Talking With Cancer is a weekly podcast that does exactly that; two friends, Katie Phillips & Clair Whitefield, talking. Katie has cancer and Clair doesn’t; just like the statistic, that “one in two of us will experience cancer in our lifetime”.

In February 2022, at 43 years old and with no prior health issues or concerns, Katie was told that she had thyroid cancer. To be more specific, a type of thyroid papillary cancer known as hobnail, with a ROS1 fusion. The doctors said that her diagnosis was “rare” and “complicated” – not words that Katie wanted to hear in the same sentence.

In the early weeks following her diagnosis, she decided to keep an audio diary of her journey and immediately thought of her good friend Clair.

With Clair’s background in journalism, and Katie’s career in PR (she set up entertainment PR agency KPPR in 2011), they were the perfect match and recorded their weekly conversations over zoom.

‘Talking With Cancer’ gives insight into Katie’s life with cancer, her treatment and how she’s experiencing her world now that - in her own words - “everything has changed and nothing has changed”.

The chats between Katie and Clair can often be poignant and hard-hitting, but with Clair’s, compassionate and inquisitive approach complimenting Katie’s can-do, positive outlook toward life with cancer, the episodes are always cathartic, inspiring, and more often than not, very funny too (thanks to the weekly ‘mum cancer jokes’)!

Whether it’s tackling the more challenging topics that arise from facing life with cancer or the lighter moments encountered on the journey – “never moisturise before an echocardiogram” – each week, the podcast offers something for everyone, as we are all, in some way, affected by cancer.

Have a listen. You might learn something, understand a little more about living with cancer than you did before and hopefully, you’ll have a giggle too.

The certainty of the end

This week's bonus episode is in memory of Paola Marra, who made a moving and thought provoking film with world famous photographer Rankin, about her decision to go to Dignitas in Switzerland to die. Katie was privileged enough to speak to Rankin, about why he made the film for the Dignity in Dying Campaign, which was launched in March 2024 to coincide with Paola’s death.
He talked about his bond with Paola and how struck he was by her decision to end her life having lived with cancer for seven years.
Rankin himself has done a lot of work around Death and Dying, including his exhibition Alive in the Face of Death in 2013, and more recently he published the book: How to Die Well in 2021.
Katie also speaks to her friend Cordelia Taylor, who has been living with a brain tumour for five and a half years, and was recently told by her medical team that they are out of options and that she has 2-3 months to live. In response to this Cordelia hosted a Celebration of Life party, which Katie attended. They discuss this as an idea, and they talk about all the feelings Cordelia has surrounding death & dying.
Lastly, Katie shares her own news, about the next chapter she is about to embark on in her cancer treatment, having had some progression on a recent scan.

Lozza aka Big Sister Energy

This week is a sort of bonus episode. At last, Katie speaks with Lauren Mahon, following a few attempts. They have a very open chat about a lot of things. Of course from one podcast host to another they talk about "You, Me & the Big C", and how that legacy lives on. Lauren talks candidly about how she navigates grief and death anxiety, particularly over recent years when so many people close to her have sadly died with cancer. She reflects on the strong and open hearted woman she has become, because of her own breast cancer experience. They discuss sex and cancer, fertility and cancer and of course Lauren’s charity Girl vs Cancer. And she passionately explains why she cares so much about a number of issues and wants to try and make real change. Katie signs off with her own health update, following her second clear scan in January.

Katie's guest this week has over 20 years working in mycology and the ecosystem, understanding the benefits of mushrooms, and sharing that knowledge all around Europe. In her words she had to evangelise the study of mushrooms to help build her audience and in turn her business. Hearing about the benefits was fascinating, and Katie has first hand experience of their products which she believes have contributed to her wellness hugely. Add the promo code Care15 for all orders within the UK for 15% off.

Good at doing nothing

Katie is back from her holiday and realises she has become really good at doing nothing, something she is proud to admit. She has a lot to process but isn't quite ready to do that just yet. So she'll wait. She reflects on who she used to be, and how she wants to feel like she is moving forward following everything she's experienced.

Let's look at the "why?"

Katie feels so inspired to have interviewed Dr Nina Fuller Shavel this week. So much so, that she has now become a patient of Synthesis Clinic herself. Their integrative approach to Oncology and Women's Health feels like a breath of fresh, an organisation where healthcare is collaborative, personalised, holistic and above all about feeling well. Nina always wants to look at the "why?"...why does someone feel the way they do and what can be done about it?

Dame Laura Lee founded Maggie's Centre following her work as a nurse with Maggie Keswick Jencks, who's vision it was to set up beautifully designed cancer centres. The idea being that people impacted by cancer could come along for support and care and have somewhere to be in contrast to the hospital. They should walk out feeling better than when they went in. Laura fully understands the needs of people affected by cancer, and has done and continues to do incredible work in this space. https://www.maggies.org/

This week Katie interviews registered dietician Alastair Lynn, who himself was diagnosed with cancer aged 29, in 2019 (he's a VWC in ep 7), and is on a long term treatment plan. They talked about Alastair's training and the work he's done in hospitals as well as his work with cancer patients.
Fear

Katie reflects on how much medication she is taking nowadays and the dichotomy of dealing with their side effects. But overall she is focused on embracing the drugs and remains in awe of their effectiveness. She had a much-needed break away with her husband Dinc, and there she realised how much fear she is holding in her body. And she is determined to let this fear go and continue to move forward.

Doctors get cancer too

Katie had the pleasure of chatting with Dr Anisha Patel, aka doctorsgetcancertoo. They discussed why it’s so common for people to disregard symptoms, they talked about how anxiety and panic attacks can often occur whilst dealing with cancer and also the after-effects of coming through the other side. Anisha’s book “Everything you hoped you’d never need to know about bowel cancer” is both personal and informative, a very useful and important read.

New Treatment

Katie chats solo this week, after a few months' hiatus. She is finally feeling more herself, and enthused to start the pod again. She opens up about some of the low points she’s experienced recently, adapting to the new treatment, and handling side effects and she is trying to take a different perspective on her illness and outlook.
This week we hear from Nell Bhadresha about how her cancer diagnosis led her to become an ambassador for Bart’s Charity to ensure more women like her were represented within the cancer community.

Triumph

Katie chats to an old client, the brilliant and inspiring comedian and host of Channel 4’s The Last Leg Adam Hills MBE. He is incredibly honest about his father’s double cancer diagnosis, and he talks about how he used "positive denial" to manage the situation better. Adam went on to write Clown Heart, all about how he handled his father’s journey with cancer and, through that show, connected with cancer patient audiences all over the world. Adam realised that by making people laugh, he was giving his father’s triumphant death even greater meaning. Katie also shares how she is feeling about the new treatment plan and how she has no choice but to sit in the unknown.

It’s a few weeks in and Katie can feel her treatment working. But other things feel weird; like being seen as the ‘ill person’ when she’s with friends and family. Although buoyed by the knowledge treatment’s working, Katie knows she’s avoiding asking her doctors more difficult questions about the future. She talks to Clair about what those questions are & the answers she’s not ready for.

Diagnosis

It’s been two weeks since Katie found out she has cancer. She asks her good friend Clair to help her keep an audio diary. There’s still so much that’s unknown; the doctors seem confused, and everything is very complicated. All Katie knows is that her symptoms: a persistent cough and a swollen lymph node on her neck are cause for concern. Repeatedly explaining to friends and family what’s going on is becoming a little too much; so Katie decides to send out these weekly chats as a way to tell everyone, all at once. To keep them up to date and to let her tell her story in her own way.

Trailer - Episode 1
