We take a deep dive into their fascinating new release The Zappa House Concert, a historic recording that captures a private 1996 performance by the Meridian Arts Ensemble at the Los Angeles home of legendary composer and musician Frank Zappa.

After several years arranging Zappa’s music for brass quintet and drums, the ensemble eventually had the chance to meet with Zappa in 1992. Although Zappa passed away in 1993, the ensemble later performed a special house concert in 1996 at the Zappa residence for invited guests, preserving a unique musical moment connected to his legacy.

The Meridian Arts Ensemble was founded in 1987 by students from Juilliard School and Manhattan School of Music and has since become one of the most innovative brass ensembles in contemporary music.

In this conversation, we explore the story behind the recording, the ensemble’s musical journey, and the powerful influence of Frank Zappa’s music on their work.

We caught up with Jeff to talk about his 2026 album ATX Rhythm and his remarkable journey in the world of jazz. This new project is a love letter to his adopted home state of Texas, blending original compositions with collaborations and interpretations of beloved jazz standards.

Lionel comes from one of America’s most iconic musical families. He is the son of jazz legend Freddy Cole, nephew of the legendary Nat King Cole, and cousin to Natalie Cole. Carrying that rich legacy forward, Lionel has built a remarkable career of his own across genres.

Beyond his solo artistry, Lionel is widely known for co-writing Through the Rain for Mariah Carey, and for arranging her Super Bowl performance of The Star-Spangled Banner with the Boston Pops. His collaborations include work with Joss Stone, John Legend, Van Hunt, Randy Jackson, and Rickie Lee Jones.

Dr. Gennari is a Professor of English and Critical Race and Ethnic Studies at the University of Vermont and an American Studies–trained U.S. cultural historian specializing in jazz and popular music, race and ethnicity, Italian American culture, food, sports, and cultural criticism. He is also the author of the 2017 book Flavor and Soul: Italian America at Its African American Edge.

In this conversation, we explore how a small New England town — Lenox, Massachusetts — became an unlikely home for jazz in the 1950s. The Jazz Barn chronicles the story of the Music Inn in the Berkshire Hills, where a barn, icehouse, and greenhouse were transformed into a groundbreaking cultural hub for performances, seminars, and cross-cultural exchange.

There’s an effervescence to the music as it introduces new ears to the storied sound of Kansas City jazz and blues—full of style, attitude, and well-nourished blues ancestry.

Kansas City O’Clock delivers a big-band and swing-driven approach to the blues, featuring honking saxophones and exciting, high-energy arrangements. Mike Bourne continues to specialize in jump blues, swing, and roots music, keeping the Kansas City tradition alive while pushing it forward.

Anita Dixon-Brown served as the former Executive Director of the legendary Mutual Musicians Foundation, and she played a pivotal role in securing Kansas City’s designation as a UNESCO Creative City of Music—a global recognition rooted in decades of jazz excellence and cultural preservation.

Born on September 26, 1956, Anita left us suddenly on January 4, 2026, at the age of 69. Though her time was far too short, her influence on jazz, arts advocacy, cultural equity, and historic preservation was towering and enduring. Her work ensured that Kansas City’s jazz legacy was not only honored, but protected and amplified on the world stage.

In this retrospective, we reflect on Anita’s life and legacy through the voices of Kansas City musicians and cultural leaders, including Lonnie McFadden, along with friends and collaborators from near and far. Their words paint a portrait of a woman whose leadership, grace, and unwavering dedication shaped generations of artists and preserved one of America’s most vital jazz institutions.

Long live Anita Dixon-Brown.
Her legacy resonates.
Her impact endures.
And she will never, ever be forgotten.

Skybound is a deeply personal musical tribute to Laurent’s dear friend, the late violinist and pilot Ben Powell. Written shortly after Ben’s passing, the work was later recorded by an ensemble of first-class musicians, many of whom were close friends and long-time collaborators.

Suzanne Waldowski’s journey into jazz is a unique one. A lifelong fan of the American Songbook, she began by hosting intimate house concerts in her home. That passion grew into presenting more than 20 concerts a year across the country, and ultimately launching her own jazz label, Songbook Ink. Swinging in the Holidays is the label’s first release and sets the tone for its mission: honoring tradition while spotlighting the next generation of jazz artists.

Joining her is Champian Fulton, widely regarded as one of the finest musicians in jazz today. With Ancestral, John O’Gallagher casts off his old skin—fundamentally altering his studies, sense of homeland, and creative life to chart a bold new future. Simon’s musical journey began in Australia, first on piano before Louis Armstrong’s sound pulled him toward the trumpet for good. Released on Brian’s label Hollistic MusicWorks, It’s About Time marks Jason’s first release solely as a composer. The nine-track album was co-produced by Jason and Brian and features an ensemble of heavy-hitters, including tenor saxophonist Walt Weiskopf, trombonist Steve Davis, pianist Michael Weiss, bassist Ugonna Okegwo, and drummer Andy Watson.

Jason’s musical journey stretches back to the ’60s and ’70s when, as a young jazz devotee, he transcribed hundreds of solos while developing his voice as a composer. Brian Lynch, meanwhile, is a towering figure in both Latin jazz and straight-ahead jazz, known for his electrifying sound, deep musical knowledge, and legacy of collaboration with some of the greatest names in the music.

Originally from Syracuse, NY and now based in Boulder, Colorado, Kat is a deeply curious, creative science educator whose love for swing dancing helped ignite her musical path. A Colorado Conservatory for the Jazz Arts (CCJA) trained musician, she is the featured vocalist with the Denver Jazz Orchestra and also leads both a jazz quintet and sextet. Tom’s love of Brazilian music began in childhood, listening to Sergio Mendes and Brasil ’66 records his parents played. Over the years, he’s performed Brazilian and Latin jazz with a wide range of artists, blending authenticity with deep rhythmic sensitivity. Born in Newark, New Jersey, Tom started on drums in third grade, and at age ten, his mother took him to see the Dave Brubeck Quartet, where he met legendary drummer Joe Morello — a moment that changed everything. By the mid-1970s, he settled in Philadelphia and has been an essential part of the scene ever since.
