      <link>https://uplink.simplecast.com/episodes/boeings-steep-climb-to-regain-trust-9O9wPvxX</link>
<description>In this episode of 'Uplink: The Big Story, we delve into the ongoing saga of Boeing's 737 MAX 9 and its implications for the aviation industry. The recent FAA inspections of Boeing 737 MAX 9 airplanes, following a serious incident where a cabin panel detached mid-flight, have brought Boeing's manufacturing processes and safety protocols sharply into focus. With 40 of the 171 grounded planes requiring reinspection, the FAA's thorough review process is critical to potentially ungrounding these aircraft. This development has caused significant disruptions for major users like Alaska Airlines and United Airlines, leading to the cancellation of hundreds of flights and raising serious questions about Boeing's future in aviation.
Adding to the complexity, a separate incident involving US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who was stranded due to a malfunction in his Boeing 737, has only intensified the scrutiny on Boeing. The potential impact of a U.S. government shutdown on the National Transportation Safety Board's (NTSB) investigation into Boeing's issues further complicates the scenario. This episode isn't just about technical failures; it's a deep dive into the issues of public trust, industry confidence, and the future of one of the largest players in the aviation sector. We explore Boeing's multifaceted challenges, including the need for a cultural shift within the company, emphasizing safety and quality over all else.
Our discussion also extends to the broader implications of this situation for our listeners, particularly young professionals and aspiring aviation industry members. We explore how Boeing's challenges present unique learning opportunities in crisis management and corporate responsibility, highlighting the growing need for innovation centered around safety and reliability. This episode is not just an analysis of current events; it's a call to the next generation of aviation professionals to lead the charge in shaping a safer, more reliable future for the industry. Join us on 'Uplink: The Big Story' as we navigate these turbulent skies and chart Boeing's challenging path toward redemption.

<itunes:subtitle>Boeing's Steep Climb to Regain Trust – In this episode of 'Uplink: The Big Story,' we delve into Boeing's storm of challenges. After a January 5th incident where an Alaska Airlines jet suffered a significant fuselage rupture shortly after takeoff from Oregon, leading to an emergency landing, while none of the 171 passengers and six crew members on board were seriously injured, it's the aircraft manufacturer that has arguably suffered the most significant blow to its reputation and business. Now, engulfed in a valley of doubt, the aviation giant's credibility and leadership are at risk, and the company must do everything in its power to regain its footing amidst intense skepticism, scrutiny, and safety concerns. How will Boeing's leadership steady the course and restore confidence? How should the public view the safety of flying on Boeing aircraft? What implications does this have for young professionals in the industry? Is the FAA just as culpable? We explore these questions and more. Welcome to Uplink: The Big Story– the aviation dialogue starts here. </itunes:subtitle>

<description>Join us on Uplink as we discuss the launch of SpaceX 'Starship' and its first orbital test flight. Plus, should taxpayers be compensated for the profits of SpaceX? Also, the National Aircraft Finance Association is hosting its 51st annual conference this week. We share some key topics the industry will discuss at the conference.
Our featured guest this week is Mr. Lou Seno. Seno serves as Chairman Emeritus and Special Advisor to the JSSI Board of Directors. Before joining JSSI, Mr. Seno held senior management positions at the business aircraft units of Boeing Capital Corp. and G.E. Capital Solutions.
Lou is very active in the aviation industry, serving on Boards for organizations like the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA), Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), National Aircraft Finance Association (NAFA), and Dreams Soar. Mr. Seno is a long-time general aviation pilot and aircraft owner with over 7,000 hours of flight time. The FAA presented the Wright Brothers' "Master Pilot" award in 2016.
In our conversation, we ask Mr. Seno how organizations which he serves on the Board for are coping with the mechanic shortage. We dive into what the Business Aviation sector focuses on now with the pandemic tailwinds slowing down. Finally, we discuss what to expect during this week's 51st National Aircraft Finance Association (NAFA) conference in Florida.

<title>Let's talk politics and policy—why aren't more young people signing up for those jobs? Greg Principato weighs in. Plus, so many aircraft near-misses—what's going on?</title>
      <link>https://uplink.simplecast.com/episodes/lets-talk-politics-and-policy-in-aviation-why-arent-more-young-people-signing-up-for-those-jobs-greg-principato-president-and-ceo-of-the-national-aeronautic-association-weighs-in-plus-so-many-aircraft-near-misseswhats-going-on-UQPpFmJr</link>
<description>This week on Uplink, we talk about an “uptick” of aircraft runway incursions and close calls. According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), there have been 381 runway incursions reported so far in 2023. We ask the question: are we noticing more airline incursions now due to social media, or has it always been there and not reported on? Furthermore, we talk about the FAA Safety Summit that was hosted to address the increase in aircraft incursions.
Our guest this week is Greg Principato, who joins us to discuss the intersection between aviation and policy. Greg shares his thoughts on how the industry can attract talented young people to pursue careers in aviation politics and policy over lucrative tech jobs. We ask Principato if he believes aviation should be more or less regulated, and finally, Greg shares what the DC natives are talking about it.
Principato became the 32nd President and Chief Executive Officer of the National Aeronautic Association on October 20, 2016. Prior to arriving at NAA, Principato served as President and CEO of the National Association of State Aviation Officials (NASAO) from 2014 to 2016. He also served as President of Airports Council International, North America (ACI-NA) from 2005 until 2013. He oversaw the leading association of airports and airport-related businesses in North America and the largest of the five worldwide regions of Airports Council International. He has worked on aviation and transportation policy issues for more than 30 years, beginning on the staffs of U.S. Senators J. Bennett Johnson and Joseph R. Biden, Jr. After leaving the Senate, he worked for Virginia Governor Gerald L. Baliles, who was nationally known for a commitment to transportation infrastructure and who spearheaded the creation of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority.

In 1993, he was the Executive Director of the 15-member National Commission to Ensure a Competitive Airline Industry, a commission set up by the Clinton Administration to examine ways to revive the aviation industry. The Commission tackled issues such as air traffic control reform, capacity enhancement, federal funding, international air service rights, and foreign investment. He also served on the Secure Borders and Open Doors Advisory Commission during the George W. Bush Administration.

<description>Did you go to Sun 'n Fun? What goes into a Blue Angels performance? Why is there still an aviation mechanic shortage, and how can we fix it? Do you really need to be a pilot to be FAA Administrator? This week on Uplink, we dive into ALL this. Also, Shaesta and Michael discuss the recent kerfuffle in the search for a new FAA Administrator after President Biden’s pick to head the FAA, Phil Washington, withdrew his nomination. We have some ideas about who the next pick might be.
Our guest this week is Jonas Murby, who joins us to discuss the aviation mechanic shortage. He is a Principal at AeroDynamic Advisory. a specialty consulting firm focused on the global aerospace and aviation industries. He has 17 years of experience, including more than 50 consulting engagements for leading aviation and aerospace companies across the globe. Previously, Jonas founded Merxcell, a boutique consultancy focusing on industrial marketing in the aerospace sector. Earlier, Jonas was a Principal with ICF (formerly AeroStrategy) in the United States, where he assisted a global set of MROs, OEMs, and investors with market analysis, market strategy, transaction support, and customer satisfaction.

<description>In this episode of Uplink: The Big Story, we take a deep dive into the turbulent affair of the blocked merger between JetBlue Airways Corp. and Spirit Airlines Inc. This major development in the airline industry comes after a federal judge halted the $3.8 billion deal on antitrust grounds, leaving both airlines facing a future filled with uncertainties.
The Grounded Deal: We start by exploring the judge’s decision to block the merger and its implications. This ruling is not just a setback for the airlines involved but marks a significant shift in the airline industry's landscape.
JetBlue's Challenges: Focusing on JetBlue, we discuss the impact of this decision on the airline, particularly as incoming CEO Joanna Geraghty prepares to take the helm. We dissect the strategic complications JetBlue faces, now having to find alternative paths for growth and expansion.
Spirit's Struggle: Turning to Spirit Airlines, we examine the consequences of the failed merger. With its stock plunging and the threat of bankruptcy looming, we delve into the potential future for Spirit as a standalone company and the broader implications for low-cost carriers.
Antitrust Laws in Focus: Central to our discussion is the Clayton Act, which played a pivotal role in blocking the merger. We analyze how this 109-year-old statute continues to shape the competitive landscape of the airline industry, emphasizing the protection of consumer interests and market competition.
Market Reactions and Legal Precedents: We explore the immediate market reactions to the ruling, notably JetBlue's brief stock surge and Spirit's sharp decline, and discuss what this precedent-setting decision means for future airline mergers and acquisitions.
Looking Ahead: Finally, we speculate on the future strategies for JetBlue and Spirit. How will these airlines navigate the challenges ahead? What does this mean for the everyday traveler and the competitive landscape of the airline industry?
Join us in this episode as we navigate the complex and often turbulent skies of the aviation industry, where corporate ambitions, legal battles, and consumer interests collide. Uplink: The Big Story is where we unravel the intricacies of aviation's most compelling narratives.

<itunes:subtitle>Why Are Pilots Hiding Their Mental Health Issues? – In this episode of Uplink, we confront a pressing and often hidden issue in aviation: the mental health of pilots. The recent arrest of off-duty Alaska Airlines pilot Joseph Emerson, who attempted to shut down an aircraft's engines midflight, serves as a startling wake-up call to the aviation industry. This incident, coupled with the National Transportation Safety Board's (NTSB) summit on mental health in aviation, highlights a concerning trend among pilots to conceal their mental health struggles.

We are joined by Dr. William "Billy" Hoffman, a renowned neurologist and aeromedical researcher who sheds light on why pilots often delay seeking medical care and the implications of this behavior for public safety. Dr. Hoffman, an assistant professor of aerospace at the University of North Dakota, brings a wealth of experience from studying over 5,000 pilots and his prominent media appearances discussing pilot health.

In this episode, we delve into the reasons behind pilots' reluctance to disclose mental health issues, the potential risks this poses to aviation safety, and the steps that can be taken to address this silent crisis. We also discuss the broader impact on the public's perception of flight safety and the future of aviation health protocols. Welcome to Uplink – the aviation dialogue starts here.
