      <title>How FMC Supports a New Era for U.S. Shipping</title>
<description>In this episode of the American Maritime Podcast, host Jennifer Carpenter sits down with Laura DiBella, newly appointed Chairman of the Federal Maritime Commission (FMC), to explore how the FMC is helping to drive a new era for America’s maritime industry.

DISCLAIMER: This podcast was recorded before the Trump Administration's 60-Day broad waiver of the Jones Act. Please sign up and be a VOICE to stay updated: https://americanmaritimevoices.org/

Chairman DiBella shares her path from local economic development director in Nassau County, Florida, to port director at the Port of Fernandina, leader of the Florida Harbor Pilots Association, Florida’s first female Secretary of Commerce, and now head of the FMC.

Together, Jennifer and Chairman DiBella discuss:

America’s Maritime Action Plan and why she sees it as an “economic development strategic plan” for the entire maritime ecosystem

How the FMC’s enforcement authority and policymaking support U.S. shippers and complement MARAD’s mission

The Commission’s priorities, including a more outward-facing Consumer Affairs Division and a broader global lens on choke points and flags of convenience

The ongoing Great Lakes investigation, ballast water and environmental collaboration with EPA

Closing the land border harbor maintenance tax loophole and what it means for U.S. ports and infrastructure

Implementation of the Ocean Shipping Reform Act of 2022 and new advisory committees, such as the port committee and shipping exchange

Growing Chinese Communist Party maritime influence, the role of choke point studies, and protecting critical maritime infrastructure

Why the Jones Act is, in her words, a “non‑negotiable” pillar of U.S. economic and national security

How a healthy U.S. maritime ecosystem starts at the local waterfront, from maritime opportunity zones to small business impacts and job creation

Chairman DiBella closes with a clear message: maritime can no longer be an afterthought—it must be at the center of America’s economic and security strategy.

<title>How US Maritime Industries Can Help Deter China</title>
      <link>https://www.hudson.org/events/how-us-maritime-industries-can-help-deter-china</link>
<description>China’s commercial maritime dominance is unprecedented in modern history. Last year, it won three-quarters of the world’s shipbuilding orders and delivered three ships to the Chinese navy for each ship American shipbuilders completed for the US Navy. This maritime dominance gives China extraordinary power to manipulate vital supply chains.

Jennifer Carpenter, president of the American Waterways Operators and the American Maritime Partnership, will join Senior Fellow Michael Roberts to discuss how America’s maritime industry can help counter China’s shipping and shipbuilding dominance.

The American Maritime Podcast is a part of the Big Whig Podcasts network and is made with the support of the American Maritime Partnership. This episode was produced by the Hudson Institute and is crossposted to the American Maritime Podcast feed with permission.

      <link>https://www.americanmaritimepartnership.com/dr-michael-pillsbury-author-china-expert-joins-american-maritime-podcast</link>
<description>In our latest episode of the American Maritime Podcast, we hear from Dr. Michael Pillsbury, a leading expert on China. During the podcast, Dr. Pillsbury discusses China's global mercantile strategy and maritime initiatives, the U.S. foreign policy response, and how the domestic American maritime sector is important to countering these efforts. Dr. Pillsbury is senior fellow and director for Chinese strategy at the Hudson Institute. He is a distinguished defense policy adviser, former high-ranking government official, and author of numerous books and reports on China, including The Hundred-Year Marathon: China's Secret Strategy to Replace America as the Global Superpower.
During the Reagan administration, Dr. Pillsbury was assistant under secretary of defense for policy planning and responsible for implementation of the program of covert aid known as the Reagan Doctrine. From 1975 to 1976, while an analyst at the RAND Corporation, he published articles in Foreign Policy and International Security recommending that the United States establish intelligence and military ties with China. The proposal, publicly commended by Ronald Reagan, Henry Kissinger, and James Schlesinger, later became U.S. policy during the Carter and Reagan administrations.
Dr. Pillsbury served on the staff of four U.S. Senate Committees from 1978 to 1984 and 1986 to 1991. As a staff member, he drafted the Senate Labor Committee version of the legislation that enacted the U.S. Institute of Peace in 1984. He also assisted in drafting the legislation to create the National Endowment for Democracy and the annual requirement for a DOD report on Chinese military power.
In 1992, under President George H. W. Bush, Dr. Pillsbury was special assistant for Asian affairs in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, reporting to Andrew W. Marshall, Director of Net Assessment. Dr. Pillsbury is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the International Institute for Strategic Studies.</description>

This American Maritime Podcast was recorded just two weeks ago. It highlights key aspects of an important recent study exploring the contribution of the maritime industry to our nation’s security. These subjects were important before today’s novel coronavirus crisis, and will again be important after the crisis passes. Indeed, it is more clear now than ever that the maritime supply chain has a critical role to play in security, preparedness, and safety. The American maritime industry and the over 650,000 workers that support it are committed to keeping American businesses and communities safe and moving forward.
