Ep: 075 - Exploring Military Accountability and Global Politics with James Hutton

Join this week's episode where I sit down with insightful James Hutton, former assistant secretary for the Department of Veterans Affairs, retired colonel, and co-founder of Cutting Edge Comms. We explore the ramifications of accountability within the military ranks, reflecting on James' own military background and the broader implications such as the unexpected leave of Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, who James knows personally from his career. Amidst our conversations, we tackle the heavy impact of recent policy changes and the ongoing debates concerning diversity and inclusion initiatives in military readiness. James provides a candid critique of decision-making at the highest levels. From personal anecdotes to global strategy, James familiarizes us with his opinion of how international events shape domestic politics. We cast a critical eye over the intricacies of immigration, the daunting challenges of border security, and the real dangers of gangs like MS-13. We address the hot-button issues, from China to Joe Biden's presidential campaign and the Democrat’s approach to national defense and international relations, including sobering insights into the Houthi movement and the Middle East conflict. James brings experience from the political arena as well, sharing his efforts in aiding individuals to run for Congress, adding to the rich tapestry of the episode's discourse.

Ep: 074 - U.S. Presidential Candidate David Stuckenberg

This week on Carry On Politics we sat down with Presidential Candidate David Stuckenberg. You don’t want to miss this one!
David Stuckenberg's story is a powerful testament to the strength of the human spirit and the quintessential American dream. With humble beginnings on a ranch in rural Oklahoma and Missouri, David was raised by his mother in an economically strained household.
His early years were marked by necessity over tradition, as he left school at the tender age of eight and started contributing to the workforce by eleven. For nearly a decade, he labored diligently, gaining a diverse and real-world education on the job.
At twenty, recognizing the value of formal education, David earned his GED. This pivotal moment led him to enlist in the Air Force at twenty-one, starting a journey that would be his first introduction to structured learning. Despite the late start, his commitment and work ethic remained his guiding force.
David's experiences gave him insight into the lives of Americans across different socioeconomic strata—everyone but the ultra-wealthy. This unique perspective has fostered a deep connection with the American people and their diverse stories, shaping his potential presidency.

Ep: 069 - From Education to Veteran Care: Key Priorities Addressed with Alex Stovall

Congressional Candidate Stovall, an Army Reservist, is running for Arizona’s 5th District. Stovall opens up about his military journey, breaking barriers, and shares his vision for the future. Alex would be the youngest Black Republican elected to Congress at age 29.
As this episode unfolds, listeners can reflect upon his meaningful insights as he deploys compelling arguments, urging us to rethink our sociopolitical stands and challenge our preconceived notions about conservatism. Emerging as the promising candidate, his ideology focuses on unity, shared values, and the power of education, providing fertile ground for further discussion.
**Veteran Care** Recognizing the sacrifices veterans make, Stovall calls for a better understanding and commitment toward their welfare. As there are approximately 50,000 veterans in his district, he feels a personal obligation to care for them. He insists on the vital need to raise awareness and utilization of existing resources for veterans.
**Insights on Conservatism** Conservative beliefs, argues Stovall, are often misunderstood. These values are relatable to hard-working individuals. Conversely, experiencing hardship and scarcity can drive someone towards more progressive beliefs. Consequently, bridging this ideological gap is essential for national unity.
**Boosting Hispanic Outreach** The Republican Party is often criticized for neglecting Hispanic voters. However, our guest - military chaplain candidate and GOP congressman candidate - believes that a strong relationship can be established between the party and the Hispanic community. He sees potential alignment in terms of shared values and encourages a chance for conservative options for this significant sector of voters.
**Education and Empowerment** Stovall perceives education as the bedrock of development. By implementing knowledge and promoting critical thinking, he believes education can empower the populace. He emphasizes teaching conservative values and the idea of America as a land of opportunity.
**The Power of Education** A strong advocate of school choice, Stovall credits his personal and professional development to the switching from public to private school. He believes that quality teacher investment can fundamentally transform students' lives.
**Cartel Threats and Border Security** Stovall contends the need for enhanced border security, citing threats posed by the cartel. Disputing claims made by AOC about the composition of migrants, he maintains that unchecked adult males crossing the border pose a significant risk to communities. His analysis of the situation keeps the security and well-being of border residents a priority while also calling for a humane approach towards immigrants.

Ep: 062 - Richard A. Stone M.D.

Richard A. Stone M.D. is a retired U.S. Army Maj. General and former Deputy Surgeon General of the United States Army, who then was called back to federal service as the Executive in Charge and Acting Under Secretary of the Veterans Health Administration, serving for three years as the leader of America’s largest health care system through the entire pandemic. He is also the author of Save Every Life You Can: A Reflection on Leadership and Saving Lives during the COVID-19 Pandemic.
We got a chance to sit down with him for an interview about his book and the leadership it took to run the VHA during COVID.
Book overview “Save Every Life You Can.” - A reflection on leadership and saving lives during the COVID-19 pandemic. Richard A. Stone MD is the former Deputy Surgeon General of the United States Army. He returned to government service to lead the Veterans Health Administration at the Department of Veterans Affairs in 2018. Brought on as a proven changemaker and experienced leader in an inflection point for the agency. He had no idea his tenure would be defined by the public health challenge of our lifetime. This memoir describes the extraordinary challenges the agency faced and the personal stories of his team as they worked against the clock in a pandemic unique in more than 100 years. It describes the principles of leadership that informed and guided Dr. Stone, and his thoughts on what we learned as a nation about health care delivery as we prepare for the next once-in-a-hundred-year crisis.

We are joined by Jacob Turner who is a former Marine, business owner and Libertarian candidate for the 8th Congressional District in Missouri for 2022.

Why is Jacob Turner running as a Libertarian?

“I am a former Republican. I grew up Republican in a Republican family. I watched two years in the first Trump-term where the Republican Party had full control and they did nothing to earn back our liberties & freedoms that had been stripped away over time. Republicans became more of a roadblock to President Trump than anything else.

I watched the party really hold him back and I feel like he really wanted to do a lot. I am very supportive of Mr. Trump and was sad to see that. Which is why I made my choice to switch over to the Libertarian Party.”

Join Jacob and I as we discuss his congressional race, underlying veteran issues and why a Libertarian vote in his district is very likely.

Carry On Podcast, Ep: 16 – Rolling to Remember with Joseph Chenelly

Rolling to Remember sponsored by AMVETS is a motorcycle ride that occurs annually in Washington, DC over Memorial Day Weekend. This year will be the second annual Rolling to Remember Ride following a three decade-long ride hosted by Rolling Thunder. The ride calls for further efforts to recover American POW/MIA’s as well as awareness for veteran suicide. It is estimated an upward of 50,000 motorcyclists will be in DC for this event next weekend.

However, this year the event has been shadowed in controversy, when just weeks prior to the event, the Department of Defense turned down AMVETS request to use the Pentagon Parking Lot as an event staging space. AMVETS has worked very hard in the past few weeks to circumvent this set-back and drive-on with the mission, to fully execute the Rolling to Remember Ride.

Joseph Chenelly, Executive Director for AMVETS, National Headquarters joins Carry On Podcast to provide our listeners with the most up-to-date logistical details and an inside look into who in Washington, DC was willing to go the extra mile to ensure this patriotic ride still occurred.

Joseph is a Marine combat veteran who served in both Iraq and Afghanistan. He is an advocate for military veterans and has served as a spokesman for larger organizations including AMVETS, Disabled American Veterans and the US Marine Corp. He is also the first veteran of combat operations in both Afghanistan and Iraq to lead one of the nation’s four largest veterans service organizations.

He is also the first veteran of combat operations in both Afghanistan and Iraq to lead one of the nation’s four largest veterans service organizations.</itunes:summary>

OUT OF THE FIGHT, Producer/Director Steve Moon takes us on the journey of US Sergeant Jason Pate, a fictional character, who after three tours in Afghanistan returns home to combat PTSD and suicidal thoughts while trying to readjust to family life.

Steve worked with over 200 military families to help tell this story accurately and thoughtfully, a narrative that is all too familiar for many veterans and their families. What is most on point about this film is the lack of a Hollywood ending (Steve refused) which makes it all the more real and accurate. Steve started writing, producing and directing independent films in 2000.

This is a two-part series and this is part II. Adam DeRito was a member of the class of 2010 at the United States Air Force Academy, where he inadvertently worked as an undercover informant for the Air Force Office of Special Investigations during his time as a cadet. Adam informed on various cases of sexual assault inside the academy, among other things and would later be expelled from the academy prior to his graduation.

Years later, he discovered his medical records were falsified by the United States Air Force Academy, to include the adding of mental health conditions for which he had never been diagnosed.

In this series we explore Adam’s story, discuss Adam Derito vs the United States of America in the 10th Circuit Court and his mission to have his medical records corrected, hold those officers accountable and propose legislation to prevent this from happening to anyone else in the future.

Adam currently works in the energy industry and serves as a paratrooper in the Colorado Army National Guard. He recently started an investigative podcast series on the United States Air Force Academy called Dark Sabre (Saber).

Carry On Podcast, Ep: 012 – Veterans & Insurrection

Post Capitol Insurrection the veteran-extremist-narrative was reported by media, eagerly assigned to all veterans who participated in Jan 6th and perpetuated by other veterans who wanted to shame their own community and point a chastising finger, in addition to mass condemnation of our military with little known details or historical data on extremism. Subsequently, resulting in extremism stand-downs within our military. But was this narrative true? Was this a knee-jerk reaction? Or a little of both?

No matter where you stand on the insurrection, it’s always important to hear the other side of the story, even if it's months later. At Carry On Podcast we feel that the media has only provided one version. Although we do not support the insurrection and believe extremism should be dealt with and removed from our military, we do support due process and believe it is important to give our veterans a platform to tell their story, if they so choose.

We also believe that the Op-Eds that have been written by other veterans calling Jan 6th participants, all extremists, were careless and irresponsible at best. Writing opinion pieces that were holier-than-thou with very little factual data in the immediate aftermath, in order to further their own professional status and political agenda...did very little to help the veteran community or productively address the extremism issue.

Mr Albert Watkins is Navy Veteran, Jacob Chansley’s defense lawyer. Jacob, otherwise known as the “QAnon Shaman” became the face of Jan 6th. Al takes us on a look at Jacob’s pending case, the defense of his client, where being a veteran plays into this and what he believes the media got wrong.

Mr. Watkins is the founding member and senior counsel at St. Louis-based law firm Kodner Watkins LC. Al has other high visibility clients such as Mark & Patricia McCloskey, who made national headlines after pictures and videos showed them pointing firearms toward protesters in their gated community last year. He is no stranger to other high-profile cases such Haman v Harris and defended Major League Baseball star Jack Clark. To read more about his lustrous career find the link below.

Carry On Podcast, Ep: 11 – Cpl Thae Ohu

Cpl Thae Ohu, 27, enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 2013. She was born in a Burmese refugee camp in Thailand. Once her family received political asylum, her father brought his three daughters to the United States, settling in Fort Wayne, so they could have a future built on freedom. Two of his three daughters, Thae, and her older sister Pan Phyu joined the military, intent on serving the country that had granted them political asylum.

Thae’s first duty assignment as an Administrative Specialist was Okinawa, Japan. Here a fellow Marine would sexually assault her. It’s unclear exactly when she first reported the assault to military officials, but in 2018, now stateside, she is diagnosed with PTSD. It is important to note that over her seven-year career, she earned many awards and was known to be a trusted and hardworking Marine. However, after having revealed her issues and sexual assault, command failed her time and time again, degrading her mental health to the point where she attempted suicide several times while on active duty.

Eventually, she is recommended for medical retirement by a medical board for service-connected mental health conditions. During an April 5, 2020 fight with her then-boyfriend, she has a flashback of her assault. The civilian authorities arrest her for assault. No one is physically harmed and her then-boyfriend does not press charges. Two months later she is charged by the Marine Corps and placed into a military brig.

Fast-forward to today, she has been incarcerated now for over eight months in the Navy Consolidated Brig in Chesapeake. She is charged with attempted murder, among other charges and is expected to face a general court-martial in the next month or so. Many see this case as a systematic failure by the US Marine Corps, with a laundry list of injustices. Thae’s story has been shared widely online and in advocacy circles, as symbolic of broader issues, with how the military treats sexual assault victims, particularly those with resulting mental health issues.

Her lawyer, Eric Montalvo is a former Marine who retired from active duty after 21 years, he is a founding partner of the Federal Practice Group, located in DC. He has earned an international reputation as an aggressive, thorough and respected trial attorney. Mr. Montalvo also has been recognized as a national leader in military law.
