Smart said the elite Alabama teams from 2012–2015 would “beat the dog out of” today’s college football teams because of one major difference: depth. He believes the game itself has not changed as much as the rosters have, with today’s programs forced to play younger, less-developed players because NIL, the transfer portal, and roster turnover have made it harder to build long-term depth.

• The 2026 NFL Draft Round One is in the books and the Alabama Crimson Tide has extended an impressive streak. The Miami Dolphins selected Alabama offensive tackle Kadyn Proctor with pick 12 extending an Alabama Football streak of first round selections to 18 consecutive years and the streak of multiple first round selections to ten consecutive years.

• That second streak continued because the Los Angeles Rams selected Alabama Football QB Ty Simpson with pick 13, a surprise to many that Simpson went that high. Simpson had been a large focus of the night as the presumed second QB off the board but many analysts thought he’d go lower than 13.

• The College Football Playoff Management Committee continued to weigh multiple potential formats during their annual meetings this week. However, despite openness in the room, no decision was made.

• SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey is holding strong for a a 16-team College Football Playoff as momentum seems to have grown for the Big Ten proposal of 24 teams.

• A potential 24-team playoff would add 12 games and an additional round of the tournament. The committee received presentations from analysts who projected what viewership could look like with a changed format, along with conversations with network partners.

• Schedule remains one of the greatest complications. Historically, the national title game was set for the second Monday of January. With the 12-team playoff, it's pushed at least two weeks later. Additionally, as the season goes longer, the NFL starts to encroach.

• The NFL starts playing games on Saturday in December, which has become a major complication for the college football postseason. Each of the past two years, two of the four first-round games have gone up against NFL matchups; they have drawn substantially fewer viewers. If the playoff were to add another round, it would either have to play on weekdays or risk some of its most valuable games against the most powerful league in sports.

• The Alabama Crimson Tide has announced contract extensions for both Alabama Football Coach Kalen DeBoer and Alabama Basketball Coach Nate Oats.

• For DeBoer: A contract that pays $12.5 Million annually and a buyout of 90% the remaining value of the contract. The buyout if DeBoer leaves for another job starts at $10 Million and decreases annually by $2 Million. The extension is a two year extrication, taking the contract through January 31, 2033.

• For Nate Oats: A $1.2 Million raise to $7.2 Million per season. The buyout if Oats chooses to leave has been raised back to $15 Million and decreases over the course of the contract which runs through 2032.
