I'd heard of Aslan when I was in the band Guernica but didn't know their music and probably didn't want to as they were just another competitor. That's the way it is when you are in a band. When I first heard the song "This Is". I loved the melody and to this day I love this song. There's a line in the song "Everybody hits you with this feeling" which from what I know of Christy encapsulates him. People who experience trauma as a child either close up and protect themselves or become very sensitive. I think Christy was the latter. I think he could feel other people's trauma and became a voice for those who were suffering. That's a hard burden to carry and eventually it took its toll.

In March 2017 Christy invited me into his house to talk on Podarooney. He was witty, warm and refreshingly honest. He could see a bullshitter a mile away and wasn't afraid to be upfront about it. That's not very common in show business where everyone is afraid to offend the gatekeepers. Maybe being aware of your mortality makes you open and honest but I think that was just Christy.

The Wild Geeze is made up of Miss Lavelle and Breda from the Queer Cabaret. The duo met a year and a half ago. Miss Lavelle was running Limerick’s first monthly cabaret show ‘Chez Le Cabaret’ in the artistic Chez Le Fab, Arthur’s Quay.

Breda being a comedian, did not hesitate to message and ask to be a part of a Limerick cabaret. Breda performed at the September show and brought the house down. Their on-stage banter and appreciation of giant vagina puppets was the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

Karl MacDermott was amongst the new breed of stand-up comedians in the Ireland of that era.
In 1988 he helped co-found The Comedy Cellar at The International Bar in Dublin with Barry Murphy, Ardal O’Hanlon and Kevin Gildea.
After appearing in his own one - man comedy show Memoirs of a Midget at The Peacock Theatre in 1989 and he had successful runs at The Gilded Balloon in The Edinburgh Fringes from 1991-93 with shows like An Afternoon With Klaus Barbie's Pen-pal and Stand-Up Stories. In September 2021, his new humour fiction novel 58% Cabbage, about a sit-down nobody who tries stand-up comedy, was published by Black Spring Press Group.

Episode 118 - Mike Gunn

Mike Gunn (born 1964) is a British stand-up comedian, presenter, actor, writer, and voiceover artiste. He is most notable for his performance on Michael McIntyre's Comedy Roadshow and for appearing in nine episodes of Al Murray's Time Gentlemen Please.
In the late 1980s he attended Clouds House, a 12-step drug treatment centre for his heroin addiction, and has been drug-free ever since. It was during his rehabilitation that Mike took up stand-up comedy, performing his first gig at Jacksons Lane Community Centre, North London, in 1995.
Mike spent four years educating young children about drugs by working on the 2Smart4Drugs roadshow which was funded by Essex police.

Gunn has been a contributor for The Guardian, and has also written for Time Out, The List, The 11 O'Clock Show (CH4) and even Match of The Day Magazine.

Episode 117 - Jo Caulfield

In 2010, Jo Caulfield was nominated as 'Funniest Woman 2010' (LAFTA Awards). She has previously been nominated as 'Best Female Comedian 2002' (Chortle Awards), 'Best Compere 2004' (Chortle Awards) and one of 'The 100 Greatest Stand-Ups' (Channel 4).

She has appeared at major comedy clubs, both in the UK and overseas, and has completed two solo nationwide tours, and a further three as support act of Graham Norton, Puppetry of the Penis and Rory Bremner. For the last nine years, Caulfield has taken a new solo comedy show to the Edinburgh Fringe.
Caulfield was Comedy Writer/Programme Consultant for all five series of the BAFTA Award-winning So Graham Norton. She was also head writer on both Ruby Wax's Waiting Game and Zoe Ball's 'Strictly Dance Fever' (BBC3). Caulfield has also written for Joan Rivers, Anne Robinson, Denise Van Outen and Ant & Dec among others.

Since the day she switched from guitar to bass aged 17, Ellen O’Reilly has been one of the busiest bassists around. Combined with a powerful lead vocal, this has made her a go-to musician for live, recording and TV work alike.
Hailing from Drogheda on Irelands east coast, Ellen had built up an impressive CV in her native country, appearing on Irish TV shows like Class Act and Podge and Rodge, playing with numerous Irish artists, and gaining extensive live performance experience.
Having been initially self-taught, Ellen decided to take her playing to the next level and won the prestigious Ernieball/Musicman Bass Scholarship to study at the Institute of Contemporary Music Performance in 2011. She then went on to win the “Best Bassist” award and leave with an Honours Degree in Popular Music Performance.
Ellen is now performing as a stand up comedian on a regular basis on the London circuit and is using comedy to deal with some major recent life changes such as a cancer scare and the break up of a longterm relationship.

Episode 113 - Francis Cronin

In 2005 Francis Cronin served with the United Nations on the UNMIL peace enforcing mission in Liberia and on his return began an Irish Army cadetship as part of the 82nd Cadet class and received a presidential commission in 2007 'Winning the tactical sword for leadership'. He retired a lieutenant in 2008.
While serving in the Irish Defense Forces he began a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychological studies and Spanish at the National University of Ireland, Galway.

After living his entire final year of university in a tent Francis performed a one man show Tent Boy While living in the tent Francis achieved national acclaim for his video series documenting his adventures on his YouTube channel Glowpunk. He began performing standup comedy in 2013 and has since performed with Emmy Award winning Saturday Night Live alumnus Dana Carvey and Christopher Titus.

He recently walked from San Francisco to LA to raise money and awareness for homeless people. He is about to do the same back here in Ireland by walking from Galway to Dublin starting on December 19th.

Matthew Dunehoo is an actor and director, known for No Margrettes (2015), The Vetting(2017) and Wretch (2019). As creator and leader of the band Doris Henson, he shaped one of KC’s most celebrated rock groups. Doris skirted the brink of national recognition. Before its demise in October 2006, the band opened for Billy Corgan on tour; released its second album, Give Me All Your Money and even got shout outs from Pitchforkmedia and Spin. He then moved to New York and formed the band Baby Teardrops releasing the album “X Is For Love” . He moved back to Kansas City and formed current band The Slights. The film Wretch written and directed by Mathew was shot in KC in May 2018. It has been accepted at the Horror Hound Festival in Indianapolis, The Night Visions festival in Helsinki and now the Carlow International Film Festival in….Carlow. It will go on general release in 2020.

Tracy Carroll's two-year-old daughter Willow has the highest grade of cerebral palsy, is fed through a tube and will be in “nappies for the rest of her life.” The mum of two strongly criticised how the government means tests families who are struggling financially. She outlined to the Minister that she receives a €309 monthly domiciliary care allowance but it’s no sooner in her pocket before it’s spent.

Tracy has to travel from Kells to Dublin every week to get Willow to montessori because of a lack of facilities and staff suitable for her needs close by. Tracy gets nine hours of home help per week which she spends dropping her five year old son Noah to school and collecting Willow’s medication. Tracy said: “We should be given a yearly allowance to spend on services that we know would benefit our children. Instead of throwing money at it, they need to talk to parents to see exactly what is needed."

“The State are massively failing in every area of healthcare. I have no confidence in the services that are provided or that change is coming.”

Episode 110 - Shazia Mirza

Shazia Mirza was born in Birmingham, England—the eldest daughter of Muslim parents who moved from Pakistan to Birmingham in the 1960s. About a year into her comedy career, after the September 11, 2001 attacks, Mirza performed a routine which began "My name is Shazia Mirza. At least, that's what it says on my pilot's licence". The routine was widely commented upon, and she was profiled as a ground breaking comedian on CBS's 60 Minutes. Shazia has been a columnist for The Guardian since 2008. Her show 'The Kardashians Made Me Do It' premiered at Kilburn's Tricycle Theatre and went on to sell out runs at London's Soho Theatre. The show was a satire on offence and political correctness and was critically well received. It also toured for 103 performances in Europe. Her comedy is said to push barriers and as a comedian she is often referred to as 'brave'. I talked to her straight after she had been to meet members of The Royal Family.

Episode 109 - Mike Farragher

Mike Farragher has been a well-known columnist in the Irish American community for the last two decades, covering the Irish and Irish American music scenes for the New York based Irish Voice and Irishcentral.com. He’s written a series of funny essay books about growing up Irish, Catholic, and guilty in the swamps of New Jersey called “This Is Your Brain on Shamrocks.” These books are the backbone of a new series called “McLean Avenue,” an Irish American comedy set in the Manhattan suburbs not far from where Mike grew up.

There’s a priest in this series so I dusted off my collar from the Father Ted Days, flew to Kansas, and joined the crew for a few laughs. I talked to Mike while he was in Dublin in between business trips and we talked about his books, off-Broadway plays, and the road that led him to the McLean Avenue TV show

Drogheda Homeless Aid aim to restore dignity and hope by providing care, support and shelter for homeless men, encouraging self-development, independent living and resettlement.
Drogheda Homeless Aid was set up in 1982 by Sr. Cait Fitzgerald to cater for the growing number of homeless people in the community, and since then has provided accommodation, care and support for over 4,000 homeless people, many of whom have resettled into our community and are living independent fulfilled lives.
Drogheda Homeless Aid caters for 25 residents at any one time with 140 men typically staying in the hostel in a typical twelve-month period.
Drogheda Homeless Aid is also a housing association with 5 long term houses and 3 transitional houses. I spoke to Bernard Maguire the chef in the centre and a couple residents, Martin and Pigeon.

Vulpynes are a two piece punk rock band from Dublin comprising of Kaz on drums and Maeve Molly on guitar and vocals. In spite of the lack of a bass player the band have a weighty sound which is generated through overdrive, distortion and Kaz's intense and controlled drumming. In July 2016 only months after forming the band released their first single "Terry Said" and in 2017 released their second single "OCD". In 2018 they released their debut EP ‘Vulpynes’ on UK label Headcheck Records to critical acclaim - supported Marmozets, Deap Vally & DOYLE(Misfits), blazed a trail across the UK festival circuit, made their German gig debut and released their gritty, impassioned track 2 Cents. They have recently toured with Sleaford Mods and are about to play their own show The Academy.

Paul has recently had major roles in the series The Informer on BBC and the film Halal Daddy. With Patrick McDonnell I was in The Pound Shop Boys and am currently touring with him as the Culchie Warriors. Our sketches can be found on the Joe and Pat Facebook page. Patrick McDonnell has written for and acted in The Savage Eye and Naked Camera and more recently in The Tommy Tiernan Show. With Paul Woodfull I was in The Hairy Bowsies. Justin Kelly is singer and lyric writer with The Sons Of Southern Ulster. Hailing from Bailieborough, Co Cavan, the Sons of Southern Ulster includes David Meagher, who lives in the Ballina/Killaloe area and Justin Kelly based in Boston. Last year the Sons got together to release an album ('Foundry Folk Songs') of songs about growing up in Cavan in the early 80s! Despite the Cavan roots, the content is relevant to pretty much all of rural Ireland of the time. The album has been received very favourably, with great reviews and receiving an Irish Times Song of the Week accolade. Their music has brought comparisons with The Fall, Sleaford Mods and A House. The songs focus on life in rural Ireland in the 80s, providing a warts-and-all description of a place that was both innocent and abrasive. The album was produced by Daragh Dukes at his Castleconnell Studios and recorded at various locations in Ireland and the USA. Vocals were recorded and engineered by Boston music stalwart David Minehan (of the Neighborhoods) at his Wooly Mammoth Sound studio, not long before he headed off on a world tour as guitarist with the legendary Replacements. The current band line up includes Justin Kelly (Boston, vocals), David Meagher (guitars), Paddy Glackin (Perth, bass) and Noel Larkin (Meath, drums).

In 2016 Sean moved to New York where he quickly became known as one to watch, performing in famous venues such as the Comedy Cellar, Gotham Comedy Club and Carolines on Broadway. A keen eye for detail Sean has also developed a reputation as a roaster and is currently ranked No. 1 roast comic in New York City. I performed with Sean in Kansas City, Queens and at The Electric Picnic. He is a genuine good guy and very talented. I caught up with him before he moved out to L.A.

Sean Lock is an English comedian and actor. He began his comedy career as a stand-up comedian, won the British Comedy Award in 2000 in the category of Best Live Comic, and was nominated for the Perrier Comedy Award. Lock is well known for his appearances on television and radio. He has written material for Bill Bailey, Lee Evans and Mark Lamarr and was voted the 55th greatest stand-up comic on Channel 4's 100 Greatest Stand-Ups in 2007 and again in the updated 2010 list as the nineteenth greatest stand-up comic. He is possibly best known for his role as a team captain on Channel 4 comedy panel show 8 Out of 10 Cats since it began from 2005-2015, and on 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown since 2012\. I have known Sean over the years but recently met him at the Vodafone Comedy Carnival. We arranged a chat for a later date and this is it.

Cavan man Aidan Greene had a sold out run at the 2017 Edinburgh Fringe Festival with his show (500) Days of Stammer , a one man show about stammering and falling in love. The show was performed to acclaim in Dublin, Albuquerque and most importantly, Cavan. He co-hosted Cavan the Craic, a stand up compilation show, with fellow Cavan comedian Davey Reilly to full rooms at the 2016 and 2017 Edinburgh Fringe festivals. As well as a comedian Aidan is also an accomplished storyteller. In 2016 he was runner up in the Moth Grandslam in Dublin. His story The Early Days of Stammer was featured on the Moth Radio Hour and broadcast on over 400 radio stations globally, to a listenership of over 30 million. In October 2017, he was invited to speak at National Stammering Awareness Day. I met him at The Edinburgh Fringe Festival where he performed his show Stutter Island.

In 2012 and 2013 he was invited to join Tom Stade as a special guest on his nationwide UK tours playing to packed houses across the UK. Episode 90 - Owen O'Neill

Owen O'Neill is a veteran of the Edinburgh Fringe Festivals, having performed stand-up or theatre gigs there for over twenty years. He was nominated for the 1994 Perrier Award with his show "It's a Bit Like This", and won a Fringe First in 1999 with Sean Hughes for the theatre show "Dehydrated and Travellin' Light".[4] Theatre sets have included 12 Angry Men, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest and The Odd Couple. Stand-up has included "Off My Face" and "It Was Henry Fonda's Fault". As a writer, his debut feature film Arise and Go Now was screened by BBC2 and was directed by Danny Boyle and starred Ian Bannen.[5] He has adapted a number of his works of short fictions to be plays or films. His short film The Basket Case won the best Irish short at the 2008 Boston Irish Film Festival. O'Neill's play Absolution performed on Off Broadway in 2010 to good reviews. He doesn't specialise in commute only humour). Ed plays Father Gabriel in the RTE hit series Bridget and Eamonn and is a brilliant stand up. But take my word for it. Andrew Stanley is an Irish stand up who has appeared at numerous festivals worldwide including The Cat Laughs in Kilkenny, Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Adelaide Fringe Festival and Sydneys Cracker Comedy Festival with hour long shows. These included a show with Australian comic, Damian Clark, called I Dare Ya, which went on to become a hit TV show on Irish station RTÉ 2. He also took part in the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow in 2009 and the New Zealand Comedy Festival in Auckland in 2010\. He was invited to the prestigious Just For Laughs comedy festival in Montreal where he performed alongside Ardal O'Hanlon, Colm O'Regan and Neil Delamere as part of the O'Comics show. A few years ago I toured The States with Andrew taking in KC, LA, NY, SF, C and B ( you can guess where the last two are and it's not Cincinatti and Buffalo). Where ever we went he developed an immediate rapport with the audience and blew them away with his improvisational crowd work. We chat about his technique and how the scene has changed since our different times starting out in comedy.
