Effective leadership requires living in both the present and the future simultaneously. It's the leader's job to craft a vision for the future and get others to buy into and share that vision. The leader should connect with people with both good intent and good perception and reception so that others share the vision and move there with them. The leader needs to get really good at describing the future as they live in the present. It's also important to connect with people in personal and meaningful ways that are uniquely meaningful to each of them. Finally, the leader must recognize and reinforce when people help move from the present into the future. By fostering a shared vision and recognizing champions, leaders can start living in the next future and connect in the next present to keep everybody moving forward.

The episode emphasizes the importance of recognizing and reinforcing the contributions of team members who share and actively work towards the shared vision. Jeff Akin explains that as a leader, it is not only your job to craft a vision for the future, but more importantly, to get others to buy into and share that vision. This can be achieved by fostering a shared vision and recognizing your champions. By doing so, it enables you to start living in the next future and connect with people with both good intent and good perception and reception so that others share your vision and move there with you. The episode also highlights the importance of understanding what motivates people and how to use that as recognition or to encourage motivation. Ultimately, recognizing and reinforcing the contributions of team members who share and actively work towards the shared vision is crucial for success.

Gordon is a highly acclaimed by Inc. 100 as a leadership speaker, an award-winning author, a recognized leadership guru and, most importantly, a Star Trek fan!

Gordon Tredgold is uniquely talented at quickly creating effective plans of action for corporations. He is renowned in the business world for delivering projects well ahead of their deadlines. The most prominent achievement in that realm was delivering a project valued at 30 million dollars in a sixth of the time it was estimated to take. The estimate was 18 months, he did it in 3. 

Gordon’s Childhood Growing up, Gordon played rugby and enjoyed doing math. These were big inspirations for him as he progressed through life. Gordon was not a very large boy, and as such he had to rely on his intellect and strategic ability to win rugby matches. He learned that he could rally his teammates around a simple plan, and that as long as they really believed in it, they were successful more often than not. Furthermore, solving complex math problems also requires one to devise a plan and put it into action. So, this is an area where Gordon further sharpened those skills. 

Early Career Gordon graduated from Manchester Institute of Science and Technology in 1984 with a bachelor's degree in mathematics. Knowing early on that he was a brilliant strategist, Gordon felt that he could make a name for himself advising companies, particularly, IT companies. He excelled quickly and began taking on more and more complex projects voluntarily. 

His Books Gordan is the author of FAST: 4 Principles Every Business Needs to Achieve Success and Drive Results. In this book, he details how he has been successful and what is unique about his approach to problem solving and strategy development. He also wrote _Leadership: It’s a Marathon Not a Sprint: Everything You Need to Know about Sustainable Achievements_where he describes his leadership abilities and details what skills, talents, and qualities are needed for a leader to be effective. 

Gordon also gave a TEDx speech at TEDx Belfort. And he did it in French!!

Captain Kirk both completely blows it and gets it right. He’s leading an away team mission that goes awry and he ends up getting poisoned by a mugatu. 

Why was he leading the away team you ask? Fantastic question.

Before he does that, though, demonstrates vulnerability and impressive emotional intelligence. He, once again, shows he is a strong manager that invites opinions, even when they are different than his.

Let's be honest, this is probably the worst episode in all of Star Trek. Despite all of that, there are very valuable leadership lessons in this one.

Picard creates an environment on the bridge where he leans on the collective expertise of the people of his team. He's not interested in being the hero, he just wants the best possible outcome and by listening to those around him, he's able to do that.

What does it mean to be coachable? We hear about coaching all the time, but what about getting coached; being coachable? Picard demonstrates what that looks like with extreme grace, especially given the terrible situation he finds himself in.

Fundamentals, Change, and a Personal Mission Statement Jeff points out strong leadership characteristics for each character. First off, McCoy had to deal with a situation he was not familiar with at all: an entirely new being he has never seen. He says, “When in doubt, the book prevails,” referring to the fundamentals, identifying the variables. Jeff relates that by going back to the basics, you’ll most likely do it wrong the first time, and the rest will run smoothly, rather than doing it wrong every single time.

Second, Spock’s take on the necessity of change represents adaptability. As Spock said, “Change is the essential process of all existence,” trying to persuade Bele that Lokai can change. The premise is that change cannot be stopped; the only thing that can be done is accept and adapt to it. In the workplace context, organizations must grasp the concept of change, so they tend to outperform those that do not and continue to compete and exist. Accepting change in the workplace is a powerful shift because you are compelled to do things differently and better.

Lastly, Kirk maintained a culture that created the best example of the Federation because he aligned his mission statement to that of the Enterprise. Jeff’s take on this is that one is effective in leading by having an aligned mission statement. Having the same goal as the organization ensures a healthy workplace.

The Value of a Support System Like the crew in this episode, it can be challenging to show up when things are falling apart. When you are the leader of a team, one of your duties is to motivate the team, or more accurately, to create an environment in which people can choose to be inspired. A few ways to do so include spending time with people, hearing their problems, and working with them towards solutions. At the beginning of Episode 25, Sisko keeps people in a positive space by connecting them with the mission and actively participating in conversations with his team. But where does he go when he needs that same encouragement? As a person, we need a support system, a safe space to just be, or another person to encourage us. Sisko’s son did it for him, so like Sisko, everyone needs someone to support them.

Maximizing You and Your Team’s Efficiency As a manager, you want to maximize the efficiency of each team member. To do so, you need to ask the question, what do they want or what do they like? Most people feel rewarded when they know their work matters and is related to their interests and values. Hence, talk to your team and find out what they are, and then do them. The results will amaze you. Take the strength-based approach, for instance. With this approach, you learn the person's strengths and interests and then connect them to their work as much as possible, like incentive-based economics. Now, not every situation you find yourself in will fit this approach. But if you can learn what your team members value, you can find opportunities to connect them to the team’s overall mission. In this episode, Jake and Nog work to connect people to what was important to them. And on that journey, they improve the morale of everyone they helped. The goal was to help Sisko, but they allowed everyone to get there. If you follow that strength-based or incentive-based economic model, you might be able to do the same.

Strong Relationship and Professional Distance

Like the possible effects that could arise from Janeway's relationship with her crew, many leaders also worry about how they can genuinely connect with their people while maintaining a professional understanding of boundaries. For this, the term professional distance was coined and discussed by Dr. Ana Corbo Crehan of the Centre for Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics at the University of Melbourne. She defines the whole concept as the set understanding of a leader's ability to fulfill a professional obligation and be seen to do so in an impartial and non-exploitive manner.

For Jeff, failing to keep a professional distance can impact treatment, create impressions, and cause allegations –something he's proven and experienced himself. Being too close and casual to team members, while it has its advantages, may affect your decision-making as a leader to some far extent. If you get too close to someone, someone else may worry about favoritism. If you interact too coldly, this may create a disconnect within the workforce. Establishing a connection with your team is essential to nourish closeness. Doing so with propriety is what professional distance promotes. If you're human enough to the people you lead, you can be a friend to them without losing the awareness that you're still their leader with professional distance.

He Stands Up and Sits Down

Ballsy is a word that Jeff describes Captain Jean-Luc Picard in the many interactions he’s shared with Encounter at Farpoint’s main characters. In one scene, where the enterprise is halted by a mysterious force that Troi was able to pick up earlier from the situation, Captain Picard carries himself to meet the threat that is Q, who proceeds to extinguish and freeze one officer. Picard then handles this display of power with unshaken confidence and stance as he continues to stand right up to Q, flashing leadership and questioning him.

In another circumstance up against Q, this time as their Judge, Picard boldly faces humanity’s alleged crimes of savagery as Troi, Data, and Yar’s representative. In a post-apocalyptic court setting, wherein they’re held in front of blood clamoring people and securities armed with guns, a legal overseer named Bailiff orders Picard’s party to all stand as criminals – to which Picard responds to with a cold stare before shortly sitting down. Even when their most basic and bare being as humans is being questioned, Picard can present himself sure and collected.
