6S, ep. 14: NYC stand-up comedian, Kendall Davis, learns improv live on the show.

Thrilled to do another edition a series we started in the summer, 6S: Some Suggestions Sometimes Summer School Series, even though it's now the dead of winter and we're all snowed-in. Each week this past summer, on @NoSuggestionPod, we'd have on a performer, usually a comedian, with very little long-form improv experience. Me, and a few of past No Suggestion guests, all seasoned improv comedians, will give that guest a private improv class live on the show.

Revisiting this series we brought on NYC stand-up comedian, actor, the lovely Kendall Davis (@hahakendalldavis). Me, co-host Christopher Morucci (@christophermorucci), who is a frequent collaborator of Kendall's, and wonderful guest co-host, the bodacious Heather Harrison (@heatherhahs), had a great time hanging with Kendall, who admittedly is very nervous about improv. We learned about how Kendall got into stand up, about moving to NYC in the pandemic from DC, some of the typical experience of female comics, being inspired by early SNL and Michelle Buteau, and more!

Kendall had such a natural intuition to play so simply, and earnestly so it was fun to dive into improv scenes with her. We get a good amount of scenes in and get to talk about some good improv comedy fundamentals. There's some funny stuff, and some good stuff to learn from.

We know you'll be as charmed by Kendall as we were, and you'll get to learn along with her as she trepidatiously wades into the waters of improv. Check it out!

Co-host Christopher Morucci (@christophermorucci), and I, really enjoyed getting to know Greg, who was spoke with candor, generosity, and wit, as he's reflected on his journey so far. Greg shares his story of coming to New York after graduating college to pursue love, the fascinating University where he studied , how he found his way to comedy, the early days of the Magnet theater, and what he's learned about love thus far.

We also got some really funny, lovely, and truthful improv scenes in, including a scene the follows a town meeting completely charmed by one guy. What a journey we took on @nosuggestionpod this week with the erudite, and soulful, comedian, actor, musician, linguaphile, Texan, and comedian, Robert Price (@robert0price). Beloved guest co-host, Jake Joseph (@f00lish_b0y), and I went through such a reverie through Robert's cavernous mind for things to talk about, and in there we found treasures like Fibber McGee and Molly radio plays, ravines, Lutheran church hymns, vanishing points, Gandolf, and more.

We also did a did a heap of incredibly silly, and detail rich improv scenes, including a parlay between two dark ages kingdoms about to go to war seemingly over sausage. We had such a time chatting and playing with Robert. He was so funny, and so generous with his knowledge of language, poetry, and culture that might be forgotten or under-appreciated.

We at @NoSuggestionpod have been hoping for so long to snag this guest, and this week we finally got the great and elusive, actor, television writer, Jersey boy, and sketch and improv comedian, Mike Poole (@thisismikepoole) on the show! Co-host Aston Hollins (@astonhollins) and I got to get to learn some of the lore behind Mike on this episode and it was so fun. We chatted about not being a junior, playing lacrosse at a majority black South Jersey high school, loving snarky VH1 shows growing up, improv being the pick up basketball of comedy, writing for The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, and The Amber Ruffin Show , and more!

We also get into some terrific, hilarious improv scenes with Mike, including a scene about a high-school cool kid who wants more out of life. A blessed time getting to know the charismatic actor, clown, jazz trumpeter, only child, and improvisor, Kento Morita (@kento.nyc) this week on ⁠@nosuggestionpod⁠. Co-host Aston Holins (@astonhollins), and I, had a blast getting squirrelly with Kento, chatting about Happy Days, how Kento got three full time jobs in the pandemic, X-Men, almost failing out of NYU, and ADHD take home tests.

It's a party this week as a we end our 6S summer series with the fun-loving and sharp-witted actor, stand-up and sketch comedian, choir singer, Detroit-native, and dog-walker, Connor Meade (@connormeadian)! Co-host Christopher Morucci (@christophermorucci), and guest co-host, the esteemed Chris Griggs (@chrisgriggscomedy), and I have a ball hanging with Connor. We chat about Connor's first year in NY being the worst year of her life, starting comedy with Planet Ant (@planetantdet) in Detroit, how her mom won a pyramid scheme, books for boys, comedians in dramatic acting and more.

Connor has almost no improv experience and is such a natural at improv and we get into so many silly scenes. We play and laugh a lot in this episode, and hand a wonderful hang. As we near the closing of summer, I was thrilled to pause our very successful "6S" series for a bit to just have an end-of-summer hang with some of my favorite #NoSuggesstionPod alums. Had a chill, convivial, silly, healing hour hanging with Kristin Kirkley (@captainkirkley), Josh Hurley (@joshhurley), Philip Casale (@phil_casale), and Raquel Palmas (@rockwell826) this week. We chat about everything from the craft beer hustle, to meditation, to Elizabeth Gilbert, to community building.

We also get a lot of really silly, and gorgeous improv in, including a scene about Jesus and his bros troubleshooting problems with the early church. This episode was really a gift, these are some friends and comedians I really love, and it's just a big love fest, and a return to something closer to our more traditional format.

So thrilled to have actor, podcaster, show producer, husband, cat-dad, karaoke enthusiast, and one of my favorite comics in town, Casey Jay Salengo (@caseyjsalengo) on the show to take an improv class from us this week. Co-host Christpher Morucci (@christophermorucci), and guest co-host Kevin Karpinski (@playwelltogether33), and I, go on a romp this week getting to know, and trying to tame, the giddy bronco that is Casey. We get to chat with him about why you can't be a stan for a man, how stand-up comedians are basically pirates, the fact that Casey's wife, Courtney (@courtmaginnis) would prefer him to be a normal functioning human, and much more.

We do a lot of improv on the episode, and Casey does a wonderful job. and we really get to dig into improv technique and what makes scenes work. we also get to really have some true comedy nerd conversation about comedy theory, and career, and it's super satisfying.

Casey truly is one of the city's best stand-up's, and he announces on this episode he's taking over as one of the producers on Live From Outer Space (@lfoscomedy), one of NYC's longest running stand-up comedy shows at Cobra Club (@cobraclubbk) in Bushwick. This week we are delighted to be joined by clown, filmmaker, and actor, Madeleine Joyce (@madjoymadjoy). Co-hosts Aston Hollins (@astonhollins), Christopher Morucci (@christophermorucci), and guest co-host Hannah Marias (@hannah_marias), and I have a giddy, mind-bending time trying to keep up with Joyce's fantastical mind. We got to chat about how being unhappy as an actor and as a person brought Madeleine to clown, taking care of the audience in clown vs improv, trying to take control and being the leader, logic limbo, where we would live if we weren't pursuing our dreams in NYC, what its like for Madeleine working as an assistant director on film sets, and more!

We also really find a fun rhythm giving Madeleine her first improv class. We do quite a few scenes, and get to really dissect what worked and how they worked, and we try a few of them again. There's lots of laughing, and lots of discovering.

Madeleine is so creative, and original, and by her own admission, weird, so this is a very dynamic and fun episode. Madeleine really is generous, and present, and we have a great time getting to know her on this episode. We know you'll find getting to know her as beguiling and as enchanting as we did. Tune in!

It's a cypher in the studio this week as we welcome rapper, educator, and founder of Freestyle Fitness, BS (@trustbs)! Co-host Christopher Morucci (@christophermorucci), and guest co-host, Mark Melton (@swugmark), and I get to chat with BS about how he teaches people how to rap, the difference between short-form and long-form improv, comparing improv scenes to songs, and how Freestyle Fitness (@freestylefitnessnyc) employs cohort based learning.

We also get to do a few improv scenes with BS. We really get to dissect each scene, and we also try to employ a few notes, trying some scenes over again after getting adjustments. There's some great gems in this episode about improv, comedy in general, and the parallels between improv and rapping.

This week we were honored to have one of the sharpest comedians around on the show, stand-up comedian, and writer, Crenshaw White (@crenshawkindafunny)! Co-host Aston Hollins (@astonhollins), and guest co-host, Slaney Rose Jordan (@slaneyrose), really had a good time getting to know Crenshaw and giving him a proper improv lesson. This week we chat with Crenshaw about improv being stand-up's mortal enemy, Whataburger, what it was like for Crenshaw to be raised in LA and go to college in New Orleans, and surface-level vulnerability.

We also got in a couple really fun improv scenes with Crenshaw, we got to give some fun notes, and then try them on in the scenes. We really give you your money's worth in this episode with not only some great improv gems, but some wonderful musings on how comedy works.

This week we have such a lively hour with mime, actor, educator, and founder of Broken Box Mime Theater (@brokenboxmime) and PhysFest NYC (@physfestnyc), Becky Baumwoll . Co-host Christopher Morucci (@christophermorucci), and guest co-host Shawn Wickens (@timetravelingstoned), and I, really enjoyed getting to know Becky, and chat with Becky about the origins of Broken Box Mime Company, how she landed in mime and acting from being an International Studies major, whether or not mimes are allowed to laugh or break in their performances, the internet trend of following endless spooky underground catacombs that may or may not be AI, and more!

We get through a lot of improv scenes, with Becky, who has only a little improv experience. It's really fun to track Becky's blossoming improv skills over this unruly, squirrelly hour. Christopher and Shawn really get to drop some cool gems about improv, and we get to learn something about how the art-forms of improv and mime might interact.

Broken Box Mime has been doing gorgeous, elegant, and often hilarious, physical storytelling and theater in this city for almost 15 years, under Becky's leadership. It is a real get to have her on the show, get to know her a bit, and to get to play with her. We hope you are as lit up and set abuzz by this unpredictable episode as we were!

Our special guest this week is stand-up comic Geneva Rust-Orta. Geneva does stand up all over the city and puts up so many of her own shows and open mics. She is fresh off taping her first stand-up hour which will be dropping in a few weeks.

Guest co-hosts Matty Tuzynski (@mall_kitty), April Sickler (@asickler), and I had such a fun time giving Geneva her first real improv class. We got to chat with Geneva about her paranoia that everyone hates her, her unique upbringing, why she needs to smile in her comedy, and her love of My Cousin Vinny. Between these fun convos we found some terrific improv scenes with Geneva, and really dissected what worked and didn't work. This episode is low-key but so smart, and fun, and full of gems.

I'm really jazzed about this summer series, getting to swap ideas with different varieties of comedians about the common values and differences within our disciplines. We're learning a lot. Hello! This week with our wonderful guests Max and Nicky Weinbach (@maxandnicky), we continue our new summer project, 6S: Some Suggestions Sometimes Summer School Series. Each week, on this #NoSuggestionPod series, we'll have on a performer, usually a comedian, with very little long-form improv experience. A few of past No Suggestion guests, all seasoned improv comedians, and I, will give that guest a private improv class live on the show.

Co-hosts Christopher Morucci (@christophermorucci), Anthony Brophy (@anthonybroph), and I, had a fantastic time with twins Max and Nicky, on this episode. We get a bunch of improv scenes in, and use those scenes to work on some different improv skills, like playing patterns, and playing with emotion. Hello! This week we continue our new summer series on #NoSuggestionPod, 6S: Some Suggestions Sometimes Summer School Series. Each week in this series we'll have on a performer, usually a comedian, with very little long-form improv experience, and some seasoned past No Suggestion guests, and I will give that guest a private improv class live on the show.

This week we are blessed to have witty, and sharp, NYC comedian Ethan Filler (@efiller13). Ethan has been doing stand-up in the city for almost 5 years, but has very little improv experience, and was brave enough to come play with us. I also have the honor of being joined by guest co-hosts James Quesada (@jamesqyou) of Sounds Funny Radio (@soundsfunnyradio) and the Improv Draft (@theimprovdraft), and Chris Roberti, actor and improv teacher, formerly at The PIT, currently teaching improv at Barrow Group (@thebarrowgroup) on the podcast this week. On this episode of 6S we get to a lively conversation about the nature of talent, sex parties, and more, we try a lot of improv scenes, we get to hear Ethan receive some instruction following those scenes, and then we get to hear him beautifully apply those notes.

This week on #NoSuggestionPod, we start Some Suggestions Sometimes Summer School Series, AKA 6S. All summer long I'll invite different past No Suggestion guests, all of whom are some of the best improvisors, and improv teachers, in NYC, to give a stand-up comedian, clown, or other miscellaneous NYC performer with no improv experience, a private improv lesson live on the air.

We're blessed to have our first guest be Funmilayo Adejobi, known to most as Funmi (@liluziflert). Funmi is an NYC clown who is beloved in the improv scene for her bold audacious performing, her infectious charm, and her unique story.

This week I'm joined by guest co-hosts, the great Katy Berry (@katyberrycomedy) and Mariel Grullon (@jezusthebodegacat). This is one hour of jumping into the nitty-gritty comedy theory, how improv works, and how it compares, contrasts, and compliments the art-form of clown, all in one hour. This is a big experiment, and the results vary, but we had great fun figuring this out. Enjoy this mad, interesting, experimental, and educational episode, our first episode of 6S.

Such a privilege to have a rare sighting of one of NYC's most essential Soviet creatives on #NoSuggestionPod, actor, designer, visual artist, and improv comedian, Nikolai Solonski (@pocketz888). Joined by guest co-host Rich Templeton (@richhunttemp), we get to chat with Nikolai about some fascinating topics, and both present us with a great surprise at the end of the podcast. We chat with Nikolai about philosophies of rest and energy for performers, we break down the concept of "dumbing it down", seeing everyday objects in a new light, using unrealized ideas from improv scenes as inspiration for art, what Nikolai makes of the changes that have taken place in his homeland, .

Also Nikolai and Rich both, unprompted brought their beautiful visual artwork to the studio and share it with us! I try to describe them on the air, and I'll share the images here and on my instagram.

On top of all that, we all get some really inspired improv comedy scenes off in this episode, including a scene where we catch up with an ornery but respected pro-golfer in the most important tournament of their career. I think truly one of the best improvisors in the city, and he's been a dream guest for while, actor and comedian Nick Carrillo (@nickcarrillo77) joins us on #NoSuggestionPod this week. Co-host Christopher Morucci (@christophermorucci) and I learned a lot getting to know Nick at Radio Free Brooklyn studios this week. We got to chat with Nick about his incredible tenure on house teams at The People's Improv Theater (@thepitnyc) in the 2010's, how a leading role in a three year off-Broadway run of a hit play came out of that tenure, why his college in Santa Fe doesn't exist anymore, UIL competitive theater, doing comedy bits as a five year old, and more.

We also find some incredibly interesting characters and worlds in some really beautifully unique and funny improv scenes this week, including a scene that follows three survivors of a gnarly plane crash. I feel we found a way of playing this episode that is special for No Suggestion. This episode is super-charged and cracking with energy. It finally happened.

The man who at the top of my list wish-list of possible guests on #NoSuggestionPod when we started, actor, entrepreneur, care-taker, former SNL staff-writer, teacher, the proprietor of Pioneers Bar (@pioneersbar), founder of the People's Improv Theater (@thepitnyc), and comedian, Ali Farahnakian (@alialinyc) is our guest this week. Co-host Aston-Hollins McClanahan (@astonhollins), and I, had the privilege of spending an hour with this sage, ridiculous, and fascinating man. We talk with Ali about gratitude, saying yes, how he almost didn't make it to record the podcast, how he had to surrender five business to the pandemic, improv as yoga, the SNL 25th anniversary show, how the PIT was founded in the shadow of 9/11, and more.

We also have so much fun doing improv with Ali, including a scene about a volatile corporate CEO learning to control his temper. This is a wild week on #NoSuggestionPod! We were so happy to have guest, actor, teacher, and comedian, Elke Reid (@elketv) back on the podcast. But then Elke leaves to go to the bathroom, and doesn't come back, and then serendipitously, out of nowhere Elke's buddy, raconteur, philosopher, and unofficial bodega delegate, Morty Saperstein shows up and takes Elke's place for the rest of the episode.

Co-host Aston Hollins (@astonhollins) and I chat with Elke about how much she's been traveling, and teaching improv. We chat with Morty about getting catfished by his landlady, and bodega breakfasts. It's bit of an unconventional episode, but we have a ball!

Our last episode before a little hiatus for the summer, we're so glad to end this season of #NoSuggestionPod with a big bang! This week's guest is the exuberant, vivacious, bold, and bright actor, teacher, and improv comedian, Kim Alu (@alu_who)! Co-host Aston Hollins (@astonhollins) and I hanker down for a good ol' chat sesh with Kim and we end up chatting about her being nearly Illuminati, how Cream Ridge, New Jersey got its name, tall tales, the rise and fall of Julia Fox, Kim's deep passion for improv comedy, and we share our real feelings about Dallas, TX.

In this episode we also charge full speed into a bunch of improv scenes that turned out to be super fun and super funny, including a scene about a group of depleted teachers desperately grasping for inspiration and motivation to teach. Co-host Aston Hollins (@astonhollins) makes her triumphant return this week as we chat with Tallie in Radio Free Brooklyn studios about how I was sure she was Jewish and she isn't, going to concerts and festivals, leaving Alaska to go to Emerson college in Boston, why studying Theater Education over joining an acting conservatory was ultimately the right move for her, the inception of the beloved dance trio Tallie is part of, Cocoon Central Dance Team (@cocooncentraldanceteam), the clown program she's spearheading at Brooklyn Comedy Collective (@comedybrooklyn), and Tallie shares the experience of being in the all-encompassing runaway-train known as Everything Everywhere All At Once.

Amidst this groovy, winding conversation we also got some trippy, giddy improv scenes in, including scene about a brassy new CIA agent at orientation their first day on the job. Such an honor and privilege to have 1/3 of one of the best improv teams in the city, Branded Silk (@brandedsilk), on #NoSuggestionPod, actress, singer, producer, and improv comedian, Onyi Okoli (@onyiokoli)! Jake Joseph (@f00lish_b0y) and I had such a wonderful time with Onyi at Radio Free Brooklyn studios chatting about being a raw vegan, forbidden stories of being a property manager, how being a comedian and having a day job affects your circadian rhythm, the culture shock of moving from predominately black Baltimore to go to USC for theater and how that led Onyi to produce and direct shows for black students while there, growing up with a Nigerian dad and an African American mom, and more!

We also got some wildly ridiculous improv scenes this week, including a scene about an unassuming parking lot attendant trying to validate the parking of a very sexually charged pair on a first date. I laughed so hard recording this episode, ya'll!

Thrilled to start 2024 with this episode! This week's guests are actor, teacher, philosopher, cannabis advocate, and comedian Shawn Wickens (@timetravelingstoned), back for the third time, and explorer and musician Zarif (@spaceroyz). Co-host Aston Hollins (@astonhollins) and I had such a deeply enjoyable hang at Radio Free Brooklyn studios with these two na'er do-wells. The four of us talked about Interstellar vs The Martian, the lazy bohemian lifestyle, Jane Goodall, Jamiroquai vs Aphex Twin, Zarif describes his style of music which he calls "Ocean music", Shawn gives his definition of jazz, Aston shares about her end of the year blues, and we all sing Prince's Seven together.

As if all these good natured hijinks weren't enough, we still managed to get into plenty super silly improv scenes including a scene about a very relaxed and laidback crew of space explorers. This episode really delighted me, and I'm so thankful it's our first episode of the year. Shawn and I have known each other nearly a decade and we have worked a lot with Zarif, I couldn't have thought of a better set of guests to kick the year off with. What a beautiful, luxurious, elegant salon we had with on #NoSuggestionPod this week with playwright, LGBTQ activist, actress, and comedian, Meg (@phallicmother)!

Co-host Jake Joseph (@f00lish_b0y) and I got to spend a lovely hour at Radio Free Brooklyn studios hanging with my old friend Meg this week, and we got to chat about the deeper meaning of mock duck, God's vibe, high value platform shoes, accessibility vs inaccessibility in art, how transitioning affected Meg's approach to art, and how hilarious trans life can be.

Amidst all this regalia we also got in some super funny improv scenes, including a scene where a team of homicide detectives on a grieve how tragically plain and boring their suspect is.

It was so nice to spend time with my friend Meg, hear about the exciting things she's up to, the things that are important to her life right now, and laugh together about how absurd it all is. This week's episode of #NoSuggestionPod is a free-for-all! We had a wild, delightfully unhinged time with our guests, clown comedy duo Shoshana Rubin-Mann (@shoshanashoshanashoshanashosha) and Riley Stanzione (@rileystanz)! Me and co-host Aston Hollins (@astonhollins) have our work cut out for us trying to tame this wild pair as we gab about topics as far ranging as sounds, popsicle binges at the Celebration Barn, the liberation offered in musical improv, Mr. Bean, Shoshana's failed turtle neck protest.

The show is so action packed with music, Shoshana's numb toes are saved by Rileys lined crocs, and the duo tell us about their upcoming show at the Magnet Theater on January 12th, Shoshana and Riley's Laundromat! As if this episode isn't kooky enough, we also get in a gaggle of silly improv scenes starting with a scene about a spaceship captain desperate for moment to complete his vital daily captain's log.

This week we had a member of one the funniest indie improv teams in the city, Branded Silk (@brandedsilk), actor, rapper, musician, comedy writer, stand-up and improv comedian, the elusive Aaron LaRoche (@hersheylickings)! I've been trying to get the members of Branded Silk on this podcast for a long time, and Aaron is the first one I managed to get.

Aaron is such a smooth, thoughtful, laidback, brilliant cat, and this session at Radio Free Brooklyn Studios, did not disappoint. Jake Joseph (@f00lish_b0y) and I had a great time chatting with Aaron about how his team Branded Silk came together, how doo rags are used, growing up in North Hampton, self-sabotage, Rizz, Aaron talks about what it's like to have been with one therapist for more than a decade, the name Topanga, each wave of NYC hipsters.

Such a pleasure to have my friend, and former indie improv team teammate, actor, sketch and improv comedian Matt Hammond (@matthammondyo) on #NoSuggestionPod this week! We were blessed this week to have the angel of positivity that is actor, stage combat choreographer, essayist, mental health advocate, improv comedian, and all around good-egg, Michael Serpe (@badcaseofserpes) on #NoSuggestionPod this week! We chat with Michael about toiling in the community theater mines as a youth, the difference between something therapeutic and therapy, how much humans crave story, looking for connection in the world as a young introvert, serious high-school method acting, how Michael got into choreographing stage combat, and the reason he punched a friend one time.

Co-host Jake Joseph (@f00lish_b0y) and I were so charmed by Michael's kind and optimistic POV, heart for community, particularly the community that makes You Are Not Alone (@youarenotalonecomedy), the monthly mental health monthly comedy show Michael has been making with his friends and performing in at the Magnet for nearly a decade.

We also squeezed in some more silly than normal improv scenes, including a scene about some cocky youths waiting an exorbitant amount of time for their turn on the playground basketball court.

A great honor to have actor, teacher, father, stand-up and improv comedian, Matt Higgins (@matthigginsnyc) on #NoSuggestionPod this week. My North Coast (@northcoastnyc) teammate, one of the most beloved improvisors in the NYC scene, actor, poet, administrative director, freestyle rapper, teacher, and improv comedian Billy Soco (@bsoco) is our guest this week on #NoSuggestionPod. Co-host Jake Joseph (@f00lish_b0y) and I had such a good time with Billy at Radio Free Brooklyn (@radiofreebk) Studios hanging with Billy. I immediately accosted him about his mysteriousness, and that led to such a freewheeling, adventurous, engaged conversation. We talked with Billy about spoken-word poetry, introversion vs extroversion, journaling, Dave Coulier, his day-job as a healthcare administrator, what draws him to art, and hurricane season.

We also get tons of improv comedy scenes in this episode, including a sweet and ridiculous scene about the faculty running a high school talent show getting mixed-up and turned-around trying to make a shy student comfortable enough to come out and perform. Had such a chill hang at Radio Free Brooklyn (@radiofreebk) Studios this week with actor, singer, marathoner, and improv comedian Claire Shiell (@claireshiell). Guest co-host Aston Hollins (@astonhollins) and I sat down and just shot the breeze with Claire for an hour and we had such a fun time! We chatted about the last time we each cried, getting cut from theater school, training for ultra-marathons, acting cubes, and we challenge one another to look the coolest and most unbothered. It was just us gals gabbing it up for an hour and it was such a blast!

We also got some super funny improv scenes in, including a scene about an unsettlingly cool job interviewee. Claire is one of the city's most prolific improvisors, playing regularly at places like The PIT (@thepitnyc), the Armory (@thearmorycomedy), and Young Ethel's (@youngethels), so it's a real honor to have her on. It's such a revealing and sincere conversation, I'm really honored to share it with you.

Phillip and I chatted about all kinds of topics ranging from what a man is supposed to like, to aspiring to pay your rent as a comedian, to how complicated the notion of "growing up" can be as a comedian and improviser, to how we were both influenced by the movie Hook and the book How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way, to Phillip's complicated love of Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack, to human-ness, to Phillip's recent foray back into scripted on screen acting.

Along the way we get in quite a few screwy and hilarious improv scenes, including a scene about two maniacal, but unfulfilled super villains discovering friendship.

Our first return guest! No Xavier this week, but for the first time on No Suggestion, we welcome back fan favorite, actor, comedy writer, and improv comedian, Rich Templeton (@richhunttemp)! This is actually an earnest, thoughtful, and vulnerable conversation that winds in an out of topics like the freeing power of performing, dealing with the parts of life that your don't understand gracefully, the temptation to want to make yourself small to accommodate others, the fear of knowing what you truly want, the difference between suppression and repression. This episode was recorded an few nights before Christmas, and it finds us in a pensive thoughtful mood.

That doesn't, however, explain how insane the improv scenes we get into are! The scenes Rich and I come up with include the misadventures of an expectant mother at a Just Salad, and two hulking wrestlers who rely on each other for emotional support. I'm going to let you know right now, don't listen to this episode on an empty stomach. There's a lot of sumptuous, mouthwatering talk about food. This week our guest was the great comedian, actor, and teacher Jay Rhoderick, who is a member of my favorite improv team of all-time, Centralia. As a matter of fact, this this show named no suggestion as an homage to Centralia who famously don't take suggestions from the audience to begin their improv shows.

We were thrilled to have Jay on, and didn't know what to expect. We ended up having a blast just talking about everything from rooms and spaces that make you want to take a dump, and healthy versus unhealthy ambition, but we really just spent a lot of this episode gushing over our favorite foods! I was so hungry after this episode!

We also got some intense and intensely funny improv scenes in, including an epic scene about an old prospector who has a fascinating relationship with a barrel. This is easily our most inspiring episode, and that's saying a lot. Joining Xavier and I in the Radio Free Brooklyn Studio's is From Justin to Kelley, AKA Countdown Theater's Justin Peters and Kelley Buttermore (@jtkimprov). They are veteran NYC improvisors who perform mostly out of town. They've cultivated a deliberate, highly collaborative approach to improv they call "improv without ideas" that they perform all over the country, as well as running their own festivals.

We talk to Justin and Kelley about how their partnership formed out of the ruins of a failed Magnet house team, how three high school students guided them to doing their first road show, playing to win versus the creation of trust, admitting that you care even though it's not cool, Xavier and I update them on the current NYC improv scene, and we meditate on choosing a life of vulnerability. We also get some super funny and committed improv scenes in, including a son avenging the death of mother who died enjoying a documentary, and two hipsters two cool to admit they are standing in the middle of a bodega on fire.

Justin and Kelley have so so so much going on, they're teaching so many workshops and making so much comedy. Follow them!

No Suggestion took the week off last week, but we're back!

Xavier and I had a blast with the bright, enthusiastic ball of light that is Hannah Marias (@hannah_marias). I know Hannah from being the former producer and manager for my improv team, North Coast. Hannah loves to remain active and involved supporting the theater and comedy scenes, but I only recently discovered what gifted improvisor she is herself. On this episode we chat about all kinds of interesting stuff, like Hannah's small pivot from entertainment to pursue her Masters in early childhood education, the niceness of Brooklynites, people taking warmth wrong, child-led play theory, and more!
