“We Are So Polarized Right Now”

Abdul El-Sayed says America is ready for its first Muslim governor. So he's thrown his hat in the ring in his home state of Michigan. This first-generation American, former star athlete, Rhodes Scholar and university professor cut his teeth in public service as director of Detroit's public health system, a job he took on at just 30 years old. Now, he says, he's fighting to lead the state that won Donald Trump the presidency -- by campaigning on unity, hope and faith in a new generation of leadership.

In this episode, he shares why he's more concerned than ever before about the possibility of war. When asked how the U.S. can avoid further conflict, he says there are "no good, clear, swift solutions," and the U.S. is currently implementing the "least bad solution," which is to keep open lines of communication with North Korean diplomats.

Zak Ebrahim's father is notorious for all the wrong reasons - a convicted terrorist, serving a life sentence for conspiracy in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. Ebrahim went on to reject his father's ideology, changed his name, and became an advocate for peace, often working with the same people he was once taught to hate. In this conversation, Amna digs into what made him question his upbringing, and whether or not he'll ever see his father again.
