When Deeanna Erickson boarded a bus in Calgary on the night of June 6, 2025, something went wrong.

Surveillance footage shows the 31 year old visibly distressed, crying and rocking back and forth, before suddenly stepping off in the Walden area, more than 10 kilometres from her home.

She hasn’t been seen since.

This week on The Canadian Gothic, we’re revisiting a case that continues to unfold in the headlines.

Due to travel, we’re taking a short break from new releases, but rather than leave you without an episode, we’re bringing back our coverage of the murder of Paul Schmidt, a shocking and deeply disturbing act of violence that unfolded in downtown Vancouver on March 26, 2023.

In broad daylight, outside a busy Starbucks, Paul was attacked and killed following a brief confrontation while standing with his young daughter. The incident, which was partially captured on video and widely shared online, left a lasting impact on the public and raised difficult questions about violence, bystander behavior, and the justice system.

At the time of this original episode, many details were still emerging. Now, as the trial of the accused continues to work its way through the courts, this case is once again in the spotlight.

This rerelease offers an opportunity to revisit what happened that day, and to better understand the events at the center of a case that is still unfolding.

In May of 1975, a high school in Brampton, Ontario became the scene of Canada's first modern mass school shooting.

Sixteen-year-old Michael Slobodian walked into Brampton Centennial Secondary School carrying two rifles in a guitar case and, within minutes, left two people dead, thirteen wounded, and an entire generation traumatized.

In this episode of the Canadian Gothic we trace the events leading up to the attack, the moments of terror inside the school, and the survivor stories that have echoed through the decades.

This is the forgotten Canadian tragedy that unfolded long before Columbine, a chilling reminder that the roots of modern day school gun violence reach further back, and closer to home, than most realize.

In July 1996, Blair Adams left his home in Surrey, British Columbia, convinced someone was trying to kill him. Over the course of just a few days, he emptied his savings and safety deposit box, attempted to cross the U.S. border multiple times, and made a frantic, illogical journey that ultimately led him to Knoxville, Tennessee — a city where he had no known ties.

There, his body was discovered in a construction site parking lot under bizarre circumstances: his pants had been forcibly removed, his socks were turned inside out, and thousands of dollars in cash, gold bars, and jewelry were scattered around him, untouched.

Officially ruled an accident, the case was quickly closed by authorities who concluded the boys had chosen to sleep on the tracks.

We are joined by Ken Jessome, a childhood friend of Kenny and David, who has spent the last several years reigniting interest in the case through a series of articles in his community newspaper. In 1962, 23-year-old Alexandra Wiwcharuk—a vibrant nurse, beauty queen, and beloved daughter—went for a walk along the South Saskatchewan River in Saskatoon and never came home. Her body was discovered weeks later, buried in a shallow grave not far from her home. She had been brutally assaulted and buried alive.

In this episode of Nighttime, we revisit Alexandra Wiwcharuk’s haunting case with acclaimed author Sharon Butala, whose book The Girl in Saskatoon explores Alexandra’s life, her death, and the deep scars left in its wake. Butala, as a former classmate of Alexandra, brings a unique and intimate lens to this decades-old mystery.

Saskatchewan farmer named Edwin Fuhr claimed to have witnessed something extraordinary—five metallic, saucer-shaped objects hovering over his field. 22 year old Lyndon Fuller appeared to have everything going for him. Employed, active in his community, and an all around good guy. But in late 1988 it became clear that Lyndon was struggling beneath the surface.

On April 26th, 1988, a man was shot and killed in a remote cabin deep in rural Ontario—a single act of violence that raised more questions than answers.

Four witnesses were in the cabin that night, but their stories didn’t add up. They contradicted each other, and as the investigation continued, they even contradicted themselves. At the center of this confusing and unsettling case was Mae McEachern, a woman who would ultimately be charged with murder.

19 year old Gursimran Kaur and her mother worked together at a Halifax Walmart. During their evening shift on Oct 19th, Gursimran’s mother grew increasingly worried after not seeing her daughter for over an hour. She searched the store, asking coworkers for help. Taylor Samson, a local university student, tells his girlfriend he has to run out for a moment and that he wouldn’t be long. When she see’s him exiting the apartment carrying a large duffel bag, she assumes it contains marijuana.

When he fails to return home that night.. or ever again, she, and many others in Taylor’s life, begin to suspect he was the victim in a drug deal gone very wrong.

What will start as a missing persons investigation will become one of Nova Scotia’s highest profile murder trials. One that sees two students of Halifax’s Dalhousie University at center stage.

The Victim, Taylor Samson and the accused William Sandeson who at the time of Taylor’s murder was only days away from beginning classes at the prominent medical school.

In part one and two, Kayla and I made a point to discuss the character of Taylor Samson, and the role he played in the lives of many who stand heartbroken on the sidelines of this case. But, two people removed from the story can only take that so far.

For part three, I wanted to place a cap stone on this series, something that brings the events surrounding Taylor's death into the right context... that being the senseless murder of a human being loved by many as a son, a friend, a student, an entrepreneur, and much more.
