Welcome back to WE ARE STARFLEET: A Star Trek Discovery podcast!

In this specialty episode celebrating ONE YEAR of the podcast launching, host Mike Slamer speaks with New York Times best selling author and academic, Dr. Una McCormack, about her new tie-in novel to season three of Star Trek Discovery, Wonderlands.

Wonderlands is set over the course of the year between Michael Burnham arriving in the 32nd century, and reconnecting with the starship Discovery. The book follows Burnham as she struggles to adapt to a galaxy without the Federation, and the tattered legacy that Starfleet has left behind. There are new characters introduced, derelict starships to explore, starbases teeming with life, and Burnham and Booker grow a bit closer. All this while an invasive pirate fleet of ships threatens to further destabilize an already awful situation.

We discuss the novel, a bit of the writing process and the themes of loneliness and isolation being so analogous to our own experience with the COVID19 pandemic. Una shares how she got her start with Deep Space 9, and how science fiction plays a role in our culture.

22. Discovery: 3x13 "That Hope Is You, Part 2."

Season 3 of Star Trek Discovery has come to a close with “That Hope is You, Part 2.”

The theme of this episode seems to be “missed opportunities.” Join Mike and Ian as they take their time working their way through the nebula of the finale and unpacking those final moments. Doug Jones' Captain Saru carries the finale through to the finish resolving the mystery of The Burn, while also carrying the legacy of Starfleet's best captains making the hard choices. Lt. Owo goes to the edge to save the ship, while we are treated to great visual FX and fun dialogue throughout "She's a queen!", with brilliant action and set pieces serving up a visual feast! On the flip side, Zora & the DOT23s get horrendously underutilized, Tilly fails to have a true redemption moment to close her character arc for the season, turbolifts must exist in a different dimension, and the epilogue offers precious little closure for fan favorites Captain Saru and Acting XO Tilly.

We’re talking Terra Firma Part Two, which gives us the first instance of a torture montage in Star Trek.

Breaking down the closing of Georgiou’s arc in the mirror universe, Ian and Mike consider how the writers of Star Trek Discovery have successfully created a cruel and devastating universe out of what used to be a hokey “what if” concept. Plenty of missed opportunities within, but Georgiou seems to have learned her lessons as Carl reveals his purpose as The Guardian Of Forever and sends Georgiou off. Little progression on The Burn in this episode, but Book has the answer to solve this week’s mystery with a wifi range extender. Sorry, subspace range extender. Meta references to Tig Notaro’s production schedule, references to Star Trek Voyager, and most importantly… PROTECT CAPTAIN SARU.

Does it work? Ian and Mike both think so! Join them as they discuss the enigmatic entity Carl, Booker’s eagerness to work with the Federation, and what it means that Kelpians have stumbled across a dilithium nursery. In the Mirror Universe, things get a little crazy with a lovely theater performance, which is considered a dull affair without at least one stabbing. Owosekun showcases serious hand-to-hand combat skills, and steals every scene without a word, and Sonequa Martin Green channels Heath Ledger’s performance as The Joker.

It’s time for a worker’s revolt/prison break/treasure hunt adventure of Star Trek Discovery, with Burnham and Georgiou taking off on an unsanctioned mission.

Are we getting closer to discovering the origins of The Burn? The Emerald Chain shows some teeth, but Georgiou’s teeth are sharper. Captain Saru is faced with a Number One quandary, while 32nd century technology and upgrades are a welcome sight. Tilly is not a cat person, Linus can’t find his way around the Discovery, and Adira seems to be finding a place. Mike and Ian break down the events of Episode 6, “Scavengers” as the struggle with trauma continues to be an underlying current of the story.

Tackling mental health straight on is a challenging effort for a television show, but with Culber taking center stage, it feels like we’re all in good hands. Burnham takes a shuttle down to the Trill home-world and goes for a quick swim with the symbionts, while Adira makes sense of the past. Lt. Detmer cracks under the haiku, and Georgiou leaves with the wine. Saru gets more time to grow onscreen as a character, flexing his social and command muscles.
