Teaching Kubera a Lesson

Once the God of wealth Kubera became very proud of his prosperity. He started throwing lavish parties to host all the Gods, to showcase his wealth. He invited Mahadeva many times, but Mahadev he refused. Kubera started visiting Mahadeva at Kailash and started offering Him jewels and ornaments. Mahadeva was not impressed by such offerings, but he sensed Kubera’s arrogance and decided to teach him a lesson.

Next time when Kubera invited Mahadeva for his party, Mahadeva declined the invitation as usual, however he suggested his son Ganesh would visit instead.

Kubera welcomed Ganapati in his lavish abode and offered him food. Ganapati ate whatever Kubera offered, but was still not satisfied, so he asked for more food. Kubera served more food, which was also consumed by Ganapati. Vinayak kept eating whatever Kubera offered and still demanded for more. In the end Kubera ran out of food to serve, but Ganapati was still hungry.

To protect himself from Ganapati’s wrath, Kubera went running to Mahadeva and requested for his help. Knowing that he had learned his lesson, Mahadev suggested that Kuberhe prays to Mata Parvati. Kubera pleaded to Mata Parvati forto help.

Mata Parvati went to Kubera’s palace and offered a Modak to Ganapati. Ganapati ate the Modak offered by his mother and was instantly full. Kubera learned a lesson in humility and never again bragged about his possessions.

Analasura

Analasura was a demon who was born out of Yama and was made of fire. He could burn anything just by looking at themit. When Analasura started destroying the world with his extreme fire emitting eyes, all the Gods became worried and upon Guru Brihaspati’s advice prayed to Ganapati.

Ganapati appeared in the form of a small boy and challenged Analasura. Analasura got angry at the baby Ganesha and tried to burn him too, but because of his small size he could not hit him with his fire. Finally, when the demon charged at Ganesha, he grew in size and swallowed the demon.

The demon started causing massive heat inside Ganapati’s stomach. All the Gods tried their best to calm the heat. Indra requested a cool moon to adorn Ganapati, Brahmadev offered his mind born daughters Riddhi and Siddhi to fan around him, Shivaji offered a thousand headed snake to wrap around his stomach, Vishnuji offered lotus flowers and Varuna dev showered him with cold water.

When all these efforts could not calm the heat inside Ganapati, 88000 Rishis led by Kashyap rishi offered Ganapati 21 blades of Bermuda grass each, this eventually calmed the heat making Durva or Doob Ganapati’s favourite.

Birth of Maruds

After both her sons Hiranyaksha and Hiranyakashipu were killed, devi Diti was overtaken by grief. In order to avenge the death of her sons, she tried to please her husband Kashyap rishi, in order to get a son who would kill Indra.

Indra disguised himself and started living with devi Diti and served her.

One day Indra shrunk in size and entered Diti’s womb. He cut the baby growing inside her into 7 pieces. It didn’t kill the baby, in fact there were now 7 babies who started crying. So Indra kept saying, “Ma Rud.. Ma Rud.” and cut them into 7 pieces each. Because of Narayana’s blessings Diti gave birth to 49 babies.

When she saw 49 babies and Indra with them she enquired Indra about this. Indra told her everything honestly and said, these 49 Maruds are gods, and are his brothers, and Gods and would live with him in heaven.

Devi Diti forgave Indra and blessed him and her 49 sons.

Vishwarupa

Kashyap rishi’s wife devi Aditi had twelve sons, Vivaswana, Aryama, Pusha, Twashta, Savita, Bhag, Dhata, Vidhata, Varuna, Mitra, Indra and Trivikrama. विवस्वान, अर्यमा, पूषा, त्वष्टा, सविता, भग, धाता, विधाता, वरुण, मित्र, इन्द्र और त्रिविक्रमTogether they are called the twelve Adityas.

Twashta was married to rachana, the younger sister of the Daityas, Rachana and they had two sons - Sannivesha and Vishwarupa. सन्निवेश और विश्वरूप

When Devguru Brihaspati abandoned the Gods because of an insult by Indra, the Gods decided to appoint Vishwarupa as their preceptor.

Story of Ajamila

In the ancient times in the city of Kanyakubja, lived a brahmin named Ajamila. Ajamila had no qualities of a Brahmin, and he instead he spent his time in doing wrong by others. He would rob people or con them to earn a livelihood.

He spent all his life like this. He had ten sons. He loved the youngest one among them the most and named him “Narayana”. He would spend his old age playing with Narayana and would not eat before feeding young Narayana.

When Ajamila’s time came, agents of Yama appeared before him to take him to Mrityuloka. Ajamila got scared and started calling out to his son, Narayana… Narayana.

When agents of Bhagwaan Vishnu heard the sound of Narayana, they rushed there and stopped the Yamadutas from taking him away.

Ajamila heard the conversation between the agents of Narayana and Yamadutas. This conversation made him realise his wrong ways. He became a changed man. He left all his vices and started spending time in praying to Bhagwaan. In the end, because of these good deeds, he found a place in Vaikunthaloka.

Rebirth of Daksha Prajapati

After Maharaj Prithu, his son Vijitashwa विजिताश्व became the king. His son was Havirdhan हविर्धान and grandson Bahirshad. बर्हिषद Bahirshad was married to the daughter of the ocean Shatdruti शतद्रुति. They had ten sons, who were collectively called Prachetas प्रचेता. The Prachetas worshipped Mahadev and Bhagwaan Vishnu for many years.

With Narayana’s blessings they married Kandu Rishi and Apsara Pramalocha’s daughter Marisha मारिषा, who was raised by trees and Chandra. Marisha gave birth to Daksh. Brahmadev’s son Daksh Prajapati had to get rid of his old body because of being disrespectful towards Mahadev and was reborn as Marisha’s son.

He also became Prajapati in Chakshusha Manvantara चाक्षुष मन्वन्तर

Mahadev Vs Hanuman ji

According to the Padma Purana, during Shriram’s Ashwamedh yagya, the sacrificial horse was stopped by Mahadev’s ardent devotee King Veermani of Devpur. This resulted into a massive battle between Shriram’s army lead by Shatrughna and Bharat’s son Pushkal along with Bajarangbali. When Veermani’s army started losing he requested for Mahadev’s help.

Mahadev heard the cries of his devotee and came to his rescue along with Veerbhadra and Nandi. Massive battle ensued, which resulted in Pushkal and Shatrughna getting unconscious. At this point Hanuman ji remembered the name of Shriram and faced Mahadev.

The duel went on for many days, in the end Shivaji fired his Pashupat missile, which was absorbed by Hanuman ji due to Brahmadev’s boon to him.

Eventually Shriram came to the battlefield to stop this battle. Shivaji asked Veermani to surrender to Shriram and revived everyone.

Hanuman ji Vs Bharat ji

When Lakshman ji was lying unconscious on the battlefield after a duel with Meghnad, Sushena Vaidya was called to treat him. The healer of the monkey clan needed Sanjivani herb from Dronagiri mountain to revive Lakshman ji. Because of his speed, Hanuman ji was given the task tohe retrieve the lifesaving herb.

When Hanuman ji reached the mountain, he could not identify the herb, so without losing much time, he decided to carry the entire mountain with him.

When Hanuman ji was flying in the sky carrying the entire Dronagiri mountain, he was spotted by Bharat ji, who was the caretaker of Ayodhya in the absence of Shriram.

Bharat ji mistook Hanuman ji for some demon who was trying to attack Ayodhya, so he shot an arrow at him. Since the arrow was shot with the name of Shriram, hanumanjihe did not counter it and got hurt.

When Hanuman ji fell on the ground, he narrated the entire incident to Bharat ji about the battle going on at Lanka and Lakshman’s coma.

Bharat ji regretted his action and offered his help in sending Hanuman ji to Lanka faster

Hanuman ji Vs Bheema

Hanuman ji Vs Bheema

Hanuman ji and Bheema were both sons of the wind God, Pavan. So, when Hanuman ji sensed his younger brother becoming too proud of his physical prowess, he decided to teach him a lesson in humility.

Once during the Pandava’s exile Hanumanji appeared on the path of Bheema, disguised as an old monkey. The old monkey was resting on a narrow path in the jungle, with his tail blocking the way. When Bheema was passing through, he asked the monkey to remove his tail from the path so that he can cross. The monkey told Bheema to do it himself.

Bheema tried his best but despite using all his strength, he could not move the tail even by an inch. It is then the monkey revealed himself as Hanumanji and taught Bheema a lesson in humility. Bheema learned his lesson and sought blessings from his elder brother.

Bajarangbali blessed Bheema and promised to grace the chariot of Arjuna with his divine presence in the form of a monkey banner.

Hanuman ji Vs Balaram ji

Once Balaram ji faced a monkey named Dvivida from Treta Yuga. He was a general in Sugriva’s army. He had become arrogant and had started troubling people. Balaram ji confronted the monkey and killed him in a duel.

This victory made Balaram ji overconfident about his physical strength. Shrikrishna decided to teach his brother a lesson and requested for help from Hanuman ji.

One day Hanuman ji appeared in the form of a normal monkey and started creating nuisance in Balaram ji’s garden. Balaram ji came running and challenged tohe monkey ftoor a duel. Balaram ji used all his strength but failed to overpower the monkey. At this point Shrikrishna stopped the duel and requested Bajarangbali to reveal himself.

Balaram ji learned his lesson and sought forgiveness from Hanuman ji.

Gandhari’s Curse to ShriKrishna

Mother of the Kauravas, Gandhari blamed Shrikrishna for causing all this death and destruction and cursed him that the way her entire lineage hads been destroyed, one day the sameday same thing will happen to his Yaduvansh.

After this curse Shrikrishna returned to Dwarka and took all his relatives to Prabhas. He instructed his clan to conduct charitable acts while waiting for their impending doom.

One day Satyaki and Kritavarma got into a debate over their actions during the Mahabharata war. They started insulting each other and the debate got heated. Satyaki ended up cutting Kritavarma’s head.

This resulted into massive infighting among all the Yadava’s who ended up killing each other including Shrikrishna’s sons and friends. Only Babru and Daruk survived.

Yudhishthira’s Curse to All Women

Urvashi’s Curse to Arjuna

Before the Kurukshetra war Arjuna visited Alkapuri to seek divine weapons from Gods to prepare for the inevitable war. There he met Apsara Urvashi, who got infatuated with him and made advances towards him. Arjuna however, stopped her saying he considers Urvashi like his mother and cannot respond to her advances. Hearing this Urvashi got angry and cursed Arjuna to become a neuter and live among women as a dancer.

When Arjuna told Indra about this curse, Indra convinced Urvashi to reduce the period of her curse to one year, so that it can help Arjuna to liveing in disguise during their one year of incognito period.

Because of this curse Arjuna lived in Matsya kingdom as Brihannala during their one year of Agyatvas.

Kindam Rishi’s Curse to Pandu

Once Maharaj Pandu was hunting in a forest. He sensed some movement from behind the bushes and thinking it was a deer, shot an arrow. The arrow hit rishi Kindam and his wife, who were enjoying an intimate moment together disguised as deer.

When Pandu realised what he had done, he pleaded forgiveness for his actions, however Kindam rishi cursed Pandu. As per Kindam rishi’s curse Pandu would die the moment he gets intimate with any woman.

Following this, Pandu assigned his blind elder brother Dhritarashtra as the caretaker king of Hastinapur and started living in the jungle with his wives Kunti and Madri. the Pandava brothers were born by using the boon of rishi Durvasa to Kunti, using which she could summon any God and seek a child from them.

Once Pandu was alone with his wife Madri and he could not control himself. The moment he decided to get intimate with her he died

The Limping Sage

During the fight between Bhagwaan Parshuram and Kartavirya Arjuna, Kartavirya’s soldiers started raiding the Ashrams. After Bhagwaan Parshuram killed Kartavirya, his sons attacked various Ashrams.

During one such raid they attacked the Ashram of Parashara rishi. The great rishi tried to stop them and was hurt in his leg in the process.

After this Parashara rishi started walking with a limp and became famous as the Limping Sage.

Parashara’s Yajna

Parashara grew up thinking, his grandfather Brahmarshi Vashishtha was his father. When he found out the truth and that his father and uncles were killed by a demon under the influence of rishi Vishwamitra, he decided to conduct a yajna to exterminate all the demons from the world.

Rakshasa from all over the world started burning in the fire of Parashara’s yajna. When Pulastya rishi noticed this destruction he requested Vashishtha rishi to stop his grandson. Rishi Vashishtha told Parashara rishi to stop his yajna for it was not correct to blame all the Rakshasa for the death of his father.

Parashara rishi eventually calmed down and stopped the yajna. Pulastya rishi blessed the rishi with divine knowledge.

Parashara Rishi’s Birth

Once Brahmarshi Vashishtha’s eldest son Shakti Maharshi was going somewhere on a narrow path. On the way he met King Kalmashpada of Ikshwaku dynasty. They both got into an argument over who has the right to cross first. The argument escalated to a level that the King hit the Rishi with a whip. The Angry rishi cursed the king to become a demon.

The demon king under the influence of rishi Vishwamitra killed and ate Shakti Maharshi and his brothers.

Rishi Vashishtha was so grief stricken that he decided to end his life. After multiple failed attempts at ending his life he met Shakti Maharshi’s wife Adrushyanti, who was pregnant. She gave birth to a boy, who grew up in the hermitage of his grandfather Vashishtha, thinking he was his father. The boy made Vashishtha rishi forget about his grief and gave him a reason to live, thus he was named Parashara.

पाराशर ऋषि का जन्म

एक बार ब्रह्मर्षि वशिष्ठ के पुत्र शक्ति महर्षि एक सँकरे पहाड़ी रास्ते से कहीं जा रहे थे। रास्ते में उनकी भेंट सामने से आते हुए राजा कल्माषपाद से हुई। कौन पहले रस्ता पार करे इस बात पर दोनों में विवाद छिड़ गया। दोनों का विवाद इतना बढ़ गया की कल्माषपाद शक्ति मुनि को कोड़े मारने लगे। क्रोध में आकर शक्ति महर्षि ने राजा को राक्षस बन जाने का शाप दे दिया।

राक्षस बने कल्माषपाद ने शक्ति महर्षि को खा लिया और बाद में ऋषि विश्वामित्र के प्रभाव में वशिष्ठ ऋषि के अन्य पुत्रों को भी मार दिया।

जब वशिष्ठ ऋषि को अपने सभी पुत्रों की मृत्यु का पता चला तो दुःख के कारण उन्होंने आत्महत्या करने की सोची, परन्तु अनेक प्रयासों के बाद भी विफल रहे। जब वशिष्ठ ऋषि अपने आश्रम वापस आए तो उन्होंने शक्ति महर्षि की पानी अदृश्यन्ति को गर्भावस्था में पाया। उन्होंने एक पुत्र को जन्म दिया जो अपने दादा के साथ उनके आश्रम में बड़ा होने लगा।

अपने पौत्र को देखकर वशिष्ठ ऋषि का शोक मिट गया और उनको जीवन जीने की नई प्रेरणा मिली, इसीलिए उन्होंने बालक का नाम पाराशर रखा।

Hidimba Devi Temple

Located in Manali, Himanchal Pradesh, this temple is dedicated to Bhima’s wife, devi Hidimba. The sanctuary is built over a huge rock jutting out of the ground which was worshiped as an image of the deity.

During their time living in forests Bhima had killed the demon Hidimb and married his sister Hidimba.
Hidimba’s son Ghatotkach fought in the Kurukshetra war and was instrumental in getting rid of the infallible Vasawi Dart of Indra from Karna.

After their marriage Devi Hidimba didn’t accompany Bhima, she stayed here instead performing penance and eventually ascended to heaven.

During Navaratri lots of devotees visit this temple.

Arunachalesvara Temple

Situated at the base of Annamalai Hills in Tamilnadu, this temple is dedicated to the Agni Linga form of Bhagwaan Shankar. It is believed that Mahadev graces this place in his Ardhanarishwar form.

According to the Pauranik text, once Bhagwaan Brahma and Bhagwaan Vishnu got into a debate over who is more important for the functioning of the universe. When the debate could not be settled, Mahadev appeared between them in the form of an endless pillar of fire.

Both Brahmadev and Bhagwaan Vishu could not locate the ends of this fire pillar, however in order to prove his superiority Brahmadev lied. Mahadev got angry at this lie. He took the form of Kaal-Bhairav and cut one of the heads of Brahmadev.

Peruviruthy Malanada

Situated in Kollum District Kerala, Peruviruthy Malanada Temple is probably the only temple dedicated to Kaurava Prince Duryodhana. In this temple Kaurava prince is being worshipped for many generations. There are many other temples in the vicinity dedicated to Gandhari, Dushala, Karna etc.

There is no idol in this temple, instead there is an empty platform that is worshipped as Duryodhan’s throne.

It is believed that during the incognito period of Pandava’s exile Duryodhana along traveled all over the world trying to find them. During one such expedition he landed in this village. He was tired and thirsty, and was offered a drink by an elderly woman. Pleased with this Duryodhan rewarded the village with wealth and one hundred acre land.

Even today the tax generated from that land is called Duryodhanan, which means Duryodhan’s wealth.

Mitravinda

Mitravinda was princess of Avanti. Her brother Vinda and Anuvinda were Duryodhan’s friends and wanted her to marry him in order to strengthen their friendship with Hastinapur crown. However, Mitravinda wanted to marry Shrikrishna. When Vinda and Anuvinda organized her sister’s swayamvar, they deliberately did not invite Shrikrishna.

Balaram told Shrikrishna that Mitravinda is in love with him and he should gate crash the swayamvar and marry her. Shrikrishna sent his sister Subhadra to get a sense of Mitravinda’s heart.

Once certain, Shrikrishna and Balaram crashed the swayamvar, where Mitravinda chose Shrikrishna as her husband. Shrikrishna and Balaram defeated Mintravinda’s brothers and Duryodhan along with other suitors and married Mitravinda.

Jambvanti

Jambvanti was the daughter of Jambwan, who was a general in Shriram’s army in battle against Ravan. During the search of Syamantak gem Shrikrishna and Jambwan got into a duel, which lasted many days.

In the end Jambwan realised that Shrikrishna was an incarnation of his beloved Shriram and sought forgiveness. He proposed to marry his daughter Jambvanti to Shrikrishna in return for giving him the precious gem. Shrikrishna agreed and married Jambvanti.

Satyabhama

An incarnation of mother earth, Devi Satyabhama was the daughter of Satrajit, a Yadav king of Andhak clan. Satrajit was in possession of the divine Syamantak gem, which was gifted to him by the Sun. When the precious gem was lost, Satrajit accused Shrikrishna of stealing it.

Shrikrishna went into search of the gem, in order to get rid of the accusations and found the gem in possession of Jambwan. Shrikrishna took the gem from Jambwan and returned it to Satrajit.

Pleased with this Satrajit decided to marry her daughter Satyabhama to Shrikrishna.

Devi Satyabhama accompanied Shrikrishna in battle against demon Narakasur, and was instrumental in killing the demon

Rukmini

Rukmini was an incarnation of Devi Laksmi and was born as the daughter of Bhishmak, king of Vidarbha. Her brother Rukmi wanted to marry her to his friend Shishupal, however she wanted Shrikrishna as her husband. When her brother did not listen to her, she invited Shrikrishna to abduct her from her palace.

After receiving Rukmini’s invitation Shrikrishna rescued her from her palace without any delay. When Rukmi tried to stop them Shrikrishna defeated him in battle, however he allowed him to live upon Rukmini’s request.

Devi Rukmini was the most important of Shrikrishna’s wives, who gave him ten sons including Pradyumna.

Vinda-Anuvinda

Vinda and Anuvinda were sons of King Jayasena of Avanti and brothers of Mitravinda. Both were friends and ally of Duryodhan and did not like Shrikrishna for his closeness to Pandava.

When Mitravinda chose Shrikrishna in her swayamvar, both brothers opposed this and fought Shrikrishna. Shrikrishna defeated them in battle and married Mitravinda.

During Yudhishthir’s Rajsuya yagya Sahadev fought and defeated both brothers to bring Avanti under Yudhishthir’s control.

In the battle of Kurukshetra both brothers fought alongside their friend Duryodhan and were killed by Arjuna in battle.

Rukmi

Rukmi was the son of King Bhishmak of Vidarbha and elder brother of Rukmini. He wanted Rumini to marry his friend Shishupal, but Rukmini wanted to marry Shrikrishna so she secretly invited him to abduct her from Vidarbha.

Shrikrishna abducted Rukmini and was challenged by Rukmi. Shrikrishna defeated Rukmi, however on Rukmini’s request spared his life and let him go after shaving his head.

Later during Mahabharat war Rukmi approached both Arjuna and Duryodhan to fight from their side in the war, however both of them rejected his offer because of his boastful behavior.

In the end Rukmi was killed by Balaram for cheating in a game of dice.

Dantavakra

Shrikrishna’s father Vasudev’s sister Shrutadevi was married to king Vriddhasharman of Karusha kingdom. Their son was Dantavakra. Dantavatra, like his cousin Shishupal was also an ally of Jarasandh and an enemy of Shrikrishna.

During Yudhishthir’s Rajsuya yagya, he was defeated by Sahadev and he was present in the assembly when Shrikrishna killed Shishupal.

After the yagya when Shrikrishna was on his way back to Dwarka, Dantavakra along with his friend Salva attacked Shrikrishna to avenge the killing of Shishupal.

Shrikrishna killed Dantavakra with his mace and relieved him from the curse, sending him back to Vaikuntha.

Shishupal

Due to the curse of the four Kumars, the gatekeepers of Vaikuntha Jay and Vijay were born as Shrikrishna’s sworn enemies Shishupal and Dantvakra in Dwapar Yuga.

Shrikrishna’s father Vasudev’s sister Shrutashrava was married to the king of Chedi, and Shishupal was their son. When Shishupal was born he was born with a third eye and two extra hands. After his birth a divine voice announced that whoever’s touch can cause the baby to drop his extra limbs will kill him.

When Shrikrishna came to visit his aunt and lifted his cousin in his lap, his third eye disappeared and extra limbs dropped on the floor. At that moment Shishupal’s mother made Shrikrishna promise that he will forgive one hundred mistakes of her son.

Shishupal grew up to become Jarasandh’s ally and helped him in attacking Shrikrishna on many occasions. During Yudhishthir’s Rajsuya yagya when Shrikrishna was given the honor of first arghya, Shishupal started abusing Shrikrishna and others present in the assembly. After his hundred mistakes Shrikrishna relieved him from his curse by cutting his head and sent him back to Vaikunthalok.

Shrikrishna’s father Vasudev had a son from one of his wives, Sutanu, the princess of Kashi. His name was Paundrak. Since Vasudev spent many years inside Kansa’s prison after his marriage with Devaki, Paundrak grew up in Kashi and inherited the throne.

Paundrak was an ally of Shrikrishna’s sworn enemy Jarasandh. He would call himself the real Shrikrishna and imitate him in every way, including calling himself Vasudev.

Shrikrishna tried his best to talk him out of this charade but he did not listen. Eventually Shrikrishna killed him in battle and created a circle of fire around his kingdom trapping and killing the priests who would worship Paundrak as Shrikrishna.

Bhagirath – Who brought Ganga to earth

Sagar’s remaining son Asamanjas had a son Anshuman, who became heir to the throne.

In the line of Asamanjas was born Bhagirath.

Bhagirath performed severe penance to Brahmadev and Mahadev seeking their help in bringing the divine river Ganga to earth. He eventually succeeded in bringing Ganga to earth and used the divine water to perform last rites of his ancestors who died due to curse of Kapil muni.

Sagar – Who revived the Ikshwaku Dynasty

In the lineage of Harishchandra, there was a king named Bahuk. Bahuk lost his kingdom to his enemies and started living in the jungle at the hermitage of rishi Aurva. Bahuk died of old age and weakness.

After Bahuk’s death, his wife decided to burn herself but was stopped by Aurva rishi, for the queen was pregnant with the heir to the dynasty.

When enemies of the dynasty found out about the queen’s pregnancy, they tried to cause miscarriage by feeding her poison, GAR.

The boy survived and was born with the GAR, hence was called Sagar.

Sagar grew up to become an illustrious ruler who defeated all his enemies and revived the rule of the great solar dynasty.

Mandhata – Who made even Ravan fear him

Mandhata was born to the pregnant king Yuvanashva, with the blessings of Devraj Indra. He was named Trasdasyu, because he was feared by every adharmi.

After winning over the entire world, Mandhata attacked Lanka in order to complete his total domination of earth. A massive battle ensued between Ravan and Mandhata. After many days of stalemate, the battle was stopped by Rishi Pulastya and Rishi Galav.

After ruling the earth for many years, Mandhata decided to conquer heaven. Indra pointed to Madhupuri saying you first capture that and then come to heaven. Madhupuri was ruled by Asura Lavan, who possessed the Trishula of Mahadev. When Mandhata attacked Madhupuri, he was killed by Lavan using Mahadev’s infallible Trishula.

Yuvanashva – The Pregnant King

In the lineage of Purajnjay after many generations, Yuvanashva became the king. Yuvanashava had a hundred wives but no son. In order to produce an heir, he went to live in the Ashram of Bhrigu rishi with his wives where they performed a yagya for Devraj Indra.

One night a thirsty Yuvanshava accidently drank the enchanted water from the yagna meant for his wives. As a result of that Yuvanashva became pregnant.

Later Bhrigu rishi cut open the belly of King Yuvanashva to give birth to a baby. Indradev himself visited to witness the birth of this unique child.

When the child started crying due to hunger, Indra put his finger in his mouth to calm him, saying, “Mam Dhata.”; thus, giving the name Mandhata to the baby.

Puranjaya – Ikshwaku’s Grandson

Ikshwaku’s eldest son Vikukshi had a son named Puranjay. Towards the end of Satyuga, Indra came to him seeking his help in the ongoing Devasura Samgram. Puranjay agreed to help Indra only if he agrees to become his ride.

Indra transformed himself into a giant bull. Purajnay fought in the battle against the demons riding that bull. He won the battle and returned the kingdom of heaven to Indra.

He was also known as Indravaha for he rode Indra. For riding the bull in the battle his another name became Kukutstha.

Kritavarma

At the end of the Mahabharat war, only three warriors from Kaurava side survived; Kripacharya, Ashwatthama and Kritavarma.

Kritavarma was the commander of Shrikrishna’s Narayani sena and Duryodhan’s friend. Because of Shrikrishna’s promise to Duryodhan, he fought for the Kauravas in the great war. On the last day of the battle he accompanied Ashwatthama inside the Pandav camp and helped him in killing the five sleeping sons of Draupadi.

Many years later when Kritavarma taunted Satyaki for the unfair killing of Bhurishrava, Satyaki called him out for killing helpless Uppandavas. This escalated into a full blown fight with various Yadav warriors taking sides. This fight resulted in the destruction of the Yadav clan.

Yuyutsu

Vikarna

Lakshmana

Lakshamana was the daughter of Duryodhan and Bhanumati. Shrikrishna’s son Shamb was in love with her and he abducted her from her swayamvar. An angry Duryodhan sent his entire army to stop and capture them. Shamb could not defeat the Hastinapur army and was captured.

Later Balaram ji approached Duryodhan asking him to release his nephew, but Duryodhan declined. This angered Baldau and he started pulling the entire Hastinapur capital with his plough to drown it inside the Yamuna river. Afraid of this Duryodhana sought forgiveness and agreed for the union of his daughter and Shrikrishna’s son.

Babruvahana

Bhurishrava

Bhurishrava was son of Somdatta and grandson of Bahlika. He played a key role in the killing of Abhimanyu.

When Arjuna taunted him for his participation in the dishonorable act of killing Abhimanyu against the rules of engagement, he felt ashamed. He threw away his weapons and sat down on the battlefield.

At this point Satyaki leapt forward and beheaded a weaponless Bhurishrava with his sword.

When Kritavarma taunted Satyaki recalling this incident, this became the cause of infighting among Yadav warriors and caused the destruction of the entire Yadav clan as cursed by Gandhari.

Bahlika

Tara Protects Sugriva

Lakshman in his fit of rage entered the palace of Kishkindha, an afraid Sugriva ran to his now wife Tara for protection.

Tara talked to Lakshman ji and pacified him. She convinced him to pardon Sugriva and promised that the entire army of Kishkindha would participate in the search for devi Sita right away.

Kaikeyi’s Valor

Kaikeyi was the daughter of the king of Kekaya, Ashwapati. Kaikeyi was raised by her father, who trained her in all the duties of a king, including battlecraft. Since she had grown without a mother, her maid Manthara had great influence on her.

After her marriage to the King of Ayodhya, Dashrath, she once accompanied him during Devasur sangram, where Dashrath was fighting alongside Indra against Sambarasura.

During the battle Dashrath got wounded and his chariot wheel dislodged. Kaikeyi, who was his charioteer, helped save his life, prompting him to offer her two boons. Kaikeyi did not ask for anything at that point in time.

The Fall of Tripura Cities

After fall of Tarakasura, by the hands of Kartikeya his three sons Tarakaksha, Vidyunmali and Kamalaksha (together referred as Tripurasura) performed great penance to Brahmadev and got a boon that they will live in three separate cities which can only be destroyed by a single arrow, knowing that the task was impossible.

With the help of asura architect Mayasura they built three cities, which were moving constantly and would align only once in one thousand years.

Unable to control Asuras, all the Gods requested Shivji to help.

Earth became the chariot with the Sun and the Moon its wheels. Bhagwaan Vishnu took the form of a bull to pull the chariot, with Brahmadev as charioteer. Mount Meru became the bow, Vasuki naag its string. ShriHari provided the arrow with Agnidev its tip and Vayudev feathers at the end.

When the cities got aligned and time to fire the arrow came, all the Gods felt proud that they were helping Shivji in this massive task. Shivaji felt this pride and instead of firing the arrow, just looked at the cities and smiled. The cities started burning.

Brahmadev pleaded to Shivji to fire the arrow and finally he fired the arrow invoking the Pashupatastra to destroy the Tripura cities with a single arrow.

However just before the destruction he sent Nandi ahead to save his devotee Mayasura from the carnage.

After the destruction of Tripura cities Shivaji performed the tandav, which is also referred as “Tripura Nasha Nartana”. This act of destroying Tripura cities earned Shivaji the name Tripurantaka.

Sita Swayamvar

Sixth in the line of king Nimi, Devrat was given the divine bow of Shivaji for safekeeping. The bow was kept in the palace of Mithila with honor and was worshiped by the Janak clan.

Once during the reign of Janak Seeradhwaj, the Kingdom of Videh suffered a bad drought. On his kulguru rishi Shatananda’s suggestion King Janak along with his wife Sunayana ploughed the fields of Mithila. Suddenly the plough hit something inside the ground and could not move. Upon digging they discovered a little girl inside a gold box. The king adopted this little girl and named her Sita.

The bow which would normally take five thousand people to move, was once lifted by devi Sita without any assistance.

This prompted Rajarshi Janak to decide that he would marry Sita to the one who can string the divine bow of Shiva. He organized the swayamvar with this condition, however every potential suitor attending the swayamvar failed to fulfil the condition.

All the Kings and Princes could not digest this humiliation and decided to attack Mithila with their joint army.

King Janak requested Devraj Indra to help, who then sent his army to fight alongside Janak and defeat all the invaders.

Kotilingeshwara Temple, Karnataka

The holy city of Gaya, named after the demon “Gayasur'' hosts the tranquil and spiritual Vishnupad Temple. Afraid of the severe penance of Rishi Kandu, Indra sent Apsara Pramalocha to distract him. Pramalocha came to the hermitage of Rishi Kandu and started singing in her melodious voice. Hearing this, the sage opened his eyes and got captivated by the divine beauty of her. He decided to marry her and live a domestic life.

Sage Kandu was under the impression that not a single day has passed since their union. It was almost evening and he went to perform the evening rites.

Pramlocha asked her husband “where are you going?” to which he informed his intention. Confused, Pramlocha inquired, “why today, for many years have passed you never performed any rites since we met?”

Baffled Kandu could not believe his ears and demanded to know exactly how many years had passed. Pramlocha told Kandu that it has been 907 years since the day they got married. Angry Kandu ordered Pramlocha to go back to heaven and also said that he will not curse her for she has been his wife and due to this kind act of kindness God Vishnu blessed Kandu

Eventually it was Bhagirath who succeeded in bringing Ganga to earth by first pleasing Brahmadev to release Ganga from heaven and then convincing Shivaji to hold the fall of the mighty river when she descended from heaven.

Thus, Ganga came to earth and stayed here.

Kalmashpada

King Kalmashpada of Ayodhya was once going through a narrow path where he encountered the son of guru Vasishtha, Shakti maharshi coming from the opposite direction. Both started arguing over who had the right of passage and in a fit of anger Kalmashpada hit Shakti Maharshi with a whip.

This behavior from the king angered Shakti Maharshi and he cursed the King to become a demon.

Taking advantage of this situation Rishi Vishawamitra, who was witnessing this exchange from a distance, ordered demon Kinkar to possess the body of king Kalmashpada.

Under the influence of rishi Vishwamitra the demon ate Shakti Maharshi and went on killing all one hundred sons of guru Vasishtha.

Kalmashpada lived as a demon for twelve years after which he was relieved of the curse and the influence of rishi Vishwamitra by guru Vasishtha.

Trishanku

King Satyavrata had lived a life of honesty and had ruled the kingdom fairly. One day, a thought crossed his mind that he wanted to attain heaven in his mortal form. He went to Brahmrishi Vasishtha and pleaded to do the rites. Brahmrishi Vasishtha refused as such a thing was against the laws of nature. King left the hermitage with a heavy heart and went to the sons of Brahmarshi Vasishtha, who in-turn cursed the king to become a chandal, Trishanku for going against the advice of his guru.

Trishanku was deeply saddened and later met Sage Vishwamitra. Sage Vishwamitra heard the troubles of Trishanku and agreed to help him. Rishi Vishwamitra started the rituals and with the power of his penance, he made Trishanku rise up in the air and reach heaven.

But Indradev refused Trishanku entry in heaven and Trishanku started to fall back on the earth. Trishanku cried for help. The great sage stopped Trishanku mid-air but upside down.

All the Gods requested rishi Vishwamitra to stop his yagya and not go against the laws of the universe, to which the great rishi agreed. However, he did not want to break his promise to Trishanku, so he created a separate heaven for him at the place he was stuck, since then Trishanku’s heaven became a metaphor for getting stuck midway.

Seeing the defeat of his soldiers at the hands of Nandini cow, Maharaja Kaushik understood that human powers would not be able to defeat Rishi Vasishtha and he decided to go to Bhagwaan Shankar's refuge to gain knowledge of divine weapons.

After the penance of Shivji for many years, Shivji gave knowledge of divine weapons to Kaushik.

On receiving this knowledge, sage Kaushik again reached the ashram of Vasishtha Rishi and attacked the ashram with his divine weapons.

A calm-minded Guru Vasistha defeated all of Kaushik's weapons with his Brahmadand and Kaushik once again suffered defeat at the hands of Guru Vasishtha.

After this incident, Rajarshi Kaushik understood that there is only one way to defeat Brahmarshi Vashishta, by becoming a Brahmarshi like him and he again got absorbed in severe austerity.

King Kaushik

Kaushik, son of Maharaja Gandhi once reached the ashram of Brahmarshi Vasistha along with his soldiers while hunting. Brahmarshi Vasistha gave proper hospitality to Maharaj Kaushik and duly fed him and his soldiers.

When Maharaja Kaushik came to know that Sage Vashistha had a wishing Nandini cow, which made all this possible, he asked his soldiers to take that cow with them by force.

But Kaushik and his soldiers could not do anything in front of the divine powers of Nandini and they had to give up from there.

After this incident, Maharaj Kaushik decided that he would live by defeating Brahmarshi Vasistha in any way. Thus began a competition that eventually resulted in Maharaja Kaushik becoming Brahmarshi Vishwamitra.

Every year on the day of Sheetala Ashtami, mothers worship the healing goddess in order to protect their children from various disease.

भगवान शंकर के स्वेद से उत्पन्न हुए ज्वरासुर ने जब बच्चों को अपने प्रकोप का भाजन बनाना प्रारम्भ किया तो देवी आदिशक्ति ने संसार को ज्वरासुर से मुक्त करने का निश्चय किया।

महादेव ने देवी को समझाया कि ज्वरासुर को समाप्त करना संसार के संतुलन के लिए सही नहीं होगा, इसलिए उसका अन्त करने के स्थान पर उसको नियंत्रित करना उचित रहेगा।

शिवजी का सुझाव मानकर देवी ने माता शीतला के रूप में प्रकट होकर ज्वरासुर को अपने वश में कर उसे गर्दभ रूप में अपने वाहन की तरह स्वीकार किया।

Putana

When Kamsa found out that the one to cause his death is already living in Vrindavan, he got restless and started thinking about the threat to his future and how to eliminate him, so he summoned gigantic Putna and ordered her to kill Krishna.

Putna used illusion to transform herself into a beautiful maiden. She went to every home that had welcomed babies a few months before to offer her poisonous milk and because of which there was a huge cry in the village. Yashoda went out to investigate the same, leaving Krishna alone, which gave Putana the opportunity.

She took Krishna to a secluded place to nurse him with the poisonous milk. But to her surprise Krishna started to cause her pain and when it was unbearable she screamed “Please spare me O, mighty one! I can no longer bear this pain”. She utilized all her energy to detach Krishna from herself but died in the struggle. She fell with a huge thud that drew the attention of the entire village. They found Krishna unharmed and playing near the dead body of an asura.

The End of Ravana

Ravana lost his sons, brothers and all the great ministers and now his wrath had no limit. Ravana, overpowered by animosity attacked the Vanar Sena and created an outcry among them. Ravana killed many monkeys by using the Tamas weapon. Sri Rama and Lakshmana saw monkeys being brutally injured and decided to face Ravana. Lakshmana attacked Ravana with his arrows and soon a fierce battle broke out between the two. Lakshmana killed Ravana's charioteer with his arrows and broke Ravana's bow. Vibhishana killed the horses of Ravana's chariot with his club. Enraged by this, Ravana picked up a spear and attacked his brother. Lakshmana cut the spear into three parts with his arrows. This time, Ravana aimed another spear at Vibhishana. Seeing Vibhishana's life in danger, Lakshmana continuously attacked Ravana with arrows. Due to the continuous shower of arrows from Lakshmana, Ravana threw that spear towards Lakshmana. The spear hit Lakshmana's chest and he fainted from its blow. When Shri Ram saw Lakshmana collapse, he immediately went to him and took out the spear from his chest. After keeping his younger brother under the care of Hanuman ji and Sugriva, Ram ji started facing Ravana who was devoid of his chariot and thus could not face the arrows of Shri Ram and returned to Lanka

Death of Kumbha-Nikumbh

After Shri Ram and Lakshman regained consciousness, Sugriva ordered the Vanar Sena to set fire to the city of Lanka. Vanar Sena entered the city with torches in hand and started burning the city causing panic among the Rakshasas.

An Angry Ravana sent an army under the leadership of Kumbhakarna's sons Kumbh and Nikumbha to fight Sugriva’s army.

As soon as the war started, Mahabali Angad killed the asura named Kampan with a rock. Seeing this, Kumbh started to rain arrows on the Vanar Sena. Dwivida too got injured by the arrows of Kumbh. Seeing his brother hurt, Mainda attacked Kumbh, but he too fainted after being wounded by Kumbh’s arrows.

Seeing his maternal uncles being defeated in this mannerway, Mahabali Angad challenged Kumbh. A fierce battle ensued between Angad and Kumbh and finally Angad fainted after being hit by Kumbh's arrows. When Shri Ram got the news of Angad beingbecoming unconscious, he sent another army under the leadership of Mahabali Jambavan to face Kumbh.

Jambavan, Sushen and Vegadarshi attacked Kumbh with rocks and trees but Kumbh thwarted their attacks with his arrows. Then, Vanar Raj Sugriva threw many trees towards Kumbh, which too were destroyed. This made Sugriva angry and he broke Kumbh’s bow. When the bow broke, Kumbh rushed towards Sugriva and struck Sugriva's chest several times with his fist. Sugriva also struck the chest of Kumbh several times with his fist. Kumbh fell to the ground with a loud thud and lost his life.

Seeing his brother being killed, Nikumbha was filled with rage. He took a huge wooden hammer and rushed towards the Vanar Sena. On seeing Pawanputra Hanuman in front of him, he attacked his chest with his hammer but the hammer shattered to pieces after colliding with Bajrangbali's chest. A wrestling match broke out between the two great warriors. Ultimately Bajrangbali broke Nikumbha's neck and sent him to Yamlok.

Atikaya’s death

अतिकाया Atikaya, the son of Ravana's wife Dhanyamalini धन्यमलिनी, was blessed by Brahmadev that he would not be killed by the gods or demons. Atikaya was filled with rage and entered the battlefield riding on his chariot. The sound of his bow caused an uproar all around.

कुमुद, द्विविदा, मैंदा, नील और शरभ Kumud, Dwivida, Mainda, Nila and Sharabha simultaneously struck him with trees and rocks, which were easily destroyed by Atikaya. He attacked whoever came in front of him and made his way to Shri Ram and challenged him to war. Lakshman stepped up and answered his call. He stood in front of him with his bow in his hand.

Both Atikaya and Lakshmana were skilled in archery. A terrible fight broke out between them. Lakshmanji attacked Atikaya with agni astra; Atikaya summoned Surya astra to counter the attack. Both the weapons were destroyed as they hit each other in the air.

Atikaya invoked the ऐशिका Aishika weapon, which Lakshmana confronted with Aindrastra ऐंद्रास्त्र. Atikaya's Yama astra was destroyed by Lakshmana with Vayavya वायव्यास्त्र astra. The series of attack and counterattack with the divine weapons between the two went on for a long time and yet none of the warriors were ready to give up.

All of a sudden, Vayudev said in the ear of Lakshman ji that his powers are due to the boon of Brahmadev, and his end is possible only with the weapon of Brahma Dev. Adhering to Vayu Dev, Lakshman ji invoked he Brahmastra and attacked Atikaya. In his defense, Atikaya released many arrows to stop the Brahmastra coming towards him, but failed. Lakshman ji killed Atikaya, the majestic son of Ravana, and restored happiness among the Vanarsena and the Gods.

Death of Trishira

Trishira was furious due to the death of Devantak and showered arrows on Nila. Nila increased his size and faced those arrows with great valor. Once the arrows stopped raining, he threw a huge rock towards Mahodar and his elephant Sudarshan and destroyed them.

Trishira then started to attack Hanuman ji with his arrows. Hanuman ji got angry and killed the horses of Trishira's chariot. Hanuman ji was attacked by Trishira with a spear which was caught and broken by Hanuman ji by placing it on his thighs.

Trishira had still not learnt his lesson and attacked Hanumanji with a sword. Avoiding the blow of the sword, Bajrangbali struck Trishira's chest with his palm, due to which the sword dropped from his hand and he fell unconscious. As soon as Trishira regained consciousness and he rushed to attack Hanuman with his fist, Pawanputra grabbed his crown with one of his hands and beheaded him with his own sword

Devantak’s Death

After the demise of Narantaka, his brothers; Devantaka, Trishira and uncle Mahodar together attacked Angad together. With the help of rocks and trees, Angad started to attack them. But all his attacks were in vain and the asuras attacked Angad with their wooden hammer and arrows. Hanuman ji and Neel rushed to Angad’s aid. Neel threw a big rock at Trishira which was broken into pieces with arrows.

Devantak took the hammer and proceeded towards the son of the wind god. Seeing him coming towards him, Bajrangbali jumped towards him and struck him on the head with his fist as powerful as Indra's thunderbolt. Devantak's head exploded and he died in an instant.

The End of Narantak

When Kumbhkaran was killed by the hands of Shri Ram on the battlefield, Ravana sent his sons Atikaya, Trishira, Devantaka and Narantaka in the company of his own brothers- Mahodar and Mahaparshva.

Narantaka, who was riding a white horse, created an outcry in the Vanar Sena with his spear. Seeing this, Sugriva sent Angad to confront Narantaka.

Angad came in front of Narantak and challenged him. Narantaka got angry and hit Angad's chest with his spear. Narantak's spear broke after colliding with Angad's chest like a thunderbolt. After that Angad hit Narantak's horse so hard with his bare hands that the horse died on the spot.

Indrajit’s Illusions

After Angad broke Meghnad’shis chariot and killed the charioteer and the horses, Meghnad became furious and turned became invisible. Due to the boon of Brahmadev, no one was able to see Meghnad. He had created an outcry in the Vanar Sena with his arrows and because of not being visible, no one was able to attack him. When Shri Ram and Lakshman ji came to face him, he attacked them with terrible arrows. When the arrows were released from Meghnad’s bow, they turned into a snake and entered the bodies of Shri Ram and Lakshman ji.

Due to this, Shri Ram and Lakshman ji fell unconscious which caused distress in the entire Vanar Sena.

Meghnad went back to Lanka and told his father that he had killed both the sons of Dasharatha.

On the battlefieldHere, when Vibhishana saw the Vanar Sena mourning and saw Shri Ram and Lakshman ji lying unconscious, he consoled the army and told them that both of them are still alive. Vibhishana asked them to carry Shri Ram and Lakshman ji to a safe place and arrange for their treatment.

The Vanar Sena became calm after they heard Vibhishana and they started thinking of ways to bring both of them to their senses. At that time a strong wind started blowing and Garuda Dev appeared and all the serpents holding on to Shri Ram and Lakshman ji ran away in fear. As soon as they were freed from the Nagapash, Shri Ram and Lakshman ji regained their senses and Garuda Dev went back to Vaikuntha Loka.

Angad: The Messenger

After surrounding Lanka from all sides, Shri Ram sent Mahabali Angad as a messenger with the intention of giving Ravana another chance to rectify his mistake.

Earlier, Hanumanji had displayed the power of the Vanar Sena to the Lanka army by setting fire to Lanka and now Angad too, reached Lanka with the aim of doing something similar.

In the court of Ravana, Angad asked Rakshasaraj to return Sita Mata and make a peaceful pact with Shri Ram. Angad praised the mighty Shri Ram and suggested Ravana not to fight against himShri Ram.

Ravana ordered all the asuras sitting in the assembly to capture Angad. Angad first allowed all the demons to come near him without any resistance, then, demonstrating his strength, he threw all the demons away in one stroke and broke the palace roof. After showcasing his strength, he roared his name loudly and jumped into the sky while theand asuras present there could do nothing about it.

Ravan’s Spies

The news of the Vanar Sena successfully crossing the sea fell oin the ears of Ravana. Worried, Lankapati sent two of his spies, Shuka and Saran, to estimate the strength of Shri Ram's army.

Both the spies disguised themselves as monkeys and joined the army. Vibhishana, who had joined Shri Ram’s army, caught them and presented them to Shri Ram.

Instead of punishing the two spies, Shri Ram asked them to give his message to Ravana. Shri Ram said, "Go tell your King, Dashanan that Raghav along with his brother, Lakshmana are here and with the help of Sugriva's Vanar Sena, he will kill you and rescue his wife, Sita and take her back."

Shri Ramchandra's Shakti Puja

According to the version of Ramayana prevalent in the Bengal region, Bhagwan Ram performed Shakti Puja in order to win the battle against Ravana.

For the purpose of worshipping Devi Adishakti, 108 blue lotus flowers were collected. At the end of the puja, when Shri Ram was about to offer the 108th blue lotus flower to Devi Shakti, he realised that there were only 107 flowers.

Shriram was very upset and did not want his worship to remain incomplete, as it would have been inauspicious. He thought for a moment and decided to offer one of his eyes to Devi instead of a blue lotus flower, since he was called Kamal-Nayan. Shri Ramchandra did not hesitate even for a moment before taking an arrow in his hand with the intention to take out one of his eyes as an offering to the deity.

As soon as Ramchandra ji took the arrow near his eyes, Devi Adishakti appeared and stopped him. Being pPleased with his devotion, she granted him the boon of victory over Ravana.

Rishi Who Drank the Ocean

Once during Devasur sangram between Indra and Vritrasur; after the death of Vritra many Asurs hid inside the ocean in order to save themselves from Gods.

After the demons were killed by the Gods, they requested Agastya rishi to fill the ocean again; he then urinated the entire water to fill up the oceans.

Birth of River Kaveri

Ilvala and Vatapi

Ilvala and Vatapi were two demons who had the knowledge of Mrita-Sanjeevani. They used this gift to trap and kill rich travelers in order to steal their wealth.

Vatapi will transform himself into food, who Ilvala will feed to unsuspecting travelers. After they had eaten Ilvala will call out his brother who will burst out of the stomachs of their guests.

Rishi Agastya visited Ilvala and Vatapi, who tried to use this same trick on him. The great rishi was aware of this so as soon as Agastya muni had finished eating, he rubbed his belly saying “Vatapi Jeernam”, meaning “Vatapi digest”.

When Ilvala called out his brother rishi Agastya burped, because Vapati was already digested. An enraged Ilvala attacked the great sage who then burnt him to ashes with his power.

Thus, rishi Agastya also managed to acquire necessary wealth to offer a comfortable life to his wife Lopamudra and raise a family.

Parshuram Kund

Bhagwaan Parshuram beheaded his mother Renuka, up on being ordered such by his father Jamdagni rishi. Although when his father granted him a boon, he managed to restore his mother back to life; he was still filled with tremendous guilt.

He tried to wash off the blood from his axe but he could not. He travelled everywhere and washed his axe in the water of many rivers and lakes, but the blood would not wash off.

In the end he reached the banks of Lohit river in modern Arunachal Pradesh, and managed to wash off the blood stains from his axe.

The place where Bhagwaan Parshuram washed his axe became known as Parshuram Kund, where every year during Makar Sankranti pilgrims from all over India and Nepal visit here to take a dip in the holy water.

When Drona heard that Bhagwaan Parshuram was donating all his possessions, he approached him.

Bhagwaan Parshuram told Drona, that he has given away all his worldly possessions already. Only thing left with him was the knowledge of divine weapons, which he taught to Drona.

With this knowledge Drona became a great warrior and he started a school to teach weaponry and warcraft to deserving students.

After leaving Shantanu, Devi Ganga raised Devavrat like a prince he was and took him to Bhagwaan Parshuram to learn warcraft and weaponry.

Bhagwaan Parshuram taught Devavrat everything he knew and granted knowledge of all the divine weapons he possessed. Devavrat as a good student learned everything his teacher taught him and became an expert warrior.

When princess Amba was wronged by Bhishma, she approached Bhagwaan Parshuram to confront Bhishma and convince him to marry her.

A massive battle ensued at the battlefield of Kurukshetra between two greatest warriors for twenty-one days.

In the end Bhishma invoked Praswapstra, a weapon known only to Vasus. Parshuram did not have a counter for that.

Devarshi Narad and Parshuram’s grandfather Richik rishi appeared on the battlefield and stopped the fight between the greatest teacher and his greatest student.

Ranjangaon Mahaganpati

Ranjangaon Mahaganpati is the eighth Ganapati i.e. the eighth Ashtavinayak temple. Maha Ganapati Temple is also known as Tripurari Maha Ganapati. Shiva ji defeated the asura Tripurasura only after worshiping Ganesha. That's why his form enshrined in the temple is equipped with weapons. In this idol, Mahaganpati ji is shown with eight, ten or twelve arms.

According to mythology, at the time of killing Tripurasura, according to the instruction of Naradji, Mahadev worshiped Vinayak in the form of Parabrahma and received the boon of victory from him.

Thereafter, riding on the chariot made by all the gods, Shiva destroyed the three cities of Tripurasura with his Pashupat weapon. Due to the form of Brahma himself, here Ganesha is called Maha Ganapati.

Chintamani Ganpati, Pune

The fifth Ganesha in Ashtavinayak is Chintamani Ganapati. Here Ganesha is popularly known as 'Chintamani', which means "this Ganesha takes away all worries and gives peace to the mind".

According to beliefs, King Abhijit and Queen Gunavati had a son named Ganasur. He harassed the poors and disturbed the penance of the sadhus. Ganasur once went on a hunt with his friends. Kapil Rishi had an ashram in that forest. The sage welcomed Gana and invited him and his friends for a meal. Dev Indra had given Chintamani to Rishi Kapil, from which whatever wish he asked was fulfilled. Using the same gem, Kapil Rishi created all kinds of food items for Ganasur. Seeing such a wonderful gem, Ganasur's longing to get it awakened in his mind. So Ganasur grabbed the gem by force from the hand of the sage.

After that Kapil Rishi worshiped Bhagwan Ganapati. Ganapati was pleased with the devotion of the sage and after killing Ganasur, he took back Chintamani from him. When Bhagwan Ganesha wanted to return Chintamani to Kapil Rishi, in gratitude to him, Kapil Muni presented Chintamani to Ganeshji forever. Even today, the Mani is worn by Ganeshji in a necklace around his neck. According to the legends, Bhagwan Ganesha killed Ganasur under a Kadamba tree, hence the place is also called Kadamba Teerth

Shri Girjatmaj Vinayak, Lenyadri

The sixth Ganesha temple in the Ashtavinayaka is Girjatmaja Ganapati, situated on the Lenyadri mountain. Girjatmaj means Girija i.e. Ganesha, son of Maa Parvati. It is believed that Parvati did penance at the place where Ganesha is seated. The name Girjatmaj was coined as Ganesha is Girja Ka (Parvati's) Atmaja (son) i.e. Girjatmaj. Of the 18 caves on the Lenyadri mountain, the 8th cave houses the Girijatmaj Vinayak Temple. These caves are called Ganesh caves.

This is the only temple where Shri Ganesh is worshiped in the form of Parabrahma. According to the beliefs, Vinayak is the beginning and end of the universe and Goddess Parvati did severe penance for twelve years inside this cave to get him as her son. Satisfied with his penance, Ganapati took birth as his son and infused life inside the idol made by Goddess Parvati from the filth of his body.

Varad Vinayak – Mahad

The Varad Vinayak temple located at Mahad in Kolhapur district is considered to be the fourth of the Ashtavinayaks. Varad Vinayak is the form of Ganesha who fulfills the wishes of devotees and whose fasting according to the rules fulfills all the wishes. Varad Vinayak Chaturthi or Vainayaki Chaturthi fasting is observed at midday on the Chaturthi of Shukla Paksha every month.

According to mythological legends, the prince of Kaundinya kingdom, Rukmanagad once reached the hermitage of sage Vachkanavi to rest while hunting in the forest. Seeing the beauty of Rukmanagad, the sage's wife Mukunda fell in love with him and expressed her desire to have physical relations with the prince. But the virtuous Rukmanagad, considering this to be inappropriate, refused the advances. Indra Dev, who was passing by at that time, saw Mukunda saddened by this. Devraj Indra's feelings towards her aroused and he came disguised as Rukmanagad and formed a relationship with Mukunda. After a few days, Mukunda gave birth to a son named Gritasambad.

After growing up, when Gritsambad came to know that he was an illegitimate child, his heart shrinked with grief and left the ashram cursing his mother. He started wandering in the forest day and night, condemning his fate. When he got tired, Gritsambad started praising Bhagwan Ganesha to calm his mind. Pleased with his devotion, Bhagwan Ganesha appeared to him and gave peace to his tormented heart. Accepting the prayer of Gritsambad, Bhagwan Ganesha established himself in the form of Varad Vinayak at the same place.

Located in the Raigarh district of Maharashtra, Ballaleshwar is considered to be the third among the Ashtavinayaka. The shape of this temple is in the shape of "Shri", with big ponds on both sides.

According to mythology, there lived a Seth couple named Kalyan and Indumati in the village of Pali. Their only sonBallal was a great devotee of Bhagwan Ganesha. Seth was not happy with his devotion, because his son, engrossed in devotion, did not take any special interest in business. Once Kalyan Seth angrily went out to look for Ballal, he was found in the forest worshiping Ganesha. He beat him severely and pushed him and also broke the idol of Ganesha. Seth tied him to a tree in the forest and left him saying that after being hungry and thirsty, his wisdom would come. After Seth's departure, Shri Ganesha, pleased with Ballal's devotion, appeared before him as a Brahmin. Ballal asked him to free him from bondage and asked for a boon.As a boon, Ballal requested him to establish himself in his area. Shri Ganesha fulfilled his wish and installed himself in a stone idol and then the Ballal Vinayak temple was built at that place.

According to another belief, the place of Treta Yuga named Dandakaranya was here and it is here that Adishakti Jagadamba had appeared to Shri Ram. At a distance from there is the place where the war between Ravana and Jatayu took place at the time of Sitaharan.

Siddhatek Siddhivinayak Temple

The Siddhivinayak temple located in Siddhatek is considered to be the second among the Ashtavinayaka. Bhagwan Ganesha is worshiped in his most prominent form with his wives Riddhi and Siddhi. The temple was built under Ahilyabai Holkar, the great queen of the Peshwa Empire.

According to mythological beliefs, when Brahma was engrossed in the task of creating the universe, two demons, Madhu and Kaitabh, born from the ear of Bhagwan Vishnu, stole the Vedas to obstruct this task. Then Brahmaji came to the shelter of Lord Shri Hari. Vishnu Dev fought the battle that lasted for about five thousand years and finally Bhagwan Vishnu killed Madhu-Kaitabha and freed the Vedas from them.

At the time of killing Madhu-Kaitabha, Sri Hari had established Siddhivinayak at this place to pray for the blessing of success and victory from Bhagwan Ganesha.

Morgaon Ganpati Temple

The Morgaon Ganpati temple is located near Pune city and is considered to be the first among the Ashtavinayaka. The idol of Dev Ganesha mounted on a peacock bird is worshipped.

According to the beliefs in the Ganesh Purana, Mithila King Chakrapani and his wife Ugra, worshiped Surya Dev for a child and they got a brilliant son who they named Sindhu.

Sindhu was born with a nectar urn with him, due to which Sindhu's death was impossible as long as that urn remained intact. In order to keep the Kalash always safe, Sindhu swallowed it and hid it in his stomach.

Having attained immortality, Sindhu now became extremely vicious. His tyranny caused outrage among the people. Along with ordinary humans, Sindhu also defeated many gods in the war and took them captive. Finally, to protect Devpuri from Sindhu, the gods approached Bhagwan Ganesha.

It is said that at this place, Bhagwan Ganesha, mounted on a peacock bird, came to the earth and killed Sindhu by breaking the nectar urn kept in his stomach. From that day onwards, the Mayureshwar form of Lord Ganesha mounted on a peacock is worshiped here.

The Gajanan disguise performed on the day of Snana Purnima is an example of Bhagwan Jagannath's love for his devotees. Many years ago, there was a Ganesh devotee named Ganapati Bhatt in the state of Maharashtra. This devotee used to deny the existence of any other deity as for him, Shri Ganesh was the embodiment of Param Brahma. Once a friend of his who had returned from Puri narrated the glory of Bhagwan Jagannath to him and advised him to go to Puri once. But Ganapati was adamant and ridiculed his friend. As the days passed, he found more and more people who would describe this unique Jagannatha form of Sri Hari Vishnu before him and Ganapati would deny it all.

Finally one day fed up, Ganpati said that he is ready to go to Puri but he has one condition. If Bhagwan Jagannath is Param Brahma, then he will have to give darshan to him in the form of Bhagwan Ganesh. After a long journey, Ganpati Bhatt reached the temple on the day Devasnana Purnima. He was bewildered at what he saw there. After bathing, Ganesh ji stood in place of Bhagwan Jagannath. Ganapati Bhatta had now realized that Bhagwan Jagannath was Param Brahma and became his supreme devotee. That is why on the day of Snan Purnima, after bathing, God is disguised as Gajanan.

This is probably the most mysterious method performed in any Hindu temple in the world. The last rites of wooden idols of Bhagwan Jagannath, Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra are performed every twelve to nineteen years. After this, the soul of the deities resides in the newly made idols. This way the body or Brahma Padard of Shri Krishna, which has been residing for hundreds of years inside the idol of Bhagwan Jagannath, is installed from the old to the new idols. This process is called Brahma-Parivartan, which is done in a very secretive manner in the night.

The new idols of God cannot be made from any common wood. For this, Daitapati, the servant of the Bhagwan, takes refuge of Maa Mangala. Devi shows Daitapati in the dream the place of wood that resembles Bhagwan. After this, those trees are found at the places directed by the goddess. The bark of tree used for Bhagwan Jagannath’s idol have the structure similar to that of conch, chakra, mace and padma and the tree with which the idol of Dev Balabhadra is to be made have the shape of plow, pestle and Sheshnag etc.

Bhagwan Jagannath, known for his human nature, falls ill like any ordinary human being and is also treated. Every year on Jyeshtha Purnima, Bhagwan Jagannath, Bhagwan Balabhadra, Goddess Subhadra and Sudarshan ji are bathed with water of one hundred and eight pots and then adorned in the guise of Gajanan. This festival is called Devasnana Purnima and it is believed that after bathing with so much water, all the four Gods get fever. They are then treated by royal doctors for the next fifteen days. For those fifteen days, the deities are served alone in a secret room and the darshan of all gods are closed for the common devotees. This time is called Ansar.

After ayurvedic treatment, when all the four Bhagwan come out after recovering, then like a king, the court of the God is held, where the eager devotees are able to see them. This day is called Navayovan Darshan. The world famous Rath Yatra of God is organized only two days after Navayovan.

Temple’s massie kitchen

Out of the four Dhams, the place where Lord Vishnu eats is the temple of Puri Jagannath. That is why food is of utmost importance in this temple, that is why it is not called Prasad but Mahaprasad. The kitchen of this temple was once considered to be the world's largest kitchen, this entire temple kitchen still serves food daily to over one lakh devotees.

Fifty-six favorite dishes of Bhagwan Vishnu are cooked here in earthen pots which are placed one on top of the other. The most surprising thing is that the food of the upper vessel is prepared first and then in vessels beneath it.

It is said that such a miracle happens only because Mahalakshmi herself cooks this food with her own hands for her beloved Shri Hari. No matter how many devotees come during the day, the food never falls short. In every Odia family, when the time of death of a member is near, the dying is fed this Mahaprasad as the last morsel, which is called Nirmalya.

Incredible temple architecture

There are many incredible stories associated with the Sri Jagannath Temple of Puri. It is believed that the Patit Pavan flag of the temple always flutters in the opposite direction of the wind. The shadow of the main dome of the temple is not visible anywhere at any time of the day. Being situated on the sea shore, it is very common to hear the sound of the sea only when devotees and visitors are outside the temple. The sound of the sea is not audible as one steps inside the main entrance of the temple and moves inside. Moreover, while the temples are usually inhabited by birds like pigeons etc. the temple of Puri Jagannath is the only temple where no bird ever passes over the temple.

Apart from all this, the giant Sudarshan Chakra, also known as Neelchakra, mounted on top of the temple, can be seen only in front of it when viewed from anywhere in Puri. Meaning it is impossible to see the Neelchakra from the side or its edge.

Kakbhushundi

Bhushundi was born in Ayodhya and was a staunch devotee of Shri Ram. He was so devoted to Bhagwaan Ram that he did not want to know about anything else in life.

He went to study under Lomash rishi and kept interrupting him because he only wanted to talk about Shri Ram. Lomash rishi tried to avoid his interruption for some time but in the end, he lost his cool. Out of anger he said,” you are too rigid and refuse to listen to all the knowledge and wisdom I have to offer. You keep behaving like a crow. I curse you to become a crow at once.”

Thus, Bhushundi became Kakbhushundi. When lord came to know about the curse, he confronted Lomash rishi and asked him to help Kakbhushundi attain true devotion.

Kakbhushundi was given the boon to be alive forever and witness Shri Ram’s life in every kalpa. He can travel through time and space at will to witness leela of his Prabhu.

Kakbhushundi narrated Shri Ram katha to lord Garuda, when he got doubts about His divinity, much before Valmiki wrote him Ramayana.

Story of Jayanta: Indra’s Son

Jayanta is son of Devraj Indra. Once he had doubts over the divine nature of Shri Ram and in order to test Him, he disguised himself in the form of a crow and attacked Sita mata, when they were living in Chitrakuta during their exile.

When Shri Ram saw Sitaji’s blood, he got enraged, picked a blade of grass and unleashed Brahmastra out of it on Jayant disguised as a crow.

Jayant ran towards all the Gods, including his father requesting them to rescue Him from the Brahmastra but none of them could do anything about it.

In the end he went to Shri Ram and pleaded for forgiveness. Shri Ram said that he cannot take back the Brahmastra and directed it towards his right eye, leaving him blind in one eye.

Story of Ambarisha

Ambarisha was the son of King Mandhata and brother of Muchukund. He was an ancestor of Shri Ram.

He was a great devotee of Bhagwaan Vishnu and Narayan had given him his Sudarshan Chakra for his devotion, which he worshipped with great devotion.

Ambarisha started the Ekadashi (11th day of fortnight) fast, which is observed for Bhagwaan Vishnu and the fast is broken at the start of Dvadashi (12th day of fortnight).

Once sage Durvasa was visiting. It was time for Ambarisha to break his fast and rishi Durvasha had gone to bathe in river Yamuna and was taking time. So Ambarisha broke his fast by drinking some water.

When rishi Durvasa came back, he took Ambarisha breaking his fast before him as an insult and in his rage created a demon to kill Ambarisha.

Because Ambarish was a great devotee of Bhagwaan Vishnu, Sudarshan Chakra intervened and killed the demon. Sudarshan chakra came after rishi Durvasa after killing the demon.

Durvasa rishi went to Brahmadev and Shivaji for protection and both refused to intervene. So, he went to Vishnuji and pleaded for his safety from Sudashran, which was chasing him.

Vishnu bhagwaan asked Durvasha rishi to seek pardon from Ambarisha. Durvasa did as suggested and Ambarisha pardoned him, thus saving his life.

Ranchhod

Jarasandh attacked Shri Krishna seventeen times but was unable to defeat him, so he sought help from Kalayavan. Kalayavan had a boon from Bhagwaan Shankar that he cannot be defeated in battle.

Kalayavan came for Jarasandh’s aid and attacked Shri Krishna.

Shri Krishna looked at Kalayavan and his massive army of three million soldiers and ran away.

Kalayavan chased Shri Krishna and followed him inside the cave where Muchukund was sleeping his undisturbed sleep since ages.

In the dark of the cave Kalayavan thought of sleeping Muchukund as Shri Krishna hiding and kicked him hard thus breaking his sleep.

Since Kalayavan had woken up Muchukund from his sleep, as per Indra’s boon to Muchukund, Kalayavan was burnt to ashes.

It is because of this leela, Shri Krishna got the name of Ranchhod.

Story of Muchukund

Muchukund was the son of King Mandhata of Ikshvaku dynasty, an ancestor of Shri Ram.

Once, in battle, Asuras defeated Devtas so Indra came to Muchukund to seek his help. Indra requested Muchukunda to fight for Devtas as their commander. Muchukunda accepted Indra’s request and fought a very long battle against Asuras alongside Devtas.

In the end Indra asked Muchukund what he wanted in return of his help. Muchukund was sleep deprived and very tired because of the hard-fought battle so he says that he wants undisturbed sleep.

Indra grants him his wish and says whoever wakes him from his sleep will burn to ashes.

Muchukund comes back to earth, finds a secluded cave and goes to sleep inside it.

Nahush: The Great Fall

After being appointed Indra, king Nahush became arrogant and started treating everyone with disrespect. He even wanted to marry Indrani, Shachi.

Shachi had a plan in mind. She pretended to accept his proposal however asked him to arrive at the wedding ceremony on a palanquin carried by the greatest sages of our time.

Nahush agreed to this condition. On the way to wedding ceremony, he started getting restless and kept asking the rishis to move faster, telling them, “sarp, sarp.”

This finally enraged rishi Agastya, who cursed Nahush to become and giant snake and fall from heaven. Thus, saving Shachi from Nahush’s bad design making Indra the king of Gods again.

Nahush: Birth and Rise

Nahush was grandson of Pururava and born after his father King Ayu performed great penance to Bhagwaan Dattatreya. He was kidnapped by demon Hunda as a toddler because of a prophecy that he will kill Hunda and marry Ashokasundari, the daughter of Bhagwaan Shankar and Mata Parvati, whom Hunda had kidnapped and wanted to marry.

He was rescued by Hunda’s housemaid and left in care of guru Vashishtha. The great rishi raised the boy and made him expert in dharma, vedas and weaponry.

When the boy grew older, he slayed Hunda and married Ashokasundari, fulfilling the prophecy.

Nahush conquered the earth and performed Rajsuya yajna to establish his claim as ruler of entire earth. Due to his greatness, when Indra fled heaven, leaving the throne empty all the rishis and Gods decided to make Nahush, king of Gods bestowing the title on Indra on him.

Daughter of Shiv-Parvati

Once Bhagwaan Shankar and Mata Parvati were roaming in the gardens of mount Meru and they stopped near the wish fulfilling tree Kalpavriksha.

Parvati ji expressed the desire to have a daughter who can give her company and the tree granted her wish by giving her a daughter, who is known by the name Ashoksundari, because she was a beautiful girl (sundari) born to relieve Mata Parvati of her sorrow cause by loneliness (Ashoka).

She later married Pururava’s grandson Chandravanshi king Nahush and was mother of Yati and Yayati.

Story of Ashokasundari is narrated in detail in Padma Puran. She is also known as Bala Tripura Sundari.

Birth of Urvashi

Ila: The First Born of Vaivaswat Manu

When Vaivaswat Manu did not have any children after many years of marriage, he decided to consult Vashishth muni. Manu along with his wife Shraddha conducted a yajna to please twin Gods Mitra-Varun.

At the end of the yajna they had a daughter, whom they named Ila, since Shraddha secretly wished for a daughter. However, Manu wanted a son and he requested Vashishth rishi to do something about it.

Vashishth muni turned Ila into a man upon insistence from her father and he was called Sudyumna.

The fate had other plans though. One day Sudyumna was hunting near Sumeru mountain and he entered a grove following a deer.

That grove was private abode of Mata Parvati and in order to protect her privacy Bhagwaan Shiv had enchanted that grove in a manner that anyone entering it would become a woman.

One of the sons of Vaivaswat Manu, Ikshvaku was the founder of The Great Solar Dynasty, also referred as Ikshvaku dynasty.

Many great kings like Ambarisha, Sagar, Bhagirath, Raghu, Dileep, Dashrath and Shriram were born in this dynasty.

Shiva’s Wrath

When Bhagwaan Shankar got to know about the events at Daksha yajna, he got extremely angry. In his extreme anger, he created Veerbhadra and Bhadrakali and ordered them to destroy Daksha yajna.

No God or Rishi could do anything to stop Veerbhadra and Bhadrakali and they started running for shelter to save themselves. Eventually Veerbhadra cut the head of Daksha Prajapati.

All the Gods and Goddesses started praying to Bhagwaan Shankar to stop Veerbhadra and Bhadrakali from causing further destruction. When His anger subsided Shivaji stopped his creations and restored all the Gods and Rishis to their farmer self.

Brahmadev requested Shivaji to restore Daksha as well and allow the yagya to complete. Shivaji revived Daksha Prajapati by replacing his decapitated head with the head of a ram (male goat). Daksha Prajapati completed the yagya by offering arghya to Bhagwaan Shankar.

Sati’s Sacrifice

Daksh Prajapati organized a massive yajna and invited all the Gods and rishis except his daughter, Sati, and son-in-law Bhagwaan Shankar.

When Sati found out about her father’s yajna, she wanted to go. Shivji advised her not to go since they were not invited, however Sati did not heed his advice.

Daksh insulted Sati for joining the yajna without an invitation. He also used unsavoury language for his son-in-law, Bhagwaan Shankar. Devi Sati could not tolerate this insult of her husband by her very own father and decided to end her life by jumping into the fire of the yajna.

The 27 daughters of Daksh Prajapati were married to Chandra. Chandra was more devoted towards Rohini and ignored his other 26 wives.

Daughters of Daksha

After all his sons were convinced by Narad muni to follow the path of devotion and not get into the task of procreation, Daksh produced multiple daughters through his wives Prashuti and Panchajani.

27 daughters of Daksh were married to Chandra, who all became 27 nakshatra. 13 daughters were married to Kashyap rishi, who became responsible for giving birth to many life forms. 10 daughters were married to Dharma.

Brigu rishi’s wife Khyati, Marichi rishi’s wife Sambhuti, Angira rishi’s wife Smriti, Pulastya rishi’s wife Priti, Pulah rishi’s wife Kshama, Kratu rishi’s wife Sannati, Atri rishi’s wife Anusuya and Vashishth rishi’s wife Urjja were all daughters of Daksh Prajapati.

His other daughters Swaha and Rati were married to Agnidev and Kamdev respectively.

His daughter Sati married Bhagwaan Shankar against his wishes.

Daksh Prajapati as ordered by Brahmadev to accelerate the creation of life in the universe created by Him, ordered his many sons to go on and create more life. However, Naradji met those sons of Daksha and convinced them to follow the path of asceticism.

This interference from Narad muni angered Daksha, however he calmed his anger and produced more sons, and asked them to spread life in the world. Naradji intervened again and managed to sway even these sons of Daksha on the path of devotion.

This time Daksha Prajapati could not control his anger and cursed Naradmuni that he will never find a resting place for himself and will keep roaming around in the three worlds.

When the four Kumars refused to follow the instructions of Brahmadev, he got very angry. When he tried to suppress that anger, his head created a red and blue baby, who was personification of anger itself.

Brahmaji told the kid that the world will know him as Rudra and that he has created heart, senses, soul, sky, air, fire, water, earth, sun and moon for him to live. Dhee, Vritti, Ushna, Uma, Niyut, Sarpi, Ila, Ambika, Iravati, Sudha and Deeksha, these eleven Rudranis will be your wives, said Brahma to Rudra. Now you get on with the task of procreation.

Following the instructions of Brahmadev, Rudra started procreating, but his progenies were created from his own image and were always full of anger. Due to their anger they started destroying the world. Looking at this Brahmadev stopped Rudra and instructed him to perform penance to control his anger first.

Dadhichi’s Sacrifice

Rishi Atharvan was one of Brahma’s mind-born sons. He was married to Chitti, the daughter of Kardam rishi.

Their son was Maharshi Dadhichi, who was a great devotee of Bhagwaan Shankar. He was the first to leave the Daksha yajna, when he found out that Bhagwaan Shankar was not invited.

When Vritra was tormenting devlok, Indra and the other Gods approached Bhagwaan Vishnu for guidance. Vishnu Bhagwaan advised Indra that a weapon made out of the bones of Maharshi Dadhichi was the only way to kill Vritra.

Indra went to the great rishi and requested his help in defeating Vritra. Maharshi Dadhichi willingly sacrificed himself to donate his bones.

Vishwakarma created Vajra using these bones, which was then used by Indra to kill Vritrasur.

Bhrigu’s Kick

Once many great sages were conducting an important yagya at Mandarachal mountain. The sages were arguing about which of the three Gods should be the presiding deity of that yagya. When they could not arrive at a conclusion, they all gave the task to sage Bhrigu to test the three Gods and decide who the presiding deity of the yajna should be.

In order to test the three Gods, Bhrigu rishi first went to Kailash, the abode of Bhagwaan Shankar. Shivji was spending time with His wife Sati at that moment - so Nandi and the other guards did not allow him to meet Shivji. Bhrigu rishi got angry and cursed Shivji to be worshiped in phallic form.

After that, Brighu rishi went to Brahm-lok. Brahmadev was so busy in conversation with other Gods that he forgot to greet the great sage properly or even offer him a place to sit. Bhrigu rishi got extremely angry and cursed Brahmadev that he will not be worshipped at all.

Thus, already filled with anger, the great sage went to Vaikunthlok to meet Bhagwaan Vishnu. Vishnuji was sleeping and did not see Bhrigu rishi when he arrived. Bhrigu rishi in a fit of rage kicked Narayan on his chest. The kick woke Shri Hari but instead of getting angry, Vishnuji started massaging the great sage’s foot and asked him if his foot was hurt because of his strong chest. This behaviour melted all the anger of Bhrigu rishi and he decided to select Vishnu ji as the presiding deity of the great yagya and that he be widely worshipped for his kind behaviour.

Sage, who decided to shoot the sun.

One day Jamdagni rishi got miffed at the heat created by the Sun and wanted to punish Him. When the Sun found out what Jamadagni had in mind He came in disguise to see him.

He asked Jamadagni, how he intended on punishing the Sun, since He was always moving.

Jamadagni rishi replied, "there is a moment at noon, when I can see the Sun pausing for a moment, that is when I will shoot my arrows at Him."

The Sun revealed himself and asked for forgiveness for causing so much heat, however he claimed that it was essential for the lives on earth.

Instead, he suggested a solution and gave jamdagni rishi a pair of sandals and an umbrella. The sandals to protect his feet and the umbrella to protect his head.

The sage who created Parallel Universe

Story of Vindhyachal Parwat

Once Vindhyachal mountain told the Sun that he always circles around Sumeru, and asked him if maybe he could sometime circle around him as well. The Sun said it was not possible to do so.

This angered Vindhy and he started growing in size. He grew so large that he started blocking the Sun. Livestock on the earth started suffering due to lack of sunlight.

All the Gods approached the great sage Agastya to help them stop Vindhya’s growth and allow sunlight to reach the earth.

Agastya rishi went to Vindhyachal and requested him to give way for him to travel south. Vindhya bowed and gave way to the great sage. Rishi Agastya asked him to wait for him till he came back.

The great sage stayed in the south and never returned thus keeping Vindhyachal bowed forever in the wait for his return.

Boon of kurukshetra Bhumi

Kurukshetra is named after king Kuru, after which the dynasty was called Kuru Vansh. He was the son of King Samvaran and Tapti. Tapti was daughter of Suryadev. Samvaran had to perform great penance to please Suryadev and pass his test before Suryadev allowed the marriage.

Kuru ploughed the field of Kurukshetra for many years and won a boon from Indradev that whoever dies in that field either due to hunger or in battle will go to heaven.

Why Ganga killed her own sons ?

Once all 8 Vasus were roaming in a jungle along with their wives. One of the Vasu Prabhas's wife saw divine cow Nandini of sage Vashishth and expressed the desire to possess the divine cow. Prabhas along with all other Vasus stole the cow.

When sage Vashishth found out about this he cursed all the Vasus to be born as humans. When all the Vasus repented their action sage Vashisth suggested a way out to seven Vasus except Prabhas. He allowed them to get rid of their human birth as soon as they take birth but since Prabhas was the mastermind of the entire thing, he will have to suffer for long time.

After this Vasus went to Goddess Ganga to seek her help in fulfilling sage Vashishth's curse by becoming their mother and relieving them from human life as soon as they take birth. Goddess Ganga agrees.

She meets king Shantanu as a beautiful woman and marries him with a condition that Shantanu will never stop her no matter what she does. She gives birth to seven babies and releases them in the river just after birth thus relieving them from their human form. However when the 8th baby is born, Shantanu stops Ganga from throwing the baby in the river.

This baby is Devavrat, who grows up to become Bhishma Pitamah.

Survivors of Khandav Fire

How Arjuna got his Gandeev?

When Shri Krishna and Arjuna were scouting for land to set-up their separate kingdom of Indraprastha, they were approached by Agnidev. Agnidev was suffering because of being constantly fed Ghee during King Swetaki’s twelve-year long yajna conducted under supervision of rishi Durvasa.

Agnidev was told by Brahmadev that only treatment of his suffering is when he consumes the entire Khandavavan along with all its inhabitants. Agindev tried that many times but every time he tried to burn Khandavavan, Indra started the rain because Indra’s friend Takshak also lived in the same forest.

Agnidev asked for help from Shri Krishna and Arjuna. The land that gets cleared from Khandava dahan will be suitable for setting up Indraprashtha.

Arjuna asked Agnidev, if he can help him with suitable weapons, they would not mind helping him.

Agnidev gave Arjuna a divine golden chariot with Shri Hanuman’s flag pulled by four divine horses. He borrowed Gandiva along with two quivers with an inexhaustible number of arrows from Varun dev and gave it to Arjuna.

Thus, Arjuna came in possession of Gandiva, which he returned to Varun dev before him mahaprayana.

Tilottama

In Hiranyakashipu’s lineage were two demon brothers named Sund and Upsund. They were like reflections of each other and were inseparable.

Both brothers performed severe penance to get a boon of immortality from Brahmadev, however when Brahmadev refused to award immortality they asked for a boon that they should be killed by each other only, knowing they will never turn on each other.

Now to get rid of these two all the gods approached Brahmadev, who requested Bhagwaan Vishwakarma to create the most beautiful woman in the world.

Vishwakarma thus instructed by Brahmadev created Tilottama and Brahmadev instructed her to create feud between two brothers.

When Sund and Upsund saw Tilottama, they started fighting for her and killed each other in the process.

Narad muni narrated this story to Pandav brothers after their marriage with Draupadi so that they never fight among themselves for her.

Revenge of Shurpanakha from Raavan

Shurpanakha was the youngest child of rishi Vishrava from his second wife Kaikeshi. She was the sister of Raavan. She was very beautiful and was called Minakshi (one who has eyes like fish).

She fell in love with a Danava prince of the Kalakeya clan named Vidyutjihva/Dushtabudhi and married him against the wishes of her brother Raavan.

Once after conquering the underworld Raavan was visiting his sister’s place and got into an argument with Vidyutjihva and killed him. Nobody had the power to confront Raavan.

Minakshi was distraught but she also couldn’t do anything. She became Shurpanakha and started roaming in the woods with her relatives Khar and Dushan but she could never forgive her brother for making her a widow and killing the person she loved.

Some narratives suggest that Shurpanakha deliberately instigated Raavan to kidnap mata Sita because she was convinced that only Shri Ram was capable of killing Raavan and take revenge from her brother for making her a widow.

Jatayu- Sampati brotherhood

Charioteer of Suryadev had two sons Sampati and Jatayu. Both brothers once decided to fly to the sun. Jatayu flew too high and when he reached closer to the sun, his wings started burning. In order to save his brother Sampati shielded his brother burning his wings in the process.

They both fell from the sky. Jatayu could not fly for days, while Sampati completely lost the ability to fly.

When vanar sena was looking for mata Sita, they bumped into Sampati, living in a cave on the way to Lanka. When Sampati found out about Jatayu’s death at the hands of Ravan, he decided to help Shri Ram find mata Sita by pointing them towards Lanka.

Makaradhwaj, The son of Hanuman ji

Everyone knows Hanuman ji was celibate for all his life, however there is a mention of his son in various regional retellings of Ramayan.

When Hanuman ji was returning from Lanka after putting it on fire, he took a dip in the ocean. A drop of his sweat was swallowed by a giant fish (sea creature).

This fish was captured by Ahi Raavan, the king of Pataal-lok. When the fish was cut open mighty hero Makaradhwaj appeared.

Ahi Raavan, impressed by his strength, took him under his wings and gave him the task of guarding the gates of his palace in Pataal-lok.

When Shri Ram and Lakshman were kidnapped by Ahi Raavan and taken to Pataal-lok, Hanuman ji went to rescue them and was confronted by Makaradhwaj.

Hanuman ji was confused to know that he was his son. However, Makaradhwaj was loyal to Ahi Raavan, so he fought against his father and was eventually defeated.

After Ahi Raavan was killed by Hanumaan ji, he made Makaradhwaj king of Pataal-lok, with the blessings of Shri Ram.

Jethwa clan of Gujrat who ruled Kathiawar and Porbandar regions are believed to be descendants of Makaradhwaj and worship Hanuman ji as their Ishta-devta. Their Royal flag had image of Hanuman ji on it. Temples of Makaradhwaj can be found in Gujrat, MP, Rajasthan and Maharashtra.

Rishi Ashtawakra

Story of Ashtavakra is narrated in great epics Ramayan and Mahabharat.
Astavakra is the son of Rishi Kahoda and Sujatha Daughter of Rishi Aruni. He was born with physical deformities and hence got the name Ashtavakra. When he was very young his father went to Raja Janak’s place to participate in a debate against renowned scholar Vandin/Vanin, son of water God Varun. His father lost the debate and was immersed in water as condition of the debate.

When Ashtvakra was ten years old, his mother told him about his father’s fate and the kid went to meet Raja Janak. Janak first tested the boy and found him very knowledgeable. He then went on with the debate against Vandin and won the argument. After Ashtavakra won the debate, his father and other drowned scholars were released by Varun dev.

He is credited with writing of Ashtavakra Gita, which mostly talks about nature of God and metaphysical nature of existence.

There is an interesting story behind Ashtvakra’s physical deformities.

When he was inside his mother’s womb, his father was teaching him verses from Vedas and boy would correct him from inside the womb. This irked his father a lot and once out of irritation he cursed the boy to be born with deformities.

After Ashtavakra rescues his father, his father is very impressed with his young son and his knowledge and accepts his mistake in cursing him. On their way back from Janak palace, he asks Ashtvakra to take a dip in a divine lake. After taking the dip in the lake, he is cured of his deformities and becomes normal again.

Divine Architect of Ram Setu

Nal was son of Vishwakarma, the divine architect and like his father he was himself a great engineer and builder.

When Varun dev did not give way to Shri Ram to cross the sea, Shri Ram got enraged and decided to dry to ocean, Varun dev suggested Shri Ram to ask Nal to build a bridge.

Nala undertook the great task of building the bridge across the sea that can be used to cross the ocean by entire vaanar sena.

In some versions Nal and Nila were twin brothers, who as kids were very mischievous. They would throw things belonging to sages living in their jungle into water and then tease them.

Once one of the sages got enraged and cursed them that whatever they touch will not sink in the water but it will float. It was this curse that acted as a boon while building the Ram Setu.

Nila is believed to be the son of Agnidev.

Friendship of Hanuman ji & Sugriva

Why did Vali want to kill Sugreev?

When Mayavi got to know about his younger brother’s death at the hands of Vali, he decided to attack Vali to avenge his brother’s death.

When Mayavi realised Vali’s strength, he ran away and hid inside a cave. Vali went after him, instructing his younger brother Sugreev to wait for him outside.

After many days when Sugreev saw a stream of blood coming out from the cave, he assumed that Mayavi had somehow managed to kill Vali. He closed the opening of the cave with a giant rock and became king of Kishkindha.

When a victorious Vali came out of the cave and found out that Sugreev had become king of Kishkindha, he got really angry and ran towards Sugreev with the intent to kill him.

Sugreev ran for his life and started living in Rishyamook mountain, when Vali could not set foot because of the curse from Matang rishi.

During the duel with Dundubhi, when Vali was throwing Dundubhi around his blood drops fell on Matang rishi performing Yajna in Rishyamook mountain. When he saw the blood and, in his anger, he cursed that whoever has caused this, his head will explode, if he comes near this mountain. That is why Sugreev was safe from Vali living in that mountain.

Dundubhi- A giant bull demon

Dundubhi was like a giant bull and had the power of a thousand elephants. Once he went to Himavan mountain and challenged him for a duel. Himavan told him to go and challenge Vali in Kishkindha.

Dundubhi went to Kishkindha and challenged Vali for a duel. Vali obliged and the duel went on for days. In the end Vali was victorious and he killed Dundubhi and threw his carcass many miles away.

Brahmaji built a divine lake for himself and gave the task of guarding it to Riksharaj. Rikshraj decided to take a bath in that lake. When he came out of the lake, he had turned into a beautiful woman.

Around the same time, Indradev was passing through and saw the most beautiful woman near the lake and got infatuated by her beauty. The son he had with Riksharaj in the form of a woman became Bali, the king of Kishkindha.

When Suryadev saw Riksharaj in woman form, he also could not control himself and the son Riksharaj got from Suryadev was called Sugreev, who later helped Bhagavan Ram in His quest for Sita ji.

In another version of this there is mention that it was Suryadev’s charioteer Arun’s female form Aruni, who was mother of Bali and Sugreev.
