Having survived the secondary airlock, Raynor, Freed and Chambers managed to save Stevens and access the Crichton, a much smaller ice mining ship docked on the massive derelict. But it contains its own enigmas, ones that point to the reality that this is no ice miner ship, and that the information they've been given about what is going on may have been all wrong. With the atmosphere burn beginning to destroy the Crichton, they must find a way to open the derelict's airlock doors and finally reach its interior...but the presence of a mysterious, dangerous prisoner in the cargo bay threatens to up end loyalties and risk the mission entirely.

After the explosion of their UEG escort ship strands them inside the derelict vessel, Raynor, Freed, and Chambers must figure out how to escape the airlock they've ended up in and enter into the ship itself. However, with damage from the atmosphere burn the giant ship is continually rolling into piling up, and the absence of ISD Agent Blayne, they may be forced to make a horrible choice: sacrifice one of their own...to save themselves.

With the true horror of the Vault’s contents now revealed, the lone survivors must reach the decrepit platform of Fathom South, their one chance at contacting the surface, not just for a rescue, but to contain the dangerous technological contagion that is quickly spreading through what remains of the underwater base. Agent Blayne and Sarah Klayton have survived their ordeal on Fathom North...only to be stranded, yet again, on the ocean bottom, by a strange, violent water displacement. Something has been found at the bottom of Earth's ocean. An ancient artifact that can only be described as a giant door, inset into the ocean floor. 

It became known as the Vault. A gigantic enigma, buried and forgotten...nineteen thousand feet down.

Just the kind of thing that would interest the galaxy's most powerful corporation, Maas-Dorian. To study the artifact, the company built a massive, self-contained, secret laboratory base surrounding it. That base is named Fathom. It's objective: unlock the secrets of the artifact and discover what it holds.​

A group of scientists, engineers, and workers led by Dr. Eva Graff and Commander Joe Freeman have been working on that task for almost a year, but with little to show for it. The Vault has yet to give up its secrets, and their employers are beginning to lose patience. Add to that, some on the base say they hear...voices. Inside the signal the Vault is broadcasting. Hundreds of them. Thousands. Whispering and chittering of a desire to be let out...

But none of it holds sway over a corporation interested only in power and profit, even if it knows all too well that some mysteries should remain buried. And that some doors should never be opened...
