It’s the last proper lesson of term before they have a little festive distraction piece with some end of term Christmas episodes. With that in mind, Ron has planned some revision to make sure that what Laura has so far learned in A Level 2.0 has actually gone in.

It's the first winds of physics of the season and they begin by being two buff siblings, as ever, discussing squats and dead lifts. Then before physics can lift it’s vile head they are off on a LOTR conspiracy theory.

When the science starts, it starts with a mistake. No wait: errors.

They have a little bit of ground to revisit first… namely standard form. It goes wayyyyyy exactly as you’d imagine. First, Laura gets her mind blown by the idea that just because a number is minus does not mean it’s a smaller number. Honestly, for this portion, it’s like listening to one half of two different phone calls.

Then there’s a classic physics breakdown which almost ends the lesson at barely fifteen minutes in. Some yelling. Some tone. Some classic physics bants.

This week Laura and Ron are ruining Valentines Day for everyone in this very special Valentines Episode all about STIs.

First, Laura and Ron get to the bottom of one of the weirdest photos ever chosen to represent sexual health awareness.

Then Laura begins to talk Ron through the history of STIs and cures humans had for different genital diseases back when science was nothing more than witchcraft.

For over two years comedian Laura Lexx has been working painfully through the GCSE science syllabus with her younger, non comedian, brother Ron. And today, finally, the exams begin...

It's the first half of the Biology Foundation level exam. All three foundation exams were recorded in one week on consecutive nights so consider this the least exhausted, giddy and depressed they were.

It’s what we would call a messy start to what should be the epic firework display of our podcast. We finally sit down to do a biology exam but first Ron is playing Magic, then he thinks it’s Physics then he accidentally sends Laura the mark scheme. Smooth.

The exam begins. Laura gets steadily better at describing tables throughout the exam.

This week starts with a lot of chatter as Laura and Ron catch up post break for a holiday. Laura tells Ron all about seals and whether or not she would have sex with them and why she is angry with Cornwall.

This week we start with a bit of funeral procession etiquette, during which Ron finds it ridiculous how Laura functions in the world.

We then get back to electrolysis and specifically the electrolysis of molten ionic compounds. There's an element of hysteria about trying to define a metal - soemthing Ron swears they have covered ad nauseum and Laura swears is just nauseum. This week they are dealing with fall out from The Big Tricko; Laura is reeling from Ron’s betrayal and doesn’t know how to cope with what’s real and what’s false in the Lexx Education Universe.

They get back on the bacteria train, looking at bacterial diseases and infections. But this time the information is accurate. Instead of sticks and knives the bacteria now have cloaks. Technically, the science siblings are still on their holidays, so the intro and outro are from the brief pause in time on the 16th December. You remember that day? The day of the 90 minutes redo episode and multiple intros? They are still frozen in time there and then, but it is now somehow the future. But! Capital E and some equation stuff is back, even though Laura has really wanted to try and get into this episode so they could have a good physics lesson for once.

Ron explains that science is rarely portmanteaus, and Laura struggles to keep up with the note taking speed. It’s an interesting episode because Laura really does seem to do her best to try hard, but you can almost hear the click where her brain switches off when she gets overwhelmed.

It’s almost one of our most dismally bleak episodes for the sheer lack of hope coming off both of them. It’s just sadness. When she finally does get to the answer, she’s not even entirely sure what they’ve worked out. It’s very sad to hear.

Ron writes a cute little tune to try and work out what ten to the power five is. It’s a new feature they are thinking of adding on the regular called Ron’s Breakdown. Ten to the power ten really screws up both of them for a while and they end up in a sort of fever dream of multiples of ten… It’s got a real bottle episode vibe this one.

The siblings discuss surprising TV, and TV they refuse to be surprised by. There’s a smooth segue into songs you maybe sang at Primary School. There’s school assembly nostalgia chat. Honestly, it kind of takes them a while to get to the biology if we’re honest.

But then the science siblings settle into some plant tissue plant biology. Ron opens up conversation by asking Laura “What is a plant?” and her first attempts are “it’s nonverbal without a face” so you can fill in the blanks as to where the rest of the episode goes. Laura is distracted by apples, Ron has some issues with a fly.

From there on out it’s a pretty friendly journey through plant biology: xylem, phloem, lignin… all sorts of things. It really falls apart in the quiz after what had essentially been, a really lovely episode.

Unfortunately the stars have aligned this week to really bring out the worst of Laura. For one it’s our old nemesis physics, and for two this lesson was recorded on a Friday night when Laura did not feel good or focused whatsoever. In better news electricity is finally over. In slightly less good news we are on energy, and the particle model of matter.

Where they... are not really any better. Ron reveals his plan to become a hulking strong man and gets confused as to the structure of the podcast the science siblings are now 24 episodes in to.

It’s chemistry today, quantitative chemistry to be precise. Quantitative means amounts proclaims Laura, and it’s her last helpful addition to the podcast.

They argue an awful lot about a lot of things in here - but then, there’s beautiful light at the end of the tunnel as Ron and Laura discuss organic chemistry and why our bodies crave certain molecules. Molecular biology really shines in its moment uniting them.

Then there’s a bit where they cover closed systems, and things are less sexy and exciting again. But, it’s in the syllabus so you’d best believe they're covering it!

Listen folks, we mustn't lie to you: Ron is padding the episode. For the first time ever Ron really wants Laura to be as distracting as possible because there’s not enough of the syllabus to make a whole episode so he’s finishing up something small and saving quantitative chemistry for next time. We are specifically looking at carbon, how carbon bonds. We get on to diamonds and how and why they are strong and beautiful.

Then we move onto graphite and why even though graphite and diamond are made of the same thing, they are very differently behaving substances.

This week, at Ron’s insistence, the science siblings take on the spooky science of Halloween! Ron talks to Laura about the science of reanimation and zombies. He’s the most excited and happy you will ever hear him!

Ron talks about the science behind Frankenstein, and the developments in medicine that led to the interest in reanimation. There’s a reappearance of the Maki song, but with altered lyrics. They cover tobacco enemas, trepanning, drowning rescue techniques and other macabre details.

This week, it’s biology which are usually our happy balmy waters, but this week we have to look at the very serious subject of coronary heart disease, via coronation chicken, raisins and Danny Champion of the World. While we don’t go out of our way to be insensitive, it is a lighthearted podcast and we are our usual selves so bear in mind that if heart attacks or heart disease are likely to be a bit close to the bone for you it might be best to skip this one.

You probably heard the deep sad sighs at the time of recording but it's back to physics this week, and the siblings are fuming to realise they are still on electricity. But, Ron has a trick up his sleeve this week in the form of an interactive website! Can Laura take it seriously enough to learn or will the batteries just burn for eternity? Eburnity.

Ron walks Laura through the changes in state occurring at melting, freezing and condensing points on the journey of matter as energy is applied to it. Ron takes Laura on a journey with blood through the heart and all its vestibules, out into the lungs for a minute and back into the heart.
