A tale of two Sensei

Inspiration is an important aspect of training, as is discipline and repetition of fundamentals etc.

Our host shares some of his personal sources of inspiration in the form of different Sensei and individuals who have positively impacted his journey thus far.

Today he presents two very different Sensei, both of whom never crossed paths but still inspire a deep connection to Martial Arts as both a creative and progressive practice, whilst staying firmly rooted in the tradition and custom of their chosen styles.

Sal Belahi Sensei, a practitioner who's personal approach embodies the idea of embracing modern scientific training practises and modes of moving from the core, embracing mobility and utility as goals with a healthy sense of experimentation and "play" to strengthen his approach to Karate & Kobudo.

Teruo Chinen Sensei, Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate Master, learning from the source and spreading the style across the globe whilst creating his very distinctive interpretation of Goju Ryu over the many decades until his passing in 2015. His almost mathematical precision and ability was added to by his creative approach to his own training and teaching, and in turn set a bar of quality for the rest to live up to.

Shai Hai Sensei has had the kind of Karate journey that would make an incredible movie. From growing up in survival mode and making life and death choices at an age when most were busy being care free children.

To finding Martial Arts and following that path to a completely different country and culture to pursue his love of Karate, then travelling to Okinawa to seek permission to train with one of the most famous Karate Sensei in the world, a Sensei people refer to as an “Okinawan Superman.”

After a time being accepted but having to prove his sincerity by taking off his black belt and beginning again, and coming to realise that the path was hard and many times discouraging, but continuing anyway.

His story is inspiring, his deep respect for his Sensei and those who have guided his path is obvious, his humility is only matched by his skill and tenacity.

He is many things a Husband, Father, a Sensei in his own right. He is also a critically acclaimed actor, much like everything he does he finds Uechi Ryu Karate has applications in more ways than Martial.

I was lucky enough to meet with Yagi Isao Kancho Kancho of Motoburyu, a master of many arts and weapons techniques many that pre-date what many think of as Karate.

I never trained with him, I never learnt any of his art but meeting him was an honour that I will treasure.

My deepest respects to his Family and Students on his recent passing.

"Mana" a manifestation of the Warrior Spirit

'Mana' is a Polynesian term that loosely translated is "spiritual power" and is often applied to a personage of great integrity and standing, but when applied to a teacher means more than can be put into words. I don't often speak at length on my own culture, but on reflecting on the many incredible teachers it has been my honour to know over the years my mind came to rest on the Mr.Mita Mohi, a master of the arts and the redemption of generations of young indigenous Men, like myself. I do refer to the wonderful photo I am using of Mr.Toi Hadfield for this episode, which was taken by the incredibly talented Te Rāwhitiroa Bosch, both the subject and the photographer deserve their own Biographical Movies quite honestly, so I will put links to them as individuals at the end off this introduction.
