<title>Empire State of Match-Play — 2025 Ryder Cup Preview &amp; The Mystique of Bethpage Black</title>
      <link>https://pony.golf </link>
<description>The Ryder Cup is heading to New York, and the spotlight is squarely on Bethpage Black—America’s most famous muni with the most intimidating welcome sign in golf.

In this solo episode, Scott Poniewaz (@pony_golf) breaks down the 2025 captains—Keegan Bradley for Team USA and Luke Donald for Team Europe—what their leadership styles mean, and how each side can squeeze points on a course built to test nerve and execution. Then we dive deep into Bethpage Black’s history, Golden Age architecture, and the exact holes most likely to swing matches when the crowds get loud.

You’ll get a practical fan guide for attending (LIRR tips, best vantage points, food recs) and a clear picture of how match play changes the strategy on a demanding championship layout. Scott closes with what he’s watching for on Friday morning and an early prediction for Sunday’s outcome.

What you’ll learn

How Bradley and Donald will shape pairings, chemistry, and course strategy

Why Bethpage Black’s routing, bunkering, and elevated greens are perfect for match play

  The specific holes to circle: 1, 4, 5, 8, 12, 13, 15, 17, and 18

Fan logistics: getting there, where to post up, and local eats near the park

Early storylines and a measured prediction for the week

<title>Bunkers are too easy for pro golfers &amp; a historical look at the use of sand in golf</title>
<description>This week we look at sand. Not the beach kind, but the golf course kind. While there are many different types of bunkers in golf, which we also touch on, one of the big takes on this episode is the controversial idea that the pro's have it too easy when it comes to bunker play, and the PGA Tour, LIV Golf, and other professional tours need to take a hard look at whether they should still allow rakes.
We also dive into the use of bunkering in golf course architecture over the past few centuries, including a few styles of bunkering, then finish off with a walk through some of golf's most notorious bunker-centric golf courses across the US, Scotland, and England.

<title>How To Quit Golf (And Get Your Life Back) with golf author Danny Cahill</title>
<description>"You tell yourself a child could tap in the 16-inch putt you missed to push the last hole—no one abuses you like you abuse yourself when you are playing badly, and no one is less convinced than you that you are playing well when you are, in fact, playing well."
-Excerpt: How To Quit Golf (And Get Your Life Back)
Author Danny Cahill joins us on this episode of "A Good Walk Spoiled: Adventures in Golf" and dishes out some of his favorite parts of his third book. While he also finds himself entertaining crowds on stages across the country as a motivational speaker, he also talks about his personal transition from a high level tennis player to the game of golf as an adult. As he immersed himself in the frustrations of the game, he realized golf also raises a different breed of people. Both humorous and entertaining, this episode will help you get to know Mr. Cahill, his book, and if you've ever thought about writing your own book, he also shares some of his tips on how to write a book.

You can find his website (and book him for your own public speaking events) here: https://www.accordingtodanny.com/
You can find his book on Amazon here: How To Quit Golf (And Get Your LIfe Back)

<title>Newbie Guide To The Game Of Golf: Basic Rules, Etiquette, and Culture Every New Golfer Should Know</title>
<description>This episode of A Good Walk Spoiled, Adventures in golf is a must for every new golfer and it should provide some stories and entertainment even for the most seasoned golfers out there. This episode covers a variety of etiquette, rules, and even tips for getting out on the course for newer golfers, including non-golfers that may be finding their way into a golfing bachelorette, bachelor, family reunion, or other peer pressure scenario. This will help you at least feel a little more comfortable stepping out on a real golf course for the first time.
This compilation of rules and suggestions for beginner golfers is by no means an end-all, be-all. I realized as I have found myself playing more golf this summer with a lot of people who are new to the game and there is some basic etiquette and standards.
My home course also happens to be a resort course, so sometimes it is the family looking for something different to do, which is great, by all means, welcome to the world of golf, the more the merrier (as long as my greens fees don’t keep going up, haha).
However, when it gets frustrating, is when people don’t know some of the basics or don’t understand the importance of the pace of play “I’m on vacation and I paid good money, so I’m going to hit every shot, look for every ball, and by golly, if I’m out here 6 hours, I paid for it, I’m getting my money’s worth…”
Unfortunately, those of us behind those groups are the ones paying the real price with a 5-hour round.
So I’d love for you to subscribe, and like this important episode for beginner golfers, but also I know this isn’t all-encompassing, so please add your comments to what I missed, or share your personal stories of ‘wow did that just happen on the golf course?”

<description>Hello and welcome to another episode of A Good Walk Spoiled: Adventures in Golf, with your host, Scott Poniewaz! Happy 4th of July and I hope everyone has a safe Independence day.
In today's episode, we journey back to the 4th of July, 1927, a day that was not only about American celebrations but also a landmark in golf history. On this day, Bobby Jones secured his third U.S. Open title at Oakmont Country Club, a victory celebrated for its proximity to Independence Day and Jones' extraordinary display of skill, mental resilience, and sportsmanship.
Bobby Jones, a golfing prodigy from Atlanta, Georgia, was already well-known by age 25. The 1927 U.S. Open at Oakmont, known for its challenging layout and fast greens, showcased Jones’ legendary status. Despite the elite competition and Oakmont's demanding conditions, Jones exhibited remarkable consistency and strategic precision throughout the tournament, securing his victory in the finale on Independence Day.
Oakmont Country Club, designed by Pittsburgh industrialist Henry Clay Fownes, has a storied history and is renowned for its punishing course layout. The 1927 U.S. Open was a grueling test of golf that highlighted both Jones' technical mastery and the ferocity of Oakmont's design. Throughout the tournament, Jones tackled Oakmont's tough greens and deep bunkers with finesse, underscoring his reputation as one of golf’s greatest.
Jones’ triumph on July 4th resonated beyond the golfing world, symbolizing American ideals of hard work and excellence. This victory was pivotal in his career, setting the stage for his historic Grand Slam in 1930. As we reflect on this episode, we delve into how Jones' 1927 U.S. Open win at Oakmont remains a celebrated blend of patriotism and sporting excellence.
Join me, Scott Poniewaz, as we explore this iconic moment in golf history and understand why Bobby Jones' victory on that historic Independence Day remains one of the sport’s most cherished events.

<itunes:summary>Ahead of the U.S. Open's visit to Pinehurst No. 2, Matt Minder, the co-founder of the Amateur Players Tour joins A Good Walk Spoiled.
Matt discusses how he chased his pro playing dreams after college on the mini tours of Florida after making a promise to himself that if he could shoot under par 30 days in a row, he would be ready to compete. He shares the stories of what makes golf's elite players on another level.
He also shares how his playing experiences led him and his co-founder, Jody Barrett, to build what is now one of adult amateur golf's fastest growing, multi-divisional amateur golf tours. He shares how he and Jody managed to secure Pinehurst No. 2 as their first national championship host venue, a Donald Ross classic which also is hosting this week's USGA U.S. Open Championship and host of a legendary moment in Payne Stewart's win. He also shares how The Amateur Players Tour has grown to 43 local tours across the US and Canada with its amateur golf tour for men, women, seniors, and all abilities. It is a tour that allows golfers to play like the pros play.
They also discuss how they have worked so hard to secure partnerships with major brands like GlobalGolf and support military veterans through their incredible partnership with Folds of Honor. He chats about a plethora of great courses, including Chambers Bay, TPC San Antonio, Pinehurst #2, Whistling Straits, Annbriar, and many others with a 2024 National Championship preview of Myrtle Beach and True Blue Caledonia along with Bear's Best.

<title>How Does The Golf Handicap System Work? Plus 2024 USGA GHIN Changes | Playing Donald Ross's Bedford Springs</title>
<description>Now, for those stepping onto the fairways for the first time, you might be wondering, "What exactly is a handicap, and why does it matter?" Well, think of it as golf's great equalizer, a way to level the playing field and allow golfers of different abilities to compete on an even footing.
At its core, your handicap represents your potential skill level, indicating how many strokes you might need to complete a round of golf relative to a scratch golfer - someone who plays at the top of their game. The higher your handicap, the more strokes you're allotted to reach par, making the game more enjoyable and competitive for all.
But how is this magical number calculated? Ah, that's where the World Handicap System (WHS) comes into play. It takes into account your scores from recent rounds, adjusts for the difficulty of the course you played, and voila - your handicap index is born.
At its core, a handicap is a numerical representation of a golfer's potential skill level, allowing players of different abilities to compete on an equal playing field. The process involves several steps that we walk you through in this episode.
In this episode, we also discuss what these 2024 USGA GHIN handicap revisions are all about. Well, the USGA (United States Golf Association) and its counterparts around the world have been diligently working to enhance the WHS, aiming to make it even more inclusive, accessible, and accurate. Several changes help golfers post scores that are on different styles of courses, including short courses, and also those that can't fit a full 18 holes in.
In our Chips, Bites, and Flights segment, we visit Omni Bedford Springs Resort in Pennsylvania, which is proud to be home to one of the country’s first golf courses. Dating back to 1895, our restored, historic course offers an experience of the highest caliber to rival the most private of clubs. Overlooking breathtaking views of the Allegheny Mountains and Cumberland Valley, this remarkable course spans the work of three golf architectural masters—Spencer Oldham, A.W. Tillinghast, and Donald Ross. It is a sleeper course any golf course architecture aficionado will not want to miss.
Settle in and join us for another episode of A Good Walk Spoiled: Adventures in Golf.

<title>Chasing Scratch In Golf: How I Took My Golf Game From A 15 To A 2 Handicap | Golf In St. George, Utah</title>
<description>After a recent podcast I did on the guest side of things, with fellow Golfer Gang Network podcaster, Jeff Hartmann on his podcast “Fairways &amp; Dreams” I realized there was a lot of questions about how I went from a 15 handicap to nearly scratch at a 2 handicap in just a few years. Listen to that whole story on Jeff’s podcast – which I’ll link to in the description and my LinkTree or find it on golfergang.com along with your favorite podcast networks, again that’s golfergang.com (also where you can find this fantastic podcast and several other great golf pod’s).
This episode walks through the tools and technologies that helped me go from a 15 handicap in my golf game down to a 2 handicap as I work my way to being a scratch golfer and adult amateur tournament player on tours like the Amateur Players Tour and Golfweek Amateur Players Tour. While The Golfers Journal's Index Experiment is helping many broadly chase their golf improvement goals, this podcast will give you the background on how and why I used the tools I used to make big gains in my golf game and these tools and guides can help you, too.
During our Chips, Bites, and Flights segment, we dig into St. George, Utah, which is home to epic and scenic golf courses like Sand Hollow Resort, Copper Rock Golf Club, Sky Mountain, and the newest addition, Black Desert Resort.

While The Golfers Journal's Index Experiment is helping many broadly chase their golf improvement goals, this podcast will give you the background on how and why I used the tools I used to make big gains in my golf game and these tools and guides can help you, too. </p><p>During our Chips, Bites, and Flights segment, we dig into St. George, Utah, which is home to epic and scenic golf courses like Sand Hollow Resort, Copper Rock Golf Club, Sky Mountain, and the newest addition, Black Desert Resort. </p><p><br></p><p>Here are some links to @Pony_Golf: https://linktr.ee/ponygolf</p><p>Find A Good Walk Spoiled merch on Millions: https://millions.co/scott-poniewaz-golf</p><p>Check out the rest of the Golfer Gang Network Podcasts: <a href="https://www.golfergang.com/">https://www.golfergang.com/</a></p><p>Shop Holderness &amp; Bourne: https://alnk.to/74upT4S</p><p>Shop Galway Bay Golf Rain Gear: <a href="https://galwaybay.myshopify.com/?rfsn=7887308.cbaa9ce">https://galwaybay.myshopify.com/?rfsn=7887308.cbaa9ce</a></p><p><br></p><p>The Airbnb Tiny Home I reference in the episode: <a href="https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/43819665">https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/43819665</a></p><p>The Golf Sidekick: <a href="https://www.youtube.com/@GolfSidekick">https://www.youtube.com/@GolfSidekick</a></p><p>Golf Is Not A Game Of Perfect: <a href="https://amzn.to/44GboXJ">https://amzn.to/44GboXJ</a></p><p>Every Shot Must Have A Purpose: <a href="https://amzn.to/44Syz1n">https://amzn.to/44Syz1n</a></p><p><br></p><p> </p><p>Learn more about your ad choices. <title>What does Pony Golf Have in common with Mini Golf? | Who is Pony Golf: Scott Poniewaz's adventure in golf</title>
<description>This episode discovers the historic link between Pony Golf and miniature golf, also known to many as putt-putt. This surprising tidbit of history gets discussed about how Lansdale, Pennsylvania and a 4th of July weekend brought the world of miniature golf to this northern Pennsylvania area on a "plot of ground selected by Paul G. Hartman and Dr. Charles F Rossell, sponsors of the novelty game."
We also dive into the story of A Good Walk Spoiled's host, Scott Poniewaz. Scott discusses his background in golf, how soccer overtook his golf career, but also how some of his first international adventures in golf began thanks to a nondescript golf shop on the border of the Laos and Thailand border, and the ricefields of northeastern Thailand.
Scott also digs into his adult amateur career and how he's spent his time criss-crossing the country in search of various adult golf tour wins.

<title>Phish, Grateful Dead &amp; Golf with Jonathan Bogush | Guide to Seaview Golf Club - Home of The ShopRite LPGA Classic</title>
<description>This episode of A Good Walk Spoiled merges golf and Phish. We welcome guest, Jonathan Bogush, to the show and he shares stories across his 354 phish shows, and countless rounds of golf. As a former college golfer and avid Phish fan, it was only natural that he eventually brought his two passions together and started tossing his golf clubs in the trunk when he set out on countless Phish tours over the years. In the episode, we talk about his first show in New Brunswick, NJ which opened with an epic Buried Alive back in 1993, we touch on his experiences seeing the Grateful Dead, then talk about how he came up with the idea to host a major golf outing for nearly 200 Phishheads during a three-night run at Atlantic City at the legendary Donald Ross designed Seaview Golf Club Bay course. Jonathan also shares how Phish shows at Hollywood Bowl led him to the opportunity to play the exclusive Bel-Air Country Club, considered one of the nation's top golf courses.
We wrap up the episode with our "Chips, Bites, and Flights" segment traveling to Seaview Golf Club and Atlantic City, which is a natural way to wrap up this epic episode. Tune in, drop out, and join us for a great conversation and guide to this LPGA tour stop in Galloway, New Jersey on the outskirts of Atlantic City.

<title>The Masters Recap | LIV, PGA Tour, USGA, the R&amp;A and a history of controversy | Golf Chambers Bay</title>
<description>Welcome to "A Good Walk Spoiled," the podcast where we explore the intersection of golf, golf history, gastronomy, and travel. In this episode, we do a recap on The Masters, then later embark on a golfing adventure to the breathtaking Chambers Bay Golf Course in Washington State. Join us as we tee off on the rugged links-style layout, designed by renowned architects Robert Trent Jones Jr., Jay Blasi, and Bruce Charlton, and uncover the rich history of this iconic course, from hosting the U.S. Open Championship to Jordan Spieth's unforgettable victory in 2015.
We delve into the storied histories of the R&amp;A and the USGA, the two primary governing bodies of golf. From their humble beginnings to their pivotal roles in shaping the modern game, we explore how these organizations have influenced everything from equipment regulations to major championship venues.
But no discussion of golf's governing bodies would be complete without touching on the controversies that have occasionally arisen between them. From disputes over equipment regulations to debates about ball distance and player eligibility, we examine the tensions and disagreements that have shaped the relationship between the R&amp;A and the USGA over the years.
And speaking of controversies, we can't ignore the recent upheaval caused by LIV Golf (formerly known as the Super Golf League). This upstart league has sparked heated debates and drawn scrutiny from both the R&amp;A and the USGA, challenging the traditional structure and governance of the sport.
As we wrap up our golfing adventure with Chips, Bites, and Flights, we turn our attention to the culinary delights of the Pacific Northwest. From fresh seafood at Anthony's at Point Defiance to the iconic Canlis restaurant in Seattle, we sample the finest fare the region has to offer, savoring every bite along the way.
So, grab your clubs and your appetite, and join us for a journey through the fairways, feasts, and controversies of the golfing world on "A Good Walk Spoiled."

<title>Legendary Pete Dye | RBC Heritage &amp; Harbour Town Preview | Hilton Head Guide For Golfers</title>
<description>In this episode, Scott Poniewaz (Pony_Golf) takes listeners through the life, legacy, and highlights of Pete Dye, one of golf's most famous golf architects. Highlighting courses like Whistling Straits (host of the Ryder Cup), Harbour Town Golf Links, and TPC Sawgrass, this segment educates on some of the most recognizable Pete Dye golf design features.
The second section gives a preview to the RBC Heritage PGA Tournament in mid-April, which is hosted at Pete Dye's Harbour Town golf course in the Sea Pines Resort on Hilton Head Island. This famous tournament is steeped in tradition as one of the longest running PGA Tour events and highlights Arnold Palmer's win at the inaugural event in 1969 along with the famous plaid jacket that the winner earns.
In the final Chips, Bites, and Flights section, this episode guides listeners through the variety of accommodations, dining options, and golf courses to play when visiting Hilton Head Island. The perfect destination guide for a family golf trip, guys and girls golf trips, or the perfect couples trip. The episode highlights Bill Schmedes III and his Mastery Golf Performance golf school in neighboring Bluffton, South Carolina (and virtually via Skillest). We highlight the Kingdom Cup which has featured special guests including Jack Nicklaus, Annika Sorenstam, Matt Kuchar, Alexandra O'Laughlin, and caddie Geno Bonnalie. The Kingdom Cup is an annual golf tournament hosted by Kingdom Magazine, originally an Arnold Palmer publication covering golf history and topics related to the golfing lifestyle.

<title>Tips for first timers at The Masters | Augusta National trivia tidbits | Pasatiempo golf trip guide</title>
      <link>https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/pony-golf/episodes/Tips-for-first-timers-at-The-Masters--Augusta-National-trivia-tidbits--Pasatiempo-golf-trip-guide-e2htb92</link>
<description>A Good Walk Spoiled: A Golf Podcast by Scott Poniewaz (@Pony_Golf)

Hello and welcome to our inaugural and pilot episode of A Good Walk Spoiled, a generally entertaining podcast on golf, travel, life, and splashes of history, architecture, interviews, and more. Hosted by myself, Scott Poniewaz, also known as @Pony_Golf on social media, I look forward to bringing you along on some of the journeys that all golfers will enjoy and welcome your feedback every step of the way!

Today, we’ve got Augusta just around the corner, so it only makes sense that we kick off our first episode discussing what I consider to be the finest event in sports. The Masters.
If you’re lucky enough to find yourself at the Masters, then you’ll want to know the history. And although it has been a while since my only visit to the 2012 Masters practice round as a patron, here are a few tips to make the most of your day.

Part two of this episode digs into some interesting facts and trivia tidbits about Augusta National Golf Club, The Masters, and some of the stories of how Augusta came to be.

Last we close out the episode with our Chips, Bites &amp; Flights segment…
Those that follow me on Instagram may have seen a post about Sushi by Bou a couple years ago where I joked I would start a travel show called chips, bites, and flights… Well, here we are! Though it isn’t the full show, it will be a regular feature highlighting golf courses and destinations, with a few tips and ideas for getting there, staying, and enjoying the food along the way. As a foodie and golfer, I can’t help but highlight both!
We’re going to kick it off with Pasatiempo near Santa Cruz, California. A Dr. Alister MacKenzie masterpiece considered by many to be the finest semi-public course people can play in the United States.
