Every Rockie Ever #36: Big Daddy and Little Pony

In this new episode of Every Rockie Ever, Skyler and Dustin reunite to discuss the number 5 in Rockies history. From the early days of the 2000s, the number was synonymous with the power-hitting outfielders thanks to Matt Holliday. From the moment he took over during his rookie season, he put on a power-hitting display in Colorado, playing a key role in their 2007 World Series run where he finished 2nd in the NL MVP voting and did in fact touch home plate in game 163. However, his rise to stardom made it unlikely for him to stay in Colorado and after the 2008 season the Rockies sent him to Oakland, receiving a talented young outfielder named Carlos Gonzalez. It took a hot minute for CarGo to get settled in, but he quickly established himself as an exciting and electric talent in and spent the next decade in purple. With the sweetest swing in baseball, this side of Ken Griffey Jr. CarGo dazzled fans with his elite defense, cannon of an arm, and incredible power. Unfortunately, his fall from grace at the tail end of his career is a sad tell to exam, but it doesn't diminish his incredible talent and place in Rockies history. Both were excellent talents in Colorado and a major reason why the number 5 is still out of rotation for the team.

Every Rockie Ever #35: Dustin Garneau, Tony Wolters, Scott Oberg

In this week's episode of Every Rockie Ever, Skyler and Dustin convened on a snow day to chat former players that currently work as coaches in the Rockies system. Recently, the Rockies hired former catcher Dustin Garneau as the major league bullpen coach. Despite a career that didn't flourish at the plate, Garneau has been known for solid defense and his work as catching coordinator/game planner for the minor league system the past two years presents some hope for the team's young bullpen.

They then turn focus to fan favorite and 2018 Wild Card game hero Tony Wolters. Wolters joined the organization as the bench coach for the ACL Rockies in 2024, and the brothers break down his excellent work behind the plate working with pitches, lamenting that his offense never took off, and getting to the root of why he had the nickname Papers.

Finally, they close things out mourning what could have been for current Rockies special assistant Scott Oberg. As Oberg was growing into prominence as a reliever, a recurring blood clot issue in his arm forced an early retirement from baseball, robbing both Oberg and fans of the high-quality reliever he was becoming. Still, there are wonderful moments to celebrate, like his role in closing out the 2018 Wild Card victory over the Cubs.

For the first six years of their existence, Baylor captained the ship helping lay a foundation for Rockies baseball that has persevered over 30 years. Skyler and Dustin look back on not only his time as the manager, but his legacy as a player, a leader, and most importantly as a man. He was known as a giant among men, commanding respect everywhere he went. He was a baseball lifer until he passed away from cancer in 2017. The boys do their best to honor and remember one of the most important non-player Rockies in franchise history.

Every Rockie Ever #21: Mike Hampton & Other SP Free Agent Busts

An inability to draw top-tier free agents to the thin air of Coors Field has been a struggle for the Rockies for decades. However, in 2001 the team took a gamble and spent big on a pair of pitchers. Mike Hampton was signed to a 8-year deal while Denny Neagle signed a 5-year deal. Despite the effort to bolster the rotation, both pitchers failed to deliver on their respective contracts. Later in 2015, the team spent $5 million on Kyle Kendrick to eat innings, but it was one the worst pitching seasons in team history. These three pitchers are examples that the Rockies use to justify not spending big on starting pitching, opting for homegrown and bargain-bin talent. Dustin and Skyler try to look back on these signings and why they ended up being busts.

Following the 2017 season, Jeff Bridich and the Colorado Rockies decided to spend $106 million dollars on the bullpen, signing Jake McGee, Bryan Shaw, and Wade Davis. Unfortunately for the Rockies, none of the players finished out their contract as ineffectiveness, injury, and other circumstances forced the Rockies to cut ties with each of them. Skyler and Dustin do their best to reflect on the initial hopeful reactions to the signings and lament that none of the deals made the most sense with the money that was offered. McGee had solid years prior to the new contract, Davis led the NL in saves in 2018, and Shaw ate innings. The Super Bullpen was shortlived and one of the biggest blunders by the Rockies in recent memory.

While there are definitely bright spots to address from this year, this week we are focusing on the negatives. 103 losses is rock bottom for a struggling franchise that hasn't put up a winning campaign since 2018 and lacks both focus and identity. We also discuss the Charlie Blackmon extension, what it means for the franchise, and name our position player, pitcher, and MVP for the month of September.

This week, Skyler and Evan discuss the struggles of the Rockies late in games this past week. Despite some competitive starting pitching and offensive efforts, the Rockies haven’t been able to seal the deal late in the game. “We aren’t losing, we’re getting beat” has been the sentiment from Bud Black, and that sums up the struggles. Additionally, they talk about the mutual interest between Charlie Blackmon and the Rockies for 2024 as well as the promotion of Evan Justice to the bullpen. They round out the show by pinpointing prospects they’d like to see get some action at the end of the season.

Note: Hunter Goodman was called up the day after recording this episode.

Pebble Report Podcast: Wynton Bernard headlines the All-July Team

This week, Mac has returned to us! ...But now Skyler is gone. Mac and Evan finish off the June Player of the Month ratings, Kris Bryant has finally uncorked the power in his bat, and Daniel Bard keeps going strong as the Rockies closer. Meanwhile, José Ureña made his return to the bigs in a Colorado Rockies uniform. He performed admirably in a spot start for the injured Antonio Senzatela, but the cost was heavy. Once-top corner infielder prospect Colton Welker has been designated for assignment and claimed away. Was it worth it? Evan also complains about Elehuris Montero not getting enough playing time for the third week in a row after some quotes from Bud Black were posted in Thomas Harding's newsletter. While one top prospect struggles to find footing in the major leagues, two more are set to represent the Rockies in the Futures Game during All-Star festivities.

...Speaking of festivities, the World Baseball Classic is returning at last! Last held in 2017, the WBC in 2021 was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Thankfully the exciting worldwide showcase will be returning in 2023!

Affected by Altitude: Say It Ain't So, I Will Not Go

The Colorado Rockies are not necessarily a bad team on paper, but the execution seems to be flawed at every level. This week, Skyler, Mac, and Evan sit down and have a much needed talk on what is wrong with this organization's approach to both pitching and hitting: analytics and coaching. On the pitching side, Yency Almonte is one of the Los Angeles Dodgers best relievers after being outrighted off the Rockies roster with a 7.55 ERA in 2021. Offensively we have taken a guy like Randal Grichuk--who specializes in fly ball and line drive contact--and have him driving the ball into the dirt at career high levels. The Rockies need to completely change their organizational approach and it starts with a shakeup of Bud Black's coaching staff (Darryl Scott and Dave Magadan) and finally getting with the times when it comes to R&D.

We do have some positives to talk about though. Kris Bryant is on the mend and expected to be back with the team soon, and some members of the rotation really seem to be turning a corner. Meanwhile, the Rockies had several big league debuts this season and we've seen some interesting results. Brian Serven--the rookie catcher--has been such a pleasant surprise this season.
