An Elegant Journey of Awakening: Learning to think in Science education

Dr Tim Dunn’s educational journey began in IT and computing, then led him on to a university career as a scientist with a PhD in cancer research and immunology. Tim was drawn into teaching when asked by friends to help out in the fledgling high school at Samford Valley Steiner School. He negotiated a release from university commitments of one afternoon per week to teach Maths, but soon found himself captivated by the quality of thinking he encountered in the high school students: a flexible, active and engaged thinking that contrasted with the fixed and formulaic thinking with which he was familiar. The one afternoon per week became a full time commitment when he left a position as Senior Lecturer at Queensland University of Technology, and became a Science teacher at the school. Tim describes the Steiner school approach to science as an “elegant journey of awakening”: one following the classic traditions of the great scientists, of clear and intense observation of phenomena following by a critical reflection that builds the concepts of Physics, Chemistry and Biology into a living whole. The process is as important as the content in helping students to not only know their subject, but also to learn to think critically and creatively.

“There is no greater joy than learning”: Memories of a Beautiful Education

In this 28th episode of Steiner Voices XYZ, it’s time to look back on some highlights. Every episode has been a highlight for me as the podcaster, remarkable for the huge breadth of voices and experiences demonstrating the rich and diverse endeavour of Steiner education.

Yet for the great diversity, there has also been a remarkable unity
and coherence of experiences, like the many polished facets on a full-cut
diamond, each reflecting the light in their own unique way. So here are
highlights from the voices of three alumni from different Steiner schools in
different parts of Australia. For all the different locations, they have common
memories of a beautiful education, a time of creativity and calm, of vivid
colours, imagination, deep trusting relationships with teachers, immersion in
nature, and most importantly, of learning that was both challenging and joyful.
Rudolf Steiner himself put it so perfectly: “there is no greater joy than
learning”

Community: Learnings from the Class 12 Major Project

Nicolai, Charlie, Marni and Finley are four students who graduated from the Willunga Waldorf School in SA at the end of 2025. In this podcast they tell of their journey with the Major Project, just one part of a very full Class 12 academic program. The projects require the students to conduct independent research, to produce a tangible, useful product, and to make a positive contribution to the wider community. While the content of each of the projects is significant, the process and personal growth the students undergo in completing them are just as significant. They share their journeys of learning and contribution, and the gains they made in confidence and awareness of self, demonstrating one of the overarching themes of Steiner education, that genuine learning is always meaningful personal growth as well.

The Rhythms of Life: Steiner Education on Five Continents, and Bondi

Diane Tatum’s long career in Steiner education has taken her around the world, from her origins on the east coast of the US, to schools in Europe, China, South America and over the past 30 years, in Australia. She trained in Eurythmy in Germany and the US, and has devoted her professional life to bringing eurythmy, drama, music, movement, and story to Steiner school classrooms and communities. Behind all these artistic forms lies the power of rhythm, and Diane’s inspiration has been to work with the healing power that healthy rhythm has on the growing child. She has worked as well on school communities through festivals which can build and nourish the social organism of a whole school. More recently she has seen the healing power of artistic rhythm as it mitigates the impacts of acute trauma in her work with Emergency Pedagogy. Diane was one of a team of Australian Steiner educators who supported survivors of the Bondi terrorist shooting last December where she experienced again the healing power of the rhythms of life.

From Nick Cave to Parzival: Steiner Education in a State High School

Ken Killeen recently retired after teaching for 20 years in the Steiner stream classes at Castlemaine Secondary College, Victoria. Ken is a professional artist with a deep vision of what Steiner education can offer to adolescents in particular, and the world in general. He tells the story of losing his faith, then finding it again as a fresh impulse which led to new initiatives including the founding of the Steiner stream. His connection with Steiner’s work from agriculture to education has spanned decades, and continues to inspire his work of carrying the students through the challenges of adolescence. He quotes Nick Cave’s advice to a seeking teenager: explore art, music, culture, and the sciences as broadly as possible and become a full human being before making the step into a particular vocation. The Parzival story underpins his own journey, from a feeling of ignorance and separation, to the bliss of sensing the numinous, the unity that underlies the material world. Ken’s message to teachers? Have reverence towards your students, gratitude for life, work together in your College of Teachers, stay fresh, and innovate!

Ready to Step into the World: A Shearwater Journey

Thea Mills-Crockford has just completed Year 12 at Shearwater, The Mullumbimby Steiner School in northern NSW. Thea gained early entry into the Australian National University, and recorded this interview on her way to Canberra where she will begin a Bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience, Psychology and Philosophy. Her time at Shearwater began at the age of 2 when her parents took her to Playgroup, and now after 16 continuous years at the school, she reflects on a journey which included so many of the rich experiences that Steiner students enjoy during their education. Each school has its own unique offerings, and Thea remembers fondly some of the special Shearwater events such as WAVE (Wearable Arts Vision in Education), a choreographed production involving high school students that encompasses design, drama, dance, music and technology. Recognising that time moves on, she is sad to say goodbye but takes with her some beautiful and nurturing memories. Perhaps most important of all, she takes with her an inner strength of character and understanding of self that helps her feel ready to step into the world.

There Must be a Bigger Picture…!”

Rosemary Michalowski began her professional journey after starting a mainstream teaching degree but asking the question: Where is the bigger picture…? She found the bigger picture she was looking for in a Steiner orientation course in Sydney. The course inspired her love of art, philosophy and meaningful education, and she was taught by Sylvia Brose, the founder of the first Steiner school in Australia. She furthered her studies in Germany where she trained in teaching and in Eurythmy whilst also working at the local Anthroposophical hospital. Returning to Australia with her family, she worked in a number of schools before being appointed Principal of the Central Coast Steiner School in NSW. Over the past 13 years, Rosemary has worked with the teachers to build a thriving school which this year is hosting its first ever Year 12 cohort, as well as starting to double stream the high school. Rosemary shares her vision of Steiner education as a rigorous pursuit where students develop a deep love of learning and where they and their families feel connected in a richly supportive community. Most of all, she wants to put joy and creativity back into education, as part of that bigger picture which started her whole journey.

Think Bigger: From Steiner Pessimist to Advocate

Here is a podcaster being podcasted! For his Class 12 Major Project, Steiner X Oskar Scarman created a podcast series called A Search for Meaning that explored the themes of meaning, purpose and vulnerability. It reached the top 15% of podcasts worldwide, and now, just two years out of school, Oskar has established a successful business in Adelaide employing 16 people. Oskar reflects on his journey through the Willunga Waldorf school, recalling fondly his time in the “magic garden” of Kindergarten, his class teacher time of imagination, deep connection and personal care, but also his middle high school years when he rebelled against so much of what his Steiner school offered. How he came through that crisis of meaning and went on to achieve great success in Class 12, including a high mark and the offer of entry to a Law degree, makes a fascinating story. Overall Oskar describes his journey as a move from being a Steiner pessimist to being an advocate. What makes the point of difference? He says, “It makes you think bigger!”

Poet, Philosopher, Story-Teller: Exploring the Power of Imagination

Steiner X Dr Luke Fisher has published nine books: five in academic philosophy, two volumes of poetry, and two books of childrens’ stories. Luke grew up in Steiner education, and inspired by vivid story-telling at both school and home, he recalls his imagination being stirred by rich imagery and the power of language. His PhD from the University of Sydney explored the link between the poetry of German poet Rilke and the philosophy of the romantic movement. Luke works as a writer and independent scholar publishing across these seemingly diverse fields. In this episode he discusses the common language of imagination that unites poetry, philosophy and story, a language that he believes takes us to the heart of human creativity. Luke is now a Steiner parent himself, and he begins this episode with a poem he wrote for his daughter as a baby exploring the wonders of her own body: On the Musical Structure of Human Nature.

A Rich World of Learning: The First Year in a Steiner School

Catherine Pilko is an experienced Kindergarten teacher in Sydney and in this podcast she shares the beautiful first year in a Steiner school that children enjoy in Kindergarten (NSW, ACT), Prep (Qld, Vic, Tas), Reception (SA), Pre-primary (WA) and Transition (NT). Catherine takes us through a typical day, showing the calm, ordered and productive routines that provide a nourishing start to the child’s life at school. It’s a rich world of learning from everyday life where English, Maths, and even Science outcomes are embedded in practical activities that build independence and personal competence. Self directed play has a central place and Catherine shares touching and amusing stories of the powerful creativity that children can demonstrate when they are allowed a safe and natural play environment. It’s all a profoundly social and character-building foundation to a child’s school journey.

Gym for the Soul: The Inner World of Eurythmy

Emily Collett teaches Eurythmy at two Steiner schools in Sydney. Her own education included a Major Project on Eurythmy in Year 12, but it after an Honours degree in International Studies at Macquarie University that she committed to a full professional Eurythmy training in Germany. Three years of performing across stages and schools internationally followed, before she returned to Australia to become a qualified teacher. Emily reflects on the new art form of Eurythmy and its powerful ability to embody the inner moods of words and music in movement and gesture. In school, students gain inner capacities of coordination, collaboration and concentration. In performance, audiences move inwardly to the beauty and artistry of the words and music as revealed by the Eurythmists on stage. In short, Emily calls it “gym for the soul”.

From Addiction to Actively Managing: Children and Screens

Mary Heard returns to Steiner Voices to discuss screens and how to protect children from the dangers of their addictive use. Although the evidence of the negative impact that screen use has on young people is well established, parents can still feel they are swimming against the tide in a society where screen use for children is so widespread. Screens have an inherently addictive quality designed into them, and Steiner schools have always advised parents to first restrict and then manage their children’s use of phones and digital devices. Mary outlines useful strategies that families take to actively manage screen use, so children can grow up using screens in a responsible and intentional manner. Mary is a long term parent in Steiner schools, and is now a parent educator working with the program Simplicity Parenting: her website has many valuable resources for further reference: maryheardsimplicityparenting.com .

The Magic of Making Things: Educating the Will

Evan Sanders is Design and Technology teacher at Glenaeon Rudolf Steiner School in Sydney. He teaches the artisan subjects where students produce useful and beautiful objects which are so emblematic of Steiner schools. A former Steiner student himself, he values the learning that goes into working with the many different materials in the Steiner curriculum at different ages, from wool, textiles and clay in primary school to wood, metal, glass, stone and more in high school. For Evan, making things is not just about making things. It is also a parable about human development, human resilience and human creativity. When a student makes a useful and beautiful object, they are also making themselves.

Steiner in the Centre: “The feeling, the aesthetics, the calm”

Megan Hatton has lived and worked in Central Australia for nearly 30 years, becoming fluent in Pitjantjatjara language and teaching in a bilingual school in an Aboriginal community 250 kilometres west of Alice Springs. On moving “to town” with a baby, she began teaching in all the schools of Alice Springs, and was finally drawn to the Alice Springs Steiner school as a parent and teacher for a number of reasons which she summarises as “the feeling, the aesthetics, the calm”. Megan trained in Steiner education and has completed two cycles as a class teacher before stepping up to a leadership role in the school. She tells her story of being drawn to the Centre after growing up in the suburbs of Sydney and travelling the world. Now, having experienced the powerful healing influence that Steiner education can be in the classroom, she looks forward to exploring the role she can play in helping heal trauma more widely, and particularly the intergenerational trauma in her local community.

Pioneering Parents: “Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained!”

What do you do when your eldest daughter comes home at the end of Year 4 and says “I’m not going back!” Bill Wood was training teachers as a Lecturer in the Philosophy of Education when he faced this situation. He and wife Rosemary explored the options and they took a risk in enrolling daughter Joanna in one of the early classes at Mt Barker Waldorf School, a class that became the pioneering class of the high school. It was a risk, but they took the view “Nothing ventured, nothing gained”. So Joanna was in the first class to complete the high school, went on to graduate in Medicine with Honours and is today an Emergency Physician, with her own three children attending the school. In this episode Bill tells this family story and how he was impressed with the way narrative and music combined with main lesson content to create a coherent and rigorous learning environment for a very able child.

Music of the Spheres: From Perth to Bali and Beyond

Paul Lawrence is an Australian teacher and musician who for the past three years has been an educational leader of the Madu Waldorf School in Ubud, Bali. But Paul’s connection with Bali started a long time before this appointment. He tells a fascinating story that begins with his first life changing experience as a fifteen year old when he encountered Balinese culture for the first time. His life since then has been bound up with both Bali and with music. As a Steiner parent with his wife Nicole, Paul raised two boys and was a founding parent of the Silver Tree Steiner school in the Perth Hills. As a teacher Paul taught at the Perth Waldorf School for many years, and as a musician, he has widely explored world music traditions. His forthcoming book, Music of the Spheres: A Listener’s Guide takes the reader through the door that music provides into other, higher realms.

"All the skills you learn along the way…”

Anna Wetzel has brought many skills to her work at Warrah Specialist School. The school is part of the Warrah community, a Steiner-based disability service providing accommodation, supported employment, day services and a biodynamic farm at Dural on the outskirts of Sydney. Anna’s life journey has been a rich and fulfilling one, from a small town in Germany to being Principal of Australia’s only school for children with disabilities based on Rudolf Steiner education.

She brings a background as a Steiner school student, a high school teacher of History and Politics (and Blacksmithing), as well as two Masters degrees in Education. Soon she will be moving on to become Head of Student Support Services at Glenaeon Rudolf Steiner school. Anna reflects on her time at Warrah, her lifelong joy in supporting people with disabilities, and gratitude to her Steiner schooling for, as she puts it, “all the skills you learn along the way”.

From Weird to Wonderful: A Journey in Steiner Education

Eliza Allan grew up in Denmark, Western Australia near Golden Hill Steiner School, and from a distance, she thought the school was a bit weird: today she is the school’s Principal. Her journey from cynicism to commitment has taken her through some fascinating highways and byways: years teaching English in Indonesia, leadership roles in remote schools in the Kimberlys, and a year long journey, on her own with her 10 year old daughter, trekking the 5,330 km Bicentennial National Trail along the Great Dividing Range, on a horse and two donkeys, a trek which produced her book Donkey Dreaming.

The golden thread running through Eliza’s story began when a health professional suggested Steiner education for her daughter. That advice led to interest, then background research and then commitment as she became first a Steiner parent and then a Steiner teacher. Today she leads the school she once saw as weird into its next stage of growth, extending the high school right up to Year 12. Here is Eliza’s journey in Steiner Education.

Steiner X: Building a School, Building a Garden, Building Community

What’s it like being a founding student in a new school being built classroom by classroom? Do you have memories of deficit or an absence of facilities? Well, no! Inger Boerema was one of the founding children at the Willunga Waldorf School south of Adelaide, and her memories are all of a rich childhood filled with imagination, play and a joyful community. Her Year 12 Project took these qualities to another level in her construction of a creative garden at the school, a year long undertaking where she developed skills in artistic design, construction and community building, as well as the life-long character strengths of self-confidence and advocacy. After a gap year working with marginalised communities in Ethiopia, she completed two university degrees and now works to develop the “circular economy” in local government in Melbourne. Inger is a parent in a Steiner school, and as a Board member she is happy seeing her own children enjoy their education as much as she did, while she continues her life work in building community.

Steiner X: The making of a powerful story-teller and collaborative cultural leader

After an illustrious career in theatre and the creative arts, Brenna Hobson is now Director of Programming at the Sydney Opera House. She was also fully educated at a Steiner school, and in this episode of Steiner X, Brenna reflects on the formative influences that shaped a career which took her from the Belvoir Street Theatre in Sydney to Executive Director of the National Theatre of Scotland in Glasgow. On her return to Sydney and appointment to the Sydney Opera House in 2024 she was described as a “powerful story-teller and collaborative cultural leader”. She now oversees the delivery of up to 700 events and productions annually in this most iconic of Australian buildings. Yet her Steiner roots still echo through the years as the memories of Main Lesson stories, hiking in Nature and traditional crafts continue to resonate in both her professional, and personal life.

Steiner X, Y and Z: The formation of a lifelong learner

Marcus Pater is a Steiner X, Y and Z: he is a graduate of
Lorien Novalis School for Rudolf Steiner Education, Dural, Sydney, and is now
both a teacher in the high school there and also a parent. In between he
trained at Queensland University of Technology in Acting and worked for over 12
years in professional theatre, before returning to his former school as a
parent and then teacher. He looks back with fond memories on the highlights of
his education that shaped who he is today: the class plays, the class trips,
the music program and a love of Nature. Together they gave him a way of looking
at the world that maintains curiosity, freshness and resilience, all the traits
of a lifelong learner.

Meeting Infinity: Seeing the World Differently

Sophia Montefiore is Senior High School Coordinator at the Newcastle Waldorf School. As well as teaching across numbers of subjects, Sophia is an artist, published illustrator and more recently a teacher of Projective Geometry, a discipline that blends the rigour of Mathematics with the beauty of Art. In this episode she discusses her work and speaks about the power of this subject to change how we see the world: by expanding our awareness out to Infinity and back, we learn to see the profound connections that underlie our existence. As a Main Lesson in Year 11, Projective Geometry opens the doors of perception for students to see the interconnectedness and beauty of our material, and non-material worlds.

You can explore Sophia’s work here: < https://sophiaartperspectives.com.au/ >.

“What’s in it for dads? The journey of a Steiner parent”

Malcolm Day is an architect and builder (and happy labourer!) and a long term Steiner dad. He and his wife between them have put five children through two Steiner schools in Sydney. Malcolm has thought deeply about his family’s journey in Steiner education, and here he tells his children’s very diverse stories, their individual learning and later careers, and his learning as a parent. What might they have in common that was shaped by their school experiences? And he addresses the question, “What’s in it for Dads?” His advice is simple: get involved and your personal rewards will be great!

Lyres and Levers: The Shaping of a Software Engineer

The Steiner X Series featuring former students.

Max Chuquimia is a professional software engineer, working on mobile applications and AI. He credits his Steiner education with many offerings that helped shape his approach to work, and life. He didn’t have access to digital devices as a child, yet when he did in early adolescence, he brought an enquiring and practical attitude that made him an active manager of technology, not just a passive consumer. Geometry gave him an inner visual sense of shape and design, one that informs his daily work in coding and programming. Learning the lyre laid a foundation in music that continued into adult life. Listen to Max’s story and hear how lyres and music, Geometry and levers in mechanics, all contributed to the successful shaping of this Steiner educated software engineer.

A Steiner School and a Soccer Team”: Reflections on a Class Teacher Cycle

To agree to accompany her husband’s job move to a city in Australia, Katherine Arconati needed to find both a Steiner school for her children, and a high enough level soccer team for herself. She found both, and putting her Californian training as a Steiner teacher to good use, she recently completed a cycle of eight years as a primary Class Teacher. In this episode she reflects on what the highlights have been for her in this educational journey that is unique to Steiner schools. She shares her professional joy in accompanying children as they grow through a critical phase in their learning development, her love of Mathematics and Geometry, and a student who could recite Pi to 400 decimal places!

“A Rich Toolbox of Approaches”: Steiner education and the roots of creativity.

Dr Jonathan Spreer is Associate Professor of Mathematics at the University of Sydney. He was entirely educated at a Steiner school, the Uhlandshohe Waldorf School in Stuttgart, Germany, which is the very first Steiner school in the world founded by Rudolf Steiner himself and still going strong 100 years later. Jonathan tells his story and reflects on some of the things from his school education that have shaped him as a person and a professional: wood crafts, numbers, music, the arts, all of which gave him “a rich toolbox of approaches” to support his creativity as a mathematician.

Teacher as Story Teller

Meet Emily Watts, a young teacher who has recently completed her first year in a Steiner Class Teacher cycle. In this episode she takes us inside her classroom and shares the rhythm of her day with the children. A highlight for her is telling a story every day, a unique feature of a Steiner classroom, one that transforms the role of teacher from being just a deliverer of the formal curriculum to creating a living presence in the imagination of the child.
