It definitely wasn't pretty on Saturday. But this is what we've learned about turnover margins. You have to work that much harder to overcome 3 interceptions. John Mateer struggled, but found enough magic to throw two long TD passes to Isaiah Sategna and Deion Burks. The defense sprinkled more magic of their own as Peyton Bowen jumped in the air and intercepted LSU in his own endzone after the Tigers had just returned a Mateer interception deep into OU territory. So are the Sooners an automatic selection into the College Football Playoff? The should be. And we have plenty of harsh words for those who are already trying to stir up controversy by saying they shouldn't be in the dance. The Sooners finish the regular season 10-2 and 6-2 in the SEC. Sooners win a rock fight with Missouri, move to 9-2

Sooners use defensive chaos early and a John Mateer comeback to beat Vols

A lot of people (COUGH COUGH... Eddie) didn't believe the Sooners could come to Tennessee. A lot of people can't be blamed. This program hasn't had a big road win in the SEC in the last two years. How would this be any different? It just finally was as the Sooners beat Tennessee on their own field 33-27. The defense kept the Sooners in it until the offense showed up in the second half. R Mason Thomas' 71-yard fumble return for a TD set the tempo. Tate Sandell's 3 field goals in the second quarter was another piece of the puzzle. But even though the Sooners made some awkward decisions late, they were able to survive an onside kick in two separate instances. We watched OU lose to Ole Miss and we're very confused about everything

OU's defense too much for Jackson Arnold and Auburn to overcome

No letdown from Sooners who take care of business against Temple

No, the offense was not perfect. But it's better to be wanting more after putting up 42 points than it is to be upset at a total lack of production as we were game after game a year ago. Mateer impressed, offensive line did not in 35-3 opening win

John Mateer set the OU school record for passing yards in a debut as he threw for 392 yards and 3 TDs against Illinois State in a 35-3 win. But there were some issues. The running game couldn't get going and that was largely part to an inconsistent offensive line that saw several players being swapped for others throughout the night. Defensively, it was solid but not dominating up front. And we saw a lot of wrinkles from Brent Venables with different personnel packages. One of the players who really emerged Saturday evening was tight end Jaren Kanak. Who might single handedly save the tight end position at OU. OU defense gives up big plays in 37-17 loss. On to big changes

The Sooners went into Baton Rouge expected to give LSU everything they wanted after a big win over Alabama last week. But as has happened with other road SEC contests, the Sooners let a productive first half give way to mistakes in the second half. That offense that looked so capable against Alabama disappeared. Jackson Arnold's legs kept things going for a while. But when the Sooners fell behind after a kickoff return for a touchdown and two long TD passes, OU's offensive line turned back into swiss cheese. Arnold couldn't find open receivers or didn't have time to scan the field for open receivers. The running game wasn't what we had seen building over the last month. And all of a sudden, the defense was giving up huge TD passes to a hobbled Garrett Nussmeier. But in the end, it was the end of a poor regular season. The bowl game will probably look like a mash unit after the transfer portal and players sitting out are known. But all eyes turn to OU's next offensive coordinator. The decision is expected to be known in the next few days. The gang talks about what they know on the process and what names they are hearing floating around. Jackson Arnold came up with explosive plays in the passing game, including a 90-yard TD pass to J.J. Hester. The longest ever by an OU receiver on Owen Field. The defense gave up a drive early but stiffened mightily until late in the game. Are we more or less upset after this loss to Ole Miss?

The Sooners headed to Ole Miss down a 20-point underdog. No one expected the Sooners to bring home a win, but they entered halftime with a 14-10 lead after Jackson Arnold and the OU offense put together a couple of methodical drives and the defense turned back the Rebels time and time again. But the second half was a different story. An offensive line that played their best half since starting SEC play, fell apart. They collapsed. And OU's chances at winning went with it. A couple of busts in the OU defensive secondary helped Jaxon Dart and the Ole Miss offense take the lead. And Jackson Arnold ended up being sacked 10 times on the day. All of this coming on the heels of Joe Jon Finley taking over as the offensive playcaller after Seth Littrell was fired following the loss to South Carolina. There were positives. There were negatives. And the Sooners now must move forward wondering if this thing is ever going to look like something heading in the right direction.

This offense and team have life after a 27-21 win over Auburn

It seemed like this game and this season were on the brink as the Sooners fell down 21-10 to Auburn. This was a team the Sooners circled as a win in the offseason. But with this offense, anything had become possible. Carey, Eddie and George regroup from the game and get down to business to discuss one of the greatest road comebacks in recent OU history. This doesn't mean everything is fixed, but the Sooners have a week off before the Red River Rivalry. Michael Hawkins Jr., showed us something at quarterback. The OU defense continues to play with grit and determination. They haven't had a lot of support, but they step up and make plays when it matters. Just as R Mason Thomas did once again on Saturday. Add Brenen Thompson, Bauer Sharp and J.J. Hester as capable and potentially reliable targets for Hawkins. The offensive line wasn't perfect, but they appeared to improve against a decent defensive line. In the end, the Sooners scored the only points of the fourth quarter. The offense is a disaster so OU starts over with Michael Hawkins Jr.

The Sooners lose to Tennessee 25-15 in one of the most frustrating offensive outings since Bob Stoops took over for John Blake in 1998. This OU offense hasn't just regressed, it's disappeared completely. It looks like Michael Hawkins Jr., will be the near future. But with lots of tough opponents still to be played, the prospects for the season just took a nose dive on Owen Field tonight. Could changes be on the horizon? Oklahoma's 51-3 win over Temple not exactly without flaws

The Oklahoma Sooners get the season opening blowout win over Temple as expected. But there are certainly areas of concern for fans and critics. Most notably, an offensive line that looked shaky at best. The lack of a running game against an overmatched opponent until Taylor Tatum took over late was disappointing. And an injury to Jalil Farooq that will sideline him for an extended period of time is concerning. Carey, Eddie and George are here after coming back to the Campus Corner studios from the stadium to break it all down. And it wasn't all concerning, the defense was stifling most of the night forcing turnover after turnover. The kicking game was even a major bright spot. And it appears Brent Venables defense is ready to take things to another level in year three. It's week one. So plenty of this is overreaction or reaction unjustified. U40: OU beats TCU 69-45, finishes 10-2 on the season

Oklahoma finished out the regular season by beating TCU 69-45. It wasn't a pretty game defensively but offensively, it was a great way to send out Dillon Gabriel and Drake Stoops. Brent Venables has gone from 6-7 to 10-2 and we take some time to celebrate what that should mean moving forward. And what about players like Danny Stutsman, Jalil Farooq and Billy Bowman. Will they be back with the Sooners next year? What about the transfer portal? What do the Sooners need to add? They can't take everyone. So where do they go to fill the biggest holes? That's what she said. Eddie and George turned this into a family Thanksgiving by picking at each other throughout the pod. OU wins 31-24 over BYU. But lose Gabriel for second half

It was not an easy victory. BYU put up a fight on a rainy day that made a sloppy field even more sloppy. But the concerning part of the day was losing Dillon Gabriel just before halftime to a concussion. So the question becomes whether he can be ready to play on a short week as the Sooners take on TCU Friday at 11am. The Sooners did have Jackson Arnold behind Gabriel. But as he got his feet wet as the OU starter, Gavin Sawchuk got his feet red hot as he broke off some big runs and housed it from 16 yards out. The defense wasn't great. Part of that could have been Danny Stutsman battling through food poisoning. But the secondary is getting thin and it's starting to become a problem for a team that gave up too many chunk plays. Lebby shows offense can still impress in 59-20 rout of WVU

The Sooners did it. They got a lead and built on it and built on it and built on it. Even when West Virginia took the ball 75 yards in four plays to start the game, OU answered with a 75-yard, 4 play drive of their own. Dillon Gabriel passed for 5 TDs and ran for 3. There was a brawl in the endzone, Danny Stutsman was back and leading the team in tackles. Kip Lewis started over Jaren Kanak. Drake Stoops has turned into a beast over the past two weeks and we're up late to make sure we get this thing out there. Carey and George try and explain the Big 12 tiebreaker rules even though they barely can put together sentences at this time of the morning. Basically Texas losing to Iowa State is the best medicine. And if you thought OU's Texas hangover was bad, wait until you see Oklahoma State's Bedlam hangover. We breakdown the big win and the crowd's distaste for referees.

Oklahoma loses Bedlam 27-24. Later that evening three dudes get together to talk about what happened. We've crossed some boundaries here. I will admit that. This is not the podcast to listen to with children in the car. George is fed up with this season. And he lets all of us know it. The offense continues to suffer from prosperity allergies. They just don't have a killer instinct. The defense wasn't perfect, but they were damn good at times even without Danny Stutsman. We can complain about every position on offense. But in the end, it's not cohesive, it's not reliable and it remains the most inconsistent offense we've seen in years. There's going to be a lot of hate flowing this week. Some of it came during this pod. Hopefully this is a cathartic listen and not a tough one for all the fans out there trying to figure out how the Sooners fix this.

Gabriel helps cap a game for the ages in OU's 34-30 win over Texas

Gabriel was magical at times with his feet. He made a lot of big plays with his arm. And the biggest throw of the day with just :15 seconds left. It gave the Sooners an improbable comeback victory. But it wasn't just the offense. OU's defense came in and went toe-to-toe with a team everything thought would be more physical than the Sooners. A 28-11 SMU wins shows concerns on offense

Brent Venables opens season 2 with a complete blowout victory

A Bedlam victory and a great defensive effort

The Oklahoma Sooners move to 6-5 and make themselves bowl eligible with a win over Oklahoma State Saturday night on Owen Field. It was also senior night and Drake Stoops was one of the brightest offensive stars of the night. But the offensive stars took a backseat the defense which intercepted four passes from Spencer Sanders and kept getting big stop after big stop even when the offense wasn't helping. And the offense wasn't just not helping, they were actually hurting the defense but going three-and-out and not taking enough time off the clock. For all the blame we've lobbed on players for not seeming to care about their performances this season, it was the coaching staff that stood out the most in Bedlam as they failed to control the clock on offense and kept opening the door for Oklahoma State to make a comeback. Sooners fall to Baylor and we have strong opinions

There were a lot of emotions running throughout the Baylor game. And when it was over, there were lots of emotions about the loss. We're no longer talking about conventional changes on the roster or the on the staff. We want OU fans to grab some perspective. The look at the rest of the season a certain way, and judge everything based on that. There is no Big 12 title game, no playoff and not even a bowl game at this point. The Sooners went toe-to-toe with another middling Big 12 team and this time it wasn't a total debacle. But there were still way too many mistakes to stomach. This team doesn't have the right stuff. How Venables and the staff and the players finish out the season will say more about the future of this program than the 9 games we've seen so far.

Sooners handle Iowa State 27-13, defense looks sound again

The Sooners traveled to Ames, Iowa, to face an Iowa State team that had lost four straight. But those were all close losses and the Sooners have a recent history of struggles against the Iowa State defense. It was also a case of wondering if the defense was going to show improvements after a bye week and some time to get fresh legs. It all worked out as the Sooners got a win 27-13. Jeff Lebby seemed to have Matt Campbell's offense figured out at times, but dropped passes and untimely penalties derailed some solid early drives. Thanks to kicker Zach Schmit, the Sooners took a 13-0 lead before Dillon Gabriel and the offense added more conventional TDs in the second half. The defense took a noticeable step forward as well although it wasn't perfect. Iowa State ended up throwing the ball 57 times on the day as the Sooners were stout against the run. But with three interceptions and the emergence of DaShaun White as the cheetah position, OU looked dominating at times. Iowa State did squeak back into the game, but Michael Turk finally made his presence known by pinning the Cyclones deep in their own territory late in the game. Overall a solid win and Carey and Eddie broke it down on this week's episode of the Eskridge Lexus postgame podcast.

A much needed win against Kansas

The Sooners hit Owen Field Saturday facing a surprisingly strong Kansas team. At times this looked like a blowout. At times it looked like the Oklahoma team that had lost three straight coming into this one. In the end, the Sooners held on to a lead that seemed like it should have been bigger. Dillon Gabriel threw for over 400 yards. No one was thinking about the last two weeks and the backup QB situation. And the defense started strong and finished with a whimper. All in all, the Sooners got a victory. And it's exactly what they needed heading into a bye week. But most importantly we saw some progress. And the goal is to continue seeing more and more as the season progresses. Eddie and Carey hung out in the office and knocked out a Saturday pod for the first time in weeks.

OU-TX beatdown: Something is terribly wrong in Norman

We'll just call this two angry guys airing grievance this week after OU gets shut out and embarrassed by Texas in the Red River Rivalry. It was 49-0 . The defense was terrible once again and the offense made us look prophetic when we said OU was screwed if Dillon Gabriel ever got hurt. The offense was radically different. So what does that say about Jeff Lebby? We learned that Davis Beville is definitely not the answer but we weren't given any chances to see if anyone else could do something better. Where is the QB development in Norman? And the defense? Brent Venables seemed shell-shocked and befuddled after the game. He had no real answers after a second straight week of inept play from his defense. It actually might have been better than the TCU game, but it was still horrible. The OU program has fallen so fast in a year. Why is that? Who is to blame? And what can Venables and his staff do to figure out how to play better when Saturday rolls around? And is anyone on the hot seat already? By the end, Carey didn't even want to be here anymore. It was a frustrating weekend and most people just spent Saturday night getting drunk. We dealt with the reality of it on Sunday. And it just made us want to start drinking again. So enjoy!

It's another baffling outcome as Oklahoma loses to Kansas State 41-34 in a game where OU couldn't get out of its own way to even seriously threaten the Wildcats on Owen Field. Thankfully we have an office on Campus Corner and Mike Hosty was playing next door at The Deli. Because Fox Sports/Bally Sports videographer Christopher Fitzpatrick stopped by to wallow in misery with us. He probably was the only one who had a realistic take on where the Sooners go from here. It was tough to watch Brent Venables and Dillon Gabriel in the postgame press conference. It was certainly the lowest moment for everyone since the Venables' era began. Nebraska beatdown shows things are changing in Norman

The atmosphere led to a fast start for the Huskers, but Dillon Gabriel and the OU defense were up to the challenge as they quickly struck back and kept piling on the touchdowns. What we learned was that things are really changing in Norman around this football team. Not only are they playing defense, but Venables is changing the mindset. We break it all down in this episode and even bow down to Eric Gray. I mean, what is there really to gripe about after this one? It was a convincing win on the road over a historic rival and the Sooners were down for a beating. It was an incredible day on Owen Field. Not because we finally got to see Dillon Gabriel at QB1 for Oklahoma. Not because Jeff Lebby is a madman that made Gabriel play for both teams or that we could barely keep up with the speed of his offense. It wasn't the fire of Brent Venables who commanded the day with his microphone at midfield. It was the buzz inside the stadium generated from the return of hundreds of former players, some of the best to ever it do it own Owen Field. But at the center of it all was Baker Mayfield, who had his statue placed in Heisman Park and reminded everyone inside the stadium what passion about being a Sooner should mean to all in attendance.

But special teams were a letdown for whatever reason. But is that surprising? So many questions coming out of a win. We're trying to be excited to be back in the win column. We're trying. There's is no denying it after a second week, Caleb Williams is Oklahoma's quarterback. This OU offense looks completely different under the direction of Williams. Billy Bowman wasn't an instant success at cornerback and what could have been a laugher was too close because of TCU's big plays. Also, we can't help but notice that Lincoln Riley and Caleb Williams seem to be connecting on the sidelines as the offense continues to look better and better each week. It was one of the craziest days of football the OU-Texas rivalry has ever seen. There were huge swings of emotion brought on by big plays, big mistakes and big QB changes. Postgame: It's never quite what you expect even when it's good

Much like OU's 37-31 win over Kansas State, the Eskridge Lexus Postgame podcast followed a similar script. Recorded at midnight starting at a gas station just outside of Wichita, Eddie and Carey started recording the pod. It went well, but around 3 a.m. when Carey finally got home, he crashed and failed to finish uploading the pod. Thankfully, he recovered before the day was done and got it uploaded. Alex Grinch is probably mad at us as he was his defense. Like Spencer Rattler, he had a great performance. But sleep, like boneheaded penalties, took it's toll on the victory. Eddie and Carey breakdown what we saw in Manhattan and there was a lot of good. But the defense's inability to get off the field against a hobbled Skylar Thompson was frustrating to watch at times. One thing is sure, OU and Alex Grinch will be happy to never see Skylar Thompson and Deuce Vaughn together again. Also, we did a lot of speeding in our Eskridge Lexus. Don't tell OHP.

POSTGAME: OU wins 16-13, but tonight will always be Rattler's boo bird game

Oklahoma never led West Virginia Saturday night on Owen Field until the clock ran out. That's when Gabe Brkic hit a 30-yard field goal to give the Sooners a 16-13 victory over the Mountaineers. But this game will be remembered or something even more memorable. Fans were boo'ing Spencer Rattler. And others started chanting, "We want Caleb" during the game. How Rattler handles this going forward will define his legacy. But he also needs more help from the offensive line and some faith in the run game from his head coach and playcaller, Lincoln Riley. The defense had a very solid night holding WVU to just 226 total yards of offense. All you can do is just keep moving forward and thank the lucky stars you aren't Texas or Iowa State this week. And you seek out that opponent that will help you find your old friend: adversity. And Texas? Seriously? Wow! Also the sun rises in the east and Iowa always beats Iowa State early in the season. Oklahoma takes home Big 12 Championship

After OU lost to Iowa State and started off their Big 12 Conference season 0-2, no one expected they would get a rematch in the Big 12 Championship game. But that's exactly what happened and the OU defense put up another monster performance up front and forced 3 interceptions out of Brock Purdy. Carey and Eddie breakdown Oklahoma's 27-21 over Iowa State and had out plenty of deserved praise. A bowl game will be announced soon and then the offseason could determine if these Sooners are going to head into 2021 as one of the favorites to win it all next year. The offense stalled, Lincoln Riley got too conservative and the game got close in the end. But the Sooners won it all again and continue marching forward to bigger and better victories in the future.

OU overcomes massive absences on defense, still plays lights out

Oklahoma beat Baylor 27-14 Saturday night in the final home game of this crazy 2020 season. It wasn't the type of game anyone expected.
