By combining these practices with his undergraduate studies in philosophy and his master’s degree in Transpersonal Psychology, he’s developed his own transformational practice for healing, change, and manifestation called Spirit Work.

Katie Featherston is best known for playing the lead role in Paramount's 2009 smash hit Paranormal Activity, which earned her the Best Actress award at the 2009 Screamfest Film Festival, and has been ranked among many critics' lists of the "Best Horror Movies" ever made. Featherston has also appeared in many of the subsequent sequels, and was brought on to appear in multiple episodes of ABC's The River produced by Steven Spielberg. Gillan went from Doctor Who fame to franchise movie star with roles in Guardians of the Galaxy, Jumanji, and Gunpowder Milkshake — as well as indie dramas All Creatures Here Below, and The Party’s Just Beginning (which she wrote and directed).

Now, with Late Bloomers, Gillan plays Louise, a 28-year-old Brooklynite adrift in life, who finds herself suddenly single and grappling with her identity as a musician. While she struggles with her underlying depression, a reckless drunken stumble lands her with a broken hip and leads to a stint in a physical therapy ward with patients twice her age. Here, she crosses paths with Antonina (played by Margaret Sophie Stein), a cantankerous elderly Polish woman who speaks no English. Reluctantly, Louise takes on the role of Antonina's caregiver, a situation neither of them welcomes. As they navigate their begrudging relationship, they confront the realities of aging, forcing Louise to consider her own journey into adulthood.

Conquest is the result of a mentorship program with Northern FanCon. For the past few years now, FanCon has received support from the film industry catalyst Creative BC for workshops and panels. These guests are of quality pedigree - Writer's Guild award winners, Emmy award winners, Golden Globe award winners. During the course of the 3 days of FanCon, they deliver masterclasses in their respective fields behind the camera. This initiative was designed to foster interest in film industry development and establish Prince George as a shooting location for productions. Relationships made in the Creative Corner have led to 4 feature films shot in Prince George in the last two years. In 2 of these films, Prince George portrayed itself garnering a great deal of benefit for local tourism efforts. This past May, the Creative Corner levelled up by actually shooting our short film Conquest at Northern FanCon with the film industry experts of the Creative Corner partnered with local less experienced counterparts in a unique mentorship activation.

Muskegon Michigan's UFO 30 Years Later

A mass UFO sighting took place in Muskegon Michigan 30 years ago, and the mystery remains. This episode we talk to a key witness of the event.

On March 8, 1994, more than 300 people across 42 counties of Michigan — and as far away as 200 Miles — saw strange lights above Lake Michigan for a period of several hours. Along with police officers, documented 911 calls, FAA operators, and other reliable witnesses, Jack Bushong of the National Weather Service was manning the radar, and tracking this strange phenomena. Bushong joins Talking Strange to discuss this occurrence, and is joined by Bill Konkolesky, state director of the Michigan Mutual UFO Network.

About the guests:

Jack Bushong grew up in Muskegon, Michigan, and knew from an early age that he wanted to be a meteorologist, having always been interested in the weather, astronomy, and science. He received a bachelor’s degree in Meteorology from Florida State University in 1988 and was 29 years old when he was working at the National Weather Service in Muskegon on the night of a dramatic UFO event he tracked on radar. Shortly after the event, he moved to Georgia and became a hydro-meteorologist. He retired in 2016, after an illustrious career with numerous awards and promotions, and now wants to share what happened on the night of March, 8, 1994.

Bill Konkolesky has been State Director of the Michigan Chapter of the Mutual UFO Network since 2004. He joined in the organization in 1993 after reporting some of his personal UFO encounters and now, along with his MUFON responsibilities, also does frequent public presentations on the phenomenon and has contributed to numerous UFO related books and television productions. He’s also the author of Experiencer: Raised in Two Worlds, and returns to the Talking Strange show for a second time.

Creepy Cars at Reno's National Automobile Museum

Phil MacDougall, president of the National Automobile Museum in Reno, Nevada, joins the show to discuss the landmark's 240 cars, their history, and some of the spooky stories connected to them. From cars owned by Elvis and Frank Sinatra, to a potentially haunted car that once belonged to James Dean, the stories of the National Automobile Museum cover a lot of ground.

The 105,000 square foot National Automobile Museum's collection of 240 cars began with casino owner Bill Harrah, and continued after his death. Opened in 1989, the site was reported to have set the standard for automobile museums around the world. Since then, it has received many accolades and today it is recognized as one of 10 Best Automobile Museums in the U.S. Big thanks to the Reno-Tahoe Territory for the support in arranging this interview.

In the new film Destroy All Neighbors, starring Alex Winter (Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure) and Jonah Ray Rodrigues (Mystery Science Theater 3000), a self-absorbed prog-rock musician runs afoul of his new neighbor which leads to a lot of undead corpses and becomes a "twisted splatter-comedy about a deranged journey of self-discovery."

Directed by Josh Forbes and written by Jared Logan, Charles Pieper and Mike Benner with Winter and Rodrigues producing as well as starring, Destroy All Neighbors — debuting on the Shudder streaming service January 12 — tells the story of William Brown (Jonah Ray Rodrigues), a neurotic, self-absorbed musician determined to finish his prog-rock magnum opus. He faces a creative roadblock in the form of a noisy and grotesque neighbor named Vlad (Alex Winter). Finally working up the nerve to demand that Vlad keep it down, William inadvertently decapitates him. But, while attempting to cover up one murder, William’s accidental reign of terror causes victims to pile up and become undead corpses who torment and create more bloody detours on his road to prog-rock Valhalla. Destroy All Neighbors is a twisted splatter-comedy about a deranged journey of self-discovery full of goopy practical FX, a well-known ensemble cast, and LOTS of blood.

The Exorcist at 50 & Demonic Belief

Authors Joseph Laycock and Eric Harrelson discuss with host Aaron Sagers their new book The Exorcist Effect: Horror, Religion, and Demonic Belief on the 50th anniversary of the iconic film that changed the horror genre, and impacted belief in demons and possession.

On Dec. 26, 1973, The Exorcist — directed by William Friedkin, based on the book by William Peter Blatty — debuted in theaters. Released with low expectations, it became a box office hit, and radically changed the horror genre as serious and realistic. But it also led to a wave of reports of vomiting in theaters, people claiming they themselves were possessed by demons and it became a great recruitment tool for the Catholic Church, and career launch for Ed and Lorraine Warren.

In the new book The Exorcist Effect: Horror, Religion, and Demonic Belief, authors Joseph Laycock and Eric Harrelson explore the ongoing relationship between horror movies and Western religious culture, with a focus on the period from 1968 to the modern day through the lens of The Exorcist — as well as Rosemary's Baby, and The Omen — widely believed to be based on a true story. The book outlines a cycle in which religious beliefs and practices become the basis of films — including 2013's The Conjuring — that in turn inspire religious beliefs, practices, and experiences in response. Drawing on psychology, sociology, and folklore studies, the authors theorize how film informs religious experience and shapes religious culture.

On Nov. 23, 1953, an Air Force jet was scrambled from Kinross air base in Michigan's Upper Peninsula to intercept an unknown object in restricted airspace over the Great Lakes, and near the Canadian Border. After a dogged pursuit, the jet containing Airmen Felix Moncla and Robert L. Wilson disappeared. And what ensued was a brief search yielding no wreckage, and 70 years later, no answers. The American and Canadian air force explanations as to what happened conflicted with one another, and the families of the missing were told differing stories. But there have been strange circumstances surrounding the incident, including hoaxes and stonewalling. Acclaimed UFO Researchers from Michigan -- John E.L. Director Jerry Rothwell discusses re-investigating the case of The Enfield Poltergeist, one of the most famous alleged hauntings of modern times — for the new four-part "hybrid docuseries" on AppleTV+, available Oct. 27. The Enfield Poltergeist inspired the film The Conjuring 2, and is the basis for an upcoming stage play starring Catherine Tate. But the new series features hundreds of hours of rare audio archive, first-hand witnesses and the benefit of 40 years of hindsight. According to the synopsis, the series is an ambitious genre piece that will, like any good detective story, sway the audience between belief and disbelief. And director Rothwell explores our universal and timeless fascination with the unexplained and the idea of trauma impacting our reality. It’s also a notable project because Rothwell reconstructed the Hodgson home in North London, and cast actors to portray the real-life people involved in the case, but has the actors lip-synching to the actual audio recorded by paranormal investigator Maurice Gross.

Star Megan Suri (Netflix's Never Have I Ever) and writer/director Bishal Dutta join host Aaron Sagers to discuss It Lives Inside, the new horror movie opening September 22, 2023, which brings an ancient South Asian demon to the Los Angeles suburbs.

A teen-focused film, It Lives Inside tells the story of Samidha — or "Sam" — a high school student in L.A. desperate to fit in. She rejects her Indian culture (and her Indian mother’s old ways) in an effort to be like everyone else. But when a mythological demonic spirit called a Pischach latches onto her former best friend, she must come to terms with her heritage in order to defeat it. From the producers of Get Out, and distributed by Neon, the film is written by Bishal Dutta and Ashish Mehta. After generating buzz at SXSW last March 2023, the film finally arrives in theaters September 22, 2023.

The movie evokes modern supernatural horror like The Conjuring as well as suburban teen horror flicks like A Nightmare on Elm Street, but does so by introducing Western audiences to South Asian Indian lore and demons. The film is the feature directorial debut by Dutta, who was born in India, grew up in California since the age of four, and was inspired by a scary story told to him by his grandfather.

Aaron spoke with Dutta at San Diego Comic Con last July, and with star Megan Suri the week of Sept 18, leading up to the film's release.

The Last Voyage of the Demeter, in theaters now, is Based on a single chilling chapter from Bram Stoker’s classic novel Dracula. It tells the terrifying story of the merchant ship Demeter, which was chartered to carry private cargo—fifty unmarked wooden crates—from Carpathia to London.

The film stars Corey Hawkins (In the Heights, Straight Outta Compton) as Clemens, a doctor who joins the Demeter crew, Aisling Franciosi (Game of Thrones, The Nightingale) as an unwitting stowaway, Liam Cunningham (Game of Thrones, Clash of the Titans) as the ship’s captain and David Dastmalchian (Dune, the Ant-Man franchise) as the Demeter’s first mate.

Director André Øvredal also directed Trollhunter, Scary Stories To Tell in the Dark, Autopsy of Jane Doe, and Mortal. Andre joined Talking Strange's Aaron Sagers to talk about this missing tale of the Dracula lore, what makes Dracula an enduring movie monster, and what other scary stories André wants to tell in the dark. Now, she has a new graphic novel out Aug. 8 called Mother Nature, which is an eco-horror about supernatural forces, a young woman, and oil company's domination of a town. Co-written by Russell Goldman with art by Karl Stevens, the book is already set to become a Blumhouse Productions movie with Curtis set to direct. (Curtis could not discuss her role in Haunted Mansion as Madame Leota due to the SAG-AFTRA actor's strike to secure better working conditions).

Then David Dastmalchian returns to Talking Strange for a third time to gives us an update on his Count Crowley comic with Dark Horse Comics, as well as discuss the new Count Crowley fright mask, and tease his comic Knights vs. Samurai with legend Todd McFarlane. David generally also dips into the world of monsters and other stuff he wants to geek out about. (David Dastmalchian currently stars in Oppenheimer and in The Last Voyage of the Demeter vampire horror movie. He was not able to discuss these films due to the SAG-AFTRA strike).

Small Talk: ‘Talk To Me’ Meaning & Ending Explained

In the new paranormal pop culture film Talk To Me, which opened on July 28, a group of Australian teens discover a new kind of high in communing with the dead, by briefly allowing possession of their bodies via an embalmed hand of mysterious origin that serves as a gateway. There are rules to be followed with the spirit communication, and when those are broken, the character Mia (Sophie Wilde) learns the dead are not content with a temporary pass into the realm of the living.

Directed by Danny and Michael Philippou, the A24 film pays homage to cinematic tropes, and real-world rituals, culminating in a finale that warrants further examination. Host Aaron Sagers investigates the paranormal aspect of Talk to Me, as well as the larger psychological subtexts hidden in its bleak ending.

Inspired by the classic theme park attraction, “Haunted Mansion” is about a woman and her son who enlist a motley crew of so-called spiritual experts to help rid their home of supernatural squatters. The film is set in New Orleans at the Gracey Manor we know from Disneyland, and stars LaKeith Stanfield as a scientist with paranormal tech, Tiffany Haddish as a medium, Owen Wilson as a priest, Danny DeVito as a historian, Rosario Dawson as the mom, and the excellent newcomer Chase W. Dillon as her son, as well as Jamie Lee Curtis as Madame Leota, and Jared Leto as the hat box ghost.

Comic book writer Joshua Williamson’s current project is a nightmare, but it’s also a dream come true because he is injecting horror into DC Comics with Knight Terrors, the comic book publishing event that kicks off with the oversize special Knight Terrors: First Blood #1 on July 4 with art by Howard Porter. The main Knight Terrors story will take place over four issues written by Williamson with art by Giuseppe Camuncoli beginning with Knight Terrors #1 on July 11.

Knight Terrors revolves around a new villain named Insomnia who has plunged the entire world into a realm of their own deeply personal nightmares. Meanwhile Boston Brand, aka Deadman, becomes the unlikely hero who, along with the help of Batman, and Batman’s body, is on the case to figure out who Insomnia is. The line-wide event has also included two-issue miniseries spotlighting a Super Hero or Super-Villain confronting their worst nightmares in a Nightmare Realm. So readers will get to delve into the nightmares of Batman, Superman, Joker, Harley Quinn, Catwoman, Poison Ivy and more.

Why Pain Hurts and Why It Doesn’t Have To. Her work has been featured in the New York Times, Parade, Atlantic Monthly, and NPR’s Science Friday.

Talking J. Allen Hynek with Son, Paul Hynek

J. Allen Hynek was the astronomer, professor and father of UFOlogy who advised three Air Force UFO studies (Project Sign, Project Grudge, and Project Blue Blook) from the 1940s to late 1960s. He went from from skeptic to being an open minded advocate of unexplained phenomena who consulted with Steven Spielberg on "Close Encounters of the Third Kind." But he was also a father to five children, including son Paul Hynek.

In the following interview, Paul talks about growing up with a media celebrity and UFO researcher, and about meeting Spielberg as a kid and again as an adult. He shares stories about spending two weeks on a cruise with astronaut Neil Armstrong (as well as sci-fi legend Isaac Asimov and a young Neil deGrasse Tyson). Paul also talks about his father's interest in the occult, his parents tolerance about his drug use, and now his own experimentation with psychedelics and how it applies to UFOs and other phenomena — which he'll likewise discuss at the upcoming Contact in the Desert event June 2-4, 2023, in Indian Wells, California.

Paul Hynek is also a movie producer and was involved in making Avatar, Lord of the Rings, Planet of the Apes, Tintin, and numerous other movies and games. He was consultant on the History network’s show Project Blue Book, a fictionalized adaptation of his father’s cases. He also happens to be an accomplished author and entrepreneur in his own right, is a Wharton MBA, and an Adjunct Professor of Finance and Accounting at Pepperdine University.

FROM unravels the mystery of a nightmarish town that traps all those who enter. As the unwilling residents fight to keep a sense of normalcy and search for a way out, they must also survive the threats of the surrounding forest – including the terrifying creatures that come out when the sun goes down. In season two, hidden truths about the nature and terrifying origins of the town begin to emerge, even as life for its residents is plunged into chaos by the arrival of mysterious newcomers. And Harold Perrineau leads the ensemble cast as Boyd, the town’s reluctant sheriff.

Perrineau has had an incredible career, appearing in Oz, Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet, The Matrix franchise, Sons of Anarchy, The Best Man movies and TV series, and some of our favorites, the Constantine show and of course, and playing Michael on LOST.

Talking Irish Folk-Horror Unwelcome with Director Jon Wright

In the new folk horror movie Unwelcome, an English couple moves to the Irish countryside only to discover that goblins called Redcaps live behind their garden, and demand to be fed daily, or else they become hungry, and ornery.

Director Jon Wright (Grabbers, Robot Overlords) joins Talking Strange to discuss Unwelcome, the film that's both a creature feature as well as something of a home invasion film. It begins with an English couple mother-to-be Maya and husband Jaime (played by Hannah John-Kamen, from Ant-Man and The Wasp, and the MCU’s upcoming Thunderbolts, and Douglas Booth Netflix’s The Dirt, Jupiter Ascending) threatened in their London flat, only to move to the Irish countryside due to a home that’s been left to them by an aunt who has passed away. They set about doing renovations on the home, as well as interacting with superstitious townspeople who warn them to set out food nightly for the Redcaps…but another threat involves a family of local contractors who are up to no good and resent the English interlopers.

In the following conversation, Wright and host Aaron Sagers discuss the folkloric origins of the film, and the tonal balance. He also reveals more about the crazy ending and sequel ideas for this cult classic in the making.

Talking Kindred Spirits with Amy Bruni, Adam Berry & Chip Coffey

Kindred Spirits stars paranormal investigators Amy Bruni, Adam Berry & psychic medium Chip Coffey join host Aaron Sagers to discuss the Season 7 of the paranormal investigative show on Travel Channel and Discovery+. In the latest season, Bruni discusses a theme of regret this season, and how that inspired them to examine their lives.

For those that haven't watched Kindred, the show follows Bruni, Berry and Coffey as these intrepid investigators help people who are tormented by the dead by settling spirit activity, capturing evidence and bringing closure to each location they visit. Utilizing several tools to communicate with spirits, they will discover shocking stories by visiting some of America’s most haunted homes and historic sites.

In the Season 7 premiere, “Broken Spirits,” the investigators travel to Greene County Historical Society and Museum, a former poorhouse in Pennsylvania. For nearly 100 years, the institution was said to be a safe haven for the impoverished and disenfranchised. But, in reality, it was run more like an asylum. In the 1890s, a cruel and sadistic overseer named William B. Cage took over the institution. He was known to beat the inmates and he was even accused of chaining individuals in the basement rooms where he allowed them to starve as punishment for minor infractions. Interestingly, all of the inmates who made these reports disappeared from the records. Were they sent away, did they move or were they permanently silenced by Cage is uncertain. When the knowledge became public, Cage was removed. In 1968, the facility reopened and became a cultural center. Today, employees and guests report unexplained footsteps and many have witnessed full-bodied apparitions. Does William Cage or troubled inmates still walk the halls? Bruni, Berry and Coffey investigate multiple locations on the site, including the basement where shackles can still be seen, in hopes of resolving the pains of the past.

Talking Christmas Ghost Stories with Mark Gatiss

Writer/Director/Actor Mark Gatiss, best known for his work on Doctor Who, Sherlock, Dracula talks about his TV film Count Magnus, and the English tradition of ghost stories at Christmas, and he fascination of true ghost stories.

When it comes to the English tradition of telling ghosts stories during Christmas, Charles Dickens still reigns supreme, with medieval scholar M.R. James in a very close second place. But in recent years Mark Gatiss has quickly earned mention alongside those two by reinvigorating the United Kingdom’s heritage of holiday horror.

Best known for his work on Doctor Who, Sherlock, Dracula and the comedy troupe League of Gentlemen, Gatiss has become the force behind the BBC’s revival of A Ghost Story for Christmas series of television films. The original run of annuals was largely helmed by Lawrence Gordon Clark, and aired from 1971 until ’78, before returning sporadically in 2005. Gatiss made his directorial debut in 2013 with The Tractate Middoth, the Ghost Story adaptation of James’s work. He has since written and directed three more for the series — James adaptations Martin’s Close and The Mezzotint, and the original story The Dead Room — along with writing mini-series Crooked House (2008) and writing and directing The Amazing Mr. Blunden (2021) TV film, which both aired at Christmas.

Now he is back as writer and director for “Count Magnus,” the long-anticipated adaptation of M.R. James’ 1904 work, which airs December 23 on BBC Two, and drops the same day on streaming service BritBox. In this interview Gatiss speaks about his collection of real-life ghost stories, and his love for season’s screamings.

This year marks both the 125th anniversary of Bram Stoker's Dracula, as well as the 100th anniversary of its unauthorized film adaptation Nosferatu. Stoker's 1897 work of Gothic horror introduced one of the world's most recognized fictional characters Count Dracula, and altered vampire lore. Meanwhile, the 1922 German expressionist film by F.W. Murnau, changed aspects of Dracula, contributed further to lore — and kicked off a protracted copyright battle with Stoker's widow, Florence. Dacre Stoker is the great grand-nephew of Bram Stoker, and the international best-selling co-author of Dracula the Un-Dead, the official family-endorsed sequel to Dracula.

Talking Pirates & Cryptids with Rhys Darby

Rhys Darby, the comedian known for Flight of the Conchords, What We Do In The Shadows, Jumanji, is an obvious choice as a Talking Strange guest because of his long-running paranormal podcast The Cryptid Factor. But he is also starring in the new comedy Our Flag Means Death, premiering on HBO Max March 3, produced and co-starring his mate Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok, What We Do In The Shadows). The 10-episode season is (very) loosely based on the true adventures of 18th century would-be Gentleman Pirate Stede Bonnet (Darby). After trading in a refined life to be a swashbuckler, he becomes captain of the pirate ship Revenge. Struggling to earn the respect of his potentially mutinous crew, Stede’s fortunes change after a fateful run-in with the infamous Captain Blackbeard, played by Waititi.

Talking Hellbender with Adams Family Films

The Adams family is the creative team behind Shudder’s new occult coming of age horror Hellbender. The film tells the story of 16-year-old Izzy (Zelda Adams), who suffers from a rare illness that has kept her isolated on a mountaintop with her Mother (Toby Poser) her whole life. After she eats a live worm as part of a juvenile game with Amber (Lulu Adams), she finds a violent hunger awakened within her. To understand the hunger, she must learn the dark secrets of her family's past and the ancient power in her bloodline.

Hellbender is the latest film from family-run Wonder Wheel Productions, and it premieres on Shudder on February 24, 2022. It is written, directed, produced, scored, and edited by Toby Poser, John Adams, and Zelda Adams.
