East Carolina's baseball season is over, and the offseason has started in full force. The transfer portal is open from the start of June, through July 1, and with it, there have been several ups and downs already. The Pirates have the majority of their core back from last season's runner-up finish in the Conway Regional, but there have still been some significant losses to deal with, too.

In the season finale of the Bucs on The Pond podcast, the trio of Stephen Igoe, Scott Lorbacher and Jonathan Wagner break down the roster changes as it stands now, the expectations going into 2026, and more.

ECU fights, but comes up just short in Conway Regional

Although it marked the end of their season, the East Carolina Pirates had a weekend to remember at the Conway Regional. ECU defeated Florida twice, eliminating the Gators with some drama along the way, and pushed host Coastal Carolina in two games, before ultimately falling 1-0 in the championship final on Sunday night.

The Pirates conclude their campaign 35-27 overall, finishing a couple wins shy of a Super Regional berth. The Bucs on the Pond podcast returned on Monday night to discuss various topics. Conway Bound: Reacting to ECU's Regional Draw

East Carolina's baseball team is heading back to the postseason for the 35th time in program history. The Pirates, by virtue of their American Athletic Conference tournament championship, received an autobid to the field of 64. They landed in the Conway Regional, with host Coastal Carolina, as well as second-seeded Florida, and fourth-seeded Fairfield.

The Pirates will open play against Florida at 12 noon ET on Friday, before Coastal takes on Fairfield in the 1-4 game to close the first day of action. It's a double-elimination format, with the winner advancing to face the victor of the Auburn Regional.

Champions: ECU wins the 2025 American Tournament

East Carolina pulled off exactly what it needed to in Clearwater, Fla., at the AAC baseball tournament, sweeping the week to win the championship and extend its season.

The Pirates defeated USF on Tuesday, beat Charlotte in the winner's bracket, then eliminated South Florida to advance to the winner-take-all championship against Tulane. Led by some early offense and a stellar outing from freshman pitcher Sean Jenkins, the Pirates rolled to an 8-2 win in the AAC title game, earning an automatic bid back to the NCAA postseason.

ECU will appear in its 35th overall regional, and its seventh straight under head coach Cliff Godwin.

East Carolina's baseball team had a 2-2 week on the diamond, losing the series to Coastal Carolina. Ethan Norby struck out 19 in the Friday win, a 7-0 triumph, before Coastal responded with a 9-1 victory on Saturday, and a 4-3 win on Sunday in 10 innings. The Pirates are now 7-8 on the season heading into a five-game week over spring break (two at VCU, three versus William & Mary). The crew returns to break down the week ahead and answer questions from the fans.

ECU Football 2024 Season Preview

After a long offseason full of changes for sixth-year head coach Mike Houston, the ECU football season is set to open a new campaign this Saturday, Aug. 31, against Norfolk State inside Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium. The Pirates are coming off a 2-10 season after consecutive bowl appearances, but are optimistic they can turn things around with much of last year's defense back, and a new-look offense.

Reacting to the Greenville Regional and the end of ECU's season

East Carolina's 2024 baseball season came to an end on Monday in the Greenville Regional with a 6-5 loss to Evansville. The Pirates fell to the Purple Aces on Friday before battling back out of the loser's bracket, eliminating Wake Forest and topping VCU before beating Evansville on Sunday night to force a winner-take-all finale. But on Monday, Evansville found a way to outlast East Carolina, to win the Greenville Regional and advance to the Supers.

East Carolina - in somewhat surprising fashion - was announced as a regional host site on Sunday night leading into Monday's announcement of the field of 64 for the NCAA baseball tournament.

The Pirates have been ranked in the Top 15 in both major polls all season, but were considered by some media outlets as a non-host due to their RPI, which has dropped into the 20s over the last few weeks. But ECU made the host cut on Sunday night, and will await their regional pairings on Monday.

East Carolina's baseball team responded from its worst week of the year with a clean sweep of Rice, wrapping up a fifth consecutive regular season American Athletic Conference championship. The Pirates closed the regular season with 40 wins against 13 losses, and went 19-8 in The American. They now head to the conference tournament in Clearwater, Fla., with plenty to play for, including the chance to host, and maybe be a national seed.

What to make of ECU's late season slide

East Carolina's baseball team had a miserable week, going 0-4 to see its losing streak hit five consecutive games. The Pirates dropped to 37-13 on the season and 16-8 in American Athletic Conference play with a 5-2 midweek loss to Duke, and a three-game sweep at the hands of Tulane. Two of the losses to the Green Wave came in walk-off fashion, as the Pirates dropped their fifth consecutive game for the first time in seven years.

ECU will try and respond this week with a four-game home slate, with games scheduled against Campbell (Tuesday) and Rice (Thursday through Saturday) as the season wraps up. East Carolina holds a one-game lead in the conference standings ahead of UTSA with three league games left.

East Carolina completed another successful weekend with a series victory inside Clark-LeClair Stadium over visiting USF over the weekend. The Pirates won 11-1 behind another stellar Trey Yesavage start on Friday, before splitting a doubleheader on Sunday. The first game Sunday went to ECU by the final of 8-5, as the Pirates hit four home runs. The series finale, East Carolina lost 5-4 in seven innings, as the team’s 10-game winning streak came to a halt.

The Pirates, ranked sixth, are now 37-9 overall this season, including a 16-5 record in The American. There are now eight regular season games remaining, starting with Tuesday’s home contest against Duke, followed by a trip to Tulane.

ECU retakes command of AAC with another strong week

East Carolina took a big step towards putting itself in position to win another American Athletic Conference, sweeping Memphis on the road in impressive fashion to take a two-game lead in the conference race with three regular season weekends left. ECU now sits atop the league standings at 14-4, ahead of UTSA - which dropped a series at Rice and is now 12-6. The Pirates also defeated NC State in the midweek to sweep the season series. ECU has won eight in a row overall and is 35-8 on the campaign.

The Pirates operated the 4-0 week without the availability of two of their top arms in Zach Root and Wyatt Lunsford-Shenkman. Trey Yesavage threw 6.2 no-hit innings on Friday night in the win at Memphis to continue his stellar season. Carter Cunningham homered three times over the weekend as the Pirates scored 36 runs in Memphis.

What stood out most at the ECU Spring Game

It was a big weekend for East Carolina's football program, as the Pirates hosted their latest Purple-Gold Spring Game to cap off the spring season. Team Purple won the game 23-14, but more importantly, several members of the team at key positions looked the part. New offensive coordinator John David Baker put his offense on display, and so did quarterbacks Katin Houser and Jake Garcia, with each dazzling with big-time throws early.

The defense settled in from the second quarter onwards, eventually getting some key stops and not allowing an offensive touchdown the rest of the way. The Pirates recorded three interceptions, with redshirt freshman safety Kamaurri McKinley tallying a pick-six.

Despite sour ending, ECU wins four in a five-game week

It was quite the week for East Carolina's baseball team, as the Pirates played five games in six days, compiling a record of 4-1. ECU tallied midweek victories over Elon and Old Dominion, before winning the series over Charlotte. It appeared as if the Pirates were on their way to a 5-0 week before the 49ers rallied with a go-ahead grand slam in the ninth inning on Sunday, stealing the 8-7 victory.

The Pirates threw a pair of no-hitters during the week, though both were of the shortened variety. Jaden Winter, Chris Kahler and Parker Thomas combined for the no-no in a 12-0 victory over Elon on Tuesday, before Trey Yesavage and Jackson DiLorenzo tossed a no-no in an 11-0 win over Charlotte on Friday. ECU is now 27-8 on the season, including an 8-4 mark in The American, after its 4-1 week.

Road Test Passed: ECU goes 3-1 in challenging week

East Carolina answered a road challenge in a four-game stretch, taking down NC State in midweek action, before defeating FAU two-of-three in Boca Raton. The Pirates improved to 23-7 overall and 6-3 in The American. ECU won 12-4 at State, winning for the first time in Raleigh as a team since 2009.

Trey Yesavage pitched a gem on Friday night, leading ECU to a 4-1 win, before the Pirates suffered a walk-off 6-5 loss on Saturday. After getting down 3-0 in the series finale, ECU rallied with eight unanswered runs and eventually won, 8-6.

Bounce Back: ECU responds with 4-0 week

East Carolina bounced back from its first series loss of the season with a perfect 4-0 week. It started with a 7-4 win over UNC Wilmington in the midweek to complete a season sweep over the Seahawks. ECU then swept a doubleheader on Friday over UAB, before nearly throwing a no-hitter (one out shy) in a 7-1 victory on Saturday to complete the sweep. ECU is now 20-6 overall and 4-2 in The American, with a big four-game road week ahead.

Reacting to ECU's first series loss of the season

East Carolina suffered its first series loss of the season over the weekend, dropping two of three to UTSA, to open league play. The Pirates dropped to 16-6 overall and 1-2 in the conference. ECU fell on Friday, 4-2, in a game where the Roadrunners jumped out to a lead early that the Pirates could never quite recover from. On Saturday, ECU built a 12-4 advantage behind a six-run frame before holding on for a 14-10 win. In the series finale on Sunday, ECU hit four homers, but it wasn't enough to overcome a 4-1 deficit early, and it led to an eventual 6-5 loss.

ECU sweeps Columbia to complete 4-0 week

East Carolina ran its winning streak to seven with a clean 4-0 week. The action started off a little precarious with an up and down game on Tuesday at UNC Wilmington, but the Pirates survived in an 8-7 thriller in 10 innings. They then returned home to take care of Columbia, getting dominant starting pitching from Trey Yesavage and Zach Root, and big offensive games on Friday and Saturday, to roll to a series win. The sweep was completed on Sunday with an 8-6 triumph. The Pirates are now 14-4 on the season heading into a four-game road swing with contests against Elon and UTSA this week.

Road Sweep: Pirates break out brooms at Liberty

East Carolina had a strong weekend on the diamond, earning a sweep on the road at Liberty to run its record to 10-4. The Pirates won 9-5 on Friday, before coming from behind on Saturday to win, 5-3, and then doing the same on Sunday, 8-4, to break out the brooms. ECU got excellent bullpen work all weekend long, especially from Danny Beal and Wyatt Lunsford-Shenkman.

ECU captures drama-filled series win over UNC

After starting the week 0-2, the East Carolina baseball team bounced back in a big way to record two consecutive victories to pull out a big early-season series win over North Carolina. The Pirates fell at Campbell 7-6 midweek and 2-1 on Friday in the series opener at North Carolina in Chapel Hill, before winning 7-4 in Fayetteville on Saturday, and walking off the Tar Heels in a crazy back-and-forth affair on Sunday. ECU moved to 5-2 with the win.
