<title>Dads In Lockdown - Paul McIntosh - using ACT psychology to negotiate with kids</title>
<description>Derek had a great chat with Paul on his approach and techniques when dealing with his kids.
Paul runs Derek through one example of how the family came to a rational agreement on the best way to handle the screen time issue using an ACT matrix.
Armed with a piece of paper, a pen and some post-it notes, Paul managed to come to a calm agreement on sensible screen use.
Next episode Paul will be running Derek and his 12 YO son through a similar position, but not something as serious and volatile as screen time. They will probably tackle Derek's desire to teach Tom the skills of his trade and use resources at hand to give him a great head start in the modern world of streaming and content creation.

<title>Dads In Lockdown - Hotel Quarantine With Adam White</title>
      <link>https://hangontoyourhat.simplecast.com/episodes/dads-in-lockdown-hotel-quarantine-with-adam-white-IkGK7DqJ</link>
<description>We had a great chat with Adam White from a Sydney Quarantine Hotel Room.
Adam knew what was coming when he applied for special permission to visit his gravely ill mother in the UK. what he did not know was that Victoria would have an outbreak, leaving him locked in a hotel room in Sydney while his family were locked down in a Melbourne suburb.
Adam shared what the quarantine process is like, dealing with the loss of his mum in the UK, and what the future looks like for his kids.
Thanks mate for sharing and helping us all get a better understanding of what is happening all around us.

The death of a child: our greatest fear.
A culture that doesn't deal with death.
Kids can cope with reality better than we can.
Tragedy brings us into the moment- thinking with your body not your head.
Remembrance.
Remember what is really important- holding onto the perspective that comes from loss and grief.
Parenthood increases the spectrum range of emotions.
It's okay to keep the dead alive inside the family narrative and mythology.
When do you tell people about the death of a child- it can be hard for people to know what to do.
Learning from the dying.
Trauma and grief are different, though they often occur together.
The digital legacy we leave.
Year nine. Whooah!
Giving friends at school the space to deal with the death of a friend.
Getting down to a child's level can de-escalate a difficult situation.
Forget time quality time- just being around is what matters.

Swearing- what happens if you're not prepared to stop.
Parenting in a digital world.
Positive screen time.

      <link>https://hangontoyourhat.simplecast.com/episodes/warwick-UJ3JUxvP</link>
<description>Warwick is a Cinematographer who has filmed, amongst other things, many of Missy Higgins film clips. His erratic and demanding work life has made it hard for him to see his boys as much as he wanted to while they were growing up. We discuss how he managed to have a successful relationship with them.

Topics:
Grown up kids.
Working in the film industry makes family life almost impossible.
Guilt- Missing so much of early life with the kids because of work.
There is no such thing as no on a film set.
Anecdotes from the set.
Making Missy Higgins film clips for "Everyone's waiting" and "Unashamed Desire".
Quality time.
Teenage disinterest.
It's all over before you know it.
Are boys and girls different- apart from the obvious?
When the kids team up against you.
Kids are resilient when they know they are loved.
Not the person you were when you had kids: changing ethics.
Relationships based on shared values.
People don't change unless the pain is bad enough.
Climate change and cognitive dissonance.
How do you talk to kids about climate change?
Fixing the world- there, done!

<description>Anthony is an extraordinary painter, performer, cancer survivor and father. His work is intense and exciting and his life story is the same. From international artist to Leukemia survivor, Anthony had great success in the art world before he was crippled by GVH disease as a result of a bone marrow transplant. His son moved over-seas to live with his mother while Anthony tried to stay alive.

Topics discussed:
The physicality of painters.
Writing and painting- comparing our process.
When Anthony filled the Myers windows with paintings in a week.
International success and a high intensity lifestyle and work life.
Killing your darlings- process above product.
The cancer rollercoaster begins.
An unexpected child, brings unwanted vulnerability.
The Breslin Gallery.
A second chance and facing the fear.
Death is as big as life and as important.
Transcendence.
Being a father when you are fighting cancer.
Forced to practice what you believe.
The judgemental switch gets turned off.
From athlete to invalid.
Being ready to go.
Finding meaning and relief from self through service and charity work.
The individual is an illusion- They're me and I'm them.

<title>Uncle Jack Charles- National Treasure, Respected Elder, Grandfather Of Aboriginal Theatre, Father To All Who Need Him.</title>
      <link>https://hangontoyourhat.simplecast.com/episodes/uncle-jack-charles-aboriginal-elder-father-figure-to-many-GTigP5YA</link>
<description>Uncle Jack isn't a Dad in the usual sense but he's certainly the grandfather of Aboriginal theatre and a spiritual father to many indigenous and non-indigenous people alike. Uncle Jack is an Australian icon and a truly beautiful man- look him up, watch his movies and TV (especially the documentary "Bastardy"), read his Autobiography (Born again black Fella) say hello to him in the street. He really is a father to all those who need him. Donate to the Archie Roach Foundation if you'd like to support the incredible and vital work that Uncle Jack and Uncle Archie are doing.

In Indigenous societies everyone brings up the children-

The men are missing or behaving badly.
Jack's time in the Box Hill boy's home.
Jack's family origins- the extraordinary, still unfolding epic, that is the life of Jack Charles.
A little on theatre History in Australia.
The national Black theatre, Bob Maza and Gary Foley.
Jack plays Bennelong naked at the Sydney Opera House with David Gulpilil.
Initiation late in life can be confronting.
Young men going through lore gives them responsibility and accountability.

<title>Jayden Sheridan - Founder Of Yeah Gnar Skate Brand, Father At 17</title>
      <link>https://hangontoyourhat.simplecast.com/episodes/jayden-sheridan-yeah-gnar-skate-brand-CQqES06n</link>
<description>Since becoming a father at seventeen in a country town troubled by drug addiction and bored teenagers, Jayden's love for his son and strong desire to give him the best possible life have driven him to work hard, start a skate brand, save money and stay sober. This conversation is a wake up call to all the dads and a lesson in goal setting and sacrifice.
Jayden lives in a van. That is cool in the skate world and is a decision he has made to help save money for his long term plan - return to Seymour, where Jayden's son lives with his mother and setup a business. He already has a successful skate brand 'Yeah Gnar' and is developing some top secret prototype inventions.
Of course, weekend dad time is awesome cos dad already lives in a camper. The fellas adventure and go out bush away from the digital nasties most weekends, giving the lad the analogue time we all dream of giving our kids.

Dan didn't make it in person this episode due to a sick kid but we got a phone in with him which was cool.

<title>Greg Quicke: Astronomer, Motorcycle Mystic, Father.</title>
      <link>https://hangontoyourhat.simplecast.com/episodes/space-gandalf-H2t6urQl</link>
<description>Quickie is a bush astronomer to some, a motorcycle riding mystic, a pearl diver and a father to his daughter as well as being a kind of community father to many others, including my kids. When he's on the telly with Professor Brian Cox he's known as Space Gandalf on account of the big white beard and long white hair. He runs amazing Astro tours out of Broome, Western Australia.

Topics discussed
A brief history of Quickie- Astronomy in the bush and working with Professor Brian Cox on the tellie.
Walking the country with Paddy Roe and the Goolarabooloo- the country knows what's in your heart.
Quickie talks about his daughter.
Mothers are amazing.
The cycles of the planets and the possible effects on our lives- a bit of astrology to think about.
Quickie really explains the sky very well- makes astronomy accessible.
Literally watching Saturn return.
Full moon is a time of high energy.
Unbroken connection to a water hole for 40,000 years.
Fighting for your right to be a father- Quickie had to let go of his daughter for a while after coming up against the wall of the family court.
Kids take you back to your own father.
The old discipline and boundary-setting debate.

Quickie and I sit in the sand dunes at Cable Beach at 6am talking about breathing.
The many fathers it takes to raise a child- community fathers.
The Day Quickie and Sammy had a run in and the respect that followed.
Kids hear everything- Sammy tells his kinder about blue mushrooms.
Quickie talks about Pearl diving in Broome in the 1980's.
Breathing water is so easy but it will usually kill you.
Embracing the challenges- "Relax- you're not in charge anyway"
When someone saves your life in an instant without thinking about it.
The kids weren't sent to destroy you.
Back to the extended family of our community.
Further conversation about Sammy and his many fathers.
Risk and reward.
Don't hold your breath when you're under pressure.
When you get to the end of your tether.

      <link>https://hangontoyourhat.simplecast.com/episodes/mark-jones-dad-of-the-kimberley-YgwoTS5G</link>
<description>Mark Jones: documentarian, storyteller, spiritual adventurer and father of two.
Mark made 17 adventure documentaries with the legendary Malcolm Douglas and subsequently managed his crocodile park. He is a historian, storyteller and an adventurer with a deep fascination and appreciation for Rock art and Aboriginal culture. This is a conversation of epic scope.

Topics discussed.
Crabbing in the Mangroves and discussing the epic of Gilgamesh.
Straight into everything- storytelling and history.
Linguistics, Aboriginal story tradition, the Kimberley.
Malcom Douglas documentary making. Managing the crocodile park.
Falling in love with the camera, the Kimberley and rock art.
Fear of the future now that I have children- everything that humans create eventually collapses.
More Gilgamesh- the end of human immortality.

Mark's fatherhood journey told. Meeting his wife over a fish gutting table.
Even the most serine parents will be pushed to their limits some time.
Aboriginal people in the Kimberley call their children mother and father.
How do we nurture resilience in our children?
Being a father is a healing process.
When your parents didn't cope very well and the effect that has on you as a parent.
Call your son Dad.
Kids have Epochs.
Without our wives we are doomed.
Politics should be dominated by women.
Misogyny.
Sleep is everything.
A meeting with a great white shark- that's not a euphemism.
Meaning and connection in order to parent well.
"What's it all about?"- A billionaire asks an Aboriginal man sitting on a mat.
We are living in an unsatisfying story.
Spend time with the dying.
Children are better with death than adults.
Resilience by facing realities of life.
Your soul kept moving and the fear didn't exist.
To give birth to the ancients in a new time is creation. Jung.
Universal Lore.
Decide what you question is?
Toddlers are c@$!s. Sometimes.
Avoiding the violent upbringing that we may have had.
Entitled, thin skinned and narcissistic.
Strong fathers as a stand in for the world.
Accept that your kids won't like you sometimes.
Men and boys- clear measured guidance.
Girls need good fathers too.
Letting go of the voices in your head.

Reducing to the absolute basics can actually reduce anxiety.
Music residency at cape Levique while home schooling the kids.
Recording studio in a shipping container.
Making time for your relationship.
Making time for yourself.
Telling and retelling your relationship narrative.
We are a storytelling species.
Losing the skill of being a good audience.
Transitioning from the road to the water- Trading the truck tray for the Catamaran.
Veggie oil to wind power.
Anything is possible in Broome- this place is an amplifier.
Alcoholics go Geograhicals- changing location but not stopping drinking and expecting things to be different.
The healing power of community.
Broome is magic. The country listens and knows your intensions.

<title>Richard Bradley - Base Jumping, Global Adventure And Kids</title>
      <link>https://hangontoyourhat.simplecast.com/episodes/richard-bradley-base-jumping-global-adventure-and-kids-JIglcjHP</link>
<description>Richard grew up on a cattle station in the Kimberley, his adventures around the world are Hemmingway-esque to say the least. I met him when he was single and childless as was I at the time, now everything has changed and his kids are his greatest adventure.

Topics discussed.
A disaster at the bottom of the ocean- Richards near death experience while saturation diving.
Hydraulic chainsaws in Louisiana swamps while avoiding crocodiles.
Dangerous behaviours and being a father- an obligation to stay alive.
Hitting the restart button marked family.
A life in four acts and parenting consciously.
Kids learn most by modelling- by watching the behaviour of their parents.
Kids show you where your mental health issues are.
This podcast is for my mental health.
Men need to talk to men and boys need mentors.
Broome is a diving bell in the desert- the annual reckoning of the wet season.
Oxytocin- the strongest drug known to man.
Staying focused on the relationship that caused the children- love takes work.
Active problem solving and resilience.
Just by showing up and giving a shit, you're already ahead.
It's hard to be rational when you're not getting good sleep.
The tests of a super defiant child. Boundaries.
Letting them have the tantrum and not taking it personally.
Is psychological warfare worse than a smack?
Drowning in love and attention- are we making little narcissists.
Keep the tech to a minimum and working hard to achieve something.
The smart phone has made us dumb.

Chris is a father of three, Grandfather of five, a GP, Head Doctor at the Asylum Seekers Resource Centre and Dan's father in law. <title>Sean M Whelan. Poet, Son And Sperm Donor</title>
      <link>https://hangontoyourhat.simplecast.com/episodes/3-5040bbe5</link>
<description>This week we talk with Poet, Civil Celebrant and podcaster, Sean Whelan about the early death of his father and learn about what it means to be a sperm donor.
We discuss how expectations have changed since our fathers' generation, tell some anecdotes about our Dad's and their efforts to discipline us before moving on to discuss in detail the wonders of same sex parents and their donor men, conscious conception and considered parenting in the absence of a father.

NOTE FROM DEREK: Some serious topics covered in this episode have sparked constructive conversations between the subjects about definitions and roles in same sex parenting situations, especially when they involve a donor. Dan and I have been loving the learning curve and are happy to say the Mothers from this ep. are going to come in at some stage for a chat.

Topics Covered:
Elderly Grandparents, skipping a generation by being an old dad.
Good Dad- Bad Dad. The importance of routine, conscious fathering, sober fathering.
Sean M Whelan, Army Dads, Vietnam veteran Dad, generational differences, Grandads - all care, no responsibility.
When your father dies. Dreams of my father. Dad- the glue that holds the family together.
Anecdotes of fathers dealing and not dealing with behavioural issues.
The ins and outs of being a sperm doner- what does it mean to be a biological father to the child of a same sex couple- rights and obligations if any- the strong relationship and considered agreements that are needed. Should hetero couples have a contract too? Close male role models in the absence of a father- Kids need role models beyond their parents.
selling sperm on the Russian Black market and other jokes about donor-ship and finally, the ways in which fatherhood has changed since our fathers time.
