In the 15th century, conflicts between the Ottoman Empire and neighboring Wallachia (wall-ache-ia) rocked Eastern Europe. The Wallachian Army was lead by Vlad Tepes, whose harrowing tactics gave him the nickname Vlad the Impaler. But there was another name he went by, one that has become ingrained in our popular culture. That name was Dracula. This is Based on a True Crime.

Following the death of her husband, the heiress to the Winchester Rifle fortune suddenly moved west and began constructing on a sprawling, seven-story mansion, filled with doors and stairs that led nowhere. Although never confirmed, rumors spread that the mansion was being built continuously to appease the spirits of people killed by Winchester rifles, a story which infiltrated the public consciousness and became the inspiration for the 2018 movie “Winchester".

BEHIND THE SCREAMS: The Entity & Doris Bither

In the summer of 1974, Dr. Barry Taff, a now a renowned parapsychologist, was working as a research associate in UCLA's parapsychology laboratory. He and an associate, Kerry Gaynor, were overheard discussing the paranormal in a local bookstore by woman in her mid-thirties, and she approached them with a story about her house being haunted. She didn’t give them many details, but invited them to visit the home for themselves: a small bungalow located in Culver City, California.

The woman was Doris Bither, and it wasn’t until after Taff and Gaynor arrived at the house that they got the full story from Doris about the nature of these paranormal occurrences: since moving into the house, on almost a nightly basis, Doris was being violently attacked and raped by three nameless, shapeless, entities. In 1982, her story was adapted by Frank De Felitta into the film 'THE ENTITY', directed by Sidney J. Furie and starring Barbara Hershey and Ron Silver.

In the early 90s, Michael Alig rose to prominence as a club promoter and founding member of the Club Kids, before being arrested for the vicious murder of Angel Melendez while high on ketamine.

His story was brought to the big screen twice by directors Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato, first in 1998’s “Party Monster: The Shockumentary” and again in 2003’s “Party Monster,” starring Macaulay Culkin. This is Based on a True Crime.

Episode 37: The Exorcist

It's our Exorcist Halloween Special! In the Spring of 1949, a 14-year-old boy began exhibiting signs of demonic possession after the death of his aunt. Following a harrowing exorcism, the boy, known only as Roland Doe, was cured.

Local news stories about the exorcism caught the eye of William Peter Blatty, inspiring his 1971 novel “The Exorcist”. He also wrote the screenplay that became the 1973 film, directed by William Friedkin.

Episode 36: The Villisca Axe Murders

Late one night in June of 1912, eight people were bludgeoned to death in a house in Villisca, Iowa. Although several suspects were named, and even put on trial, the case remains unsolved.

The Villisca axe murder house remains as a tourist attraction, offering tours and overnight stays. Many supernatural events are said of have occurred there over the years, inspiring the 2017 indie horror film “The Axe Murders of Villisca.”

Episode 35: Jack Black's Bernie & the Real Bernie Tiede

In August of 1997, the body of 81-year old Marjorie Nugent was found in a taped up freezer in her home. Police quickly arrested her close, and only, friend, 39-year-old Bernie Tiede.

Much to the dismay of law enforcement, the city of Carthage, Texas rallied around Bernie, and tales of his supposed kindness versus the miserliness of Marjorie captured the attention of director Richard Linklater, who co-wrote and directed an adaptation of this true crime, BERNIE. On July 25, 1841, Mary Cecilia Rogers told her fiance she was leaving to visit family. Her body was found floating in the Hudson River three days later.

Edgar Allan Poe heard of her mysterious demise and sought to solve her murder through his writing. In 1842, he published the first detective story inspired by a true crime, “The Mystery of Marie Roget.” This is Based on a True Crime.

The account of a man who survived a terrifying attack years prior lead police to Ivan Milat, one inspiration for the deranged killer in the 2005 Australian horror film, Wolf Creek. This is based on a true crime.

Episode 32: Memories of Murder & the Hwaseong Serial Killer

In the early morning hours of September 15, 1986, the body of 71-year-old Lee Wan-im was found in the rice fields hear her home, strangled to death and bound with her own clothing. Crimes like this were not common in the rural city of Hwaseong in South Korea, but over the next five years they would become an almost regular occurrence: the work of a still unidentified serial killer.

In 2003, the story of the Hwaseong serial murders was brought to the big screen by Bong Joon-ho in his second feature film, the crime-thriller "Memories of Murder."

In 1939, convicted bank robber Henri Young tried and failed to escape from Alcatraz. Three years later, after spending time in solitary confinement, he stabbed Rufus McCain, a fellow escapee, to death. His subsequent trial hinged on his brutal treatment within the Alcatraz system and particularly while in solitary.

In 1995, his story was adapted into a film, Murder in the First, which presented a very favorable, if somewhat inaccurate, portrait of his life. This is Based on a True Crime.

Episode 26: Eaten Alive and Joe Ball

Two years after the success of 1974’s “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre”, director Tobe Hooper and screenwriter Kim Henkel joined forces for a follow-up movie 'EATEN ALIVE'. Once again, they searched for inspiration in annals of true crime history, and they found it in Joe Ball. Following the repeal of prohibition, Joe Ball opened up a tavern outside of Elmendorf, Texas and stocked a pit in the back with live alligators to put on gruesome shows for his customers. Soon after, the pretty young barmaids working at his tavern began to disappear.

Episode 25: The Executioner’s Song & Gary Gilmore

On July 2, 1976, the US Supreme court reserved its ruling that the death penalty was unconstitutional, allowing it to be reinstated as punishment for certain crimes. Less than three weeks later, on July 19, Gary Gilmore committed his first murder. In 1979, Norman Mailer published a Pulitzer Prize-winning non-fiction novel, immortalizing the life and death of Gilmore called “The Executioner’s Song”, which served as the basis for a made-for-TV movie of the same name.

In August of 1931, police searching a farm in Quiet Dell, West Virginia made a gruesome discovery: five bodies, three of them children, buried in a shallow drainage ditch. The women had been lured to the farm with the promise of marriage by Harry Powers, a serial killer who would later become known as the Bluebeard of Quiet Dell.

In popular culture, Harry Powers became Harry Powell, the itinerant preacher and terrifying antagonist of the 1953 novel, The Night of the Hunter, by Davis Grubb, and its 1955 film adaptation. This is Based on a True Crime.

On March 18, 1950, 13-year-old Janett Christman was babysitting for the Romacks in their small, isolated home on the outskirts of Columbia, Missouri. That night, the police received a phone call from a girl screaming hysterically but were unable to get an address. At 1:35 a.m., the Romacks returned home to find Janett murdered. The still-unsolved crime inspired the widely told urban legend, the babysitter and the man upstairs, which itself inspired several movies including the 1979 horror film “When a Stranger Calls” and its 2006 remake. Episode 19: Bob Crane & Auto Focus

By the late 1960s, Bob Crane was a household name, famous for his portrayal of the wisecracking Colonel Robert Hogan on Hogan’s Heroes. Less than 10 years after the show was abruptly cancelled, Crane’s still-unsolved murder brought to light his obsession with photographing and videotaping his numerous sexual encounters.

In 2002, the life and death of Bob Crane was brought to the big screen in the movie Auto Focus, which followed his rise to fame and concurrent transformation from a wholesome father of three to a sex addict, and finally a murder victim.

On May 18, 1827, Maria Marten left home to meet her lover, William Corder, at the Red Barn, a local landmark in Polstead, England. One year later, her stepmother, Ann Marten, has a series of prophetic dreams which led to the discovery of Maria’s body buried under the barn.

The Red Barn murder, as it became known, captured the public’s interest, inspiring broadsides, ballads, and plays, and made the barn a tourist destination. In 1935, the story was first adapted for the screen in the British melodrama “Murder in the Red Barn”.

On November 3, 1981, 14-year-old Marcy Renee Conrad was murdered by her friend, Anthony Jacques Broussard. For two days afterward, he bragged about the killing and took classmates to see her body in the hills, four miles outside of town.

The callousness of the teenagers who didn’t report his crime, and the backlash against the teenagers who finally did, triggered a nationwide reflection on disaffected youth and inspired the 1986 Tim Hunter film, River’s Edge.

Episode 7: Clairvius Narcisse, Zombies & The Serpent and the Rainbow

On May 2, 1962, Clairvius Narcisse was pronounced dead after suffering a brief illness at the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Haiti, and was buried in a cemetery near his village. In 1981, he returned to the village, claiming that he had spent two years as a zombie slave, controlled by a powerful Haitian vodou sorcerer.

This case, and the phenomenon of zombification, was investigated by ethnobotanist Wade Davis in his book, “The Serpent and the Rainbow,” which served as the basis for Wes Craven’s 1988 film of the same title.

Episode 6: Cyril and Stewart Marcus & Dead Ringers

On July 17, 1975, twin gynecologists Cyril and Stewart Marcus were found dead in their upscale Manhattan apartment, surrounded by decaying chicken parts, rotten fruit, and empty pill bottles.

The rise and precipitous fall of the doctors was the inspiration for David Cronenberg’s 1988 film, Dead Ringers, starring Jeremy Irons as both of the identical twins.

Summer Announcement

Hey everyone! Life got in the way this past week or so, which means that our episode won't come out until a little later this week. We're also switching to a bi-weekly (one per fortnight) format for our longer episodes with minisodes on alternating weeks. Between research, watching the movies, recording and editing (plus both our full time jobs and art) each episode takes a long time to make and we really don't want to skimp on quality in favor of quantity!

Our minisodes will be similar to the Awakening the Zodiac episode (but 20-30 minutes hopefully unless I talk too much!), and will also give us the freedom to talk about some of our favorite horror movies, current true crime events, etc!

We hope you enjoy our new format and we look forward to your feedback! (And sorry for the late episode!)

Episode 5: 10 Rillington Place

On March 9, 1950, Timothy John Evans was executed by hanging, following the murder of his wife, Beryl, and 13 month old daughter, Geraldine.

Three years later, it would be revealed that their neighbor John Reginald Halliday Christie was a serial killer, responsible for the deaths of Beryl, Geraldine, and 6 other women. The wrongful execution of Evans lead to the suspension and eventual abolishment of capital punishment in the UK, and was dramatized in the 1971 film, 10 Rillington Place. This is Based on a True Crime.

Episode 4: Lake Bodom

On June 5, 1960, some time between the hours of 4 and 6AM, four teenagers were savagely attacked while camping at the edge of Lake Bodom in Finland. Only one survived. This unsolved crime has spawned a number of theories and potential suspects, including a KGB spy and the surviving victim himself. It also inspired a 2016 horror movie, called Lake Bodom.

NOTE: As one of our first episodes, the quality of our recording methods wasn't as advanced and we had only a basic knowledge of making a podcast. Many of the reviews don't take that into consideration. If you're just starting out with our show, please try one of our later episodes before writing a nasty review.

The legend of Cropsey has been told around many campfires in the New England area as a warning tale for misbehaving children, and inspired a number of slasher movies. In the 1970s, the legend seemingly came to life when children on Staten Island began disappearing. Save one, their bodies were never found.
