Ryan Dusick (Founding Drummer of Maroon 5)

We’re excited to have Ryan Dusick on the show. Ryan’s the former drummer and was a founding member of the band Maroon 5, one of the most popular groups in the world. Dusick was even part of the band that preceded Maroon 5, Kara's Flowers, which he and Adam Levine, Jesse Carmichael, and Mickey Madden founded in 1994, while they were still in high school.

Today, Ryan’s an Associate Marriage & Family Therapist, a mental health professional focusing on anxiety and sobriety. He’s also a published author with a new book out now titled Harder to Breathe: A Memoir of Making Maroon 5, Losing It All, and Finding Recovery. Ryan works at The Missing Peace Center for Anxiety in Agoura Hills, CA, where he’s spreading the message that recovery is possible. We’re thrilled to have him on the show today, and we hope his message has a positive impact on each of you who are listening.

As multi-faceted artists with a ton of creativity in their DNA, Michael and Kevin have been actively creating music together, well, since they were just kids. They call the genre-bending sound they make “Forosoco” - a blend of folk, rock, soul, and country influences. And that makes sense, considering it's the continuation of sounds heard long ago in Philadelphia, where the two siblings were raised on a soundtrack of 1970s singer/songwriters, Philly soul singers, and classic rock bands.

"We're a songwriting band, and the songs lead the way," Kevin explains. "We're not beholden to a specific sound. We just write the songs and let them point us in the right direction. That's how we've done it since the very beginning."

The Whitmore Sisters

We're really excited to share a conversation that Amy Wright recently had with sisters Eleanor and Bonnie Whitmore, two highly accomplished singer-songwriters who are releasing their first album together as The Whitmore Sisters. Titled Ghost Stories, the album is inspired by the loss of family, friends, ex-boyfriends and, on the title track, people who have died by police violence. These “ghosts” chose to appear right as Covid became entrenched, when live music evaporated and people were isolated from each other.

We dig into how this new record was produced by Chris Masterson, and how, ultimately, Ghost Stories’ cathartic songs embrace the beauty and the experience of living. What came from lock-down and shared experiences; hiking the Grand Canyon at five, playing bars at 15, getting their pilots’ licenses, or just embracing the beauty of living, is an album to take you places and make you feel so alive. Eleanor says she’s always liked Woody Guthrie’s way of looking at it: ‘Music is to comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable.’”

Karl Wallinger of World Party

We're excited to share our recent conversation with Welsh musician, songwriter, and record producer Karl Wallinger, best known for his band, World Party. We caught up with Karl from the control room of his new studio in Hastings in Southern England, where he's overlooking the sea – the English Channel, to be exact. In the 80s and 90s, Karl released a series of chart-topping albums, his first being the critically lauded Private Revolution. It featured the MTV darling doing nearly everything: singing, writing, producing, and playing most instruments. He escaped the sophomore slump with the release of the majestic Goodbye Jumbo. Rolling Stone said that "Goodbye Jumbo displays an ambition as broad as the emotional range of its music." More genius records followed until 2000, when all came to a crashing halt as Karl fell victim to a brain aneurysm. It took some time, but he picked up the pieces and began writing and recording again. This past year found Karl releasing vinyl reissues of his all the albums in his catalog. Our guest today is Justin Osborne, front man of the Charleston, SC-founded band SUSTO. SUSTO will return at the end of this month with a new record titled 'Time in the Sun' via New West Records. It follows their critically acclaimed 2019 studio album 'Ever Since I Lost My Mind'. The joy of birth, the closure of death, the warmth of true friendship, and the future rotate on the axis of this new record.

Prior to entering the studio, Osborne became a father and midway through recording, lost his own father to cancer. Because he had begun writing when he found out he was going to be a dad, these events were the biggest inspirations for the record. He says it felt like he was in between the beginning and the end of life. He’s a pretty profound guy and we really enjoyed connecting with him.

Courtney Marie Andrews spent over nine months of 2017 on the road, with multiple trips across the US, Canada, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. That's nothing new for Andrews, though. She's been touring relentlessly since leaving her Arizona hometown at 16. It's a life that inspired much of her 2016 breakthrough album, Honest Life. While that album's themes spoke to the isolation and rootlessness inherent in a life on the road, most of its songs were actually written during an intentional, extended break. The success that followed its release, however, didn't afford her the same break to write the material for her new album. Although May Your Kindness Remain was predominately written on the road -- in the van, in hotels, and in the homes of family and friends -- it's not a road record like its predecessor. That is, it's not so much inspired by her life on the road so much as it is by the people she's met along the way. Recorded March 2018
