Football Manager 25 Cancelled - What’s Next for Sports Interactive?

It’s official - Football Manager 25 will not be released, after Sports Interactive cancelled the game due to their struggle managing the development of the game, especially as it is transitioning to Unity Engine. This is upsetting for a lot of loyal FM fans, especially with a lack of transparency in their communication prior to the cancellation. How will this affect Sports Interactive? Will this mark the end of the franchise? We explore all these, and more in this episode.

Review - Ninja Gaiden 2 Black

Ninja Gaiden - a franchise that’s making a comeback in 2025, with developer/publisher Koei Tecmo leading the charge in putting this challenging action hack & slash against the soulslike genre! The charge starts with them shadowdropping Ninja Gaiden 2 Black, a remake of the much maligned Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, but with a tinge of the original (and much loved) Ninja Gaiden 2. Ahead of the release of Ninja Gaiden 4, as well as the 2D Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound later this year, we review Ninja Gaiden 2 Black and look at how sorely missed this type of game is these days.

Gaming on a Mac - Finally A Thing?

For the longest time, the most hardcore of gamers will not get a Mac if they want to game. And that remains true, even now. But for more casual gamers out there, maybe Macs are beginning to be a reasonable platform to play games on? While they’re still technically expensive, the progress made in their latest line of silicons and chips means that the price-to-performance ratio is beginning to make more sense. The recently released Mac Mini with the M4 chip is also beginning to be a bit of a game changer. We unpack this notion and see whether it’s truly worth it, and what are the caveats.

So Near And Yet So Far - Selangor Red Giants’ Almost Perfect 2024

At the end of the day, it was a bridge too far. Selangor Red Giants, a Mobile Legends Bang Bang esports team that only came to the scene in 2023, was close to completing a perfect year - dubbed the “Golden Road” in the MLBB scene - by winning all the major tournaments in the MLBB esports calendar in the same year. After securing back-to-back victories in MPL Malaysia Season 13 and 14, as well as winning the inaugural MLBB Mid Season Cup in July, the stage is set for them to clinch the M6 World Championship, hosted right here in Malaysia. Unfortunately, that did not happen, with SRG finishing third in the championship. Selangor Red Giants’ co-founder Simon Lim joins the show to reflect on a topsy-turvy year, as well as share what it’s like to run and manage an esports team and its athletes.

See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Review - Path of Exile 2 (Early Access)

The long awaited Path of Exile 2 is finally here and available to be played! (albeit in early access). How does the second installment of this franchise that’s made to be a better alternative to the early version of Diablo 3 fare? Developer Grinding Gear Games wanted to make an Action RPG that’s accessible while still being hardcore enough for fans of the genre, so does the sequel manage to achieve that? It might still be in early access, but so far, what’s in store sounds promising enough, according to KKP’s Content Director, Jonathan Leo. Tune in to hear his thoughts on this game!

Growing Esports With Community Spaces?

The rapid growth of the esports scene and the industry here is pretty remarkable, and yet, there’s a lot more that can be done to nurture its potential. One key area that can be focused on is in strengthening our support at the grassroots level. Wan Amirul Adlan, senior games journalist at Nmia Gaming, shares his thoughts on what can be done to help improve it on that front, honing in specifically on the creation of “hangout spaces” that can be accessible enough for casual and budding eSports gamers.

Football Manager - The Beautiful (Video) Game

Football Manager’s status among football fans and gamers alike is pretty legendary as the franchise is able to evoke various emotions for its players, despite looking mostly like a spreadsheet 85% of the time. The game is loved by many loyal fans and used by actual football experts, but the developers, Sports Interactive, still want to grow and innovate. Football Manager 25 is supposed to be that next step for them but the transition is proving to be challenging, leading to the game being delayed till March 2025 instead of its usual annual release window. We’ll be addressing what happened and how fans are reacting to it in this episode with Football Manager content creator, Daljit Singh. We’ll also be hearing stories from Daljit, from the kind of content he produces on his YouTube and Twitch channels, BusttheNet Gaming, to the joy of playing Football Manager, and why it’s so addictive.

Review - Astro Bot

Astro Bot, sequel to Astro’s Playroom, came without much fanfare but absolutely surprised the gaming world with its charming characters and overall fun vibes. We unpack the game’s success and what makes it so fun and appealing, as well as look at the state of platformers now, and whether there is still room for the genre (Nintendo aside) among gamers.

Handhelds - The Best Way To Game?

Portable consoles or handhelds have always had a place in the gaming scene, but their popularity has increased even more now, especially with Nintendo Switch and its hybrid nature making the format more accessible and palatable to a wider audience than ever. That has also driven the demand for more powerful handhelds too, leading to consoles like Valve Steam Deck, Asus ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go, as well as many others, entering the market. Does this mean that portable gaming is becoming more popular than ever? Where is it now, and will it be the default format of gaming in the future? Iain Farrell, Programme Manager at Double Eleven, joins us on the show to share his thoughts and observations on the matter.

Concord - What Went Wrong?

Two weeks after its launch, Concord, Sony’s supposed answer to Blizzard’s Overwatch franchise, was taken offline due to the extremely low player count and poor sales. The signs were there early on, but the publisher’s failure to recognise and do something about it led to the game’s extremely short lifespan. We unpack what went wrong for this 5v5 live service hero shooter and reflect on what Sony and developer Firewalk Studios could have done to fix, or even mitigate this.

After the resounding and ongoing success of Genshin Impact and Honkai Star Rail, Hoyoverse is back with Zenless Zone Zero, an action RPG that has high production values and combat system that’s simple, but has been compared to luminaries like Devil May Cry and Bayonetta. But despite all the talk, does Zenless Zone Zero’s identity as a free-to-play game deter it from being a good franchise? Jonathan Leo, Content Director at Kakuchopurei.com joins us to give his take on the game and answer all these questions.

Microsoft’s decision to increase the price of its popular subscription service, Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass did not go down well with gamers, especially as it also involves taking away day one access for new releases. That news dominated this month’s headlines, alongside the closure of Humble Games and many more. Kakuchopurei.com’s content director, Jonathan Leo gives us a lowdown of what happened in July, and also speaks about the games that were released this month, including Hoyoverse’s next hit, Zenless Zone Zero, Dungeons of Hinterburg, Kunitsu-Gami and others.

Empowering Indie Developers With Xbox Game Camp Asia

From connecting indie developers to industry mentors to hosting mock game pitches, Xbox Game Camp Asia was held recently from 20th February - 19th April 2024 with two strong goals: to empower people from traditionally marginalised communities and underrepresented youths to realise their potential in the gaming industry and to grow gaming communities around the world. This week, we look at the camp and its impact from several angles through the people involved - Xbox Global Expansion Lead Chia Jun Shen, local indie game studio head Suan Goh, together with budding game developers Vanessa Ong and Jonathan Tang, participants of the camp.

This week, we look at the camp and its impact from several angles through the people involved - Xbox Global Expansion Lead Chia Jun Shen, local indie game studio head Suan Goh, together with budding game developers Vanessa Ong and Jonathan Tang, participants of the camp.

See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

“Esports Saved My Life”

Sir_Cloud is a name that’s becoming more synonymous with the local and regional esports scene, but prior to making a name for himself in the industry that he’s highly passionate about, Andrew Cheong lived a life in the corporate world, gaming occasionally on the side. When the pandemic hit, he lost his job, and went to a very dark place. But the gaming world, and esports specifically, provided a refuge for him that soon became a home he’s truly comfortable in. Fresh from releasing a book that chronicled the story of his life (so far) called “Esports Selamatkan Hidup Aku”, he joins us on the show to share what life has been like now in this new world, and his observations of the esports industry.

Shin Megami Tensei may not be as well known as the franchise that spun off from it, the Persona series, but that doesn’t mean that it’s not as great as its more popular brethren.
It’s a stellar month, with Stellar Blade leading the list of games released this month (sorry, we had to do it!) But is it as outstanding as the name suggests? Other releases also include Lunar Lander Beyond, Sand Land, Children of the Sun and many others, including a short review of Amazon’s Fallout TV show.
On the news front, Larian Studios will stop developing future Baldur’s Gate games, Keanu Reeves will be voicing Shadow the Hedgehog, Amazon’s Fallout has been renewed for another season, and many more. Tune in to find out!

Nurturing Future Malaysian Game Developers - The Ins And Outs

Malaysian indie game developer Sophie Azlan has blazed a trail in the traditionally male-dominated gamedev space since she emerged on the scene. Currently a developer involved in several indie projects in Malaysia's burgeoning gaming industry and a lecturer of game development at UOW Malaysia, she aims to leverage on her experiences in both spaces to act as a bridge between the country's emerging talent and studios. On GGWP this week, we talk to Sophie about her exciting career so far, her experiences being an educator in the fast-growing space, the sustainability of the profession in an industry that's seen its fair share of issues recently, as well as her hopes for the future of the South East Asian video game industry, and some homegrown studios and games to check out for anyone aspiring to get into the industry.

Getting To Know Malaysian Gamers

Video gaming is pretty prevalent these days, especially when mobile platforms make the hobby more accessible beyond the usual demographic. Yet, despite our parents, uncles and aunts also gaming on their mobile phones, some of them do not consider themselves gamers. This is one among many interesting discoveries found in the research conducted by Omnicom Media Group Malaysia titled ‘Unlocking Gamers in Asia Pacific’. We speak to Kiron Kesav, Chief Strategy Officer at the company to learn more about the outcome of the research, including Malaysians' game genre of choice, whether they like to game by themselves or with others, and their attitudes towards brands and advertising in video games. To read the full research, please contact Anna Lissa Bantigue at alissa.bantigue@omnicommediagroup.com

BFM x KKP Monthly Round-up - March 2024

It’s a month full of meaty updates for longstanding franchises, such as Stardew Valley, with its 1.6 update, as well as for fading franchises that might see a resurgence, in the form of Overwatch 2, with Season 10 bringing about some big changes to the game. Will this be the beginning of a redemption arc for Blizzard’s famous team-based shooter? Elsewhere, legendary game director Amy Hennig returns with Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, while SNK announced a new Fatal Fury game called Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves. We summarised some of the biggest news in March, and spoke about this month’s releases, including Dragon’s Dogma 2, Rise of the Ronin, and Unicorn Overlord, among others.

The gaming world tries its best to celebrate February with awesome releases, with Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth at the forefront. Despite that, Persona 3 Reload, Helldivers 2, Islands of Insight, and even to a certain extent, Skull and Bones (finally!) have something to shout about too, as these releases are worth checking out as well. On the news front, Sony announced that they won’t be releasing any major games from existing franchises this financial year, while Microsoft will be releasing some of their exclusives to other platforms. But will this be a good move for the company, or will it backfire on their console sales moving forward? We discussed this on the show, with Kakuchopurei’s content director, Jonathan Leo.

See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Palworld - Pokemon… With Guns & More?

Palworld is a survival, monster collector game that exploded and has taken the gaming world by storm upon its release in January. Part of the appeal of the game is that the monsters, or Pals, are cute, reminiscent of a certain franchise by Nintendo, and are also able to do much more! Of course, that indirectly creates controversies too. In this episode, we sift through the noise and look at why it’s a hit immediately upon its release. We also try out the game to see whether it lives up to its hype.

We’re continuing our monthly round up of news and games with the folks from Kakuchopurei.com, and the year has started terribly for some in the industry, as massive layoffs continue, with Microsoft the latest company to be involved in this practice.

It’s a slightly special episode of our monthly round up with KKP’s Jon Leo, as he was in Japan, attending Tokyo Game Show 2023 when we recorded the show. So, naturally, we ended up talking about the games that he managed to get his hands on, including Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Like A Dragon 8: Infinite Wealth, and Dragon’s Dogma 2, among others. We also summarised September’s biggest news, including the drama with Unity Engine and the leaks at Microsoft, and many others. Jon Leo also shared his thoughts on Starfield, Mortal Kombat 1, Bomb Rush Cyberfunk and Gunbrella.

Grand Theft Auto 5 - 10 Years Later

It’s been 10 years since Michael, Franklin, Trevor came to our lives and changed the landscape of the open-world gaming genre. The cynical among us might have grown tired of Rockstar’s insistence on remastering Grand Theft Auto 5 through two generations of consoles, as well as the massive popularity of GTA Online that led to the game, perhaps overstaying its welcome, but no one can deny the cultural impact, legacy and staying power of this iteration of GTA. We reflect on GTA 5’s longevity and footprint in the gaming world in conjunction with its 10th anniversary.

Retro Review - God of War

Kratos, the main hero of the God of War franchise, was once brutal and merciless, but the 2018 reboot saw a change in the character’s demeanour and dynamic with others. This is also parallel in the way the game and franchise has evolved as well. So, ahead of the release of God of War: Ragnarok, we look back at this modern classic and how it has successfully scaled new heights.

Platinum Games’ Bayonetta 3 received bad publicity ahead of its release, when Hellena Taylor, who voiced the game’s main character in the prequels, claimed that she was offered a paltry amount to return to the game. This soon led to a messy controversy and back and forth between Hellena and Platinum Games. Elsewhere, Konami finally confirmed the existence of a slew of new Silent Hill products. The internet remains cautiously optimistic, despite the announcements. This and more, including October’s new releases, with Jonathan Leo from Kakuchopurei.com.

Impressions - Rollerdrome

We check out Rollerdrome, a game that is essentially the Tony Hawk series, but with guns. But don’t let that slightly simplistic take on the game fool you - Rollerdrome has a very cool art style and a dystopian theme that sets the mood for you to fight the enemies while pulling off cool tricks on your roller skates. Tune in to the show to find out whether the game is worth picking up.
