3.

Quiz ’22

This week’s quiz is all things 2022. How closely was the panel paying attention this season, as they try to count everything from drivers to retirements and list the calendar in order? 

The battle for P4

An intense fight between the two was somewhat overshadowed by internal dysfunction. McLaren started terribly, but quickly recovered. Well, half their line-up did, at least… Alpine were quick from the get-go, but were plagued by poor reliability. Well, half their line-up was, at least… Personnel changes for next season will see shifts in team dynamic, but will they continue their fight for best of the rest?

A tale of two teams

Alfa Romeo and Aston Martin had divergent seasons yet converged at 55 points apiece. Alfa took a step forward, whilst Aston took a step back.

Valtteri Bottas was a revelation Alfa, but how did his rookie teammate fare? A surprisingly slow start for Aston made way for a resurgent Sebastian Vettel, who provided his own summer surprise.

Did Haas flatter to deceive?

After an abysmal 2021 season, the only way was up for Haas. With Nikita Mazepin sacked during the off-season, Kevin Magnussen shocked and delighted in equal measure with P5 on his return to F1 at the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix.

Exciting early season form eventually tailed off, but Mick Schumacher remained costly for the team. KMAG dovetailed the campaign with feel good performances, whilst Schumacher peaked mid-year. That wasn’t enough to save him, as Magnussen’s old foe replaces Mick for 2023.

Falls from grace

Perhaps the teams most disappointed with 2022 will be AlphaTauri and Williams – though admittedly, that’s to be expected as they finished P9 and P10.

AlphaTauri ran Haas close, but Pierre Gasly was unable to extract as much from the car as he did in previous years. Yuki Tsunoda took a step forward, or so it seemed, but struggled after securing his future for 2023, when Gasly will enjoy pastures new. Can his replacement, Nyck de Vries, deliver on the promise of his Monza cameo?

Williams might have provided that opportunity to De Vries, but it’s Logan Sargeant who has benefitted from a changing of the guard there. He replaces Nicholas Latifi, whose season never really got going. He partners Alex Albon, who was a bright spot in an otherwise frustrating season that saw Williams fall back to the foot of the standings.

Arguably the race weekend of the season, each meaningful session provided action and surprises. From first-time pole-sitters to first time winners, there is simply no predicting what Interlagos might offer.

Formula 1 headed to Mexico with both championships settled, but there is still plenty to play for elsewhere. Formula One returns to the Marina Bay circuit in Singapore for the first time since 2019, which could’ve been the championship decider.

The team didn’t have the easiest day from a driver-management perspective. Did they ultimately get it right, or did they get it wrong?

There were quiet and unassuming performances up and down the field. Some of them caught the attention of the team as they decided on their drivers of the day before concluding with their race rating.

Red Bull's success in Miami After an incredible weekend for Max Verstappen, and the Red Bull Team, the panel discuss whether Red Bull are truly capable to win. The team also chat about Horner’s comments that the season could go down to the Abu Dhabi finale.
