Diiamond’s buzz began in 2016 with her freestyle atop Drake’s “Summer Sixteen” before a menacing 2021 rendition of DaBaby’s “Ball If I Want To” sparked a viral flame. Since signing to Def Jam in Oct of 2022 Connie has catapulted her underdog status to rap mainstay all while staying true to her humble roots. She fell in love with Missy Elliot’s swagger, Nicki Minaj’s lyrical expertise, Patty Labelle’s soul, and Aretha Franklin’s range. However, Billy didn’t begin pursuing music until 2015. Over the next few years Billy B collaborated with various artists and producers; 808 Mafia, June The Jenius, Dizzy Banko, Nico Demi, Synesthetic Nation, Sukihana , Fetty Luciano Connie Diiamond , and Skeme. But it was her breakout feature with fellow raptress Lola Brooke on the hit-song "Don't play with it” that recently cracked Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart that showed the world that the women in hip hop is definitely taking over.

In this interview we discuss her upbringing, her musical influences, camaraderie amongst female rappers, sexism and misogyny in hip hop, raising a son, her family and men in her dm’s plus more!

In 2020, Jade contributed to Soul of a Nation, a groundbreaking six-part series exploring Black history and heritage in America. A student of the game, Jade is currently developing an independent documentary exploring women in hip hop.

Jade is a proud graduate of Hampton University and Columbia University School of Journalism. Misa Hylton has always been a prevalent, yet private presence in Hip Hop. Now, with nearly three decades of influence under her belt, the legendary fashion stylist is ready to reveal the wild ride that is her life story and legendary career.

In our Women in Hip Hop segment hosted by Jazzie Belle, Hylton details the organic beginnings of her career; being ushered into the industry through her relationship with then-boyfriend Sean “Puffy” Combs, who was still a rising A&R at the time she was just getting her feet wet in fashion styling. Being in “the right place at the right time” garnered her opportunities to dress artists like Jodeci, Mary J. Blige, and Lil Kim, and connected her with late music mogul Andre Harrell, who pushed her to prove her passion and build belief in her innovative style decisions.

Despite her early rise to success, Hylton reveals that there were definitely challenges she had to overcome as a woman in the industry. Namely, starting so young in the industry (only 17 years old at the time of her first gigs) and thus learning the ins and outs of entrepreneurship and financial management as she went along, and facing marginalization as a “hip hop stylist” among her high-fashion peers.

We also discussed her long lasting relationship with the rapper Tupac Shakur and how she was there during his last days in the hospital leading to his death and how his sister called her to tell her Tupac was dead.
