Remember When: Abstain for the Game was the century’s most bizarre ad campaign

Ahead of the incredibly tense 2011 Rugby World Cup, Abstain for the Game was a Telecom (now Spark) ad campagin using former All Black captain Sean Fitzpatrick, in a tuxedo, driving a pink dodgem, asking a tightly wound nation to keep it in their pants. It was an extremely odd ad, and created a furious response from a humourless public. Within days it was withdrawn with heavy apologies. But the ad has aged well, and as The Real Pod remembers when, they also ask – did we get this one wrong?

Our beloved Tāme bowed out on account of his lovely old bones, leaving a gaping hole in the spirit of Tohorā and, quite frankly, the whole nation. It seems the early game niceties have come to an end as alliances form, trust is broken and a certain someone doesn’t share his cheeseburger. Last week we had a lovely telly show, but this week we have a game.

As you can read about now in The Spinoff's oral history of the song, this was a time when hip hop in Aotearoa was at its peak, music video directors were hot property, and kids were still buying CD singles. So how did Sani Sagala, a former musician working in a South Auckland bakery, find himself in the centre of the hip hop storm with the highest selling single of the year? Approximately a thousand years ago, the idea of The Real Pod maybe, possibly, perhaps one day recapping the Twilight movie was floated. The people heard the rally cry, and a small but incredibly insistent movement began.

The comments on Facebook asking “Twilight pod?” kept trickling in, and after the sixth or seventh one, we finally relented. As if we could outrun it... as if we could fight it off.

So here we are in Forks, Washington, diving deep into all the mystery and wonder of an unstoppable love between vampire and human. Join us as we talk 2000s fashion, terrible hair, fast cars, mushroom risotto, twenty-three year old doctor dads and that scene in the parking lot. Plus Alex drops a bombshell about R-Patz that none of us smelt coming.

It’s The Real Pod, and it’s really, really long. What a stupid pod… What sick, masochistic podcasters.

The Real Pod: The Bachelorette gets naked, teary and herniated in Argentina

Two wonderful women and a mixed bag of lads jetted off to Argentina this week, one which saw a serious culling of the meek set of the herd. Conor, Flynn and Mr Wedge all departed, nearly joined by Tavita, who was only saved after his hernia was given a double shaka down at the hospitable.

The big change at the 'actually plausible winners' end of the competition was Aaron disintegrating before our wide eyes. First he snitched on Steve for his hobby of the odd sly dart, then he did a diary cam in maybe the worst possible location in their mansion/prison, then he fell apart in ways which we found either endearing or terrifying. Alex, Jane and Duncan recount every wild moment, with a little recap of the first few MAFS AU weddings for dessert. Delicious, like a block of fresh gouda.

Tyson continued to be the shabbiest chic around, Daniel had a lemon-based meltdown and PJ and Rob proved to be the biggest sweethearts at the table. Pity their salsa was so salty. The Block boys are hiding in wardrobes to avoid drama

On the most dramatic season of The Block NZ yet, two boys from Te Kuiti aren’t taking the bait.

It was Master Bedroom week on The Block NZ when judge Jason Bonham opened the door and collapsed into a fit of laughter at apartment three’s latest offering. Sure, it was an extremely blue room with weirdly-placed receding shelves, but it wasn’t really funny. It wasn’t funny as Lisa’s “Eat Her Right” sign she tried to hang in in week one, it wasn’t as funny as Mikaere’s Jeepers Creepers hat and it certainly wasn’t as funny as James Reid from The Feelers.

“She’s a bit of a kick in the guts eh, it’s very hard,” says Sam, one half of ‘the boys’ from Te Kuiti, who are slowly turning Apartment three into Jason Bonham’s chuckle factory on this season of The Block NZ . “We work our guts out and so do our builders, so for them to just come in and giggle and laugh at our efforts is pretty disheartening.” His teammate Ethan is struggling to find the words to describe the judges, wary of being impolite. “I wanna say… they’re rude.”

Dancing With the Stars NZ had one explosive finale, complete with rugby balls and Julz Tocker doing a rambunctious jive, with Manu Vatuvei being crowned the winner of the glitter ball trophy.

There was also the premiere of The Block NZ: Firehouse, set a stone's throw away in Kingsland. If the extremely rude sign and caricature millennials are anything to go by, it's going to be a cracker of a season. We have reached the end of The Bachelor journey, and celebrate accordingly with no Lindauer, no baking and no real plan. Matilda helps us to dissect the drenched week of Bachelor news, quashing rumours and revealing scoops aplenty. Does she prefer John Campbell or Paul Henry? What's Mike Puru like? How's her wrist doing? Is Art's flat nice?

As the door slowly closes on The Fantasy Suite (until season two), lament not. We will be back for Dancing With the Stars whether you like it or not.

Note: From now on we will publish occasional one-off podcasts covering particular one-off television events – like this look at the 20/20 Bruce Jenner interview – in addition to all our other regular reality TV pods like ‘After the Factor’ and ‘The Fantasy Suite’. It's time for the After the Final Rose special of The Bachelor NZ. Jane Yee, Alex Casey and Duncan Greive pop a Lindauer and chat about the somewhat disappointing aftermath of The Bachelor NZ. With Jane and Duncan attending the 700 hour-long filming of After the Final Rose, there are scoops aplenty (mostly that they served cheese and crackers and Brigette's beard-boobs).

There's a few exciting announcements – The Bachelor season two, the return of Dancing With the Stars NZ and our subsequent sequinned podcasting plans. From there, things slowly descend from the dizzying heights of The Heritage conference room to the depths of social media, where we scrape around for the last koala nuggets hiding at the bottom of The Bachelor barrel.

We celebrate the end of our quest for Forever Love with a Forever Podcast. Jane Yee, Alex Casey and Duncan Greive finally get their long-sought after Lindauer sponsorship, and drank it watching a landmark television event: the end of New Zealand's first ever Bachelor franchise. It promised much and delivered more, from bad bottom animals to mouthy mums to Gollum-esque jewellers. We loved every ridiculous moment, and spent way too long chewing on its delicious fat.

And as a reward for listeners who grow weary of the excessive analysis of this skimpy bikini of a show – Duncan has a bombshell rumour dropping near the end that is potentially maybe something you might want to stick around for, as Art would say.
