The British Speedway season is almost back, and after a long winter the first official action of 2026 takes place at King's Lynn's Adrian Flux Arena on March 15th. Nicolai Klindt marks his testimonial year with a huge event in Norfolk to officially raise the curtain on British Speedway's season, and has assembled a tremendous line up including 4 current Speedway GP stars in a 4 team tournament, which also brings 2 great team names back to the tapes for the first time in years. RORY SCHLEIN: Aussie World Cup Medalist to British Champion 👀

Rory Schlein is a modern day British Speedway legend, who despite retiring a few years back, came back for more!

Now having finally hung his kevlars for goodie looks back on a career which has taken in most of British Speedway's top side, including winning 3 Elite League titles with Coventry, including a treble in 2007, And 2nd tier titles with Edinburgh and Poole Pirates.

Celina Liebmann

Celina Liebmann is a trail blazer in speedway, becoming the first female rider to race in an FIM World Speedway Championship event competing in SGP2 in 2022. And in 2024 she will become the first female rider to race in a professional British league when she joins the Workington Comets on the Cab Direct Championship.

With speedway being a male dominated world, she's had no shortage of advice from online experts, but as you'll hear, she doesn't care what anyone thinks.

Celina has been riding a speedway bike for 18 of her 23 years, and comes from a family of motorcycle racers. Her dad was a top German Ice Speedway rider, and her mum competed in Moto X, and so in her words "we know how to ride a bike".

In addition to British league racing she will also have the chance to face some of the finest riders in world speedway in the season opening Peter Craven Memorial meeting in Manchester UK, at the National Speedway Stadium.

Kyle Howarth - Sheffield Tigers Captain

Kyle Howarth captained the Sheffield Tigers to their first top flight championship in 2023, and in 2024 celebrates his testimonial at Owlerton with some of the sports top stars racing against the Sheffield 24 line up. He'll also race for Scunthorpe in the Championship too where he starts as the Scorpions number 1.

In this podcast we get to know Kyle a little better, how he found his way into the sport and his personal highlights.

Born in Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater Manchester, Howarth competed in grasstrack and motocross before starting his speedway career in 2008 in amateur competitions, gaining a National League place with Scunthorpe Saints in 2009, scoring 13+2 on his debut.[3] He averaged 4.62 over the season and finished as runner up in the British Under-15 championship that year.[3] In 2010, he became a Poole Pirates asset and rode for Bournemouth Buccaneers in the National League, averaging 7.43, and also made guest appearances in the Premier League for Somerset Rebels.[3] Also in 2010, he finished in third place in the British Under-18 Championship.[3] In 2011 he rode in the National League for Belle Vue Colts, and he also rode for Edinburgh Monarchs in the Premier League, averaging 5.11, and was named at number eight for the Belle Vue Aces Elite League team.[3] He spent the winter riding in Australia, and won the Queensland Under-21 Championship.[4]

In 2012, after initially signing for King's Lynn Stars, he rode for Poole in the Elite League and Workington Cometsin the Premier League, and signed for both teams in 2013.[5][6][7][8] He finished in third place in the 2012 British Under-21 Championship and represented Great Britain at under-21 level.[9]

From 2013 until 2020 he rode for numerous clubs including Swindon Robins, Workington, Poole Pirates and Coventry Bees. He joined Sheffield Tigers and Wolverhampton Wolves in 2016, staying with both clubs until 2020. As a Sheffield rider he won the SGB Championship Pairs, partnering Lasse Bjerre, during the SGB Championship 2017 season.[10] and then the following season won it again partnering Charles Wright, during the SGB Championship 2018 season.[11]

In 2021 and 2022, he returned to Sheffield in the SGB Premiership 2021 and SGB Premiership 2022 and signed for the Leicester Lions in the SGB Championship 2021 and SGB Championship 2022.[12] He helped Sheffield win the 2022 League cup and reach the Play off final.[13]

In 2023, he re-signed for Sheffield for the SGB Premiership 2023 [14] and won the league title with the club.[15]He also signed for Plymouth Gladiators for the SGB Championship 2023.[16] In 2024, he re-signed for Sheffield[17] and re-signed for Scunthorpe (his first club) for the 2024 Championship season

Charles Wright

Charles Wright is a former British Champion, and has won league titles at both professional levels of British Speedway, and 2024 marks his testimonial year in the sport!

Of course his brother has been a top level rider too, but both are very much following in their grandfather's footsteps, Jim Yacoby was a rider with Belle Vue Aces in the 1960's and that's where the family routes in the sport lay. We'll hear how it hasn't always been easy for Charles who despite finding himself without a team at times in his early career, has battled to the top of domestic speedway in Britain.

2023 also saw a dramatic end to his season, after he was selected to race for Wroclaw in the Ekstraliga final, but after a good start to the night it ended with a high speed season ending crash!

Hans Nielsen - 4x World Champion

Hans Nielsen has been recognised by the FIM as an icon for very good reason..! In his career he won 22 World Championship medals in all competitions, including 4 individual World titles. It could however have been so many more were is not for the fickle finger of fate, as he claimed many more silver medals, missing the top step by the smallest of margins.

We discuss Hans' stellar career which saw him dominate British speedway through the 80's and 90's, in fact we was the top averaged rider from 1983 to 1990, NO rider delivered more.

We also look at what is next for Hans, having stepped down from Danish national management and heading to Polish league management!

Craig Ackroyd

Craig Ackroyd is one of the World's top speedway referees, and one of the few on the Grand Prix circuit in addition to officiating across British Speedway's leagues.

Craig himself had ambitions of being a speedway rider, and was involved in Grasstrack alongside the likes of Carl Stonehewer and Garry Stead. However he eventually followed in his Dad's footsteps and entered the referee's box and hasn't looked back since.

He has taken charge of some of World speedway's biggest clashes, including the Speedway World Cup and title deciding Grand Prix rounds.

Alun Rossiter

Alun Rossiter is in a very select group of people in British Speedway, as one of the few to have won a top level league title as both a rider and manager. On the bike Rosco represented his home town club Swindon Robins through the 80s, with a spell at Coventry Bees in between, along with spells at Exeter, Weymouth, Wolves King's Lynn and Peterborough among a few. His most success as a rider came at Poole Pirates where he won 3 league titles and 2 cups, and remains among the club's all time top 50 points scorers.

As a manager he took the helm of Swindon to begin with, but it was Coventry where he secured his first title in 2010, in that epic comeback at Wimbourne Road as Chris Harris picked himself up from the deck and dragged the Bees over the line. Rosco also claimed 3 further titles with Swindon, the most recent in 2019 which became the clubs final year.

Alun talks about his journey from young fan to club legend, and he talks us through how his own dream speedway meeting would look including his all time 1-7 team.

Danny King

Danny King has had a career spanning over 20 years, including becoming British Champion in 2016, beating Bartosz Zmarzlik in a GP, and representing GB in a World Cup.

Steve Worrall

Steve Worrall rides for Wolverhampton Wolves in the British Speedway Premiership, and is the 2023 captain of reigning champions the Poole Pirates in the Championship.

2023 sees Steve celebrate his testimonial year, with a early season Champion of Champions meeting at Poole Stadium where the Championship title holders Poole face a Belle Vue Aces side featuring 5 of the 2022 Premiership winning team.

Steve of course has ridden for both teams, 7 seasons with the Aces including the last year at the old Kirkmanshulme lane, and the first year at the National Speedway Stadium. He's also won a league and cup treble with Edinburgh Monarchs in 2014, back to back league and cup doubles with the Pirates, as well as time at Swindon Robins, Newcastle Diamonds, and Scunthorpe Scorpions.

Steve along with his twin brother Richie started out in motocross, and a passive interest in watching speedway on TV or the occasional GP ended with him giving it a try at Scunthorpe and the rest is history..!

Since then he's also represented Great Britain at the Speedway World Cup, and narrowly missed out on claiming a British Championship title in 2017.

Steve tells us more about all of that and much more, plus of course letting us in on his dream 1-7 lineup, and other things which would feature in his dream speedway meeting..!

Paul Bowen

Dave Rowe

Dave Rowe is one of the voices of Eurosport's speedway TV coverage working as a reporter on the British Premiership matches, and as commentator for the SEC series. You might also know him as a voice on Talksport as a voice of their football coverage during the season.

He's also a journalist for the Speedway Star, head of the British Speedway official press office and a stadium announcer at for Birmingham Brummies. In fact in 2022 Dave was present at 88 different speedway meetings across the UK & Europe, and that's before the other matches he saw on TV.

In his spare time, Dave is part of the campaign group aiming to save speedway at Coventry's Brandon Stadium. A 6 year fight against developers looking to turn one of speedway's historic venues into a housing estate. They received a major boost to their dream of seeing speedway return to Brandon, and we discuss the scale of the task up to now.

Adam Roynon

Adam Roynon has ridden some some of the biggest clubs in British Speedway over his 20 year career, including the Coventry Bees, Sheffield Tigers, Workington Comets and Rye House Rockets to name a few.

A hugely popular and talented rider, he won the Premier League title with Rye House in 2007 racing as a young reserve alongside Tai Woffinden. He got to race alongside his idol Gary Havelock with Redcar, and won the Premiership Pairs title in Somerset with Workington.

He has however suffered some devastating injuries some of which included a broken neck and took him to the brink of losing his life, but amazed doctors by not only making a recovery but also getting back on a bike to still be racing today..!

In 2022 he took to the mic as a commentator with BSN winning over a new following as he brought his wealth of knowledge and experience in speedway to a new audience.

Peter Collins - Keeping It On The Tyres

Peter Collins MBE is without doubt one of the most successful British riders of all time, and a Belle Vue Aces legend. He's finally put together his autobiography called Keeping It On The Tyres, and recently at his book launch at Longsight Sports on Social Club on Kirkmanshulme Lane, I managed to get some time with him beside his world title winning bike..!

His book is over 500 pages and documents everything you could ever want to know, and you can get hold of it at retro-speedway.com

An overnight sensation when he burst onto the Cheshire grasstrack scene as a 16-year-old, Mancunian PC quickly shot to speedway fame, too, as a Rochdale rookie in the early 70s and became the most famous graduate of the Belle Vue training school.

His 16 loyal seasons with Belle Vue – the local club he supported from the age of eight when he dreamed of emulating his boyhood hero Peter Craven – brought him the highest league and cup honours and, thanks to his trademark thrilling bursts from the back, a permanent place among the pantheon of Aces and England greats.

He was beyond compare, the supreme racer who took the breath away, admired by fans and TV audiences worldwide. No other rider in the history of speedway has dominated the front and back pages of top-selling English tabloid newspapers as Peter did the day after his biggest triumph in front of a capacity 120,000 crowd at Katowice, Poland in 1976.

Stuart Robson

Stuart Robson hails from a real speedway family, his dad being a rider in the 70s and his brother also taking up the sport, it is perhaps little surprise that Stuart followed in their footsteps.

Growing up in Sunderland, his first experience of racing was via the grass track scene, but later moving into speedway with Newcastle Diamonds, and then later the Coventry Bees. Indeed Stuart spent multiple seasons and eras at those 2 clubs in particular, but also with spells at Middlesborugh, Hull, Rye House, Lakeside and latterly Redcar.

Katie Gordon

Neil Vatcher - GB Under 21 Manager

Josh Auty

Josh Auty raises the curtain on the British Speedway season in 2022 with his testimonial meeting on March the 19th at Scunthorpe.

In his career he has raced for some of British Speedway's best knows teams including Coventry Bees, Sheffield Tigers, Leicester Lions, and Birmingham Brummies, whom he returns to this year.

He's best known for racing with Scunthorpe Scorpions who he spend 9 seasons with, and before that learned his speedway craft there as a youngster.

Paul Ackroyd

In this episode we speak with one of the longest serving referees in British Speedway, and Chairman of the Speedway Riders Benevolent Fund, Paul Ackroyd.

Paul began as a fan, but eventually found his way into the referee's box, where he enjoyed a career spanning 28 years, and in the time from the early 80's to the noughties he's ruled over pretty much every name you can think of in that era. He's also taken charge of some of the biggest fixtures in British Speedway including 3 British Finals and some international test matches.

He's now the chairman on the World's only charity dedicated to helping injured speedway riders, The Speedway Ben Fund. British Speedway is the only league in the world to be able to offer help to rider injured in professional competition, and the support is crucial to those who find themselves injured.

The Ben Fund Bonanza meeting is back on the calendar for March 27th at Peterborough, and in this episode we find out more about the meeting, and reveal some more names joining the line up..!

Tom Brennan - Speedway of Nations World Champion!

Tom Brennan is the 2021 British Under 21 Champion, and a WORLD CHAMPION as part of the GB team which claimed gold in the 2021 Speedway of Nations in Manchester, ending a 32 year wait for a British team world title.

He also races in the Premiership for the Belle Vue Aces, and in the Championship for Glasgow Tigers, and he reveals some of the reasons why he's chosen to be a part of those clubs. Adam Ellis - 2021 British Speedway Champion

Adam Ellis realised a dream in 2021 becoming the British Speedway Champion, and adding his name to a trophy adorned with the greats of the sport. But whilst he hails from a British family he grew up in France and developed his skills on the French grasstrack circuit.

He has risen through the British youth system though, going from the British Youth Championships, to the National League, Championship League, and already being a double Premiership title winner with Swindon.

He's also part of the GB Speedway Team, and in this episode he shares some of his aims for 2022 and beyond..!

Phil Lanning

Phil Lanning is a multi award winning journalist and sports publicist, during his career he has written for The Sun newspaper for over 25 years, as well as writing leading articles for the Speedway Star, and working directly alongside names such as Tai Woffinden, Jason Crump and Gary Havelock in managing their PR and publicity coverage.

He’s also the youngest son of legendary commentator Dave Lanning, the voice the vast majority of speedway fans will have grown up with, and so it’s little surprise that Phil continues his dad’s work reporting on and promoting the sports of Speedway and Darts.

We’ll get to know a little more about what it was like growing up in a family so dedicated to speedway and surrounded by well known names. From watching racing on Neil Middleditch’s shoulders to Bruce Penhall lending his jacket.

We’ll also look at how tough it is for speedway to make an impression in the national press, and how today’s young riders can make themselves stars.

David Howe

David Howe has ridden for many of British Speedway's best knows clubs, along some some of the best known names of the era.
He's a former British Under 21 champion, Elite League Winner, and has appeared in world speedway's showpiece event the Speedway GP in Cardiff, including in 2007, the last time a Brit won the fixture.
Since finishing his racing career he know works as a speedway mechanic and currently works with Wolves and Leicester's Ryan Douglas, and he explains some of the work required between meeting to make sure the bikes are ready to go.
David also chooses his dream meeting in Speedway Paradise too, although, controversially doubling up may be required..!

Chris Louis

My guest in this episode is Chris Louis. As the son of one of the best known riders of the 1970s, former British Champion and World number 3 John Tiger Louis, the sport was always going to be in his blood.

And Chris very much followed in his dad’s footsteps by himself becoming British Champion and reaching number 3 in the world.

He was also captain of what many believe to be British Speedway best ever team, Ipswich side of 1998. A team which featured Tomaz Gollob and world champion of that year Tony Rickardsson. They went on to claim an unprecedented league and cup treble.

He rode in the Speedway Grand Prix series from its early days including being part of the very first Cardiff GP.

Since his riding days his involvement with the Witches has continued as team manager, and now co-promotor of the team.

Chris is also now at the top table of the sport in the UK as a director of British Speedway Promoters Ltd.

Aidan Collins - Ride & Skid It

Aidan Collins was born into speedway, it's hard not to be when you're the son of British Speedway legend Les Collins. Following a speedway a flat track career of his own, Aidan now gives fans a motorcycle enthusiasts the chance to ride speedway. Joining him at the Buxton Circuit are his dad Les, the former world number 2, and another ex rider Adam Allott, who also has strong family connections to the sport. Also on hand on the day was ex 2 x British Champion & U21 World Champion Joe Screen.

Dennis McCleary

You could call him Mr Berwick, but Dennis McCleary has dedicated over 50 years to helping run Berwick Bandits, beginning in 1969 and still going. He started as announcer and his voice is still keeping the Shielfield crowds informed in 2021, he’s also been programme editor, co promoter, team manager, time keeper, in fact most jobs other than actually riding the bikes..!

During that time hundreds of riders have come and gone, countless managers, and numerous promoters, but Dennis has been a constant rock who has witnessed the entire journey..

In addition during the 1970’s he became a qualified referee and ruled over some of speedway’s biggest names of the era.

In 2012 he became a co promoter and helped bring some of speedway’s stars of the modern era to his corner of Northumberland when the track became licensed for FIM events.

And in 2012 he was invited to be the official timekeeper at the British Speedway GP in Cardiff,

Chris Morton - Belle Vue Aces Legend

Chris Morton MBE is a true speedway legend, with a racing career spanning the decades the majority of which wearing the iconic Belle Vue Aces race jacket. He appeared in 7 World Finals, won the World Pairs title alongside his great friend Peter Collins, and was British Champion in 1983.

In this episode take a journey through his illustrious career from the very beginnings learning his craft at Peter Collins' parents farm, through to beating the best of all time in front of a packed Wembley stadium.

Chris's other legacy is in the form of the National Speedway Stadium in Manchester, and a new home for his beloved Aces. Discover how this dream was born the very moment Hyde Road closed down in 1987 and despite many battles and obstacles, almost 30 years later it became a reality.

Roy Clarke is a well known voice at speedway tracks in the North East as centregreen host at Redcar and Newcastle. But did you know he used to be a rider, a much sought after speedway mechanic and someone who shared their house with various riders from overseas too?
This episode also takes a close look at mental health in speedway, particularly from a rider point of view. Roy suffered himself overcoming mental obstacles when he got on a bike, and the pressures riders are under to perform is discussed. It’s a subject very close to Roy’s heart, he was already a campaigner for better help for speedway riders before the death of friend Danny Ayers.

Over more than 20 years Shane became a legend with a number of clubs including Ipswich, Kings Lynn, Glasgow, Peterborough, before ending his career at Sheffield. Hear the amazing story of how Shane discovered his biological father, and how his wife and daughter saved his life last year after a suffering a cardiac arrest.

Peter Oakes - Writer, Promoter, and manager of Ivan Mauger

Jeff Scott - Speedway Author

Around 15 years ago author Jeff Scott set himself the challenge of visiting every single speedway track in the UK through one season travelling over 10,000 miles and taking in over 1000 heats and documented the tale in his book Showered in Shale.

Since then he’s made a similar journey following the Speedway GP across europe, again documenting his trips in the book Hitchhikers Guide To The Speedway GP, as well as many other books looking at the history and people in speedway.
