The Best (and worst) of Boxing in 2023

2023 was another eventful year in boxing and this final episode brings together some of the big stories and interviews featured on the pod. Anthony Joshua was in reflective mood when discussing the final stage of his career, Victor Conte pulled no punches at all in challenging boxing's dopers and cheaters while Timothy Bradley gave a riveting insight into his punishing fight with Ruslan Provodnikov.

The boxing year started with Liam Smith stunning Chris Eubank Jnr, a result and performance upstaged only by the surprising efforts of Francis Ngannou against Tyson Fury later in the year. Matt Christie's reaction to that is worth another listen.

The year closed with the heavyweights taking centre stage on an extravagant bill in Saudi where Joe Parker got the career win he craved, Daniel Dubois earned the redemption he needed and Anthony Joshua produced the spectacular finish he most wanted.

ON a dramatic night in Saudi Arabia, Anthony Joshua looked terrific while stopping Otto Wallin, Joseph Parker outhustled a listless Deontay Wilder and Daniel Dubois thumped Jarrell Miller into submission.

Joshua’s partnership with Ben Davison got off to a flying start but the matchup with Wilder - who barely landed a single blow - could now be gone forever. We closely examine the performance of Dubois, too.

There was another upset, crafted by Agit Kabayel alongside more predictable wins for Dmitry Bivol, Filip Hrgovic and Jai Opetaia.

Will Chris Eubank Jr fight Conor Benn?

Oleksandr Usyk can upset Anthony Joshua/Olympic preview

THE excellent heavyweight matchup between Anthony Joshua and Oleksandr Usyk was officially announced this week.

Okay, it’s not Tyson Fury-Joshua but, as consolation prizes go, this is a terrific fight in the heavyweight division. And a very risky one for Joshua, as Matt Christie and Alex Steedman explain.

The Tokyo Olympics is set to start and the boxing tournament promises to be fascinating. The country’s leading authority on amateur boxing, Boxing News’ own John Dennen, is on hand to provide an in-depth preview.

The brilliant contest between Jermell Charlo and Brian Castano is reflected upon and the clash featuring Joe Joyce and Carlos Takam looked forward to.

Debating whether the current boxing scoring system needs to change

REACTION: A terrible night for Josh Warrington and the British officials

IN this special reaction podcast, Alex Steedman and Matt Christie attempt to break down an eventful night at Wembley that saw Josh Warrington lose to Mauricio Lara in a beyond brutal upset and the judges - again - steal the headlines for some contentious scoring on the undercard.

Warrington was eventually stopped in the ninth round but arguments that the bout should have been halted as early as the fourth carry significant weight.

In chief-support, eyes rolled as Zelfa Barrett was named the victor over a sprightly Kiko Martinez. The Briton may have done enough to win, but the cards, namely two that read 118-111 in his favour, were not in keeping with the fight witnessed by the vast majority of observers.
