In season 1, we're going to explore one of the most well-known cases: Anneliese Michel.

As Anneliese’s story progresses, the tension between religion and science, or maybe more specifically, faith and reason, will become more complex. We can already sense the tension as Anneliese’s family tries desperately to find solutions for her struggles.

But with her doctors unable to find a cause for her blackouts and paralysis episodes, Anneliese becomes more convinced that her afflictions are more spiritual than medical.

As the medical symptoms—and questions—pile up, Anneliese begins showing signs that something much darker may be occurring. And it leaves us to wrestle with a series of difficult questions:

Should faith and reason be arch enemies, or is there a way for them to coexist? Does religious conviction require a person to cast aside rational thought? And perhaps one of the most interesting questions of all, and I’ll say up front that it’s a sensitive one—is it possible that what was once understood as demonic possession is actually a form of mental illness?

In this episode of The Possession Files, we’re going to explore the symptoms and signs of Anneliese’s struggles and hopefully gain a better grasp of the medical symptoms—and because Anneliese was convinced her troubles were spiritual—the signs of demonic possession.

Creativity and imagination, when set free, allow us to soar to new heights and explore places, people, and situations that we may not be able to otherwise.

And therein lies the beauty of Mary Shelley’s novel—she dared to defy societal norms and expectations; instead, choosing to lead with her imagination and heart—the result of which is by and large, one of the greatest pieces of literature and inarguably one of the most recognizable protagonists of all-time.

It is my absolute privilege and honor to bring Frankenstein to life over these next few weeks and episodes.

An epistolary novel, the story unfolds through letters, diary entries, and newspaper clippings. As much a historical novel as gothic fiction, Dracula is considered a masterpiece of English literature whose characters have endured for over 125 years.

Recently, I watched The Last Voyage of the Demeter and really enjoyed it—and though I knew it was based on a chapter in Bram Stoker’s Dracula, it’d been years since I read it. Until now.

First published in 1871, Vampire by Jan Neruda tell the story of a young man who falls in love with a mysterious woman. His interest turns to infatuation, and then to obsession—and as time passes, he becomes convinced she is a vampire.

Our second story is equally creepy.

First published in 1900, The Vampire of Croglin Grange by Augustus Hare tells the story of three people who are terrorized by a vampire in their home. Augustus’ vivid imagery paints an eerie picture of a blood-thirsty and undead creature of the night. And, it’s allegedly based on a true story.

First published in 1909, The Occupant of the Room by Algernon Blackwood tells the story of a schoolmaster on vacation in the Swiss Alps.

While seeking a room at the local inn, he is initially turned away, as there are no vacancies. Sort of. The innkeeper offers him a room that was previously occupied by a missing hiker. You’ll have to keep listening to find out the rest.  

Blackwood’s story is creepy and atmospheric—and is best listened to in the dark.

First published in 1907, The Voice in the Night by William Hope Hodgson, is a terrific short horror story that has been adapted several times over the past century-plus.

The story involves two boats, one with a small crew of sailors; the other, seemingly abandoned. A mysterious voice calls from the boat, asking for food; but, despite the sailor’s requests, refuses to come into the light.

Focusing on themes of corruption amidst the mysterious, and fear of the unknown, Hodgson’s tale can be read as a warning against betraying one’s morality in the face of mysterious circumstances. If you’re afraid of the dark, this story is guaranteed to keep you up at night!

So, sit back, turn down the lights, pull up the covers, and pay close attention as I read The Voice in the Night by William Hope Hodgson.

The Annabelle movies, part of the larger Conjuring universe, introduced the cursed doll to the masses. And while the movies depict her as terrifying—and murderous—at first glance, she isn’t particularly striking or scary. And, since 1970, she has sat in a glass enclosure at Ed and Lorraine Warren’s Occult Museum in Monroe, Connecticut—with a warning at the bottom of the case that reads: “Warning, positively do not open.”

First published in 1893, The Damned Thing by Ambrose Bierce is a terrific short horror story that can be read in a few short minutes. The story involves eight men who have gathered for an inquest into the death of Hugh Morgan, who perished under mysterious circumstances. The men are seated in a room, along with several others—and Morgan’s corpse lying on a table in the middle, covered by a sheet.

Focusing on themes of the unknowable, Bierce’s tale reminds the reader there is often more than meets the eye; and is guaranteed to keep you up at night!

In October 1974, an exorcism was performed on Michael Taylor--who church officials claimed was possessed by as many as 40 demons. Over 8 hours, Michael was subjected to an agonizing exorcism ritual--and all but 3 demons were cast away.

The three that remained were named insanity, anger, and murder.

The plan was to finish the exorcism the following day after everyone had gotten some rest. That day would never come.

Was Michael Taylor really possessed by 40 demons as some claimed? Or was he suffering from a mental health crisis?

In many Spanish-speaking countries, the Bogeyman is known as “El Coco,” though the specific name varies from country to country and culture to culture. Other variations of El Coco include “Coca, Cucuy, Cuca, Cucu, Cucui,”—and of course, El Cuco. Despite the variations in name and details, there is a terrifying reality that ties them all together:

El Coco is a child-eater.

And, after the murders were committed, and the trail went cold, police brought in a psychic—who may have helped solve the case.
