Larry has long loved hunting Coues whitetail, known as "The Grey Ghost of the Desert".

In this episode Larry talks about hunting the fabulous El Durangueno Ranch in Durango, Mexico's Sierra Madre Mountains. The late and great Jack O'Connor considered the diminutive Coues whitetail subspecies North America's Greatest Game Animal Larry certainly agrees. Larry discusses differences between Coues and "regular" whitetails, hunting techniques, and many more topics, including describing him taking a great buck during the last moments of his hunt. Great information, good stories, and even an invitation to go hunt Coues deer in the future with Larry.

The Setup: Larry was invited as a guest of Avient, a world-renowned polymer producer, to assist with introducing them to various manufacturers. He was using a rifle with an Avient barrel and a Stealth Vision scope. The rifle was a 7mm PRC with Hornady 175-grain ELD-X Precision Hunter bullets, which he notes is "unbelievably accurate".

The Hunt: After his friend, Jim McQuerry, successfully harvested an impressive 10-point buck, Larry returned to the field. Larry hunted with Jim and Dusty and Jessica Vickery, who run the lodge. They spotted a massive deer in thickets. Larry ended up taking the deer with a shot at 50-60 yards using a borrowed .22 Creedmoor rifle with 80-grain Hornady ELD-X bullets.

The Trophy: The buck was an "absolute monster". Its antlers scored 357 (gross) on the Boone and Crockett system. Larry reports that the antlers were wider than he could imagine, with an outside spread of 37.5 inches, and featured eight drop tines. Larry shares that while some may criticize hunting a high-fenced property, the circumstances of his health and the sheer experience of taking such an animal make it a cherished memory.

🦌 Hunt Two: The Red River Buck

The second story takes place in Montague County, Texas, on a lease near the Oklahoma border. Larry's goal was to rattle a white-tail buck out of Oklahoma, across the Red River, and into Texas.

Location: A lease in Montague County, Texas, along the Red River.

The Setup: Larry spent time prior to the hunt putting out Vineyard Max attractant in the area and set up near a trail coming out of the river. He hunted mid-day, which he firmly believes is an excellent time to hunt, especially when the moon is new or full.

The Hunt: After an unsuccessful morning, Larry returned to his spot at noon. He started rattling antlers and after his first sequence, a mature buck came towards him from the river, showing signs of having just crossed the water. When the buck turned to walk away, Larry grunted at it, which caused the deer to turn back. He was able to get a shot off through a small window in the brush with his 7mm PRC rifle.

The Trophy: The buck was a mature, six-year-old basic 9-point with a couple of kickers, scoring about 145. It was a special hunt because he achieved his goal of rattling a buck out of a different state and taking it on his home turf.

I recorded this interview recorded in Oklahoma, on the property previously owned by Miranda Lambert, entertainer extraordinaire. Jim, Rick Lambert (Miranda’s dad) and I were there fishing for bluegills, one of Jim’s favorite fish. His doing so impresses me more than his world speed shooting records. Kay's father was Jimmy Clark, one of the world's best pistolsmiths and shooters. He taught his daughter early on how to shoot handguns and shoot them ultra accurately. She has collected many Gold and Silver Medals shooting in World IPSC competitions as well as in other handgun competitions. Jerry and Kay Miculek combined are without a doubt two of the world's best and most known and recognized shooters. In this episode we talk about a lot of things, but mostly not about shooting competitions and more about hunting, wildlife and growing up in the country!

Recently ace cameraman and fabulous artist Jeremiah Bennett and I spent several days in Baja California, Mexico pursuing ghosts. Or so it seems. We were in Baja to film me hunting Baja blacktail deer, a subspecies of the Columbian blacktail found from Washington to the lower regions of California for an episode of "Trijicon's World of Sports Afield" which airs on Sportsman's Channel, but also for a segment for "A Sportsman's Life" our weekly digital tv show that airs on CarbonTV.com. We were told by our outfitter the blacktail subspecies were not overly plentiful, but he saw no reason to shoot a buck unless it was at least representative of the species..which to me meant we should see a couple of bucks during out 5-day hunt. I was also told upon my arrival to San Diego, CA, my rifle permit had not been procured, and I could wait for it be signed, which might take days, or use a borrowed rifle. Upon reaching camp we drove through some of the spectacular high desert terrain and vegetation that likely exists on Earth. Our camp was a comfortable cabin. The rifle handed me was an ancient bolt action, topped with a scope I did not recognize, and a hand full of full metal jacket bullet cartridges. The no rifle permit..should have keyed me to what to expect on the trip. When I first started hunting whitetails trail cameras, computer programs were hardly even anyone's dream, much less a reality. Maps of your hunting country were usually hand-drawn after walking property, who owned the land next door were learned by knocking on their doors, when deer moved was determined from year's of hunting experience, finding your way around in unfamiliar territory was most often accomplished by using a compass. Serious hunters had much to learn and considerable to remember. With the advent of computers and computer programs and apps, trail cameras and the like, much of what it took hunters years to learn and "store in between their ears", and a whole lot more is now available at their fingertips. This thanks to HuntStand and Brian Murphy. Most of you will remember Brian from his many faithful and excellent years at Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA), but now with HuntStand. "Hunting brings people together, unlike any other outdoor activity. I became friends with Brandon Houston on a deer hunt he invited me to, on one of the properties he manages for wildlife with emphasis on whitetail deer, but also non-game species. Brandon, like me, is a professional wildlife biologist. Soon after becoming friends he asked me to become involved in his H3 Whitetail Solutions wildlife management consulting company, which not only works with whitetail deer but all wildlife and their habitat. Hunting for whitetails with Brandon on my hunting lease in western Texas this time was for does with my Taurus Raging Hunter .454 Casull revolver, topped with a Trijicon SRO red-dot sight, and shooting Hornady's 300-grain XTP Custom ammo. During the hunt Brandon and I were also able to do a fair bit of exploring, as well camp cooking and sitting on water holes or near to them. We were able to each take a whitetail doe. The conversation on this episode starts out with Brandon and Larry having found an old stone building which originally served as a U. S. Calvary outpost when the lands west of San Angelo, Texas were still populated with marauding bandits, and the occasional attacks on settlers by the native American who resented western expansion."
